Affine Type $A$ Geometric Crystal on the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ geometric crystal on the variety ${\rm Gr}(k,n) \times \mathbb{C}^\times$, and show that it tropicalizes to the disjoint union of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals corresponding to rectangular tableaux with $n-k$ rows. A key ingredient in our construction is the $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ symmetry on the Grassmannian coming from cyclically shifting the basis of the underlying vector space. We show that a twisted version of this symmetry tropicalizes to combinatorial promotion. Additionally, we use the loop group ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C}(λ))$ to define a unipotent crystal which induces our geometric crystal. We use this unipotent crystal to study the geometric analogues of two symmetries of rectangular tableaux.

The structure of ABC-minimal trees with given number of leaves
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 79 (2018) 415-430 • Search Publication
The atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index is a degree-based molecular descriptor with diverse chemical applications. Recent work of Lin et al. [W. Lin, J. Chen, C. Ma, Y. Zhang, J. Chen, D. Zhang, and F. Jia, On trees with minimal ABC index among trees with given number of leaves, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 76 (2016) 131-140] gave rise to a conjecture about the minimum possible ABC-index of trees with a fixed number $t$ of leaves. We show that this conjecture is incorrect and we prove what the correct answer is. It is shown that the extremal tree $T_t$ is unique for $t\ge 1195$, it has order $|T_t| = t + \lfloor \tfrac{t}{10}\rfloor +1$ (when $t$ mod 10 is between 0 and 4 or when it is 5, 6, or 7 and $t$ is sufficiently large) or $|T_t| = t + \lfloor \tfrac{t}{10}\rfloor + 2$ (when $t$ mod 10 is 8 or 9 or when it is 5, 6, or 7 and $t$ is sufficiently small) and its ABC-index is $( \sqrt{\tfrac{10}{11}} + \tfrac{1}{10}\sqrt{\tfrac{1}{11}} )t + O(1)$.

Embedding Quartic Eulerian Digraphs on the Plane
Published in Australasian J. Combinatorics 67(2) (2017) 364-377 • Search Publication
Minimal obstructions for embedding 4-regular Eulerian digraphs on the plane are considered in relation to the partial order defined by the cycle removal operation. Their basic properties are provided and all obstructions with parallel arcs are classified.
Whitney's Theorem for 2-Regular Planar Digraphs
Published in Australasian J. Combinatorics 67(2) (2017) 159-165 • Search Publication
A digraph is 2-regular if every vertex has both indegree and outdegree two. We define an embedding of a 2-regular digraph to be a 2-cell embedding of the underlying graph in a closed surface with the added property that for every vertex~$v$, the two edges directed away from $v$ are not consecutive in the local rotation around $v$. In other words, at each vertex the incident edges are oriented in-out-in-out. The goal of this article is to provide an analogue of Whitney's theorem on planar embeddings in the setting of 2-regular digraphs. In the course of doing so, we note that Tutte's Theorem on peripheral cycles also has a natural analogue in this setting.

Sesqui-arrays, a generalisation of triple arrays
Published in Australas. J. Combinatorics 71(3) (2018), 427-451 • Search Publication
A triple array is a rectangular array containing letters, each letter occurring equally often with no repeats in rows or columns, such that the number of letters common to two rows, two columns, or a row and a column are (possibly different) non-zero constants. Deleting the condition on the letters common to a row and a column gives a double array. We propose the term \emph{sesqui-array} for such an array when only the condition on pairs of columns is deleted. Thus all triple arrays are sesqui-arrays. In this paper we give three constructions for sesqui-arrays. The first gives $(n+1)\times n^2$ arrays on $n(n+1)$ letters for $n\geq 2$. (Such an array for $n=2$ was found by Bagchi.) This construction uses Latin squares. The second uses the \emph{Sylvester graph}, a subgraph of the Hoffman--Singleton graph, to build a good block design for $36$ treatments in $42$ blocks of size~$6$, and then uses this in a $7\times 36$ sesqui-array for $42$ letters. We also give a construction for $K\times(K-1)(K-2)/2$ sesqui-arrays on $K(K-1)/2$ letters. This construction uses biplanes. It starts with a block of a biplane and produces an array which satisfies the requirements for a sesqui-array except possibly that of having no repeated letters in a row or column. We show that this condition holds if and only if the \emph{Hussain chains} for the selected block contain no $4$-cycles. A sufficient condition for the construction to give a triple array is that each Hussain chain is a union of $3$-cycles; but this condition is not necessary, and we give a few further examples. We also discuss the question of which of these arrays provide good designs for experiments.

Modular Forms and $k$-colored Generalized Frobenius Partitions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 371 (2019), no. 3, 2159-2205 • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ and $n$ be positive integers. Let $cφ_{k}(n)$ denote the number of $k$-colored generalized Frobenius partitions of $n$ and $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$ be the generating function of $cφ_{k}(n)$. In this article, we study $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$ using the theory of modular forms and discover new surprising properties of $\mathrm{C}Φ_k(q)$.

Labeled binary trees, subarrangements of the Catalan arrangements, and Schur positivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1995, the first author introduced a multivariate generating function {$G$} that tracks the distribution of ascents and descents in labeled binary trees. In addition to proving that $G$ is symmetric, he conjectured that $G$ is Schur positive. We prove this conjecture by expanding $G$ positively in terms of ribbon Schur functions. We obtain this expansion using a weight-preserving bijection whose inverse is inspired by the Push-Glide algorithm of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot. In fact, this weight-preserving bijection allows us to establish a stronger version of the first author's conjecture showing that the generating function restricted to labeled binary trees with a fixed canopy is still Schur positive. We also discuss applications in the setting of hyperplane arrangements. We show that a certain specialization of $G$ equals the Frobenius characteristic of the natural $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on regions of the semiorder arrangement, which we then expand in terms of {the Frobenius characteristics} of Foulkes characters. We also construct an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on regions of the Linial arrangement using a set of trees studied by Bernardi, and subsequently compute the character of this action by employing Lagrange inversion. The resulting expression generalizes Postnikov's formula for the number of regions in the Linial arrangement. As a final application, we prove $γ$-nonnegativity for the distribution of the number of right edges over local binary search trees.

Finding Balance: Split Graphs and Related Classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is a split graph if its vertex set can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. A split graph is unbalanced if there exist two such partitions that are distinct. Cheng, Collins and Trenk (2016), discovered the following interesting counting fact: unlabeled, unbalanced split graphs on $n$ vertices can be placed into a bijection with all unlabeled split graphs on $n-1$ or fewer vertices. In this paper we translate these concepts and the theorem to different combinatorial settings: minimal set covers, bipartite graphs with a distinguished block and posets of height one.

Convexity of tableau sets for type A Demazure characters (key polynomials), parabolic Catalan numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Combinatorics (August 16, 2018) dmtcs:4158 • View Publication • BIB
This is the first of three papers that develop structures which are counted by a "parabolic" generalization of Catalan numbers. Fix a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Consider the ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes are determined by R. These are the "inverses" of (parabolic) multipermutations whose multiplicities are determined by R. The standard forms of the ordered partitions are refered to as "R-permutations". The notion of 312-avoidance is extended from permutations to R-permutations. Let lambda be a partition of N such that the set of column lengths in its shape is R or R union {n}. Fix an R-permutation pi. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial) in x_1, .., x_n that is indexed by lambda and pi can be described as the sum of the weight monomials for some of the semistandard Young tableau of shape lambda that are used to describe the Schur function indexed by lambda. Descriptions of these "Demazure" tableaux developed by the authors in earlier papers are used to prove that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is R-312-avoiding if and only if the tableau set is the entire principal ideal generated by the key of pi. These papers were inspired by results of Reiner and Shimozono and by Postnikov and Stanley concerning coincidences between Demazure characters and flagged Schur functions. This convexity result is used in the next paper to deepen those results from the level of polynomials to the level of tableau sets. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of R-312-avoiding permutations. These special R-permutations are reformulated as "R-rightmost clump deleting" chains of subsets of {1,..,n} and as "gapless R-tuples"; the latter n-tuples arise in multiple contexts in these papers.

Burning Circulant Graphs
In this paper we study the graph parameter of burning number, introduced by Bonato, Janssen, and Roshanbin (2014). We are particular interested in determining the burning number of Circulant graphs. In this paper, we find upper and lower bounds on the burning number of classes of circulant graphs of degree at most four. The burning number is found exactly for a family of circulant graphs of degree three, and two specific families of circulant graphs of degree four. Finally, we given upper and lower bounds on the burning number of families of circulant graphs of higher degree.

A characterization of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs using the intersection numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a primitive distance-regular graph $Γ$ with diameter at least $3$. We use the intersection numbers of $Γ$ to find a positive semidefinite matrix $G$ with integer entries. We show that $G$ has determinant zero if and only if $Γ$ is $Q$-polynomial.

A uniform approach to soliton cellular automata using rigged configurations
Published in Ann. Henri Poincaré, 20(4) (2019) pp. 1175-1215 • View Publication • BIB
For soliton cellular automata, we give a uniform description and proofs of the solitons, the scattering rule of two solitons, and the phase shift using rigged configurations in a number of special cases. In particular, we prove these properties for the soliton cellular automata using $B^{r,1}$ when $r$ is adjacent to $0$ in the Dynkin diagram or there is a Dynkin diagram automorphism sending $r$ to $0$.

Characterizations of Eulerian and even-face partial duals of ribbon graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Huggett and Moffatt characterized all bipartite partial duals of a plane graph in terms of all-crossing directions of its medial graph. Then Metsidik and Jin characterized all Eulerian partial duals of a plane graph in terms of semi-crossing directions of its medial graph. Plane graphs are ribbon graphs with genus 0. In this paper, we shall first extend Huggett and Moffatt's result to any orientable ribbon graph and provide an example to show that it is not true for non-orientable ribbon graphs. Then we characterize all Eulerian partial duals of any ribbon graph in terms of crossing-total directions of its medial graph, which are much more simple than semi-crossing directions.

Minor stars in plane graphs with minimum degree five
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 257 (2019) 233--242 • View Publication • BIB
The weight of a subgraph $H$ in $G$ is the sum of the degrees in $G$ of vertices of $H$. The {\em height} of a subgraph $H$ in $G$ is the maximum degree of vertices of $H$ in $G$. A star in a given graph is minor if its center has degree at most five in the given graph. Lebesgue (1940) gave an approximate description of minor $5$-stars in the class of normal plane maps with minimum degree five. In this paper, we give two descriptions of minor $5$-stars in plane graphs with minimum degree five. By these descriptions, we can extend several results and give some new results on the weight and height for some special plane graphs with minimum degree five.

We express minors of Toeplitz matrices of finite and large dimension in terms of symmetric functions. Comparing the resulting expressions with the inverses of some Toeplitz matrices, we obtain explicit formulas for a Selberg-Morris integral and for specializations of certain skew Schur polynomials.

The Chain Group of a Forest
For every labeled forest $\mathsf{F}$ with set of vertices $[n]$ we can consider the subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ that is generated by all the cycles determined by all maximal paths of $\mathsf{F}$. We say that $G$ is the chain group of the forest $\mathsf{F}$. In this paper we study the relation between a forest and its chain group. In particular, we find the chain groups of the members of several families of forests. Finally, we prove that no copy of the dihedral group of cardinality $2n$ inside $S_n$ can be achieved as the chain group of any forest.

Strong Forms of Stability from Flag Algebra Calculations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a hereditary family $\mathcal{G}$ of admissible graphs and a function $λ(G)$ that linearly depends on the statistics of order-$κ$ subgraphs in a graph $G$, we consider the extremal problem of determining $λ(n,\mathcal{G})$, the maximum of $λ(G)$ over all admissible graphs $G$ of order $n$. We call the problem perfectly $B$-stable for a graph $B$ if there is a constant $C$ such that every admissible graph $G$ of order $n\ge C$ can be made into a blow-up of $B$ by changing at most $C(λ(n,\mathcal{G})-λ(G)){n\choose2}$ adjacencies. As special cases, this property describes all almost extremal graphs of order $n$ within $o(n^2)$ edges and shows that every extremal graph of order $n\ge n_0$ is a blow-up of $B$. We develop general methods for establishing stability-type results from flag algebra computations and apply them to concrete examples. In fact, one of our sufficient conditions for perfect stability is stated in a way that allows automatic verification by a computer. This gives a unifying way to obtain computer-assisted proofs of many new results.

Mobile vs. point guards
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, March 2019, Volume 61, Issue 2, pp 421-451 • View Publication • BIB
We study the problem of guarding orthogonal art galleries with horizontal mobile guards (alternatively, vertical) and point guards, using "rectangular vision". We prove a sharp bound on the minimum number of point guards required to cover the gallery in terms of the minimum number of vertical mobile guards and the minimum number of horizontal mobile guards required to cover the gallery. Furthermore, we show that the latter two numbers can be calculated in linear time.

The spectral determination of the multicone graphs Kw+P
The main aim of this study is to characterize new classes of multicone graphs which are determined by their signless Laplacian spectra, their Laplacian spectra and their adjacency spectra. A multicone graph is defined to be the join of a clique and a regular graph. Let P and Kw denote the Petersen graph and a complete graph on w vertices, respectively. In this paper, we show that multicone graphs Kw+P are determined by their signless Laplacian spectra, their Laplacian spectra and their adjacency spectra. Keywords: DS graph; Multicone graph; Signless Laplacian spectrum; Petersen graph.
