The Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli-type matrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the study of determinant formulas for Schur functions, Hamel and Goulden introduced a class of Giambelli-type matrices with respect to outside decompositions of partition diagrams, which unify the Jacobi-Trudi matrices, the Giambelli matrices and the Lascoux-Pragacz matrices. Stanley determined the Smith normal form of a specialized Jacobi-Trudi matrix. Motivated by Stanley's work, we obtain the Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli matrix and a specialized Lascoux-Pragacz matrix. Furthermore, we show that, for a given partition, the Smith normal form of any specialized Giambelli-type matrix can be obtained from that of the corresponding specialization of the classical Giambelli matrix by a sequence of stabilization operations.

Combined Properties of Finite Sums And Finite products near zero
It was proved that whenever N is partitioned into finitely many cells, one cell must contain arbitrary length geo-arithmetic progressions. It was also proved that arithmetic and geometric progressions can be nicely intertwined in one cell of partition, whenever N is partitioned into finitely many cells. In this article we shall prove that similar types of results also hold near zero in some suitable dense subsemigroup S of ((0; 1) ; +), using the Stone- Cech compactification of ?S.

Fibonacci words in hyperbolic Pascal triangles
The hyperbolic Pascal triangle ${\cal HPT}_{4,q}$ $(q\ge5)$ is a new mathematical construction, which is a geometrical generalization of Pascal's arithmetical triangle. In the present study we show that a natural pattern of rows of ${\cal HPT}_{4,5}$ is almost the same as the sequence consisting of every second term of the well-known Fibonacci words. Further, we give a generalization of the Fibonacci words using the hyperbolic Pascal triangles. The geometrical properties of a ${\cal HPT}_{4,q}$ imply a graph structure between the finite Fibonacci words.

Direction sets, Lipschitz graphs and density
We consider the direction set determined by various subsets $E$ of Euclidean space and show that there is a trichotomy: Either (i) The subset is the graph of a Lipschitz function and the direction set is not dense in the sphere, (ii) The subset is the graph of a non-Lipschitz function and the direction set is dense but not everything, or (iii) The subset is not a graph (in a suitable sense) and every direction is determined by the set. We then explore a variety of results based on this trichotomy under additional assumptions on the set $E$.

Endgames in bidding chess
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bidding chess is a chess variant where instead of alternating play, players bid for the opportunity to move. Generalizing a known result on so-called Richman games, we show that for a natural class of games including bidding chess, each position can be assigned rational upper and lower values corresponding to the limit proportion of money that Black (say) needs in order to force a win and to avoid losing, respectively. We have computed these values for all three-piece endgames, and in all cases, the upper and lower values coincide. Already with three pieces, the game is quite complex, and the values have denominators of up to 138 digits.

Volume computation for sparse boolean quadric relaxations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by understanding the quality of tractable convex relaxations of intractable polytopes, Ko et al. gave a closed-form expression for the volume of a standard relaxation $\mathscr{Q}(G)$ of the boolean quadric polytope (also known as the (full) correlation polytope) $\mathscr{P}(G)$ of the complete graph $G=K_n$. We extend this work to structured sparse graphs, giving: (i) an efficient algorithm for $vol(\mathscr{Q}(G))$ when $G$ has bounded tree width, (ii) closed-form expressions (and asymptotic behaviors) for $vol(\mathscr{Q}(G))$ for all stars, paths, and cycles, and (iii) a closed-form expression for $vol(\mathscr{P}(G))$ for all cycles. Further, we demonstrate that when $G$ is a cycle, the simple relaxation $\mathscr{Q}(G)$ is a very close model for the much more complicated $\mathscr{P}(G)$. Additionally, we give some computational results demonstrating that this behavior of the cycle seems to extend to more complicated graphs. Finally, we speculate on the possibility of extending some of our results to cactii or even series-parallel graphs.

Dual wavefunction of the symplectic ice
Published in Reports on Mathematical Physics 80 (2017) 391-414 • View Publication • BIB
The wavefunction of the free-fermion six-vertex model was found to give a natural realization of the Tokuyama combinatorial formula for the Schur polynomials by Bump-Brubaker-Friedberg. Recently, we studied the correspondence between the dual version of the wavefunction and the Schur polynomials, which gave rise to another combinatorial formula. In this paper, we extend the analysis to the reflecting boundary condition, and show the exact correspondence between the dual wavefunction and the symplectic Schur functions. This gives a dual version of the integrable model realization of the symplectic Schur functions by Ivanov. We also generalize to the correspondence between the wavefunction, the dual wavefunction of the six-vertex model and the factorial symplectic Schur functions by the inhomogeneous generalization of the model.

Steiner Distance in Product Networks
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Graph Theory (October 23, 2018) dmtcs:3175 • View Publication • BIB
For a connected graph $G$ of order at least $2$ and $S\subseteq V(G)$, the \emph{Steiner distance} $d_G(S)$ among the vertices of $S$ is the minimum size among all connected subgraphs whose vertex sets contain $S$. Let $n$ and $k$ be two integers with $2\leq k\leq n$. Then the \emph{Steiner $k$-eccentricity $e_k(v)$} of a vertex $v$ of $G$ is defined by $e_k(v)=\max \{d_G(S)\,|\,S\subseteq V(G), \ |S|=k, \ and \ v\in S\}$. Furthermore, the \emph{Steiner $k$-diameter} of $G$ is $sdiam_k(G)=\max \{e_k(v)\,|\, v\in V(G)\}$. In this paper, we investigate the Steiner distance and Steiner $k$-diameter of Cartesian and lexicographical product graphs. Also, we study the Steiner $k$-diameter of some networks.

Distance-Uniform Graphs with Large Diameter
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $ε$-distance-uniform graph is one in which from every vertex, all but an $ε$-fraction of the remaining vertices are at some fixed distance $d$, called the critical distance. We consider the maximum possible value of $d$ in an $ε$-distance-uniform graph with $n$ vertices. We show that for $\frac1n \le ε\le \frac1{\log n}$, there exist $ε$-distance-uniform graphs with critical distance $2^{Ω(\frac{\log n}{\log ε^{-1}})}$, disproving a conjecture of Alon et al. that $d$ can be at most logarithmic in $n$. We also show that our construction is best possible, in the sense that an upper bound on $d$ of the form $2^{O(\frac{\log n}{\log ε^{-1}})}$ holds for all $ε$ and $n$.

An example concerning set addition in F_2^n
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct sets $A, B$ in a vector space over $\mathbb{F}_2$ with the property that $A$ is "statistically" almost closed under addition by $B$ in the sense that $a + b$ almost always lies in $A$ when $a \in A, b \in B$, but which is extremely far from being "combinatorially" almost closed under addition by $B$: if $A' \subset A$, $B' \subset B$ and $A' + B'$ is comparable in size to $A'$ then $|B'| \lessapprox |B|^{1/2}$.

On the intersection graph of ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $m>1$ be an integer, and let $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ be the set of all non-zero proper ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$. The intersection graph of ideals of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, denoted by $G(\mathbb{Z}_m)$, is a graph with vertices $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ and two distinct vertices $I,J\in I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$ are adjacent if and only if $I\cap J\neq 0$. Let $n>1$ be an integer and $\mathbb{Z}_n$ be a $\mathbb{Z}_m$-module. In this paper, we introduce and study a kind of graph structure of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, denoted by $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$. It is the undirected graph with the vertex set $I(\mathbb{Z}_m)^*$, and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $I\mathbb{Z}_n\cap J\mathbb{Z}_n\neq 0$. Clearly, $G_m(\mathbb{Z}_m)=G(\mathbb{Z}_m)$. We obtain some graph theoretical properties of $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$ and we compute some of its numerical invariants, namely girth, independence number, domination number, maximum degree and chromatic index. We also determine all integer numbers $n$ and $m$ for which $G_n(\mathbb{Z}_m)$ is Eulerian.
Virtually fibering random right-angled Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the Right-Angled Coxeter group $C=C(G)$ associated to a random graph $G\sim \mathcal{G}(n,p)$ with $\frac{\log n + \log\log n + ω(1)}{n} \leq p < 1- ω(n^{-2})$ virtually algebraically fibers. This means that $C$ has a finite index subgroup $C'$ and a finitely generated normal subgroup $N\subset C'$ such that $C'/N \cong \mathbb{Z}$. We also obtain the corresponding hitting time statements, more precisely, we show that as soon as $G$ has minimum degree at least 2 and as long as it is not the complete graph, then $C(G)$ virtually algebraically fibers. The result builds upon the work of Jankiewicz, Norin, and Wise and it is essentially best possible.

Formulae of $\imath$-divided powers in ${\mathbf U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Alg. 222 (2018), 2667-2702 • View Publication • BIB
The existence of the $\imath$-canonical basis (also known as the $\imath$-divided powers) for the coideal subalgebra of the quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ were established by Bao and Wang, with conjectural explicit formulae. In this paper we prove the conjectured formulae of these $\imath$-divided powers. This is achieved by first establishing closed formulae of the $\imath$-divided powers in basis for quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and then formulae for the $\imath$-canonical basis in terms of Lusztig's divided powers in each finite-dimensional simple module of quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. These formulae exhibit integrality and positivity properties.

Coloring ($P_6$, diamond, $K_4$)-free graphs
We show that every ($P_6$, diamond, $K_4$)-free graph is $6$-colorable. Moreover, we give an example of a ($P_6$, diamond, $K_4$)-free graph $G$ with $χ(G) = 6$. This generalizes some known results in the literature.

The generalized k-resultant modulus set problem in finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb F_q^d$ be the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. Given $k$ sets $E_j\subset \mathbb F_q^d$ for $j=1,2,\ldots, k$, the generalized $k$-resultant modulus set, denoted by $Δ_k(E_1,E_2, \ldots, E_k)$, is defined by $$ Δ_k(E_1,E_2, \ldots, E_k)=\left\{\|{\bf x}^1+{\bf x}^2+\cdots+{\bf x}^k\|\in \mathbb F_q:{\bf x}^j\in E_j,\, j=1,2,\ldots, k\right\},$$ where $\|{\bf y}\|={\bf y}_1^2+ \cdots + {\bf y}_d^2$ for ${\bf y}=({\bf y}_1, \ldots, {\bf y}_d)\in \mathbb F_q^d.$ We prove that if $\prod\limits_{j=1}^3 |E_j| \ge C q^{3\left(\frac{d+1}{2} -\frac{1}{6d+2}\right)}$ for $d=4,6$ with a sufficiently large constant $C>0$, then $|Δ_3(E_1,E_2,E_3)|\ge cq$ for some constant $0<c\le 1,$ and if $\prod\limits_{j=1}^4 |E_j| \ge C q^{4\left(\frac{d+1}{2} -\frac{1}{6d+2}\right)}$ for even $d\ge 8,$ then $|Δ_4(E_1,E_2,E_3, E_4)|\ge cq.$ This generalizes the previous result in \cite{CKP16}. We also show that if $\prod\limits_{j=1}^3 |E_j| \ge C q^{3\left(\frac{d+1}{2} -\frac{1}{9d-18}\right)}$ for even $d\ge 8,$ then $|Δ_3(E_1,E_2,E_3)|\ge cq.$ This result improves the previous work in \cite{CKP16} by removing $\varepsilon>0$ from the exponent.

Rationality of the zeta function of the subgroups of abelian $p$-groups
Published in Pub. Math. Debrecen, vol 90, pp 91--105 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite abelian $p$-group $F$, we prove an efficient recursive formula for $σ_a(F)=\sum_{\substack{H\leq F}}|H|^a$ where $H$ ranges over the subgroups of $F$. We infer from this formula that the $p$-component of the corresponding zeta-function on groups of $p$-rank bounded by some constant $r$ is rational with a simple denominator. We also provide two explicit examples in rank $r=3$ and $r=4$ as well as a closed formula for $σ_a(F)$.

On automorphisms and fixing number of co-normal product of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An automorphism of a graph describes its structural symmetry and the concept of fixing number of a graph is used for breaking its symmetries (except the trivial one). In this paper, we evaluate automorphisms of the co-normal product graph $G_1\ast G_2$ of two simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ and give sharp bounds on the order of its automorphism group. We study the fixing number of $G_1\ast G_2$ and prove sharp bounds on it. Moreover, we compute the fixing number of the co-normal product of some families of graphs.
