Maximal entries of elements in certain matrix monoids
Published in Integers 20 (2020), Paper No. A31, 35 pp • Search Publication
Let $L_u=\begin{bmatrix}1 & 0\\u & 1\end{bmatrix}$ and $R_v=\begin{bmatrix}1 & v\\0 & 1\end{bmatrix}$ be matrices in $SL_2(\mathbb Z)$ with $u, v\geq 1$. Since the monoid generated by $L_u$ and $R_v$ is free, we can associate a depth to each element based on its product representation. In the cases where $u=v=2$ and $u=v=3$, Bromberg, Shpilrain, and Vdovina determined the depth $n$ matrices containing the maximal entry for each $n\geq 1$. By using ideas from our previous work on $(u,v)$-Calkin-Wilf trees, we extend their results for any $u, v\geq 1$ and in the process we recover the Fibonacci and some Lucas sequences. As a consequence we obtain bounds which guarantee collision resistance on a family of hashing functions based on $L_u$ and $R_v$.

On zeros of the characteristic polynomial of matroids of bounded tree-width
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 60:10-20. February 2017 • View Publication • BIB
We develop some basic tools to work with representable matroids of bounded tree-width and use them to prove that, for any prime power $q$ and constant $k$, the characteristic polynomial of any loopless, $GF(q)$-representable matroid with tree-width $k$ has no real zero greater than $q^{k-1}$.

Nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials and a refinement of Kostka-Foulkes polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the specialization of the type A nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$ based on the combinatorial formula of Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr. We prove that this specialization expands nonnegatively into the fundamental slide polynomials, introduced by the author and Searles. Using this and weak dual equivalence, we prove combinatorially that this specialization is a positive graded sum of Demazure characters. We use stability results for fundamental slide polynomials to show that this specialization stabilizes and to show that the Demazure character coefficients give a refinement of the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials.
An improved lower bound for Folkman's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Folkman's Theorem asserts that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a natural number $n = F(k)$ such that whenever the elements of $[n]$ are two-coloured, there exists a set $A \subset [n]$ of size $k$ with the property that all the sums of the form $\sum_{x \in B} x$, where $B$ is a nonempty subset of $A$, are contained in $[n]$ and have the same colour. In 1989, Erdős and Spencer showed that $F(k) \ge 2^{ck^2/ \log k}$, where $c >0$ is an absolute constant; here, we improve this bound significantly by showing that $F(k) \ge 2^{2^{k-1}/k}$ for all $k\in \mathbb{N}$.

Certifying coloring algorithms for graphs without long induced paths
Let $P_k$ be a path, $C_k$ a cycle on $k$ vertices, and $K_{k,k}$ a complete bipartite graph with $k$ vertices on each side of the bipartition. We prove that (1) for any integers $k, t>0$ and a graph $H$ there are finitely many subgraph minimal graphs with no induced $P_k$ and $K_{t,t}$ that are not $H$-colorable and (2) for any integer $k>4$ there are finitely many subgraph minimal graphs with no induced $P_k$ that are not $C_{k-2}$-colorable. The former generalizes the result of Hell and Huang [Complexity of coloring graphs without paths and cycles, Discrete Appl. Math. 216: 211--232 (2017)] and the latter extends a result of Bruce, Hoang, and Sawada [A certifying algorithm for 3-colorability of $P_5$-Free Graphs, ISAAC 2009: 594--604]. Both our results lead to polynomial-time certifying algorithms for the corresponding coloring problems.

Between Ish and Shi
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new family of hyperplane arrangements in dimension $n\geq3$ that includes both the Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement. We prove that all the members of a given subfamily have the same number of regions - the connected components of the complement of the union of the hyperplanes - which can be bijectively labeled with the Pak-Stanley labeling. In addition, we show that, in the cases of the Shi and the Ish arrangements, the number of labels with reverse centers of a given length is equal, and conjecture that the same happens with all of the members of the family.

A playful note on spanning and surplus edges
Consider a (not necessarily near-critical) random graph running in continuous time. A recent breadth-first-walk construction is extended in order to account for the surplus edge data in addition to the spanning edge data. Two different graph representations of the multiplicative coalescent, with different advantages and drawbacks, are discussed in detail. A canonical multi-graph of Bhamidi, Budhiraja and Wang (2014) naturally emerges. The presented framework should facilitate understanding of scaling limits with surplus edges for near-critical random graphs in the domain of attraction of general (not necessarily standard) eternal multiplicative coalescent.

Newton Polytopes in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 25 (2019), no. 5, Art. 66, 37 pp • View Publication • BIB
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. For any subset of [n] x [n], we describe it by linear inequalities. This generalized permutahedron conjecturally has positive Ehrhart polynomial. We conjecture it describes the Newton polytope of Schubert and key polynomials. We also define dominance order on permutations and study its poset-theoretic properties.

Weighted sheaves and homology of Artin groups
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 18 (2018) 3943-4000 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we expand the theory of weighted sheaves over posets, and use it to study the local homology of Artin groups. First, we use such theory to relate the homology of classical braid groups with the homology of certain independence complexes of graphs. Then, in the context of discrete Morse theory on weighted sheaves, we introduce a particular class of acyclic matchings. Explicit formulas for the homology of the corresponding Morse complexes are given, in terms of the ranks of the associated incidence matrices. We use such method to perform explicit computations for the new affine case $\tilde C_n$, as well as for the cases $A_n$, $B_n$ and $\tilde{A}_n$ (which were already done before by different methods).

The nil Temperley--Lieb algebra of type affine C
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, 223 (2019), 4966--4993 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a type affine $C$ analogue of the nil Temperley--Lieb algebra, in terms of generators and relations. We show that this algebra $T(n)$, which is a quotient of the positive part of a Kac--Moody algebra of type $D_{n+1}^{(2)}$, has an easily described faithful representation as an algebra of creation and annihilation operators on particle configurations, reminiscent of the open TASEP model in statistical physics. The centre of $T(n)$ consists of polynomials in a certain element $Q$, and $T(n)$ is a free module of finite rank over its centre. We show how to localize $T(n)$ by adjoining an inverse of $Q$, and prove that the resulting algebra is a full matrix ring over a ring of Laurent polynomials over a field. Although $T(n)$ has wild representation type, over an algebraically closed field we can classify all the finite dimensional indecomposable representations of $T(n)$ in which $Q$ acts invertibly.

A trace formula for the distribution of rational $G$-orbits in ramified covers, adapted to representation stability
A standard observation in algebraic geometry and number theory is that a ramified cover of an algebraic variety $\widetilde{X}\rightarrow X$ over a finite field $F_q$ furnishes the rational points $x\in X(F_q)$ with additional arithmetic structure: the Frobenius action on the fiber over $x$. For example, in the case of the Vieta cover of polynomials over $F_q$ this structure describes a polynomial's irreducible decomposition type. Furthermore, the distribution of these Frobenius actions is encoded in the cohomology of $\widetilde{X}$ via the Grothendieck-Lefschetz trace formula. This note presents a version of the trace formula that is suited for studying the distribution in the context of representation stability: for certain sequences of varieties $(\widetilde{X}_n)$ the cohomology, and therefore the distribution of the Frobenius actions, stabilizes in a precise sense. We conclude by fully working out the example of the Vieta cover of the variety of polynomials. The calculation includes the distribution of cycle decompositions on cosets of Young subgroups of the symmetric group, which might be of independent interest.

Wilf's conjecture and Macaulay's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let S $\subseteq$ N be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity m = min(S \ {0}), conductor c = max(N \ S) + 1 and minimally generated by e elements. Let L be the set of elements of S which are smaller than c. Wilf conjectured in 1978 that |L| is bounded below by c/e. We show here that if c $\le$ 3m, then S satisfies Wilf's conjecture. Combined with a recent result of Zhai, this implies that the conjecture is asymptotically true as the genus g(S) = |N \ S| goes to infinity. One main tool in this paper is a classical theorem of Macaulay on the growth of Hilbert functions of standard graded algebras.

The Constructions of directed strongly regular graph by algebraic method
The concept of directed strongly regular graphs (DSRG) was introduced by Duval in "A Directed Graph Version of Strongly Regular Graphs" [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 47(1988)71-100]. Duval also provided several construction methods for directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper, We construct several new classes of directed strongly regular graphs which are obtained by using Kronecker matrix product, Semidirect product and Cayley coset graph. At the same time, using group representation, for two special cases, we give some other sufficient and necessary conditions of Cayley graphs to be DSRG. At last, we finish this paper with a discussion of some propositions of in(out)-neighbours and automorphism group in directed strongly regular graphs.

The spectral radius of graphs with no $K_{2,t}$ minor
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $t\geq3$ and $G$ be a graph of order $n,$ with no $K_{2,t}$ minor. If $n>400t^{6}$, then the spectral radius $μ\left( G\right) $ satisfies \[ μ\left( G\right) \leq\frac{t-1}{2}+\sqrt{n+\frac{t^{2}-2t-3}{4}}, \] with equality if and only if $n\equiv1$ $(\operatorname{mod}$ $t)$ and $G=K_{1}\vee\left\lfloor n/t\right\rfloor K_{t}$. For $t=3$ the maximum $μ\left( G\right) $ is found exactly for any $n>40000$.

Distinguishing number and distinguishing index of strong product of two graphs
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex labeling (edge labeling) with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. The strong product $G\boxtimes H$ of two graphs $G$ and $H$ is the graph with vertex set $V (G)\times V (H)$ and edge set $\{\{(x_1, x_2), (y_1, y_2)\} | x_iy_i \in E(G_i) ~{\rm or}~ x_i = y_i ~{\rm for~ each}~ 1 \leq i \leq 2.\}$. In this paper we study the distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of strong product of two graphs. We prove that for every $k \geq 2$, the $k$-th strong power of a connected $S$-thin graph $G$ has distinguishing index equal 2.
Enumeration of $2$-level polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A (convex) polytope $P$ is said to be $2$-level if for every direction of hyperplanes which is facet-defining for $P$, the vertices of $P$ can be covered with two hyperplanes of that direction. The study of these polytopes is motivated by questions in combinatorial optimization and communication complexity, among others. In this paper, we present the first algorithm for enumerating all combinatorial types of $2$-level polytopes of a given dimension $d$, and provide complete experimental results for $d \leqslant 7$. Our approach is inductive: for each fixed $(d-1)$-dimensional $2$-level polytope $P_0$, we enumerate all $d$-dimensional $2$-level polytopes $P$ that have $P_0$ as a facet. This relies on the enumeration of the closed sets of a closure operator over a finite ground set. By varying the prescribed facet $P_0$, we obtain all $2$-level polytopes in dimension $d$.

Arithmetic properties of coefficients of power series expansion of $\prod_{n=0}^{\infty}\left(1-x^{2^{n}}\right)^{t}$ (with an Appendix by Andrzej Schinzel)
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F(x)=\prod_{n=0}^{\infty}(1-x^{2^{n}})$ be the generating function for the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence $((-1)^{s_{2}(n)})_{n\in\N}$. In this paper we initiate the study of the arithmetic properties of coefficients of the power series expansions of the function $$ F_{t}(x)=F(x)^{t}=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}f_{n}(t)x^{n}. $$ For $t\in\N_{+}$ the sequence $(f_{n}(t))_{n\in\N}$ is the Cauchy convolution of $t$ copies of the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence. For $t\in\Z_{<0}$ the $n$-th term of the sequence $(f_{n}(t))_{n\in\N}$ counts the number of representations of the number $n$ as a sum of powers of 2 where each summand can have one among $-t$ colors. Among other things, we present a characterization of the solutions of the equations $f_{n}(2^k)=0$, where $k\in\N$, and $f_{n}(3)=0$. Next, we present the exact value of the 2-adic valuation of the number $f_{n}(1-2^{m})$ - a result which generalizes the well known expression concerning the 2-adic valuation of the values of the binary partition function introduced by Euler and studied by Churchhouse and others.

Hilbert Bases and Lecture Hall Partitions
Published in Ramanujan J. 47 (2018), no. 3, 509-531 • View Publication • BIB
In the interest of finding the minimum additive generating set for the set of $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall partitions, we compute the Hilbert bases for the $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in certain cases. In particular, we compute the Hilbert bases for two well-studied families of sequences, namely the $1\mod k$ sequences and the $\ell$-sequences. Additionally, we provide a characterization of the Hilbert bases for $\boldsymbol{u}$-generated Gorenstein $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in low dimensions.

Zero-sum multisets mod p with an application to surface automorphisms
We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$
