We locate the critical threshold $p_c$ at which it becomes likely that the complete graph $K_n$ can be obtained from the Erdős-Rényi graph ${\cal G}_{n,p}$ by iteratively completing copies of $K_4$ minus an edge. This refines work of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris that bounds the threshold up to multiplicative constants.

We conjecture that bounded generalised polynomial functions cannot be generated by finite automata, except for the trivial case when they are ultimately periodic.
Using methods from ergodic theory, we are able to partially resolve this conjecture, proving that any hypothetical counterexample is periodic away from a very sparse and structured set.
In particular, we show that for a polynomial $p(n)$ with at least one irrational coefficient (except for the constant one) and integer $m\geq 2$, the sequence $\lfloor p(n) \rfloor \bmod{m}$ is never automatic.
We also prove that the conjecture is equivalent to the claim that the set of powers of an integer $k\geq 2$ is not given by a generalised polynomial.
Large induced subgraphs with $k$ vertices of almost maximum degree
In this note we prove that for every integer $k$, there exist constants $g_{1}(k)$ and $g_{2}(k)$ such that the following holds. If $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $Δ$ then it contains an induced subgraph $H$ on at least $n - g_{1}(k)\sqrtΔ$ vertices, such that $H$ has $k$ vertices of the same degree of order at least $Δ(H)-g_{2}(k)$. This solves a conjecture of Caro and Yuster up to the constant $g_{2}(k)$.

The Jacobi-Trudi formulas imply that the minors of the banded Toeplitz matrices can be written as certain skew Schur polynomials. In 2012, Alexandersson expressed the corresponding skew partitions in terms of the indices of the struck-out rows and columns. In the present paper, we develop the same idea and obtain some new applications. First, we prove a slight generalization and modification of Alexandersson's formula. Then, we deduce corollaries about the cofactors and eigenvectors of banded Toeplitz matrices, and give new simple proofs to the corresponding formulas published by Trench in 1985.
Two bounds for generalized $3$-connectivity of Cartesian product graphs

The generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_{k}(G)$ of a graph $G$, which was introduced by Chartrand et al.(1984) is a generalization of the concept of vertex connectivity. Let $G$ and $H$ be nontrivial connected graphs. Recently, Li et al. gave a lower bound for the generalized $3$-connectivity of the Cartesian product graph $G \square H$ and proposed a conjecture for the case that $H$ is $3$-connected. In this paper, we give two different forms of lower bounds for the generalized $3$-connectivity of Cartesian product graphs. The first lower bound is stronger than theirs, and the second confirms their conjecture.

We define a new family of noncommutative Bell polynomials in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions and relate it to the dual immaculate basis of quasi-symmetric functions. We obtain noncommutative versions of Grinberg's results [Canad. J. Math. 69 (2017), 21--53], and interpret them in terms of the tridendriform structure of WQSym. We then present a variant of Rey's self-dual Hopf algebra of set partitions [FPSAC'07, Tianjin] adapted to our noncommutative Bell polynomials and give a complete description of the Bell equivalence classes as linear extensions of explicit posets.
Total weight choosability for Halin graphs

A proper total weighting of a graph $G$ is a mapping $φ$ which assigns to each vertex and each edge of $G$ a real number as its weight so that for any edge $uv$ of $G$, $\sum_{e \in E(v)}φ(e)+φ(v) \ne \sum_{e \in E(u)}φ(e)+φ(u)$. A $(k,k')$-list assignment of $G$ is a mapping $L$ which assigns to each vertex $v$ a set $L(v)$ of $k$ permissible weights and to each edge $e$ a set $L(e)$ of $k'$ permissible weights. An $L$-total weighting is a total weighting $φ$ with $φ(z) \in L(z)$ for each $z \in V(G) \cup E(G)$. A graph $G$ is called $(k,k')$-choosable if for every $(k,k')$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, there exists a proper $L$-total weighting. As a strenghtening of the well-known 1-2-3 conjecture, it was conjectured in [ Wong and Zhu, Total weight choosability of graphs, J. Graph Theory 66 (2011), 198-212] that every graph without isolated edge is $(1,3)$-choosable. It is easy to verified this conjecture for trees, however, to prove it for wheels seemed to be quite non-trivial. In this paper, we develop some tools and techniques which enable us to prove this conjecture for generalized Halin graphs.
Generalized Pascal triangle for binomial coefficients of words

We introduce a generalization of Pascal triangle based on binomial coefficients of finite words. These coefficients count the number of times a word appears as a subsequence of another finite word. Similarly to the Sierpiński gasket that can be built as the limit set, for the Hausdorff distance, of a convergent sequence of normalized compact blocks extracted from Pascal triangle modulo $2$, we describe and study the first properties of the subset of $[0, 1] \times [0, 1]$ associated with this extended Pascal triangle modulo a prime $p$.

An edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{conflict-free connected} if, between each pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path containing a color used on exactly one of its edges. The \emph{conflict-free connection number} of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $cfc(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ conflict-free connected. In this paper, we determine all trees $T$ of order $n$ for which $cfc(T)=n-t$, where $t\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2t+2 $. Then we prove that $1\leq cfc(G)\leq n-1$ for a connected graph $G$, and characterize the graphs $G$ with $cfc(G)=1,n-4,n-3,n-2,n-1$, respectively. Finally, we get the Nordhaus-Gaddum-type theorem for the conflict-free connection number of graphs, and prove that if $G$ and $\overline{G}$ are connected, then $4\leq cfc(G)+cfc(\overline{G})\leq n$ and $4\leq cfc(G)\cdot cfc(\overline{G})\leq2(n-2)$, and moreover, $cfc(G)+cfc(\overline{G})=n$ or $cfc(G)\cdot cfc(\overline{G})=2(n-2)$ if and only if one of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is a tree with maximum degree $n-2$ or a $P_5$, and the lower bounds are sharp.

Many digital functions studied in the literature, e.g., the summatory function of the base-$k$ sum-of-digits function, have a behavior showing some periodic fluctuation. Such functions are usually studied using techniques from analytic number theory or linear algebra. In this paper we develop a method based on exotic numeration systems and we apply it on two examples motivated by the study of generalized Pascal triangles and binomial coefficients of words.
On random stable partitions

The stable roommates problem does not necessarily have a solution, i.e. a stable matching. We had found that, for the uniformly random instance, the expected number of solutions converges to $e^{1/2}$ as $n$, the number of members, grows, and with Rob Irving we proved that the limiting probability of solvability is $e^{1/2}/2$, at most. Stephan Mertens's extensive numerics compelled him to conjecture that this probability is of order $n^{-1/4}$. Jimmy Tan introduced a notion of a stable cyclic partition, and proved existence of such a partition for every system of members' preferences, discovering that presence of odd cycles in a stable partition is equivalent to absence of a stable matching. In this paper we show that the expected number of stable partitions with odd cycles grows as $n^{1/4}$. However the standard deviation of that number is of order $n^{3/8}\gg n^{1/4}$, too large to conclude that the odd cycles exist with high probability (whp). Still, as a byproduct, we show that whp the fraction of members with more than one stable "predecessor" is of order $n^{-1/4}$. Furthermore, whp the average rank of a predecessor in every stable partition is of order $n^{1/2}$. The likely size of the largest stable matching is $n/2-O(n^{1/4+o(1)})$, and the likely number of pairs of unmatched members blocking the optimal complete matching is $O(n^{3/4+o(1)})$.
Counting the number of non-zero coefficients in rows of generalized Pascal triangles

This paper is about counting the number of distinct (scattered) subwords occurring in a given word. More precisely, we consider the generalization of the Pascal triangle to binomial coefficients of words and the sequence $(S(n))_{n\ge 0}$ counting the number of positive entries on each row. By introducing a convenient tree structure, we provide a recurrence relation for $(S(n))_{n\ge 0}$. This leads to a connection with the $2$-regular Stern-Brocot sequence and the sequence of denominators occurring in the Farey tree. Then we extend our construction to the Zeckendorf numeration system based on the Fibonacci sequence. Again our tree structure permits us to obtain recurrence relations for and the F-regularity of the corresponding sequence.
A Short Proof for a Lower Bound on the Zero Forcing Number
We provide a short proof of a conjecture of Davila and Kenter concerning a lower bound on the zero forcing number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$. More specifically, we show that $Z(G)\geq (g-2)(δ-2)+2$ for every graph $G$ of girth $g$ at least $3$ and minimum degree $δ$ at least $2$.

We define the rank-metric zeta function of a code as a generating function of its normalized $q$-binomial moments. We show that, as in the Hamming case, the zeta function gives a generating function for the weight enumerators of rank-metric codes. We further prove a functional equation and derive an upper bound for the minimum distance in terms of the reciprocal roots of the zeta function. Finally, we show invariance under suitable puncturing and shortening operators and study the distribution of zeroes of the zeta function for a family of codes.

Let $X$ be a finite collection of sets. We count the number of ways a disjoint union of $n-1$ subsets in $X$ is a set in $X$, and estimate this number from above by $|X|^{c(n)}$ where $$ c(n)=\left(1-\frac{(n-1)\ln (n-1)}{n\ln n} \right)^{-1}. $$ This extends the recent result of Kane-Tao, corresponding to the case $n=3$ where $c(3)\approx 1.725$, to an arbitrary finite number of disjoint $n-1$ partitions.

In combinatorial group testing problems Questioner needs to find a defective element $x\in [n]$ by testing subsets of $[n]$. In [18] the authors introduced a new model, where each element knows the answer for those queries that contain it and each element should be able to identify the defective one. In this article we continue to investigate this kind of models with more defective elements. We also consider related models inspired by secret sharing models, where the elements should share information among them to find out the defectives. Finally the adaptive versions of the different models are also investigated.

We say that a complete nonsingular toric variety (called a toric manifold in this paper) is over $P$ if its quotient by the compact torus is homeomorphic to $P$ as a manifold with corners. Bott manifolds (or Bott towers) are toric manifolds over an $n$-cube $I^n$ and blowing them up at a fixed point produces toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ an $n$-cube with one vertex cut. They are all projective. On the other hand, Oda's $3$-fold, the simplest non-projective toric manifold, is over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$. In this paper, we classify toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ $(n\ge 3)$ as varieties and also as smooth manifolds. As a consequence, it turns out that (1) there are many non-projective toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ but they are all diffeomorphic, and (2) toric manifolds over $\mathrm{vc}(I^n)$ in some class are determined by their cohomology rings as varieties among toric manifolds.

We prove that the Grothendieck rings of category $\mathcal{C}^{(t)}_Q$ over quantum affine algebras $U_q'(\g^{(t)})$ $(t=1,2)$ associated to each Dynkin quiver $Q$ of finite type $A_{2n-1}$ (resp. $D_{n+1}$) is isomorphic to one of category $\mathcal{C}_{\mQ}$ over the Langlands dual $U_q'({^L}\g^{(2)})$ of $U_q'(\g^{(2)})$ associated to any twisted adapted class $[\mQ]$ of $A_{2n-1}$ (resp. $D_{n+1}$). This results provide partial answers of conjectures of Frenkel-Hernandez on Langlands duality for finite-dimensional representation of quantum affine algebras.
A note on the number of edges in a Hamiltonian graph with no repeated cycle length
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph obtained by adding chords to a cycle of length $n$. Markström asked for the maximum number of edges in $G$ if there are no two cycles in $G$ with the same length. A simple counting argument shows that such a graph can have at most $n + \sqrt{2n} +1 $ edges. Using difference sets in $\mathbb{Z}_n$, we show that for infinitely many $n$, there is an $n$-vertex Hamiltonian graph with $n + \sqrt{n - 3/4} - 3/2$ edges and no repeated cycle length.

We consider the decomposition into irreducible components of the external power $Λ^p(\mathbb{C}^m\otimes \mathbb{C}^n)$ regarded as a $\operatorname{GL}_m\times\operatorname{GL}_n$-module. Skew Howe duality implies that the Young diagrams from each pair $(λ,μ)$ which contributes to this decomposition turn out to be conjugate to each other, i.e.~$μ=λ'$. We show that the Young diagram $λ$ which corresponds to a randomly selected irreducible component $(λ,λ')$ has the same distribution as the Young diagram which consists of the boxes with entries $\leq p$ of a random Young tableau of rectangular shape with $m$ rows and $n$ columns. This observation allows treatment of the asymptotic version of this decomposition in the limit as $m,n,p\to\infty$ tend to infinity.
