Forbidden induced subposets in the grid
In this short paper, we prove the following generalization of a result of Methuku and Pálvölgyi. Let $P$ be a poset, then there exists a constant $C_{P}$ with the following property. Let $k$ and $n$ be arbitrary positive integers such that $n$ is at least the dimension of $P$, and let $w$ be the size of the largest antichain of the grid $[k]^{n}$ endowed with the usual pointwise ordering. If $S$ is a subset of $[k]^{n}$ not containing an induced copy of $P$, then $|S|\leq C_{P}w$.
The maximal subgroups and the complexity of the flow semigroup of finite (di)graphs
The flow semigroup, introduced by John Rhodes, is an invariant for digraphs and a complete invariant for graphs. After collecting together previous partial results, we refine and prove Rhodes's conjecture on the structure of the maximal groups in the flow semigroup for finite, antisymmetric, strongly connected digraphs. Building on this result, we investigate and fully describe the structure and actions of the maximal subgroups of the flow semigroup acting on all but $k$ points for all finite digraphs and graphs for all $k\geq 1$. A linear algorithm (in the number of edges) is presented to determine these so-called `defect $k$ groups' for any finite (di)graph. Finally, we prove that the complexity of the flow semigroup of a 2-vertex connected (and strongly connected di)graph with $n$ vertices is $n-2$, completely confirming Rhodes's conjecture for such (di)graphs.

Multidesigns for a graph pair of order 6
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, a $(G,H)$-multidecomposition of $K_{n}$ is a partition of the edges of $K_{n}$ into copies of $G$ and $H$ such that at least one copy of each is used. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of $(C_{6},\overline{C}_{6})$-multidecomposition of $K_{n}$ where $C_{6}$ denotes a cycle of length 6 and $\overline{C}_{6}$ denotes the complement of $C_{6}$. A $(G,H)$-multipacking of $K_{n}$ is a partition of a subset of the edges of $K_{n}$ into copies of $G$ and $H$ such that at least one copy of each is used. The set consisting of the edges of $K_{n}$ that are not used in any copy of either $G$ or $H$ is called the \emph{leave} of the multipacking. A $(G,H)$-multipacking of $K_{n}$ is called \emph{maximum} if the cardinality of the leave is minimum with respect to all $(G,H)$-multipackings of $K_{n}$. A $(G,H)$-multicovering of $K_{n}$ is a $(G,H)$-multidecomposition of $K_{n}$ where some edges can be used repeatedly in copies of $G$ or $H$. The (multi)set of repeated edges is called the \emph{padding} of the $(G,H)$-multicovering of $K_{n}$. A $(G,H)$-multicovering is called \emph{minimum} if the cardinality of the padding is minimum with respect to all $(G,H)$-multicoverings of $K_{n}$. We also characterize the cardinality of the leaves and paddings of maximum $(C_6, \overline{C}_6)$-multipackings and minimum $(C_6, \overline{C}_6)$-multicoverings of $K_{n}$.

A Demazure crystal construction for Schubert polynomials
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 1(2) (2018) 225-247 • View Publication • BIB
Stanley symmetric functions are the stable limits of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we show that, conversely, Schubert polynomials are Demazure truncations of Stanley symmetric functions. This parallels the relationship between Schur functions and Demazure characters for the general linear group. We establish this connection by imposing a Demazure crystal structure on key tableaux, recently introduced by the first author in connection with Demazure characters and Schubert polynomials, and linking this to the type A crystal structure on reduced word factorizations, recently introduced by Morse and the second author in connection with Stanley symmetric functions.
A New Lower Bound for van der Waerden Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove a new recurrence relation on the van der Waerden numbers, $w(r,k)$. In particular, if $p$ is a prime and $p\leq k$ then $w(r, k) > p \cdot \left(w\left(r - \left\lceil \frac{r}{p}\right\rceil, k\right) -1\right)$. This recurrence gives the lower bound $w(r, p+1) > p^{r-1}2^p$ when $r \leq p$, which generalizes Berlekamp's theorem on 2-colorings, and gives the best known bound for a large interval of $r$. The recurrence can also be used to construct explicit valid colorings, and it improves known lower bounds on small van der Waerden numbers.

Balanced vertices in labeled rooted trees
In a rooted tree, we call a vertex {\em balanced} if it is at equal distance from all its descendant leaves. We count balanced vertices in three different tree varieties. For decreasing binary trees, we can prove that the probability that a vertex chosen uniformly at random from the set of all trees of a given size is balanced is monotone decreasing.

Some remarks on the asymmetric sum--product phenomenon

Using some new observations connected to higher energies, we obtain quantitative lower bounds on $\max\{|AB|, |A+C| \}$ and $\max\{|(A+α)B|, |A+C|\}$, $α\neq 0$ in the regime when the sizes of finite subsets $A,B,C$ of a field differ significantly.

On sampling graphical Markov models
We consider sampling and enumeration problems for Markov equivalence classes. We create and analyze a Markov chain for uniform random sampling on the DAGs inside a Markov equivalence class. Though the worst case is exponentially slow mixing, we find a condition on the Markov equivalence class for polynomial time mixing. We also investigate the ratio of Markov equivalence classes to DAGs and a Markov chain of He, Jia, and Yu for random sampling of sparse Markov equivalence classes.

Probabilistic and Geometrical Applications to Graph Theory
This paper consists of two halves. In the first half of the paper, we consider real-valued functions $f$ whose domain is the vertex set of a graph $G$ and that are Lipschitz with respect to the graph distance. By placing a uniform distribution on the vertex set, we treat $f$ as a random variable. We investigate the link between the isoperimetric function of $G$ and the functions $f$ that have maximum variance or meet the bound established by the subgaussian inequality. We present several results describing the extremal functions, and use those results to resolve: (A) a conjecture by Bobkov, Houdré, and Tetali characterizing the extremal functions of the subgaussian inequality of the odd cycle, and (B) a conjecture by Alon, Boppana, and Spencer on the relationship between maximum variance functions and the isoperimetric function of product graphs. While establishing a discrete analogue of the curved Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the discrete hypercube, Ollivier and Villani suggested several avenues for research. We resolve them in second half of the paper as follows. (1) They propose that a bound on $t$-midpoints can be obtained by repeated application of the bound on midpoints, if the original sets are convex. We construct a specific example where this reasoning fails, and then prove our construction is general by characterizing the convex sets in the discrete hypercube. (2) A second proposed technique to bound $t$-midpoints involves new results in concentration of measure. We follow through on this proposal, with heavy use on results from the first half of the paper. (3) We show that the curvature of the discrete hypercube is not positive or zero.
The tessellation problem of quantum walks
Published in Theoretical Computer Science 801, 175-191, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Quantum walks have received a great deal of attention recently because they can be used to develop new quantum algorithms and to simulate interesting quantum systems. In this work, we focus on a model called staggered quantum walk, which employs advanced ideas of graph theory and has the advantage of including the most important instances of other discrete-time models. The evolution operator of the staggered model is obtained from a tessellation cover, which is defined in terms of a set of partitions of the graph into cliques. It is important to establish the minimum number of tessellations required in a tessellation cover, and what classes of graphs admit a small number of tessellations. We describe two main results: (1) infinite classes of graphs where we relate the chromatic number of the clique graph to the minimum number of tessellations required in a tessellation cover, and (2) the problem of deciding whether a graph is $k$-tessellable for $k\ge 3$ is NP-complete.

Circular law for the sum of random permutation matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P_n^1,\dots, P_n^d$ be $n\times n$ permutation matrices drawn independently and uniformly at random, and set $S_n^d:=\sum_{\ell=1}^d P_n^\ell$. We show that if $\log^{12}n/(\log \log n)^{4} \le d=O(n)$, then the empirical spectral distribution of $S_n^d/\sqrt{d}$ converges weakly to the circular law in probability as $n \to \infty$.
The structure of delta-matroids with width one twists
Published • View Publication • BIB
The width of a delta-matroid is the difference in size between a maximal and minimal feasible set. We give a Rough Structure Theorem for delta-matroids that admit a twist of width one. We apply this theorem to give an excluded minor characterisation of delta-matroids that admit a twist of width at most one.

Cut-norm and entropy minimization over weak* limits
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, series B, 137 (2019), pages 232-263 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the accumulation points of a sequence of graphs $G_1,G_2,G_3,\ldots$ with respect to the cut-distance are exactly the weak$^*$ limit points of subsequences of the adjacency matrices (when all possible orders of the vertices are considered) that minimize the entropy over all weak$^*$ limit points of the corresponding subsequence. In fact, the entropy can be replaced by any map $W\mapsto \int\int f(W(x,y))$, where $f$ is a continuous and strictly concave function. Our proofs are elementary, and do not use the regularity lemma.

Boolean dimension and local dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
Dimension is a standard and well-studied measure of complexity of posets. Recent research has provided many new upper bounds on the dimension for various structurally restricted classes of posets. Bounded dimension gives a succinct representation of the poset, admitting constant response time for queries of the form "is $x<y$?". This application motivates looking for stronger notions of dimension, possibly leading to succinct representations for more general classes of posets. We focus on two: boolean dimension, introduced in the 1980s and revisited in recent research, and local dimension, a very new one. We determine precisely which values of dimension/boolean dimension/local dimension imply that the two other parameters are bounded.

Hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an overview of some of the main results from the theories of hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems. In particular, we list a number of summations, transformations and explicit evaluations for such multiple series and integrals. We concentrate on such results which do not directly extend to the elliptic level. This text is a provisional version of a chapter on hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems for volume 2 of the new Askey--Bateman project which deals with "Multivariable special functions".
Distributed Dominating Set Approximations beyond Planar Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Minimum Dominating Set (MDS) problem is one of the most fundamental and challenging problems in distributed computing. While it is well-known that minimum dominating sets cannot be approximated locally on general graphs, over the last years, there has been much progress on computing local approximations on sparse graphs, and in particular planar graphs. In this paper we study distributed and deterministic MDS approximation algorithms for graph classes beyond planar graphs. In particular, we show that existing approximation bounds for planar graphs can be lifted to bounded genus graphs, and present (1) a local constant-time, constant-factor MDS approximation algorithm and (2) a local $\mathcal{O}(\log^*{n})$-time approximation scheme. Our main technical contribution is a new analysis of a slightly modified variant of an existing algorithm by Lenzen et al. Interestingly, unlike existing proofs for planar graphs, our analysis does not rely on direct topological arguments.

Arrangements of homothets of a convex body II
Published in Contributions to Discrete Mathematics 13 (2018), 116--123 • View Publication • BIB
A family of homothets of an o-symmetric convex body K in d-dimensional Euclidean space is called a Minkowski arrangement if no homothet contains the center of any other homothet in its interior. We show that any pairwise intersecting Minkowski arrangement of a d-dimensional convex body has at most $2\cdot 3^d$ members. This improves a result of Polyanskii (arXiv:1610.04400). Using similar ideas, we also give a proof the following result of Polyanskii: Let $K_1,\dots,K_n$ be a sequence of homothets of the o-symmetric convex body $K$, such that for any $i<j$, the center of $K_j$ lies on the boundary of $K_i$. Then $n\leq O(3^d d)$.

Entanglement properties of quantum grid states
Published in Phys. Rev. A 97, 062340 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
Grid states form a discrete set of mixed quantum states that can be described by graphs. We characterize the entanglement properties of these states and provide methods to evaluate entanglement criteria for grid states in a graphical way. With these ideas we find bound entangled grid states for two-particle systems of any dimension and multiparticle grid states that provide examples for the different aspects of genuine multiparticle entanglement. Our findings suggest that entanglement theory for grid states, although being a discrete set, has already a complexity similar to the one for general states.
On the number of types in sparse graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for every class of graphs $\mathcal{C}$ which is nowhere dense, as defined by Nesetril and Ossona de Mendez, and for every first order formula $φ(\bar x,\bar y)$, whenever one draws a graph $G\in \mathcal{C}$ and a subset of its nodes $A$, the number of subsets of $A^{|\bar y|}$ which are of the form $\{\bar v\in A^{|\bar y|}\, \colon\, G\modelsφ(\bar u,\bar v)\}$ for some valuation $\bar u$ of $\bar x$ in $G$ is bounded by $\mathcal{O}(|A|^{|\bar x|+ε})$, for every $ε>0$. This provides optimal bounds on the VC-density of first-order definable set systems in nowhere dense graph classes. We also give two new proofs of upper bounds on quantities in nowhere dense classes which are relevant for their logical treatment. Firstly, we provide a new proof of the fact that nowhere dense classes are uniformly quasi-wide, implying explicit, polynomial upper bounds on the functions relating the two notions. Secondly, we give a new combinatorial proof of the result of Adler and Adler stating that every nowhere dense class of graphs is stable. In contrast to the previous proofs of the above results, our proofs are completely finitistic and constructive, and yield explicit and computable upper bounds on quantities related to uniform quasi-wideness (margins) and stability (ladder indices).

On Star Coloring of Splitting Graphs
In this paper, we consider the problem of a star coloring. In general case the problems in NP-complete. We establish the star chromatic number for splitting graph of complete and complete bipartite graphs, as well of paths and cycles. Our proofs are constructive, so they lead to appropriate star colorings of graphs under consideration.
