Non-existence of antipodal cages of even girth
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Moore bound $M(k,g)$ is a lower bound on the order of $k$-regular graphs of girth $g$ (denoted $(k,g)$-graphs). The excess $e$ of a $(k,g)$-graph of order $n$ is the difference $n-M(k,g).$ A $(k,g)$-cage is a $(k,g)$-graph with the fewest possible number of vertices, among all $(k,g)$-graphs. A graph of diameter $d$ is said to be antipodal if, for any vertices $u, v, w$ such that $d(u,v)=d$ and $d(u, w)=d$, it follows that $d(v, w)=d$ or $v=w.$ In [4] Biggs and Ito proved that any $(k,g)$-cage of even girth $g=2d\geq6$ and excess $e\leq k-2$ is a bipartite graph of diameter $d+1.$ In this paper we treat the $(k,g)$-cages of even girth and excess $e\leq k-2.$ Based on a spectral analysis we give a relation between the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A$ and the distance matrix $A_{d+1}$ of such cages. Moreover, following the methodology used in [4] and [13], we prove the non-existence of the antipodal $(k,g)$-cages of excess $e$, where $k\geq e+2\geq4$ and $g=2d\geq14.$
A generalization of Kátai's orthogonality criterion with applications
Published in Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems, Volume 39 (2019), Number 5, pp. 2581-2612 • View Publication • BIB
We study properties of arithmetic sets coming from multiplicative number theory and obtain applications in the theory of uniform distribution and ergodic theory. Our main theorem is a generalization of Kátai's orthogonality criterion. Here is a special case of this theorem: Let $a\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ be a bounded sequence satisfying $$ \sum_{n\leq x} a(pn)\overline{a(qn)} = {\rm o}(x),~\text{for all distinct primes $p$ and $q$.} $$ Then for any multiplicative function $f$ and any $z\in\mathbb{C}$ the indicator function of the level set $E=\{n\in\mathbb{N}:f(n)=z\}$ satisfies $$ \sum_{n\leq x} \mathbb{1}_E(n)a(n)={\rm o}(x). $$ With the help of this theorem one can show that if $E=\{n_1<n_2<\ldots\}$ is a level set of a multiplicative function having positive upper density, then for a large class of sufficiently smooth functions $h\colon(0,\infty)\to\mathbb{R}$ the sequence $(h(n_j))_{j\in\mathbb{N}}$ is uniformly distributed $\bmod~1$. This class of functions $h(t)$ includes: all polynomials $p(t)=a_kt^k+\ldots+a_1t+a_0$ such that at least one of the coefficients $a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k$ is irrational, $t^c$ for any $c>0$ with $c\notin \mathbb{N}$, $\log^r(t)$ for any $r>2$, $\log(Γ(t))$, $t\log(t)$, and $\frac{t}{\log t}$. The uniform distribution results, in turn, allow us to obtain new examples of ergodic sequences, i.e. sequences along which the ergodic theorem holds.

Lattice exit models
We discuss a class of problems which we call lattice exit models. At one level, these problems provide undergraduate level exercises in labeling the vertices of graphs (e.g., depth first search). At another level (theorems about large scale regularities of labels) they provide concrete geometric examples of ZFC independence. We note some combinatorial and algorithmic implications.
Colourings of cubic graphs inducing isomorphic monochromatic subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-bisection of a bridgeless cubic graph $G$ is a $2$-colouring of its vertex set such that the colour classes have the same cardinality and all connected components in the two subgraphs induced by the colour classes (monochromatic components in what follows) have order at most $k$. Ban and Linial conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph admits a $2$-bisection except for the Petersen graph. A similar problem for the edge set of cubic graphs has been studied: Wormald conjectured that every cubic graph $G$ with $|E(G)| \equiv 0 \pmod 2$ has a $2$-edge colouring such that the two monochromatic subgraphs are isomorphic linear forests (i.e. a forest whose components are paths). Finally, Ando conjectured that every cubic graph admits a bisection such that the two induced monochromatic subgraphs are isomorphic. In this paper, we give a detailed insight into the conjectures of Ban-Linial and Wormald and provide evidence of a strong relation of both of them with Ando's conjecture. Furthermore, we also give computational and theoretical evidence in their support. As a result, we pose some open problems stronger than the above mentioned conjectures. Moreover, we prove Ban-Linial's conjecture for cubic cycle permutation graphs. As a by-product of studying $2$-edge colourings of cubic graphs having linear forests as monochromatic components, we also give a negative answer to a problem posed by Jackson and Wormald about certain decompositions of cubic graphs into linear forests.

Counting chemical reaction networks with NAUTY
It is useful to have complete lists of nonisomorphic chemical reaction networks (CRNs) of a given size, with or without various restrictions. One may, for example, be interested in exploring how often certain dynamical behaviours occur in small CRNs, or wish to find examples to illustrate some aspect of the theory. In such cases, it is natural to examine one representative from each isomorphism class of CRNs. Inspired by the related project of Deckard et al (Enumeration and online library of mass-action reaction networks. http://arXiv.org/abs/0901.3067, 2009), this document outlines the methodology involved in listing all CRNs in various classes of interest including, for example, general CRNs, dynamically nontrivial CRNs, weakly reversible CRNs, fully open CRNs, etc. The accompanying data (i.e., lists of nonisomorphic CRNs in the various classes) is at https://reaction-networks.net/networks/. Note that both document and data are work in progress.

Hamilton cycles in infinite cubic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Investigating a problem of B. Mohar, we show that every one-ended Hamiltonian cubic graph with end degree 3 contains a second Hamilton cycle. We also construct two examples showing that this result does not extend to give a third Hamilton cycle, nor that it extends to the two-ended case.

Cycle decompositions of pathwidth-6 graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hajós conjecture asserts that a simple Eulerian graph on n vertices can be decomposed into at most (n - 1)/2 cycles. The conjecture is only proved for graph classes in which every element contains vertices of degree 2 or 4. We develop new techniques to construct cycle decompositions. They work on the common neighbourhood of two degree-6 vertices. With these techniques we find structures that cannot occur in a minimal counterexample to Hajós conjecture and verify the conjecture for Eulerian graphs of pathwidth at most 6. This implies that these graphs satisfy the small cycle double cover conjecture.

On the number of faces of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes
Published in Algebra i analiz, 33:3 (2021), 169--190; translated in St. Petersburg Math. J., 33:3 (2022), 553--568 • View Publication • BIB
We obtain a recurrence relation for the f-polynomial of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes by analyzing geometric properties of a linear projection of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope onto a cube. We apply this recurrence relation to find explicit formulas for the f-polynomials and h-polynomials of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes that belong to several simplest one-parameter families.

Generalized bilinear forms graphs and MDR codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the generalized bilinear forms graph $Γ_d$ over a residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$. We show that $Γ_d$ is a connected vertex transitive graph, and completely determine its independence number, clique number, chromatic number and maximum cliques. We also prove that cores of both $Γ_d$ and its complement are maximum cliques. The graph $Γ_d$ is useful for error-correcting codes. We show that every largest independent set of $Γ_d$ is both an MRD code over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ and a usual MDS code. Moreover, there is a largest independent set of $Γ_d$ to be a linear code over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$.

Hall-Littlewood RSK field
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symmetry, and a "bijectivization" of the skew-Cauchy identity.

On shellability for a poset of even subgraphs of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a simple graph $G$, a poset of its even subgraphs was firstly considered by S. Choi and H. Park to study the topology of a real toric manifold associated with $G$. S. Choi and the authors extended this to a graph allowing multiple edges, motivated by the work on the pseudograph associahedron of Carr, Devadoss and Forcey. In this paper, we completely characterize the graphs (allowing multiple edges) whose posets of even subgraphs are always shellable. By the result, we also compute the Betti numbers of a real toric manifold corresponding to a path with two multiple edges.

Regularity of powers of cover ideals of unimodular hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\H$ be a unimodular hypergraph over the vertex set $[n]$ and let $J(\H)$ be the cover ideal of $\H$ in the polynomial ring $R=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. We show that $\reg J(\H)^s$ is a linear function in $s$ for all $s\geqslant r\left\lceil \frac{n}{2}\right\rceil+1$ where $r$ is the rank of $\H$. Moreover for every $i$, $a_i(R/J(\H)^s)$ is also a linear function in $s$ for $s \geqslant n^2$.

Vehicle Routing with Drones
We introduce a package service model where trucks as well as drones can deliver packages. Drones can travel on trucks or fly; but while flying, drones can only carry one package at a time and have to return to a truck to charge after each delivery. We present a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem of finding a good schedule for all drones and trucks. The algorithm is based on two nested local searches, thus the definition of suitable neighbourhoods of solutions is crucial for the algorithm. Empirical tests show that our algorithm performs significantly better than a natural Greedy algorithm. Moreover, the savings compared to solutions without drones turn out to be substantial, suggesting that delivery systems might considerably benefit from using drones in addition to trucks.

Ballot tilings and increasing trees
We study enumerations of Dyck and ballot tilings, which are tilings of a region determined by two Dyck or ballot paths. We give bijective proofs to two formulae of enumerations of Dyck tilings through Hermite histories. We show that one of the formulae is equal to a certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial. For a ballot tiling, we establish formulae which are analogues of formulae for Dyck tilings. Especially, the generating functions have factorized expressions. The key tool is a planted plane tree and its increasing labellings. We also introduce a generalized perfect matching which is bijective to an Hermite history for a ballot tiling. By combining these objects, we obtain various expressions of a generating function of ballot tilings with a fixed lower path.

Shifted tableaux and products of Schur's symmetric functions
We introduce a new combinatorial object, semistandard increasing decomposition tableau and study its relation to a semistandard decomposition tableau introduced by Kraśkiewicz and developed by Lam and Serrano. We also introduce generalized Littlewood--Richardson coefficients for products of Schur's symmetric functions and give combinatorial descriptions in terms of tableau words. The insertion algorithms play central roles for proofs. A new description of shifted Littlewood--Richardson coefficients is given in terms of semistandard increasing decomposition tableaux. We show that a "big" Schur function is expressed as a sum of products of two Schur $P$-functions, and vice versa. As an application, we derive two Giambelli formulae for big Schur functions: one is a determinant and the other is a Pfaffian.

Expected reliability of communication protocols
We consider the problem of sending a message from a sender $s$ to a receiver $r$ through an unreliable network by specifying in a protocol what each vertex is supposed to do if it receives the message from one of its neighbors. A protocol for routing a message in such a graph is finite if it never floods $r$ with an infinite number of copies of the message. The expected reliability of a given protocol is the probability that a message sent from $s$ reaches $r$ when the edges of the network fail independently with probability $1-p$. We discuss, for given networks, the properties of finite protocols with maximum expected reliability in the case when $p$ is close to 0 or 1, and we describe networks for which no one protocol is optimal for all values of $p$. In general, finding an optimal protocol for a given network and fixed probability is challenging and many open problems remain.

On permutation trinomials of type $x^{2p^s+r}+x^{p^{s}+r} +λx^r$
We determine all permutation trinomials of type $x^{2p^s+r}+x^{p^s+r}+λx^r$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^t}$ when $(2p^s+r)^4<p^t$. This partially extends a previous result by Bhattacharya and Sarkar in the case $p=2$, $r=1$.

Conjectures about certain parabolic Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials
Published in Geometric Aspects of the Trace Formula, Simons Symposia (Springer, 2018), p. 267-298 • View Publication • BIB
Irreducibility results for parabolic induction of representations of the general linear group over a local non-archimedean field can be formulated in terms of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of type $A$. Spurred by these results and some computer calculations, we conjecture that certain alternating sums of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials known as parabolic Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials satisfy properties analogous to those of the ordinary ones.

On $(k,d)$-Hooked Skolem Graceful Graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Information and System Sciences 41 (2016) No. 1-2, 7-15 • Search Publication
A graph $(p, q)$ graph $G = (V, E)$ is said to be $(k, d)$-hooked Skolem graceful if there exists a bijection $f:V (G)\rightarrow \{1, 2, \dots, p-1, p+1\}$ such that the induced edge labeling $g_f : E \rightarrow \{k, k+d, \dots, k+(n-1)d \}$ defined by $g_f (uv) = |f(u) - f(v)|$ $\forall uv \in E$ is also bijective, where $k$ and $d$ are positive integers. Such a labeling $f$ is called $(k, d)$-hooked Skolem graceful labeling of $G.$ Note that when $k = d = 1$, this notion coincides with that of Hooked Skolem (HS) graceful labeling of the graph G. In this paper, we present some preliminary results on $(k, d)$-hooked Skolem graceful graphs and prove that $nK_2$ is $(2, 1)$-hooked Skolem graceful if and only if $n \equiv 1~\mbox{or}~2(\bmod~ 4)$.
