Non-Koszulness of operads and positivity of Poincaré series
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the operad of mock partially associative $n$-ary algebras is not Koszul, as conjectured by the second and the third author in 2009, and utilise the Zeilberger's algorithm for hypergeometric summation to demonstrate that non-Koszulness of that operad cannot be established by hunting for negative coefficients in the inverse of its Poincaré series.
Decomposing Cubic Graphs into Connected Subgraphs of Size Three
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S=\{K_{1,3},K_3,P_4\}$ be the set of connected graphs of size 3. We study the problem of partitioning the edge set of a graph $G$ into graphs taken from any non-empty $S'\subseteq S$. The problem is known to be NP-complete for any possible choice of $S'$ in general graphs. In this paper, we assume that the input graph is cubic, and study the computational complexity of the problem of partitioning its edge set for any choice of $S'$. We identify all polynomial and NP-complete problems in that setting, and give graph-theoretic characterisations of $S'$-decomposable cubic graphs in some cases.

Convex Polytopes for the Central Degeneration of the Affine Grassmannian
Published in Advances in Mathematics 348 (2019) 541-582 • View Publication • BIB
We study the algebraic geometry and combinatorics of the central degeneration (the degeneration that shows up in local models of Shimura varieties and Gaitsgory's central sheaves) in type A. More specifically, we elucidate the central degeneration of semi-infinite orbits and explain its relations with Levi restriction. Also, we discuss the central degeneration of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen cycles in the affine Grassmannian, and the corresponding transformations of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen polytopes. In addition, we shed some light on the geometry of Iwahori MV cycles in the affine Grassmannian and generalized MV cycles in the affine flag variety, which are closely related to Demazure modules and affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties respectively.

Fault-tolerance of balanced hypercubes with faulty vertices and faulty edges
Let $F_{v}$ (resp. $F_e$) be the set of faulty vertices (resp. faulty edges) in the $n$-dimensional balanced hypercube $BH_n$. Fault-tolerant Hamiltonian laceability in $BH_n$ with at most $2n-2$ faulty edges is obtained in [Inform. Sci. 300 (2015) 20--27]. The existence of edge-Hamiltonian cycles in $BH_n-F_e$ for $|F_e|\leq 2n-2$ are gotten in [Appl. Math. Comput. 244 (2014) 447--456]. Up to now, almost all results about fault-tolerance in $BH_n$ with only faulty vertices or only faulty edges. In this paper, we consider fault-tolerant cycle embedding of $BH_n$ with both faulty vertices and faulty edges, and prove that there exists a fault-free cycle of length $2^{2n}-2|F_v|$ in $BH_n$ with $|F_v|+|F_e|\leq 2n-2$ and $|F_v|\leq n-1$ for $n\geq 2$. Since $BH_n$ is a bipartite graph with two partite sets of equal size, the cycle of a length $2^{2n}-2|F_v|$ is the longest in the worst-case.

Some aspects of (r,k)-parking functions
Published in JCTA Volume 159, October 2018, Pages 54--78 • View Publication • BIB
An \emph{$(r,k)$-parking function} of length $n$ may be defined as a sequence $(a_1,\dots,a_n)$ of positive integers whose increasing rearrangement $b_1\leq\cdots\leq b_n$ satisfies $b_i\leq k+(i-1)r$. The case $r=k=1$ corresponds to ordinary parking functions. We develop numerous properties of $(r,k)$-parking functions. In particular, if $F_n^{(r,k)}$ denotes the Frobenius characteristic of the action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the set of all $(r,k)$-parking functions of length $n$, then we find a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the power series $\left( \sum_{n\geq 0}F_n^{(r,1)}t^n\right)^k$ for any $k\in \mathbb{Z}$. When $k>0$, this power series is just $\sum_{n\geq 0} F_n^{(r,k)} t^n$; when $k<0$, we obtain a dual to $(r,k)$-parking functions. We also give a $q$-analogue of this result. For fixed $r$, we can use the symmetric functions $F_n^{(r,1)}$ to define a multiplicative basis for the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. We investigate some of the properties of this basis.

A symmetry breaking transition in the edge/triangle network model
Published • View Publication • BIB
Our general subject is the emergence of phases, and phase transitions, in large networks subjected to a few variable constraints. Our main result is the analysis, in the model using edge and triangle subdensities for constraints, of a sharp transition between two phases with different symmetries, analogous to the transition between a fluid and a crystalline solid.
Smaller Extended Formulations for the Spanning Tree Polytope of Bounded-genus Graphs

We give an $O(g^{1/2} n^{3/2} + g^{3/2} n^{1/2})$-size extended formulation for the spanning tree polytope of an $n$-vertex graph embedded on a surface of genus $g$, improving on the known $O(n^2 + g n)$-size extended formulations following from Wong and Martin.

On some properties of three different types of triangular blocked tensors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define three types of upper (and lower) triangular blocked tensors, which are all generalizations of the triangular blocked matrices. We study some basic properties and characterizations of these three types of triangular blocked tensors. We obtain the formulas for the determinants, characteristic polynomials and spectra of the first and second type triangular blocked tensors, and give an example to show that these formulas no longer hold for the third type triangular blocked tensors. We prove that the product of any two $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensors of the first or second or third type is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensor of the same type. We also prove that, if an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the first or second or third type has a left $k$-inverse, then its unique left $k$-inverse is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type. Also if it has a right $k$-inverse, then all of its right $k$-inverses are still $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensors of the same type. By showing that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a weakly irreducible nonsingular $M$-tensor is a positive tensor, we show that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a first or second or third type canonical $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked nonsingular $M$-tensor is an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type all of whose diagonal blocks are positive tensors. We also show that every order $m$ dimension $n$ tensor is permutation similar to some third type normal upper triangular blocked tensor (all of whose diagonal blocks are irreducible). We give an example to show that this is not true for the first type canonical upper triangular blocked tensor.
Signed graphs with two negative edges
The presented paper studies the flow number $F(G,σ)$ of flow-admissible signed graphs $(G,σ)$ with two negative edges. We restrict our study to cubic graphs, because for each non-cubic signed graph $(G,σ)$ there is a set ${\cal G}(G,σ)$ of cubic graphs such that $F(G, σ) \leq \min \{F(H,σ_H) : (H,σ_H) \in {\cal G}(G)\}$. We prove that $F(G,σ) \leq 6$ if $(G,σ)$ contains a bridge and $F(G,σ) \leq 7$ in general. We prove better bounds, if there is an element $(H,σ_H)$ of ${\cal G}(G,σ)$ which satisfies some additional conditions. In particular, if $H$ is bipartite, then $F(G,σ) \leq 4$ and the bound is tight. If $H$ is 3-edge-colorable or critical or if it has a sufficient cyclic edge-connectivity, then $F(G,σ) \leq 6$. Furthermore, if Tutte's 5-Flow Conjecture is true, then $(G,σ)$ admits a nowhere-zero 6-flow endowed with some strong properties.

Breaking graph symmetries by edge colourings
Published • View Publication • BIB
The distinguishing index $D'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least number of colours needed in an edge colouring which is not preserved by any non-trivial automorphism. Broere and Pilśniak conjectured that if every non-trivial automorphism of a countable graph $G$ moves infinitely many edges, then $D'(G) \leq 2$. We prove this conjecture.

Operads of finite posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe four natural operad structures on the vector space generated by isomorphism classes of finite posets. The three last ones are set-theoretical and can be seen as a simplified version of the first, the same way the NAP operad behaves with respect to the pre-Lie operad. Moreover the two first ones are isomorphic.

Classifying (almost)-Belyi maps with Five Exceptional Points
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify all rational functions whose branching pattern above {0, 1, infinity} satisfy a certain regularity condition with precisely d=5 exceptions. This work is motivated by solving second order linear differential equations, with d=5 true singularities, in terms of hypergeometric functions. A similar problem was solved for d=4 by Vidunas and Filipuk.

Structures in supercritical scale-free percolation
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 27(4):2569-2604 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
Scale-free percolation is a percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ which can be used to model real-world networks. We prove bounds for the graph distance in the regime where vertices have infinite degrees. We fully characterize transience vs. recurrence for dimension 1 and 2 and give sufficient conditions for transience in dimension 3 and higher. Finally, we show the existence of a hierarchical structure for parameters where vertices have degrees with infinite variance and obtain bounds on the cluster density.

Faithful tropicalization of hypertoric varieties
The hypertoric variety $\mathfrak{M}_{\mathcal{A}}$ defined by an affine arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ admits a natural tropicalization, induced by its embedding in a Lawrence toric variety. We explicitly describe the polyhedral structure of this tropicalization. Using a recent result of Gubler, Rabinoff, and Werner, we prove that there is a continuous section of the tropicalization map.
Polyphase equiangular tight frames and abelian generalized quadrangles
Published • View Publication • BIB
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. ETFs arise in various applications, such as waveform design for wireless communication, compressed sensing, quantum information theory and algebraic coding theory. In a recent paper, signature matrices of ETFs were constructed from abelian distance regular covers of complete graphs. We extend this work, constructing ETF synthesis operators from abelian generalized quadrangles, and vice versa. This produces a new infinite family of complex ETFs as well as a new proof of the existence of certain generalized quadrangles. This work involves designing matrices whose entries are polynomials over a finite abelian group. As such, it is related to the concept of a polyphase matrix of a finite filter bank.
A Chevalley formula for the equivariant quantum K-theory of cominuscule varieties
We prove a type-uniform Chevalley formula for multiplication with divisor classes in the equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring of any cominuscule flag variety $G/P$. We also prove that multiplication with divisor classes determines the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of arbitrary flag varieties. These results prove a conjecture of Gorbounov and Korff concerning the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of Grassmannians of Lie type A.
Coprime and prime labelings of graphs
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 19 (2016), Article 16.5.8 • Search Publication
A coprime labeling of a simple graph of order $n$ is a labeling in which adjacent vertices are given relatively prime labels, and a graph is prime if the labels used can be taken to be the first $n$ positive integers. In this paper, we consider when ladder graphs are prime and when the corresponding labeling may be done in a cyclic manner around the vertices of the ladder. Furthermore, we discuss coprime labelings for complete bipartite graphs.

Complete mappings and Carlitz rank
The well-known Chowla and Zassenhaus conjecture, proven by Cohen in 1990, states that for any $d\ge 2$ and any prime $p>(d^2-3d+4)^2$ there is no complete mapping polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_{p}[x]$ of degree $d$. For arbitrary finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, we give a similar result in terms of the Carlitz rank of a permutation polynomial rather than its degree. We prove that if $n<\lfloor q/2\rfloor$, then there is no complete mapping in $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]$ of Carlitz rank $n$ of small linearity. We also determine how far permutation polynomials $f$ of Carlitz rank $n<\lfloor q/2\rfloor$ are from being complete, by studying value sets of $f+x.$ We provide examples of complete mappings if $n=\lfloor q/2\rfloor$, which shows that the above bound cannot be improved in general.

Counting SET-free sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the following counting problem related to the card game SET: How many $k$-element SET-free sets are there in an $n$-dimensional SET deck? Through a series of algebraic reformulations and reinterpretations, we show the answer to this question satisfies two polynomiality conditions.
Solvable Lie algebras and graphs
Published in J. Algebra 491 (2017), 474--489 • View Publication • BIB
We define a solvable extension of the graph 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras of [5] by adding elements corresponding to the 3-cliques of the graph. We study some of their basic properties and we prove that two such Lie algebras are isomorphic if and only if their graphs are isomorphic. We also briefly discuss some metric properties, providing examples of homogeneous spaces with nonpositive curvature operator and solvsolitons.
