Shuffle-compatible permutation statistics
Published in Adv. Math. 332: 85-141, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
Since the early work of Richard Stanley, it has been observed that several permutation statistics have a remarkable property with respect to shuffles of permutations. We formalize this notion of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic and introduce the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic, which encodes the distribution of the statistic over shuffles of permutations. This paper develops a theory of shuffle-compatibility for descent statistics (statistics that depend only on the descent set and length) which has close connections to the theory of $P$-partitions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions. We use our framework to prove that many descent statistics are shuffle-compatible and to give explicit descriptions of their shuffle algebras, thus unifying past results of Stanley, Gessel, Stembridge, Aguiar-Bergeron-Nyman, and Petersen.

Zero forcing number, Grundy domination number, and their variants
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents strong connections between four variants of the zero forcing number and four variants of the Grundy domination number. These connections bridge the domination problem and the minimum rank problem. We show that the Grundy domination type parameters are bounded above by the minimum rank type parameters. We also give a method to calculate the $L$-Grundy domination number by the Grundy total domination number, giving some linear algebra bounds for the $L$-Grundy domination number.

The star sequence and the general first Zagreb index
Published in ko, The star sequence and the general first Zagreb index MATCH Communications in Mathematical and in Computer Chemistry,Volume 79 (2018), number 2, pp. 407-414 • Search Publication
For a simple graph, we introduce a notion of the star sequence and prove that the star sequence and the frequently sequences of a graph are inverses of each other from a combinatorial point of view. As a consequence, we express the general first Zagreb index in terms of the star sequence. Also, we calculate the ordinary generating function and find a linear recurrence relation for the sequence of the general first Zagreb indexes.

A combinatorial proof of Bass's determinant formula for the zeta function of regular graphs
We give an elementary combinatorial proof of Bass's determinant formula for the zeta function of a finite regular graph. This is done by expressing the number of non-backtracking cycles of a given length in terms of Chebychev polynomials in the eigenvalues of the adjacency operator of the graph.

On the reduced Euler characteristic of independence complexes of circulant graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 341 (2018) pp. 2380-2386 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S\subseteq\{ 1,\ldots,\left \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right \rfloor\}$. We study the reduced Euler characteristic $\tildeχ$ of the independence complex $Δ(G)$ for $n=p^k$ with $p$ prime and for $n=2p^k$ with $p$ odd prime, proving that in both cases $\tildeχ$ does not vanish. We also give an example of circulant graph whose independence complex has $\tildeχ$ equals to $0$, giving a negative answer to R. Hoshino.

On the Hausdorff dimension of pinned distance sets
Published in Israel J. Math. 230 (2019), no. 2, 949--972 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that if $A$ is a Borel set in the plane of equal Hausdorff and packing dimension $s>1$, then the set of pinned distances $\{ |x-y|:y\in A\}$ has full Hausdorff dimension for all $x$ outside of a set of Hausdorff dimension $1$ (in particular, for many $x\in A$). This verifies a strong variant of Falconer's distance set conjecture for sets of equal Hausdorff and packing dimension, outside the endpoint $s=1$.

Stability, shards, and preprojective algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this note two-fold. First, I draw attention to the way that semistability (in the sense of King) gives us a geometrical picture of (some of) the extension-closed abelian subcategories of a finite-dimensional algebra. Second, I describe Nathan Reading's shards of a hyperplane arrangement, and explain their relevance to understanding the semistability picture for finite-type preprojective algebras.

Woon's tree and sums over compositions
This article studies sums over all compositions of an integer. We derive a generating function for this quantity, and apply it to several special functions, including various generalized Bernoulli numbers. We connect composition sums with a recursive tree introduced by S.G. Woon and extended by P. Fuchs under the name "general PI tree", in which an output sequence $\{x_n\}$ is associated to the input sequence $\{g_n\}$ by summing over each row of the tree built from $\{g_n\}$. Our link with the notion of compositions allows to introduce a modification of Fuchs' tree that takes into account nonlinear transforms of the generating function of the input sequence. We also introduce the notion of \textit{generalized sums over compositions}, where we look at composition sums over each part of a composition.

A spectral characterisation of t-designs and its applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are two standard approaches to the construction of $t$-designs. The first one is based on permutation group actions on certain base blocks. The second one is based on coding theory. The objective of this paper is to give a spectral characterisation of all $t$-designs by introducing a characteristic Boolean function of a $t$-design. The spectra of the characteristic functions of $(n-2)/2$-$(n, n/2, 1)$ Steiner systems are determined and properties of such designs are proved. Delsarte's characterisations of orthogonal arrays and $t$-designs, which are two special cases of Delsarte's characterisation of $T$-designs in association schemes, are slightly extended into two spectral characterisations. Another characterisation of $t$-designs by Delsarte and Seidel is also extended into a spectral one. These spectral characterisations are then compared with the new spectral characterisation of this paper.
A fast algorithm for the gas station problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the gas station problem we want to find the cheapest path between two vertices of an $n$-vertex graph. Our car has a specific fuel capacity and at each vertex we can fill our car with gas, with the fuel cost depending on the vertex. Furthermore, we are allowed at most $Δ$ stops for refuelling. In this short paper we provide an algorithm solving the problem in $O(Δn^2 + n^2\log{n})$ steps improving an earlier result by Khuller, Malekian and Mestre.
On the super edge-magicness of graphs of equal order and size
The super edge-magicness of graphs of equal order and size has been shown to be important since such graphs can be used as seeds to answer many questions related to (super) edge-magic labelings and other types of well studied labelings, as for instance harmonious labelings. Also other questions related to the area of combinatorics can be attacked and understood from the point of view of super edge-magic graphs of equal order and size. For instance, the design of Steiner triple systems, the study of the set of dual shuffle primes and the Jacobsthal numbers. In this paper, we study the super edge-magic properties of some types of super edge-magic graphs of equal order and size, with the hope that they can be used later in the study of other related questions. The negative results found in last section are specially interesting since these kind of results are not common in the literature. Furthermore, the few results found in this direction usually meet one of the following reasons: too many vertices compared with the number of edges; too many edges compared with the number of vertices; or parity conditions. In this case, all previous reasons fail in our results.

On pre-Hamiltonian cycles in balanced bipartite digraphs
Published in Mathematical Problems of Computer Science 46, (2016) 7-16 • Search Publication
Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 10$. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. In this paper we prove: {\it If the underlying undirected graph of $D$ is not 2-connected and $max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-2$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then $D$ contains a cycle of length $2a-2$ unless $D$ is isomorphic to a certain digraph of order ten which we specify.

Partition-free families of sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $m(n)$ denote the maximum size of a family of subsets which does not contain two disjoint sets along with their union. In 1968 Kleitman proved that $m(n) = {n\choose m+1}+\ldots +{n\choose 2m+1}$ if $n=3m+1$. Confirming the conjecture of Kleitman, we establish the same equality for the cases $n=3m$ and $n=3m+2$, and also determine all extremal families. Unlike the case $n=3m+1$, the extremal families are not unique. This is a plausible reason behind the relative difficulty of our proofs. We completely settle the case of several families as well.
A sufficient condition for pre-Hamiltonian cycles in bipartite digraphs

Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 10$ other than a directed cycle. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. In this paper we prove: If $ max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-2$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then $D$ contains cycles of all lengths $2,4, \ldots , 2a-2$ or $D$ is isomorphic to a certain digraph of order ten which we specify.

Enumeration of Restricted Words and Linear Recurrence Equations
In previous papers, for an arithmetical function $f_0$, we defined functions $f_m$ and $c_m$ and designated numbers of restricted words over a finite alphabet counted by these functions. In this paper, we examine the reverse problem for five specific types of restricted words. Namely, we find the initial function $f_0$ such that $f_m$ and $c_m$ enumerate these words. In each case, we derive explicit formulas for $f_m$ and $c_m$. Fibonacci, Merssen, Pell, Jacosthal, Tribonacci, and Padovan numbers all appear as values of $f_m$, so we obtain new formulas for these numbers. Also, we combinatorially derive explicit formulas for the solutions of five types of homogenous linear recurrence equations.

Sesqui-type branching processes
Published in Stochastic Processes and their Applications 128 (2018), 3628--3655 • View Publication • BIB
We consider branching processes consisting of particles (individuals) of two types (type L and type S) in which only particles of type L have offspring, proving estimates for the survival probability and the (tail of) the distribution of the total number of particles. Such processes are in some sense closer to single- than to multi-type branching processes. Nonetheless, the second, barren, type complicates the analysis significantly. The results proved here (about point and survival probabilities) are a key ingredient in the analysis of bounded-size Achlioptas processes in a recent paper by the last two authors.

Triangle-free graphs of tree-width t are ceil((t + 3)/2)-colorable
We prove that every triangle-free graph of tree-width t has chromatic number at most ceil((t + 3)/2), and demonstrate that this bound is tight. The argument also establishes a connection between coloring graphs of tree-width t and on-line coloring of graphs of path-width t.

Spectral gaps of simplicial complexes without large missing faces
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, rny115 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
Let $X$ be a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices without missing faces of dimension larger than $d$. Let $L_{j}$ denote the $j$-Laplacian acting on real $j$-cochains of $X$ and let $μ_{j}(X)$ denote its minimal eigenvalue. We study the connection between the spectral gaps $μ_{k}(X)$ for $k\geq d$ and $μ_{d-1}(X)$. In particular, we establish the following vanishing result: If $μ_{d-1}(X)>(1-\binom{k+1}{d}^{-1})n$, then $\tilde{H}^{j}(X;\mathbb{R})=0$ for all $d-1\leq j \leq k$. As an application we prove a fractional extension of a Hall-type theorem of Holmsen, Martínez-Sandoval and Montejano for general position sets in matroids.

Equivariant Quantum Cohomology of the Odd Symplectic Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
The odd symplectic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}:=\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ parametrizes $k$ dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$ which are isotropic with respect to a general (necessarily degenerate) symplectic form. The odd symplectic group acts on $\mathrm{IG}$ with two orbits, and $\mathrm{IG}$ is itself a smooth Schubert variety in the submaximal isotropic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+2)$. We use the technique of curve neighborhoods to prove a Chevalley formula in the equivariant quantum cohomology of $\mathrm{IG}$, i.e. a formula to multiply a Schubert class by the Schubert divisor class. This generalizes a formula of Pech in the case $k=2$, and it gives an algorithm to calculate any multiplication in the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.
