The forgotten topological index or F-index of a graph is defined as the sum of cubes of the degree of all the vertices of the graph. In this paper we study the F-index of four operations related to the lexicographic product on graphs which were introduced by Sarala et al. [D. Sarala, H. Deng, S.K. Ayyaswamya and S. Balachandrana, The Zagreb indices of graphs based on four new operations related to the lexicographic product, \textit{Applied Mathematics and Computation}, 309 (2017) 156--169.].

Simplices for Numeral Systems

The family of lattice simplices in $\mathbb{R}^n$ formed by the convex hull of the standard basis vectors together with a weakly decreasing vector of negative integers include simplices that play a central role in problems in enumerative algebraic geometry and mirror symmetry. From this perspective, it is useful to have formulae for their discrete volumes via Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomials. Here we show, via an association with numeral systems, that such simplices yield $h^\ast$-polynomials with properties that are also desirable from a combinatorial perspective. First, we identify $n$-simplices in this family that associate via their normalized volume to the $n^{th}$ place value of a positional numeral system. We then observe that their $h^\ast$-polynomials admit combinatorial formula via descent-like statistics on the numeral strings encoding the nonnegative integers within the system. With these methods, we recover ubiquitous $h^\ast$-polynomials including the Eulerian polynomials and the binomial coefficients arising from the factoradic and binary numeral systems, respectively. We generalize the binary case to base-$r$ numeral systems for all $r\geq2$, and prove that the associated $h^\ast$-polynomials are real-rooted and unimodal for $r\geq2$ and $n\geq1$.
Classical properties of algebras using a new graph association
We study the relation between algebraic structures and Graph Theory. We have defined five different weighted digraphs associated to a finite dimensional algebra over a field in order to tackle important properties of the associated algebras, mainly the nilpotency and solvability in the case of Leibniz algebras.

Let $G$ be a simple strongly connected weighted directed graph. Let $\mathcal{G}$ denote the spanning tree graph of $G$. That is, the vertices of $\mathcal{G}$ consist of the directed rooted spanning trees on $G$, and the edges of $\mathcal{G}$ consist of pairs of trees $(t_i, t_j)$ such that $t_j$ can be obtained from $t_i$ by adding the edge from the root of $t_i$ to the root of $t_j$ and deleting the outgoing edge from the root of $t_j$. A formula for the ratio of the sum of the weights of the directed rooted spanning trees on $\mathcal{G}$ to the sum of the weights of the directed rooted spanning trees on $G$ was recently given by Biane and Chapuy. We provide an alternative proof of this formula, which is both simple and combinatorial. The proof involves working with the stochastic zeta function of an irreducible Markov chain. By generalizing the stochastic zeta function we also recover the general result of Biane and Chapuy which gives a formula for the determinant of the Schrödinger matrix on $\mathcal{G}$ corresponding to a given Schrödinger matrix on $G$, in terms of the minors of the latter matrix.
Planar arcs

Let $p$ denote the characteristic of ${\mathbb F}_q$, the finite field with $q$ elements. We prove that if $q$ is odd then an arc of size $q+2-t$ in the projective plane over ${\mathbb F}_q$, which is not contained in a conic, is contained in the intersection of two curves, which do not share a common component, and have degree at most $t+p^{\lfloor \log_p t \rfloor}$, provided a certain technical condition on $t$ is satisfied.
This implies that if $q$ is odd then an arc of size at least $q-\sqrt{q}+\sqrt{q}/p+3$ is contained in a conic if $q$ is square and an arc of size at least $q-\sqrt{q}+\frac{7}{2}$ is contained in a conic if $q$ is prime. This is of particular interest in the case that $q$ is an odd square, since then there are examples of arcs, not contained in a conic, of size $q-\sqrt{q}+1$, and it has long been conjectured that if $q \neq 9$ is an odd square then any larger arc is contained in a conic.
These bounds improve on previously known bounds when $q$ is an odd square and for primes less than $1783$. The previously known bounds, obtained by Segre \cite{Segre1967}, Hirschfeld and Korchmáros \cite{HK1996} \cite{HK1998}, and Voloch \cite{Voloch1990b} \cite{Voloch1991}, rely on results on the number of points on algebraic curves over finite fields, in particular the Hasse-Weil theorem and the Stöhr-Voloch theorem, and are based on Segre's idea to associate an algebraic curve in the dual plane containing the tangents to an arc. In this paper we do not rely on such theorems, but use a new approach starting from a scaled coordinate-free version of Segre's lemma of tangents.
Arcs in the projective plane over ${\mathbb F}_q$ of size $q$ and $q+1$, $q$ odd, were classified by Segre \cite{Segre1955b} in 1955. In this article, we complete the classification of arcs of size $q-1$ and $q-2$.

O. Einstein (2008) proved Bollobás-type theorems on intersecting families of ordered sets of finite sets and subspaces. Unfortunately, we report that the proof of a theorem on ordered sets of subspaces had a mistake. We prove two weaker variants.
A Reduction for the Distinct Distances Problem in ${\mathbb R}^d$
We introduce a reduction from the distinct distances problem in ${\mathbb R}^d$ to an incidence problem with $(d-1)$-flats in ${\mathbb R}^{2d-1}$. Deriving the conjectured bound for this incidence problem (the bound predicted by the polynomial partitioning technique) would lead to a tight bound for the distinct distances problem in ${\mathbb R}^d$. The reduction provides a large amount of information about the $(d-1)$-flats, and a framework for deriving more restrictions that these satisfy. Our reduction is based on introducing a Lie group that is a double cover of the special Euclidean group. This group can be seen as a variant of the Spin group, and a large part of our analysis involves studying its properties.

We consider the two-player game chomp on posets associated to numerical semigroups and show that the analysis of strategies for chomp is strongly related to classical properties of semigroups. We characterize, which player has a winning-strategy for symmetric semigroups, semigroups of maximal embedding dimension and several families of numerical semigroups generated by arithmetic sequences. Furthermore, we show that which player wins on a given numerical semigroup is a decidable question. Finally, we extend several of our results to the more general setting of subsemigroups of $\mathbb{N} \times T$, where $T$ is a finite abelian group.

We present here random distributions on $(D+1)$-edge-colored, bipartite graphs with a fixed number of vertices $2p$. These graphs are dual to $D$-dimensional orientable colored complexes. We investigate the behavior of quantities related to those random graphs, such as their number of connected components or the number of vertices of their dual complexes, as $p \to \infty$. The techniques involved in the study of these quantities also yield a Central Limit Theorem for the genus of a uniform map of order $p$, as $p \to \infty$.
Identification of points using disks

We consider the problem of identifying n points in the plane using disks, i.e., minimizing the number of disks so that each point is contained in a disk and no two points are in exactly the same set of disks. This problem can be seen as an instance of the test covering problem with geometric constraints on the tests. We give tight lower and upper bounds on the number of disks needed to identify any set of n points of the plane. In particular, we prove that if there are no three colinear points nor four cocyclic points, then roughly n/3 disks are enough, improving the known bound of (n+1)/2 when we only require that no three points are colinear.
We also consider complexity issues when the radius of the disks is fixed, proving that this problem is NP-complete. In contrast, we give a linear-time algorithm computing the exact number of disks if the points are colinear.

We prove that every triangle-free planar graph of order $n$ and size $m$ has an induced linear forest with at least $\frac{9n - 2m}{11}$ vertices, and thus at least $\frac{5n + 8}{11}$ vertices. Furthermore, we show that there are triangle-free planar graphs on $n$ vertices whose largest induced linear forest has order $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil + 1$.

This paper studies Markov chains on the chambers of real hyperplane arrangements, a model that generalizes famous examples, such as the Tsetlin library and riffle shuffles. We discuss cutoff for the Tsetlin library for general weights, and we give an exact formula for the separation distance for the hyperplane arrangement walk. We introduce lower bounds, which allow for the first time to study cutoff for hyperplane arrangement walks under certain conditions. Using similar techniques, we also prove a uniform lower bound for the mixing time of Glauber dynamics on a monotone system.

We introduce two monads on the category of graphs and prove that their Eilenberg-Moore categories are isomorphic to the category of perfect matchings and the category of partial Steiner triple systems, respectively. As a simple application of these results, we describe the product in the categories of perfect matchings and partial Steiner triple systems.
Splines over integer quotient rings
Given a graph with edges labeled by elements in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, a generalized spline is a labeling of each vertex by an integer $\mod m$ such that the labels of adjacent vertices agree modulo the label associated to the edge connecting them. These generalize the classical splines that arise in analysis as well as in a construction of equivariant cohomology often referred to as GKM-theory. We give an algorithm to produce minimum generating sets for the $\mathbb{Z}$-module of splines on connected graphs over $\mathbb{Z}/m \mathbb{Z}$. As an application, we give a quick heuristic to determine the minimum number of generators of the module of splines over $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. We also completely determine the ring of splines over $\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z}$ by providing explicit multiplication tables with respect to the elements of our minimum generating set. Our final result extends some of these results to splines over $\mathbb{Z}$.

In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality between its ordinary and symbolic powers. We give an effective characterization of the Cohen--Macaulay vertex-weighted oriented forests. For edge ideals of transitive weighted oriented graphs we show that Alexander duality holds. It is shown that edge ideals of weighted acyclic tournaments are Cohen--Macaulay and satisfy Alexander duality

In the paper [I. Gutman, N. Trinajstić, Chem. Phys. Lett. 17 (1972), 535], it was shown that total $π$-electron energy ($E$) of a molecule $M$ depends on the quantity $\sum_{v\in V(G)}d_{v}^{2}$ (nowadays known as the "first Zagreb index"), where $G$ is the graph corresponding to $M$, $V(G)$ is the vertex set of $G$ and $d_{v}$ is degree of the vertex $v$. In the same paper, the graph invariant $\sum_{v\in V(G)}d_{v}τ_{v}$ (where $τ_{v}$ is the connection number of $v$, that is the number of vertices at distance 2 from $v$) was also proved to influence $E$, but this invariant was never restudied explicitly. We call it "modified first Zagreb connection index" and denote it by $ZC_{1}^{*}$. In this paper, we characterize the extremal elements with respect to the graph invariant $ZC_{1}^{*}$ among the collection of all $n$-vertex chemical trees.
On a Dehn-Sommerville functional for simplicial complexes
Assume G is a finite abstract simplicial complex with f-vector (v0,v1, ...), and generating function f(x) = sum(k=1 v(k-1) x^k = v0 x + v1 x^2+ v2 x^3 + ..., the Euler characteristic of G can be written as chi(G)=f(0)-f(-1). We study here the functional f1'(0)-f1'(-1), where f1' is the derivative of the generating function f1 of G1. The Barycentric refinement G1 of G is the Whitney complex of the finite simple graph for which the faces of G are the vertices and where two faces are connected if one is a subset of the other. Let L is the connection Laplacian of G, which is L=1+A, where A is the adjacency matrix of the connection graph G', which has the same vertex set than G1 but where two faces are connected they intersect. We have f1'(0)=tr(L) and for the Green function g L^(-1) also f1'(-1)=tr(g) so that eta1(G) = f1'(0)-f1'(-1) is equal to eta(G)=tr(L-L^(-1). The established formula tr(g)=f1'(-1) for the generating function of G1 complements the determinant expression det(L)=det(g)=zeta(-1) for the Bowen-Lanford zeta function zeta(z)=1/det(1-z A) of the connection graph G' of G. We also establish a Gauss-Bonnet formula eta1(G) = sum(x in V(G1) chi(S(x)), where S(x) is the unit sphere of x the graph generated by all vertices in G1 directly connected to x. Finally, we point out that the functional eta0(G) = sum(x in V(G) chi(S(x)) on graphs takes arbitrary small and arbitrary large values on every homotopy type of graphs.
Vertex transitive graphs $G$ with $χ_D(G) > χ(G)$ and small automorphism group

For a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, a vertex labelling $f:V(G)\to\{1,2\ldots,k\}$ is said to be $k$-distinguishing if no non-trivial automorphism of $G$ preserves the sets $f^{-1}(i)$ for each $i\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. The distinguishing chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_D(G)$, is defined as the minimum $k$ such that there is a $k$-distinguishing labelling of $V(G)$ which is also a proper coloring of the vertices of $G$. In this paper, we prove the following theorem: Given $k\in\mathbb{N}$, there exists an infinite sequence of vertex-transitive graphs $G_{i}=(V_i,E_i)$ such that $χ_D(G_i)>χ(G_i)>k$ and $|\mathrm{Aut}(G_i)|=O_k(|V_i|)$, where $\mathrm{Aut}(G_i)$ denotes the full automorphism group of $G_i$. In particular, this answers a problem raised in the paper $χ_D(G)$, $|\mathrm{Aut}(G)|$ and a variant of the Motion lemma.
