On densities of lattice arrangements intersecting every i-dimensional affine subspace
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1978, Makai Jr. established a remarkable connection between the volume-product of a convex body, its maximal lattice packing density and the minimal density of a lattice arrangement of its polar body intersecting every affine hyperplane. Consequently, he formulated a conjecture that can be seen as a dual analog of Minkowski's fundamental theorem, and which is strongly linked to the well-known Mahler-conjecture. Based on the covering minima of Kannan & Lovász and a problem posed by Fejes Tóth, we arrange Makai Jr.'s conjecture into a wider context and investigate densities of lattice arrangements of convex bodies intersecting every i-dimensional affine subspace. Then it becomes natural also to formulate and study a dual analog to Minkowski's second fundamental theorem. As our main results, we derive meaningful asymptotic lower bounds for the densities of such arrangements, and furthermore, we solve the problems exactly for the special, yet important, class of unconditional convex bodies.

Bandwidth of graphs resulting from the edge clique covering problem
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25(4) (2018) P4.49 • View Publication • BIB
Let $n,k,b$ be integers with $1 \le k-1 \le b \le n$ and let $G_{n,k,b}$ be the graph whose vertices are the $k$-element subsets $X$ of $\{0,\dots,n\}$ with $\max(X)-\min(X) \le b$ and where two such vertices $X,Y$ are joined by an edge if $\max(X \cup Y) - \min(X \cup Y) \le b$. These graphs are generated by applying a transformation to maximal $k$-uniform hypergraphs of bandwidth $b$ that is used to reduce the (weak) edge clique covering problem to a vertex clique covering problem. The bandwidth of $G_{n,k,b}$ is thus the largest possible bandwidth of any transformed $k$-uniform hypergraph of bandwidth $b$. For $b\geq \frac{n+k-1}{2}$, the exact bandwidth of these graphs is determined. For $b<\frac{n+k-1}{2}$, the bandwidth is asymptotically determined in the case of $b=o(n)$ and in the case of $b$ growing linearly in $n$ with a factor $β\in (0,0.5]$, where for one case only bounds could be found. It is conjectured that the upper bound of this open case is the right asymptotic value.

The arithmetical rank of the edge ideals of cactus graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that, for the edge ideal of a cactus graph, the arithmetical rank is bounded above by the sum of the number of cycles and the maximum height of its associated primes. The bound is sharp, but in many cases it can be improved. Moreover, we show that the edge ideal of a Cohen-Macaulay graph that contains exactly one cycle or is chordal or has no cycles of length 4 and 5 is a set-theoretic complete intersection.

Minimising the number of triangular edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of minimising the number of edges that are contained in triangles, among $n$-vertex graphs with a given number of edges. We prove a conjecture of Füredi and Maleki that gives an exact formula for this minimum, for sufficiently large $n$.

The Attenuated Space Poset $\mathcal{A}_q(N, M)$
In this paper, we study the incidence algebra $T$ of the attenuated space poset $\mathcal{A}_q(N, M)$. We consider the following topics. We consider some generators of $T$: the raising matrix $R$, the lowering matrix $L$, and a certain diagonal matrix $K$. We describe some relations among $R, L, K$. We put these relations in an attractive form using a certain matrix $S$ in $T$. We characterize the center $Z(T)$. Using $Z(T)$, we relate $T$ to the quantum group $U_τ({\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ with $τ^2=q$. We consider two elements $A, A^*$ in $T$ of a certain form. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for $A, A^*$ to satisfy the tridiagonal relations. Let $W$ denote an irreducible $T$-module. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the above $A, A^*$ to act on $W$ as a Leonard pair.
The van der Waerden complex
Published in J. Number Theory, 172 (2017), 287--300 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the van der Waerden complex ${\rm vdW}(n,k)$ defined as the simplicial complex whose facets correspond to arithmetic progressions of length $k$ in the vertex set $\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$. We show the van der Waerden complex ${\rm vdW}(n,k)$ is homotopy equivalent to a $CW$-complex whose cells asymptotically have dimension at most $\log k / \log \log k$. Furthermore, we give bounds on $n$ and $k$ which imply that the van der Waerden complex is contractible.

Hypergraphs and hypermatrices with symmetric spectrum
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that a graph is bipartite if and only if the spectrum of its adjacency matrix is symmetric. In the present paper, this assertion is dissected into three separate matrix results of wider scope, which are extended also to hypermatrices. To this end the concept of bipartiteness is generalized by a new monotone property of cubical hypermatrices, called odd-colorable matrices. It is shown that a nonnegative symmetric $r$-matrix $A$ has a symmetric spectrum if and only if $r$ is even and $A$ is odd-colorable. This result also solves a problem of Pearson and Zhang about hypergraphs with symmetric spectrum and disproves a conjecture of Zhou, Sun, Wang, and Bu. Separately, similar results are obtained for the $H$-spectram of hypermatrices.

On distance sets, box-counting and Ahlfors-regular sets
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2017:9, 22 pp • View Publication • BIB
We obtain box-counting estimates for the pinned distance sets of (dense subsets of) planar discrete Ahlfors-regular sets of exponent $s>1$. As a corollary, we improve upon a recent result of Orponen, by showing that if $A$ is Ahlfors-regular of dimension $s>1$, then almost all pinned distance sets of $A$ have lower box-counting dimension $1$. We also show that if $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ have Hausdorff dimension $>1$ and $A$ is Ahlfors-regular, then the set of distances between $A$ and $B$ has modified lower box-counting dimension $1$, which taking $B=A$ improves Orponen's result in a different direction, by lowering packing dimension to modified lower box-counting dimension. The proofs involve ergodic-theoretic ideas, relying on the theory of CP-processes and projections.

Symmetric Unique Neighbor Expanders and Good LDPC Codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
An infinite family of bounded-degree 'unique-neighbor' expanders was constructed explicitly by Alon and Capalbo (2002). We present an infinite family F of bounded-degree unique-neighbor expanders with the additional property that every graph in the family F is a Cayley graph. This answers a question raised by Tali Kaufman. Using the same methods, we show that the symmetric LDPC codes constructed by Kaufman and Lubotzky (2012) are in fact symmetric under a simply transitive group action on coordinates.
Further results on degree based topological indices of certain chemical networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are various topological indices such as degree based topological indices, distance based topological indices and counting related topological indices etc. These topological indices correlate certain physicochemical properties such as boiling point, stability of chemical compounds. In this paper, we compute the sum-connectivity index and multiplicative Zagreb indices for certain networks of chemical importance like silicate networks, hexagonal networks, oxide networks, and honeycomb networks. Moreover, a comparative study using computer-based graphs has been made to clarify their nature for these families of networks.

Linear transformations and strong $q$-log-concavity for certain combinatorial triangle
It is well-known that the binomial transformation preserves the log-concavity property and log-convexity property. Let $\binom{a+n}{b+k}$ be the binomial coefficients and $\binom{n,k}{j}$ be defined by $(b_0+b_1x+\cdots+b_kx^{k})^n:=\sum_{j=0}^{kn}\binom{n,k}{j}x^j,$ where the sequence $(b_i)_{0\leq i\leq k}$ is log-concave. In this paper, we prove that the linear transformation $$y_n(q)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{a+n}{b+k}x_k(q)$$ preserves the strong $q$-log-concavity property for any fixed nonnegative integers $a$ and $b$, which strengthens and gives a simple proof of results of Ehrenborg and Steingrimsson, and Wang, respectively, on linear transformations preserving the log-concavity property. We also show that the linear transformation $$y_n=\sum_{i=0}^{kn}\binom{n,k}{j}x_i$$ not only preserves the log-concavity property, but also preserves the log-convexity property, which extends the results of Ahmia and Belbachir about the $s$-triangle transformation preserving the log-convexity property and log-concavity property. Let $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n, k\geq0}$ be an infinite lower triangular array of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence \begin{eqnarray*}\label{re} A_{n,k}(q)=f_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k+1}(q), \end{eqnarray*} for $n\geq 1$ and $k\geq 0$, where $A_{0,0}(q)=1$, $A_{0,k}(q)=A_{0,-1}(q)=0$ for $k>0$. We present criterions for the strong $q$-log-concavity of the sequences in each row of $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n, k\geq0}$. As applications, we get the strong $q$-log-concavity or the log-concavity of the sequences in each row of many well-known triangular arrays, such as the Bell polynomials triangle, the Eulerian polynomials triangle and the Narayana polynomials triangle in a unified approach.

Vertex Decomposition of Steiner Wiener Index and Steiner Betweenness Centrality
A formula based on a vertex contributions of the Steiner $k$-Wiener index is induced by a newly introduced $k$-Steiner betweenness centrality, which measures the number of $k$-Steiner trees that include a particular vertex as a non-terminal vertex. This generalizes Škrekovski and Gutman's Vertex version of the Wiener Theorem and a result of Gago on the average betweenness centrality and the average distance in general graphs.

Some remarks on the Balog-Wooley decomposition theorem and quantities D^+, D^\times
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the paper we study two characteristics D^+ (A), D^\times (A) of a set A which play important role in recent results concerning sum-product phenomenon. Also we obtain several variants and improvements of the Balog-Wooley decomposition theorem. In particular, we prove that any finite subset of real numbers can be split into two sets with small quantities D^+ and D^\times.

Lattice simplices of maximal dimension with a given degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
It was proved by Nill that for any lattice simplex of dimension $d$ with degree $s$ which is not a lattice pyramid, the inequality $d+1 \leq 4s-1$ holds. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of lattice simplices satisfying the equality, i.e., the lattice simplices of dimension $(4s-2)$ with degree $s$ which are not lattice pyramids. It turns out that such simplices arise from binary simplex codes. As an application of this characterization, we show that such simplices are counterexamples for the conjecture known as "Cayley conjecture". Moreover, by modifying Nill's inequaitly slightly, we also see the sharper bound $d+1 \leq f(2s)$, where $f(M)=\sum_{n=0}^{\lfloor \log_2 M \rfloor} \lfloor M/2^n \rfloor$ for $M \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. We also observe that any lattice simplex attaining this sharper bound always comes from a binary code.

Variation on a theme of Nathan Fine. New weighted partition identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We utilize false theta function results of Nathan Fine to discover three new partition identities involving weights. These relations connect Göllnitz--Gordon type partitions and partitions with distinct odd parts, partitions into distinct parts and ordinary partitions, and partitions with distinct odd parts where the smallest positive integer that is not a part of the partition is odd and ordinary partitions subject to some initial conditions, respectively. Some of our weights involve new partition statistics, one is defined as the number of different odd parts of a partition larger than or equal to a given value and another one is defined as the number of different even parts larger than the first integer that is not a part of the partition. Dedicated to our friend, Krishna Alladi, on his 60th birthday.

Graph Connectivity and Binomial Edge Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We relate homological properties of a binomial edge ideal $\mathcal{J}_G$ to invariants that measure the connectivity of a simple graph $G$. Specifically, we show if $R/\mathcal{J}_G$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, then graph toughness of $G$ is exactly $\frac{1}{2}$. We also give an inequality between the depth of $R/\mathcal{J}_G$ and the vertex-connectivity of $G$. In addition, we study the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity, and the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of $R/\mathcal{J}_G$.

We apply the discharging method to show that every simple bipartite planar graph on $n$ vertices contains an induced forest on at least $\lceil (4n+3)/7 \rceil$ vertices.

On the number of Singular Vector Tuples of Hyper-Cubical Tensors
Shmuel Friedland and Giorgio Ottaviani's beautiful constant term expression for the number of singular vector tuples of generic tensors is used to derive a rational generating function for these numbers, that in turn, is used to obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of such tuples for n by n by n three-dimensional tensors, and to conjecture an asymptotic formula for the general d-dimensional case. A donation of 100 dollars, in honor of the first prover, will be made to the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Counting the number of isosceles triangles in rectangular regular grids
Published in Final version in Forum Geometricorum, vol. 17, pp. 31-39, 2017 • Search Publication
In general graph theory, the only relationship between vertices are expressed via the edges. When the vertices are embedded in an Euclidean space, the geometric relationships between vertices and edges can be interesting objects of study. We look at the number of isosceles triangles where the vertices are points on a regular grid and show that they satisfy a recurrence relation when the grid is large enough. We also derive recurrence relations for the number of acute, obtuse and right isosceles triangles.

Five-term relation and Macdonald polynomials

The non-commutative five-term relation $T_{1,0} T_{0,1} = T_{0,1} T_{1,1} T_{1,0}$ is shown to hold for certain operators acting on symmetric functions. The "generalized recursion" conjecture of Bergeron and Haiman is a corollary of this result.
