When do Schubert polynomial products stabilize?
The "back-stabilization number" for products of Schubert polynomials is the distance the corresponding permutations must be shifted before the structure constants stabilize. We give an explicit formula for this number and thereby prove a conjecture of N. Li in a strengthened form. This leads to an additional result: a formula for the smallest $n$ such that a given Schubert product expands completely over $S_n$.
Our method is to explore back-stable fundamental slide polynomials and their products combinatorially, in the context of their associated words. We use three main tools: (i) an algebra consisting of "colored words", with a modified shuffle product, and which contains the rings of back (quasi)symmetric functions as subquotients; (ii) the combinatorics of increasing suffixes of reduced words; and (iii) the lift of differential operators to the space of colored words.

As part of a program to develop $K$-theoretic analogues of combinatorially important polynomials, Monical, Pechenik, and Searles (2021) proved two expansion formulas $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a = \sum_b Q_b^a(β)\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_b$ and $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a = \sum_b M_b^a(β)\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_b,$ where each of $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$, $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$, $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a$ and $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ is a family of polynomials that forms a basis for $\mathbb{Z}[x_1,\dots,x_n][β]$ indexed by weak compositions $a,$ and $Q_b^a(β)$ and $M_b^a(β)$ are monomials in $β$ for each pair $(a,b)$ of weak compositions. The polynomials $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$ are the Lascoux atoms, $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$ are the kaons, $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a$ are the quasiLascoux polynomials, and $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ are the glide polynomials; these are respectively the $K$-analogues of the Demazure atoms $\mathfrak{A}_a$, the fundamental particles $\mathfrak{P}_a$, the quasikey polynomials $\mathfrak{Q}_a$, and the fundamental slide polynomials $\mathfrak{F}_a$. Monical, Pechenik, and Searles conjectured that for any fixed $a,$ $\sum_b Q_b^a(-1), \sum_b M_b^a(-1) \in \{0,1\},$ where $b$ ranges over all weak compositions. We prove this conjecture using a sign-reversing involution.

Schubert polynomials are refined by the key polynomials of Lascoux-Schützenberger, which in turn are refined by the fundamental slide polynomials of Assaf-Searles. In this paper we determine which fundamental slide polynomial refinements of key polynomials, indexed by strong compositions, are multiplicity free. We also give a recursive algorithm to determine all terms in the fundamental slide polynomial refinement of a key polynomial indexed by a strong composition. From here, we apply our results to begin to classify which fundamental slide polynomial refinements, indexed by weak compositions, are multiplicity free. We completely resolve the cases when the weak composition has at most two nonzero parts or the sum has at most two nonzero terms.

Motivated by the study of Macdonald polynomials, J. Haglund and A. Wilson introduced a nonsymmetric polynomial analogue of the chromatic quasisymmetric function called the \emph{chromatic nonsymmetric polynomial} of a Dyck graph. We give a positive expansion for this polynomial in the basis of fundamental slide polynomials using recent work of Assaf-Bergeron on flagged $(P,ρ)$-partitions. We then derive the known expansion for the chromatic quasisymmetric function of Dyck graphs in terms of Gessel's fundamental basis by taking a backstable limit of our expansion.

We study the specialization of the type A nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$ based on the combinatorial formula of Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr. We prove that this specialization expands nonnegatively into the fundamental slide polynomials, introduced by the author and Searles. Using this and weak dual equivalence, we prove combinatorially that this specialization is a positive graded sum of Demazure characters. We use stability results for fundamental slide polynomials to show that this specialization stabilizes and to show that the Demazure character coefficients give a refinement of the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials.
Combinatorial models for Schubert polynomials
Schubert polynomials are a basis for the polynomial ring that represent Schubert classes for the flag manifold. In this paper, we introduce and develop several new combinatorial models for Schubert polynomials that relate them to other known bases including key polynomials and fundamental slide polynomials. We unify these and existing models by giving simple bijections between the combinatorial objects indexing each. In particular, we give a simple bijective proof that the balanced tableaux of Edelman and Greene enumerate reduced expressions and a direct combinatorial proof of Kohnert's algorithm for computing Schubert polynomials. Further, we generalize the insertion algorithm of Edelman and Greene to give a bijection between reduced expressions and pairs of tableaux of the same key diagram shape and use this to give a simple formula, directly in terms of reduced expressions, for the key polynomial expansion of a Schubert polynomial.

We investigate the longstanding problem of finding a combinatorial rule for the Schubert structure constants in the $K$-theory of flag varieties (in type $A$). The Grothendieck polynomials of A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger (1982) serve as polynomial representatives for $K$-theoretic Schubert classes; however no positive rule for their multiplication is known outside the Grassmannian case. We contribute a new basis for polynomials, give a positive combinatorial formula for the expansion of Grothendieck polynomials in these glide polynomials, and provide a positive combinatorial Littlewood-Richardson rule for expanding a product of Grothendieck polynomials in the glide basis. Our techniques easily extend to the $β$-Grothendieck polynomials of S. Fomin-A. Kirillov (1994), representing classes in connective $K$-theory, and we state our results in this more general context.
A specialization of the glide basis recovers the fundamental slide polynomials of S. Assaf-D. Searles (2016), which play an analogous role with respect to the Chow ring of flag varieties. Additionally, the stable limits of another specialization of glide polynomials are T. Lam-P. Pylyavskyy's (2007) basis of multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions, $K$-theoretic analogues of I. Gessel's (1984) fundamental quasisymmetric functions. Those glide polynomials that are themselves quasisymmetric are truncations of multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions and form a basis of quasisymmetric polynomials.

We introduce the quasi-key basis of the polynomial ring. We prove this basis contains the quasi-Schur polynomials of of Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg and that stable limits of quasi-key polynomials are quasi-Schur functions, thus giving a lifting of the quasi-Schur basis of quasisymmetric polynomials to the full polynomial ring. We introduce the combinatorial model of Kohnert tableaux, and use this model to prove that key polynomials expand positively in quasi-key polynomials which in turn expand positively in the fundamental slide polynomials introduced earlier by the authors. We give simple combinatorial formulas for these expansions in terms of Kohnert tableaux, lifting the parallel expansions of a Schur function into quasi-Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We further utilize Kohnert tableaux to find the precise point at which the fundamental slide expansion of a key polynomial stabilizes.

We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.
