Numerical Adjunction Formulas for Weighted Projective Planes and Lattice Points Counting
Published in Kyoto J. Math. 56, no. 3 (2016), 575-598 • View Publication • BIB
This paper gives an explicit formula for the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of certain 2-dimensional polyhedra in terms of invariants of surface quotient singularities. Also, a formula for the dimension of the space of quasi-homogeneous polynomials of a given degree is derived. This admits an interpretation as a Numerical Adjunction Formula for singular curves on the weighted projective plane.

Semi-pointed partition posets and Species
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define semi-pointed partition posets, which are a generalisation of partition posets and show that they are Cohen-Macaulay. We then use multichains to compute the dimension and the character for the action of the symmetric groups on their homology. We finally study the associated incidence Hopf algebra, which is similar to the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra.
First passage percolation on random graphs with infinite variance degrees
We prove non-universality results for first-passage percolation on the configuration model with i.i.d. degrees having infinite variance. We focus on the weight of the optimal path between two uniform vertices. Depending on the properties of the weight distribution, we use an example-based approach and show that rather different behaviors are possible. When the weights are a.s. larger than a constant, the weight and number of edges in the graph grow proportionally to loglog(n), as for the graph distances. On the other hand, when the continuous-time branching process describing the first passage percolation exploration through the graph reaches infinitely many vertices in finite time, the weight converges to the sum of two i.i.d. random variables representing the explosion times of the processes started from the two sources. This non-universality is in sharp contrast to the setting where the degree sequence has a finite variance (see Bhamidi, Hofstad and Hooghiemstra arXiv: 1210.6839).

Some properties of even moments of uniform random walks
We build upon previous work on the densities of uniform random walks in higher dimensions, exploring some properties of the even moments of these densities and extending a result about their modularity.

Birthday Inequalities, Repulsion, and Hard Spheres
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a birthday inequality in random geometric graphs: the probability of the empty graph is upper bounded by the product of the probabilities that each edge is absent. We show the birthday inequality holds at low densities, but does not hold in general. We give three different applications of the birthday inequality in statistical physics and combinatorics: we prove lower bounds on the free energy of the hard sphere model and upper bounds on the number of independent sets and matchings of a given size in d-regular graphs. The birthday inequality is implied by a repulsion inequality: the expected volume of the union of spheres of radius r around n randomly placed centers increases if we condition on the event that the centers are at pairwise distance greater than r. Surprisingly we show that the repulsion inequality is not true in general, and in particular that it fails in 24-dimensional Euclidean space: conditioning on the pairwise repulsion of centers of 24-dimensional spheres can decrease the expected volume of their union.

Free probability aspect of irreducible meander systems, and some related observations about meanders
Published in Infinite Dimensional Analysis, Quantum Probability and Related Topics 19 (2016), Issue 02, article 16500119 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the concept of irreducible meandric system introduced by Lando and Zvonkin. We place this concept in the lattice framework of NC(n). As a consequence, we show that the even generating function for irreducible meandric systems is the R-transform of XY, where X and Y are classically (commuting) independent random variables, and each of X,Y has centred semicircular distribution of variance 1. Following this point of view, we make some observations about the symmetric linear functional on polynomials which has R-transform given by the even generating function for meanders.

Some Cohen-Macaulay and unmixed binomial edge ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay properties of the binomial edge ideal of some classes of graphs. We compute the depth of the binomial edge ideal of a generalized block graph. We also characterize all generalized block graphs whose binomial edge ideals are Cohen-Macaulay and unmixed. So that we generalize the results of Ene, Herzog and Hibi on block graphs. Moreover, we study unmixedness and Cohen-Macaulayness of the binomial edge ideal of some graph products such as the join and corona of two graphs with respect to the original graphs'.

Planar graphs have two-coloring number at most 8
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 130 (2018), 144-157 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the two-colouring number of any planar graph is at most 8. This resolves a question of Kierstead et al. [SIAM J. Discrete Math.~23 (2009), 1548--1560]. The result is optimal.

A binomial Laurent phenomenon algebra associated to the complete graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we find the exchange graph of the rank n binomial Laurent phenomenon algebra associated to the complete graph on n vertices. More specifically, we prove that this exchange graph is isomorphic to that of the rank n linear Laurent phenomenon algebra associated to the complete graph on n vertices discussed in arxiv.org/abs/1206.2612.

Mixing Rates of Random Walks with Little Backtracking
Many regular graphs admit a natural partition of their edge set into cliques of the same order such that each vertex is contained in the same number of cliques. In this paper, we study the mixing rate of certain random walks on such graphs and we generalize previous results of Alon, Benjamini, Lubetzky and Sodin regarding the mixing rates of non-backtracking random walks on regular graphs.

Algebraic Matroids and Set-theoretic Realizability of Tropical Varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
To each prime ideal in a polynomial ring over a field we associate an algebraic matroid and show that it is preserved under tropicalization. This gives a necessary condition for a tropical variety to be set-theoretically realizable from a prime ideal. We also show that there are infinitely many Bergman fans that are not set-theoretically realizable as the tropicalization of any ideal.

A Cellular Automaton for Blocking Queen Games
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the winning positions of a certain type of two-player game form interesting patterns which often defy analysis, yet can be computed by a cellular automaton. The game, known as {\em Blocking Wythoff Nim}, consists of moving a queen as in chess, but always towards (0,0), and it may not be moved to any of $k-1$ temporarily "blocked" positions specified on the previous turn by the other player. The game ends when a player wins by blocking all possible moves of the other player. The value of $k$ is a parameter that defines the game, and the pattern of winning positions can be very sensitive to $k$. As $k$ becomes large, parts of the pattern of winning positions converge to recurring chaotic patterns that are independent of $k$. The patterns for large $k$ display an unprecedented amount of self-organization at many scales, and here we attempt to describe the self-organized structure that appears.

Quadratic Gröbner bases arising from partially ordered sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$ and the chain polytope $\mathcal{C}(P)$ associated to a partially ordered set $P$ are studied. In this paper, we introduce the convex polytope $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ which is the convex hull of $\mathcal{O}(P) \cup (-\mathcal{C}(Q))$, where both $P$ and $Q$ are partially ordered sets with $|P|=|Q|=d$. It will be shown that $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ is a normal and Gorenstein Fano polytope by using the theory of reverse lexicographic squarefree initial ideals of toric ideals.

On the Curling Number of Certain Graphs
In this paper, we introduce the concept of curling subsequence of simple, finite and connected graphs. A curling subsequence is a maximal subsequence $C$ of the degree sequence of a simple connected graph $G$ for which the curling number $cn(G)$ corresponds to the curling number of the degree sequence per se and hence we call it the curling number of the graph $G$. A maximal degree subsequence with equal entries is called an identity subsequence. The number of identity curling subsequences in a simple connected graph $G$ is denoted $ic(G).$ We show that the curling number conjecture holds for the degree sequence of a simple connected graph $G$ on $n \geq 1$ vertices. We also introduce the notion of the compound curling number of a simple connected graph $G$ and then initiate a study on the curling number of certain standard graphs like Jaco graphs and set-graphs.

Intersecting $P$-free families
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 151, 2017, Pages 61-83, ISSN 0097-3165 • View Publication • BIB
We study the problem of determining the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family for a given partially ordered set (poset) $P$. In particular, we find the exact size of the largest intersecting $B$-free family where $B$ is the butterfly poset and classify the cases of equality. The proof uses a new generalization of the partition method of Griggs, Li and Lu. We also prove generalizations of two well-known inequalities of Bollobás and Greene, Katona and Kleitman in this case. Furthermore, we obtain a general bound on the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family, which is sharp for an infinite class of posets originally considered by Burcsi and Nagy, when $n$ is odd. Finally, we give a new proof of the bound on the maximum size of an intersecting $k$-Sperner family and determine the cases of equality.

Categorical Constructions and the Ramsey Property
It has become obvious in the recent development that the structural Ramsey property is a categorical property: it depends not only on the choice of objects, but also on the choice of morphisms involved. In this paper we explicitely put the Ramsey property and the dual Ramsey property in the context of categories of finite structures and investigate the invariance of these properties under some standard categorical constructions. We use elementary category theory to generalize some combinatorial results and using the machinery of very basic category theory provide new combinatorial statements (whose formulations do not refer to category-theoretic notions).
An algorithm computing combinatorial specifications of permutation classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
This article presents a methodology that automatically derives a combinatorial specification for a permutation class C, given its basis B of excluded patterns and the set of simple permutations in C, when these sets are both finite. This is achieved considering both pattern avoidance and pattern containment constraints in permutations. The obtained specification yields a system of equations satisfied by the generating function of C, this system being always positive and algebraic. It also yields a uniform random sampler of permutations in C. The method presented is fully algorithmic.

On equivariant quantum Schubert calculus for G/P
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show a Z^2-filtered algebraic structure and a "quantum to classical" principle on the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of a complete flag variety of general Lie type, generalizing earlier works of Leung and the second author. We also provide various applications on equivariant quantum Schubert calculus, including an equivariant quantum Pieri rule for any partial flag variety of Lie type A.

Nilprogressions and groups with moderate growth
Published in Adv. Math. 289 (2016), 1008-1055 • View Publication • BIB
We show that doubling at some large scale in a Cayley graph implies uniform doubling at all subsequent scales. The proof is based on the structure theorem for approximate subgroups proved by Green, Tao and the first author. We also give a number of applications to the geometry and spectrum of finite Cayley graphs. For example, we show that a finite group has moderate growth in the sense of Diaconis and Saloff-Coste if and only if its diameter is larger than a fixed power of the cardinality of the group. We call such groups almost flat and show that they have a subgroup of bounded index admitting a cyclic quotient of comparable diameter. We also give bounds on the Cheeger constant, first eigenvalue of the Laplacian, and mixing time. This can be seen as a finite-group version of Gromov's theorem on groups with polynomial growth. It also improves on a result of Lackenby regarding property (tau) in towers of coverings. Another consequence is a universal upper bound on the diameter of all finite simple groups, independent of the CFSG.
A Curved Brunn-Minkowski Inequality for the Symmetric Group
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 23 (2016), no. 1, P1.27 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we construct an injection $A \times B \rightarrow M \times M$ from the product of any two nonempty subsets of the symmetric group into the square of their midpoint set, where the metric is that corresponding to the conjugacy class of transpositions. If $A$ and $B$ are disjoint, our construction allows to inject two copies of $A \times B$ into $M \times M$. These injections imply a positively curved Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the symmetric group analogous to that obtained by Ollivier and Villani for the hypercube. However, while Ollivier and Villani's inequality is optimal, we believe that the curvature term in our inequality can be improved. We identify a hypothetical concentration inequality in the symmetric group and prove that it yields an optimally curved Brunn-Minkowski inequality.
