This paper establishes connections between the structure of a semigroup and the minimum spans of distance labellings of its Cayley graphs. We show that certain general restrictions on the minimum spans are equivalent to the semigroup being combinatorial, and that other restrictions are equivalent to the semigroup being a right zero band. We obtain a description of the structure of all semigroups $S$ and their subsets $C$ such that $\Cay(S,C)$ is a disjoint union of complete graphs, and show that this description is also equivalent to several restrictions on the minimum span of $\Cay(S,C)$. We then describe all graphs with minimum spans satisfying the same restrictions, and give examples to show that a fairly straightforward upper bound for the minimum spans of the underlying undirected graphs of Cayley graphs turns out to be sharp even for the class of combinatorial semigroups.
Abelian regular coverings of the quaternion hypermap
A hypermap is an embedding of a connected hypergraph into an orientable closed surface. A covering between hypermaps is a homomorphism between the embedded hypergraphs which extends to an orientation-preserving covering of the supporting surfaces. A covering of a hypermap onto itself is an automorphism, and a hypermap is regular if its automorphism group acts transitively on the brins. Depending on the algebraic theory of regular hypermaps and hypermap operations, the abelian regular coverings over the quaternion hypermap are investigated. We define normalized multicyclic coverings between regular hypermaps, generalizing almost totally branched coverings studied in [K. Hu, R. Nedela, N.-E Wang, Branched cyclic regular coverings over platonic maps, European J. Combin. 36 (2014) 531--549]. It is shown that the covering transformation group of a normalized multicyclic covering is a nilpotent group with bounded class. As an application the abelian normalized bicyclic coverings over the quaternion hypemap are classified. In particular, those coverings which possess various level of external symmetry or fulfil certain smoothness conditions are explicitly determined.
The classification of tensor categories of two-colored noncrossing partitions

Our basic objects are partitions of finite sets of points into disjoint subsets. We investigate sets of partitions which are closed under taking tensor products, composition and involution, and which contain certain base partitions. These so called categories of partitions are exactly the tensor categories being used in the theory of Banica and Speicher's orthogonal easy quantum groups. In our approach, we additionally allow a coloring of the points. This serves as the basis for the introduction of unitary easy quantum groups, which is done in a separate article. The present article however is purely combinatorial. We find all categories of two-colored noncrossing partitions. For doing so, we extract certain parameters with values in the natural numbers specifying the colorization of the categories on a global as well as on a local level. It turns out that there are ten series of categories, each indexed by one or two parameters from the natural numbers, plus two additional categories. This is just the beginning of the classification of categories of two-colored partitions and we point out open problems at the end of the article.
Three-coloring triangle-free graphs on surfaces VI. 3-colorability of quadrangulations
We give a linear-time algorithm to decide 3-colorability (and find a 3-coloring, if it exists) of quadrangulations of a fixed surface. The algorithm also allows to prescribe the coloring for a bounded number of vertices.

Up to isomorphism and duality, there are exactly two non-degenerate abstract regular polytopes of rank greater than $n-3$, one of rank $n-1$ and one of rank $n-2$, with automorphism groups that are transitive permutation groups of degree $n\geq 7$. In this paper we extend this classification of high rank regular polytopes to include the ranks $n-3$ and $n-4$. The result is, up to a isomorphism and duality, seven abstract regular polytopes of rank $n-3$ for each $n\geq 9$, and nine abstract regular polytopes of rank $n-4$ for each $n \geq 11$. Moreover we show that if a transitive permutation group $Γ$ of degree $n \geq 11$ is the automorphism group of an abstract regular polytope of rank at least $n-4$, then $Γ\cong S_n$.
On the fully commutative elements of type $\tilde C$ and faithfulness of related towers

We define a tower of injections of $\tilde{C}$-type Coxeter groups $W(\tilde C_{n})$ for $n\geq 1$. We define a tower of Hecke algebras and we use the faithfulness at the Coxeter level to show that this last tower is a tower of injections. Let $W^c(\tilde C_{n})$ be the set of fully commutative elements in $W(\tilde C_{n})$, we classify the elements of $W^c(\tilde C_{n})$ and give a normal form for them. We use this normal form to define two injections from $W^c(\tilde C_{n-1})$ into $W^c(\tilde C_{n})$. We then define the tower of affine Temperley-Lieb algebras of type $\tilde{C }$ and use the injections above to prove the faithfulness of this tower.

We prove that the multiplicities of certain maximal weights of $\mathfrak{g}(A^{(1)}_{n})$-modules are counted by pattern avoidance on words. This proves and generalizes a conjecture of Misra-Rebecca. We also prove similar phenomena in types $A^{(2)}_{2n}$ and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$. Both proofs are applications of Kashiwara's crystal theory.
Incidences and pairs of dot products
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, let $P \subseteq \mathbb{F}^d$ be a finite set of points, and let $α,β\in \mathbb{F} \setminus \{0\}$. We study the quantity \[|Π_{α, β}| = \{(p,q,r) \in P \times P \times P \mid p \cdot q = α, p \cdot r = β\}.\]
We observe a connection between the question of placing an upper bound on $|Π_{α,β}|$ and a well-studied question on the number of incidences betwen points and hyperplanes, and use this connection to prove new and strengthened upper bounds on $|Π_{α,β}|$ in a variety of settings.
Tiling sets and spectral sets over finite fields

We study tiling and spectral sets in vector spaces over prime fields. The classical Fuglede conjecture in locally compact abelian groups says that a set is spectral if and only if it tiles by translation. This conjecture was disproved by T. Tao in Euclidean spaces of dimensions 5 and higher, using constructions over prime fields (in vector spaces over finite fields of prime order) and lifting them to the Euclidean setting. Over prime fields, when the dimension of the vector space is less than or equal to $2$ it has recently been proven that the Fuglede conjecture holds (see \cite{IMP15}). In this paper we study this question in higher dimensions over prime fields and provide some results and counterexamples. In particular we prove the existence of spectral sets which do not tile in $\mathbb{Z}_p^5$ for all odd primes $p$ and $\mathbb{Z}_p^4$ for all odd primes $p$ such that $p \equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$. Although counterexamples in low dimensional groups over cyclic rings $\mathbb{Z}_n$ were previously known they were usually for non prime $n$ or a small, sporadic set of primes $p$ rather than general constructions. This paper is a result of a Research Experience for Undergraduates program ran at the University of Rochester during the summer of 2015 by A. Iosevich, J. Pakianathan and G. Petridis.
The extremal function for disconnected minors
For a graph $H$ let $c(H)$ denote the supremum of $|E(G)|/|V(G)|$ taken over all non-null graphs $G$ not containing $H$ as a minor. We show that $$c(H) \leq \frac{|V(H)|+\mathrm{comp}(H)}{2}-1,$$ when $H$ is a union of cycles, verifying conjectures of Reed and Wood, and Harvey and Wood.
We derive the above result from a theorem which allows us to find two vertex disjoint subgraphs with prescribed densities in a sufficiently dense graph, which might be of independent interest.
On the distance spectra of graphs

The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.
Factorization of Temperley--Lieb diagrams

The Temperley--Lieb algebra is a finite dimensional associative algebra that arose in the context of statistical mechanics and occurs naturally as a quotient of the Hecke algebra arising from a Coxeter group of type $A$. It is often realized in terms of a certain diagram algebra, where every diagram can be written as a product of "simple diagrams." These factorizations correspond precisely to factorizations of the so-called fully commutative elements of the Coxeter group that index a particular basis. Given a reduced factorization of a fully commutative element, it is straightforward to construct the corresponding diagram. On the other hand, it is generally difficult to reconstruct the factorization given an arbitrary diagram. We present an efficient algorithm for obtaining a reduced factorization for a given diagram.

We construct a family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$, the parabolic quadric of $\textup{PG}(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. The existence of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$ was only known for $q=3, 7,$ or $11$. Our construction provides the first infinite family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$.Along the way, we also give a construction of $\frac{q+1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$.
Chromatic Ramsey number of acyclic hypergraphs
Suppose that $T$ is an acyclic $r$-uniform hypergraph, with $r\ge 2$. We define the ($t$-color) chromatic Ramsey number $χ(T,t)$ as the smallest $m$ with the following property: if the edges of any $m$-chromatic $r$-uniform hypergraph are colored with $t$ colors in any manner, there is a monochromatic copy of $T$. We observe that $χ(T,t)$ is well defined and $$\left\lceil {R^r(T,t)-1\over r-1}\right \rceil +1 \le χ(T,t)\le |E(T)|^t+1$$ where $R^r(T,t)$ is the $t$-color Ramsey number of $H$. We give linear upper bounds for $χ(T,t)$ when T is a matching or star, proving that for $r\ge 2, k\ge 1, t\ge 1$, $χ(M_k^r,t)\le (t-1)(k-1)+2k$ and $χ(S_k^r,t)\le t(k-1)+2$ where $M_k^r$ and $S_k^r$ are, respectively, the $r$-uniform matching and star with $k$ edges.
The general bounds are improved for $3$-uniform hypergraphs. We prove that $χ(M_k^3,2)=2k$, extending a special case of Alon-Frankl-Lovász' theorem. We also prove that $χ(S_2^3,t)\le t+1$, which is sharp for $t=2,3$. This is a corollary of a more general result. We define $H^{[1]}$ as the 1-intersection graph of $H$, whose vertices represent hyperedges and whose edges represent intersections of hyperedges in exactly one vertex. We prove that $χ(H)\le χ(H^{[1]})$ for any $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ (assuming $χ(H^{[1]})\ge 2$). The proof uses the list coloring version of Brooks' theorem.
The maximum number of perfect matchings of semi-regular graphs

Let $n\ge 34$ be an even integer, and $D_n=2\lceil n/4 \rceil-1$. In this paper, we prove that every $\{D_n,\,D_n+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings. This result is sharp in the sense that (i) there exists a $\{D_n,\,D_n+1\}$-graph containing exactly $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings, and that (ii) there exists a $\{D_n-1,\,D_n\}$-graph without perfect matchings for each $n$. As a consequence, for any integer $D\ge D_n$, every $\{D,\,D+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil (D+1)/2 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings. This extends Csaba et~al.'s breathe-taking result that every $D$-regular graph of sufficiently large order is $1$-factorizable, generalizes Zhang and Zhu's result that every $D_n$-regular graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings, and improves Hou's result that for all $k\ge n/2$, every $\{k,\,k+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $(\lfloor n/3\rfloor+1+k-n/2)$ disjoint perfect matchings.

Extremal Distances for Subtree Transfer Operations in Binary Trees

Three standard subtree transfer operations for binary trees, used in particular for phylogenetic trees, are: tree bisection and reconnection ($TBR$), subtree prune and regraft ($SPR$) and rooted subtree prune and regraft ($rSPR$). For a pair of leaf-labelled binary trees with $n$ leaves, the maximum number of such moves required to transform one into the other is $n-Θ(\sqrt{n})$, extending a result of Ding, Grunewald and Humphries. We show that if the pair is chosen uniformly at random, then the expected number of moves required to transfer one into the other is $n-Θ(n^{2/3})$. These results may be phrased in terms of agreement forests: we also give extensions for more than two binary trees.

A simple graph is $3$-rigid if its generic bar-joint frameworks in $R^3$ are infinitesimally rigid. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the minimal $3$-rigidity of a simple graph which is obtained from the $1$-skeleton of a triangulated torus by the deletion of edges interior to a triangulated disc.
