Composability of Permutation Classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define the operation of composing two hereditary classes of permutations using the standard composition of permutations as functions and we explore properties and structure of permutation classes considering this operation. We mostly concern ourselves with the problem of whether permutation classes can be composed from their proper subclasses. We provide examples of classes which can be composed from two proper subclasses, classes which can be composed from three but not from two proper subclasses and classes which cannot be composed from any finite number of proper subclasses.
The strong convexity spectra of grids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D$ be a connected oriented graph. A set $S \subseteq V(D)$ is convex in $D$ if, for every pair of vertices $x, y \in S$, the vertex set of every $xy$-geodesic, ($xy$ shortest directed path) and every $yx$-geodesic in $D$ is contained in $S$. The convexity number, ${\rm con}(D)$, of a non-trivial oriented graph, $D$, is the maximum cardinality of a proper convex set of $D$. The strong convexity spectrum of the graph $G$, $S_{SC} (G)$, is the set $\{{ \rm con}(D) \colon\ D {\rm \ is \ a \ strong \ orientation \ of \ } G \}$. In this paper we prove that the problem of determining the convexity number of an oriented graph is $\mathcal{NP}$-complete, even for bipartite oriented graphs of arbitrary large girth, extending previous known results for graphs. We also determine $S_{SC} (P_n \Box P_m)$, for every pair of integers $n,m \ge 2$.

Rational Dyck Paths in the Non Relatively Prime Case
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 24, Issue 3 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
We study the relationship between rational slope Dyck paths and invariant subsets of $\mathbb Z,$ extending the work of the first two authors in the relatively prime case. We also find a bijection between $(dn,dm)$--Dyck paths and $d$-tuples of $(n,m)$-Dyck paths endowed with certain gluing data. These are the first steps towards understanding the relationship between rational slope Catalan combinatorics and the geometry of affine Springer fibers and knot invariants in the non relatively prime case.
Spectral Bounds for the Connectivity of Regular Graphs with Given Order
Published • View Publication • BIB
The second-largest eigenvalue and second-smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph are measures of its connectivity. These eigenvalues can be used to analyze the robustness, resilience, and synchronizability of networks, and are related to connectivity attributes such as the vertex- and edge-connectivity, isoperimetric number, and characteristic path length. In this paper, we present two upper bounds for the second-largest eigenvalues of regular graphs and multigraphs of a given order which guarantee a desired vertex- or edge-connectivity. The given bounds are in terms of the order and degree of the graphs, and hold with equality for infinite families of graphs. These results answer a question of Mohar.

A trinity of duality: non-separable planar maps, $β$-(1,0) trees and synchronized intervals
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 95 (2018) 1-30 • View Publication • BIB
The dual of a map is a fundamental construction on combinatorial maps, but many other combinatorial objects also possess their notion of duality. For instance, the Tamari lattice is isomorphic to its order dual, which induces an involution on the set of so-called "synchronized intervals" introduced by Préville-Ratelle and the present author. Another example is the class of $β$-(1,0) trees, which has a mysterious involution $h$ proposed by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrímsson (2009). These two classes of combinatorial objects are all in bijection with the class of non-separable planar maps, which is closed by map duality. In this article, we show that we can identify the notions of duality in these three classes of objects using previously known natural bijections, which leads to a bijective proof of a result from Kitaev and de Mier (2013). We also discuss how various statistics are transferred by duality and by the bijections we used.

On a conjecture by Chapuy about Voronoi cells in large maps
Published in J. Stat. Mech. (2017) 103401 • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper, Chapuy conjectured that, for any positive integer k, the law for the fractions of total area covered by the k Voronoi cells defined by k points picked uniformly at random in the Brownian map of any fixed genus is the same law as that of a uniform k-division of the unit interval. For k=2, i.e. with two points chosen uniformly at random, it means that the law for the ratio of the area of one of the two Voronoi cells by the total area of the map is uniform between 0 and 1. Here, by a direct computation of the desired law, we show that this latter conjecture for k=2 actually holds in the case of large planar (genus 0) quadrangulations as well as for large general planar maps (i.e. maps whose faces have arbitrary degrees). This corroborates Chapuy's conjecture in its simplest realizations.

Distant irregularity strength of graphs with bounded minimum degree
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 233 (2017) 159-165 • View Publication • BIB
Consider a graph $G=(V,E)$ without isolated edges and with maximum degree $Δ$. Given a colouring $c:E\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, the weighted degree of a vertex $v\in V$ is the sum of its incident colours, i.e., $\sum_{e\ni v}c(e)$. For any integer $r\geq 2$, the least $k$ admitting the existence of such $c$ attributing distinct weighted degrees to any two different vertices at distance at most $r$ in $G$ is called the $r$-distant irregularity strength of $G$ and denoted by $s_r(G)$. This graph invariant provides a natural link between the well known 1--2--3 Conjecture and irregularity strength of graphs. In this paper we apply the probabilistic method in order to prove an upper bound $s_r(G)\leq (4+o(1))Δ^{r-1}$ for graphs with minimum degree $δ\geq \ln^8Δ$, improving thus far best upper bound $s_r(G)\leq 6Δ^{r-1}$.

Cherednik operators and Ruijsenaars-Schneider model at infinity
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices (2019) 2266-2294 • View Publication • BIB
Heckman introduced $N$ operators on the space of polynomials in $N$ variables, such that these operators form a covariant set relative to permutations of the operators and variables, and such that Jack symmetric polynomials are eigenfunctions of the power sums of these operators. We introduce the analogues of these $N$ operators for Macdonald symmetric polynomials, by using Cherednik operators. The latter operators pairwise commute, and Macdonald polynomials are eigenfunctions of their power sums. We compute the limits of our operators at $N\to\infty$. These limits yield the same Lax operator for Macdonald symmetric functions as constructed in our previous work.

Constrained clustering via diagrams: A unified theory and its applications to electoral district design
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper develops a general framework for constrained clustering which is based on the close connection of geometric clustering and diagrams. Various new structural and algorithmic results are proved (and known results generalized and unified) which show that the approach is computationally efficient and flexible enough to pursue various conflicting demands. The strength of the model is also demonstrated practically on real-world instances of the electoral district design problem where municipalities of a state have to be grouped into districts of nearly equal population while obeying certain politically motivated requirements.

The $(p,q)$ property in families of $d$-intervals and $d$-trees
Given integers $p\ge q>1$, a family of sets satisfies the $(p,q)$ property if among any $p$ members of it some $q$ intersect. We prove that for any fixed integer constants $p\ge q>1$, a family of $d$-intervals satisfying the $(p,q)$ property can be pierced by $O(d^{\frac{q}{q-1}})$ points, with constants depending only on $p$ and $q$. This extends results of Tardos, Kaiser and Alon for the case $q=2$, and of Kaiser and Rabinovich for the case $p=q=\lceil log_2(d+2) \rceil$. We further show that similar bounds hold in families of subgraphs of a tree or a graph of bounded tree-width, each consisting of at most $d$ connected components, extending results of Alon for the case $q=2$. Finally, we prove an upper bound of $O(d^{\frac{1}{p-1}})$ on the fractional piercing number in families of $d$-intervals satisfying the $(p,p)$ property, and show that this bound is asymptotically sharp.

Enumeration of Seidel matrices
In this paper Seidel matrices are studied, and their spectrum and several related algebraic properties are determined for order $n\leq 13$. Based on this Seidel matrices with exactly three distinct eigenvalues of order $n\leq 23$ are classified. One consequence of the computational results is that the maximum number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^{12}$ with common angle $1/5$ is exactly $20$.

Maximizing the number of vertices of an N-clique cover of the edges of a graph on N vertices
All the work made so far on edge-covering a graph by cliques focus on finding the minimum number of cliques that cover the graph. On this paper, we fix the number of cliques that cover a graph by the same number of vertices that the graph has, and give an upper bound for the sum of the number of vertices of these cliques in the cases where this covering is possible.

DP-colorings of graphs with high chromatic number
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, v. 65 (2017), 122--129 • View Publication • BIB
DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring introduced recently by Dvořák and Postle. We prove that for every $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose chromatic number $χ(G)$ is "close" to $n$, the DP-chromatic number of $G$ equals $χ(G)$. "Close" here means $χ(G)\geq n-O(\sqrt{n})$, and we also show that this lower bound is best possible (up to the constant factor in front of $\sqrt{n}$), in contrast to the case of list coloring.

On Exchange Spectra of Valued Cluster Quivers and Cluster Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Inspirited by the importance of the spectral theory of graphs, we introduce the spectral theory of valued cluster quiver of a cluster algebra. Our aim is to characterize a cluster algebra via its spectrum so as to use the spectral theory as a tool. First, we give the relations between exchange spectrum of a valued cluster quiver and adjacency spectrum of its underlying valued graph, and between exchange spectra of a valued cluster quiver and its full valued subquivers. The key point is to find some invariants from the spectrum theory under mutations of cluster algebras, which is the second part we discuss. We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a cluster quiver and its mutation to be cospectral. Following this discussion, the so-called cospectral subalgebra of a cluster algebra is introduced. We study bounds of exchange spectrum radii of cluster quivers and give a characterization of $2$-maximal cluster quivers via the classification of oriented graphs of its mutation equivalence. Finally, as an application of this result, we obtain that the preprojective algebra of a cluster quiver of Dynkin type is representation-finite if and only if the cluster quiver is $2$-maximal.

Bispindles in strongly connected digraphs with large chromatic number
A $(k_1+k_2)$-bispindle is the union of $k_1$ $(x,y)$-dipaths and $k_2$ $(y,x)$-dipaths, all these dipaths being pairwise internally disjoint. Recently, Cohen et al. showed that for every $(1,1)$- bispindle $B$, there exists an integer $k$ such that every strongly connected digraph with chromatic number greater than $k$ contains a subdivision of $B$. We investigate generalisations of this result by first showing constructions of strongly connected digraphs with large chromatic number without any $(3,0)$-bispindle or $(2,2)$-bispindle. Then we show that strongly connected digraphs with large chromatic number contains a $(2,1)$-bispindle, where at least one of the $(x,y)$-dipaths and the $(y,x)$-dipath are long.
Equitable Colorings of $K\_4$-minor-free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We demonstrate that for every positive integer $Δ$, every K\_4-minor-free graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits an equitable coloring with k colors wherek $\ge$ ($Δ$+3)/2. This bound is tight and confirms a conjecture by Zhang and Whu. We do not use the discharging method but rather exploit decomposition trees of K 4-minor-free graphs.

Digraphs with small automorphism groups that are Cayley on two nonisomorphic groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ=\mathrm{Cay}(G,S)$ be a Cayley digraph on a group $G$ and let $A=\mathrm{Aut}(Γ)$. The Cayley index of $Γ$ is $|A:G|$. It has previously been shown that, if $p$ is a prime, $G$ is a cyclic $p$-group and $A$ contains a noncyclic regular subgroup, then the Cayley index of $Γ$ is superexponential in $p$. We present evidence suggesting that cyclic groups are exceptional in this respect. Specifically, we establish the contrasting result that, if $p$ is an odd prime and $G$ is abelian but not cyclic, and has order a power of $p$ at least $p^3$, then there is a Cayley digraph $Γ$ on $G$ whose Cayley index is just $p$, and whose automorphism group contains a nonabelian regular subgroup.

A logician's view of graph polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph polynomials are graph parameters invariant under graph isomorphisms which take values in a polynomial ring with a fixed finite number of indeterminates. We study graph polynomials from a model theoretic point of view. In this paper we distinguish between the graph theoretic (semantic) and the algebraic (syntactic) meaning of graph polynomials. We discuss how to represent and compare graph polynomials by their distinctive power. We introduce the class of graph polynomials definable using Second Order Logic which comprises virtually all examples of graph polynomials with a fixed finite set of indeterminates. Finally we show that the location of zeros and stability of graph polynomials is not a semantic property. The paper emphasizes a model theoretic view and gives a unified exposition of classical results in algebraic combinatorics together with new and some of our previously obtained results scattered in the graph theoretic literature.
Monotonicity of facet numbers of random convex hulls
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications 455, 1351-1364 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent random points that are distributed according to a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and let $P_n$ be the random convex hull generated by $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ ($n\geq d+1$). Natural classes of probability distributions are characterized for which, by means of Blaschke-Petkantschin formulae from integral geometry, one can show that the mean facet number of $P_n$ is strictly monotonically increasing in $n$.
