From Poset Topology to $q$-Eulerian Polynomials to Stanley's Chromatic Symmetric Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent years we have worked on a project involving poset topology, various analogues of Eulerian polynomials, and a refinement of Richard Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. Here we discuss how Stanley's ideas and results have influenced and inspired our own work.

Shellability, vertex decomposability, and lexicographical products of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate when the independence complex of $G[H]$, the lexicographical product of two graphs $G$ and $H$, is either vertex decomposable or shellable. As an application, we construct an infinite family of graphs with the property that every graph in this family has the property that the independence complex of each graph is shellable, but not vertex decomposable.

Expanders from Markov bases
Diaconis and Sturmfels introduced an influential method to construct Markov chains using commutative algebra. One major point of their method is that infinite families of graphs are simultaneously proved to be connected by a single algebraic calculation. For large state spaces in the infinite families these Markov chains are not rapidly mixing and only ad hoc methods have been available to improve their mixing times. We provide a method to get rapid mixing by constructing expanders for the Diaconis-Sturmfels type Markov chains.
Semirigid systems of three equivalence relations
A system $\mathcal M$ of equivalence relations on a set $E$ is \emph{semirigid} if only the identity and constant functions preserve all members of $\mathcal M$. We construct semirigid systems of three equivalence relations. Our construction leads to the examples given by Zádori in 1983 and to many others and also extends to some infinite cardinalities. As a consequence, we show that on every set of at most continuum cardinality distinct from $2$ and $4$ there exists a semirigid system of three equivalence relations.
The minimum bisection in the planted bisection model
Published in Proc. 9th RANDOM (2015) 710 - 725 • View Publication • BIB
In the planted bisection model a random graph $G(n,p_+,p_- )$ with $n$ vertices is created by partitioning the vertices randomly into two classes of equal size (up to $\pm1$). Any two vertices that belong to the same class are linked by an edge with probability $p_+$ and any two that belong to different classes with probability $p_- <p_+$ independently. The planted bisection model has been used extensively to benchmark graph partitioning algorithms. If $p_{\pm} =2d_{\pm} /n$ for numbers $0\leq d_- <d_+ $ that remain fixed as $n\to\infty$, then w.h.p. the ``planted'' bisection (the one used to construct the graph) will not be a minimum bisection. In this paper we derive an asymptotic formula for the minimum bisection width under the assumption that $d_+ -d_- >c\sqrt{d_+ \ln d_+ }$ for a certain constant $c>0$.

Rapid mixing and Markov bases
Published • View Publication • BIB
The mixing behaviour of random walks on lattice points of polytopes using Markov bases is examined. It is shown that under a dilation of the underlying polytope, these random walks do not mix rapidly when a fixed Markov basis is used. We also show that this phenomenon does not disappear after adding more moves to the Markov basis. Avoiding rejections by sampling applicable moves does also not lead to an asymptotic improvement. As a way out, a method of how to adapt Markov bases in order to achieve the fastest mixing behaviour is introduced.

On scattered convex geometries
Published • View Publication • BIB
A convex geometry is a closure space satisfying the anti-exchange axiom. For several types of algebraic convex geometries we describe when the collection of closed sets is order scattered, in terms of obstructions to the semilattice of compact elements. In particular, a semilattice $Ω(η)$, that does not appear among minimal obstructions to order-scattered algebraic modular lattices, plays a prominent role in convex geometries case. The connection to topological scatteredness is established in convex geometries of relatively convex sets.
Limits of Structures and the Example of Tree-Semilattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of left convergent sequences of graphs introduced by Lov\' asz et al. (in relation with homomorphism densities for fixed patterns and Szemerédi's regularity lemma) got increasingly studied over the past $10$ years. Recently, Ne\v set\v ril and Ossona de Mendez introduced a general framework for convergence of sequences of structures. In particular, the authors introduced the notion of $QF$-convergence, which is a natural generalization of left-convergence. In this paper, we initiate study of $QF$-convergence for structures with functional symbols by focusing on the particular case of tree semi-lattices. We fully characterize the limit objects and give an application to the study of left convergence of $m$-partite cographs, a generalization of cographs.

Burning graphs - a probabilistic perspective
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study a graph parameter that was recently introduced, the burning number, focusing on a few probabilistic aspects of the problem. The original burning number is revisited and analyzed for binomial random graphs G(n,p), random geometric graphs, and the Cartesian product of paths. Moreover, new variants of the burning number are introduced in which a burning sequence of vertices is selected according to some probabilistic rules. We analyze these new graph parameters for paths.
Full subgraphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of density $p$ on $n$ vertices. Following Erdős, Łuczak and Spencer, an $m$-vertex subgraph $H$ of $G$ is called {\em full} if $H$ has minimum degree at least $p(m - 1)$. Let $f(G)$ denote the order of a largest full subgraph of $G$. If $p\binom{n}{2}$ is a non-negative integer, define \[ f(n,p) = \min\{f(G) : \vert V(G)\vert = n, \ \vert E(G)\vert = p\binom{n}{2} \}.\] Erdős, Łuczak and Spencer proved that for $n \geq 2$, \[ (2n)^{\frac{1}{2}} - 2 \leq f(n, {\frac{1}{2}}) \leq 4n^{\frac{2}{3}}(\log n)^{\frac{1}{3}}.\] In this paper, we prove the following lower bound: for $n^{-\frac{2}{3}} <p_n <1-n^{-\frac{1}{7}}$, \[ f(n,p) \geq \frac{1}{4}(1-p)^{\frac{2}{3}}n^{\frac{2}{3}} -1.\] Furthermore we show that this is tight up to a multiplicative constant factor for infinitely many $p$ near the elements of $\{\frac{1}{2},\frac{2}{3},\frac{3}{4},\dots\}$. In contrast, we show that for any $n$-vertex graph $G$, either $G$ or $G^c$ contains a full subgraph on $Ω(\frac{n}{\log n})$ vertices. Finally, we discuss full subgraphs of random and pseudo-random graphs, and several open problems.

Generalized Riordan Groups and Operators on Polynomials
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 494 (2016) 286--308 • View Publication • BIB
We present an approach to generalized Riordan arrays which is based on operations in one large group of lower triangular matrices. This allows for direct proofs of many properties of weighted Sheffer sequences, and shows that all the groups arising from different weights are isomorphic since they are conjugate. We also prove a result about the intersection of two generalized Riordan with different weights.

Pairwise sums in colourings of the reals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose that we have a finite colouring of the reals. What sumset-type structures can we hope to find in some colour class? One of our aims is to show that there is such a colouring for which no uncountable set has all of its pairwise sums monochromatic. We also show that there is such a colouring such that there is no infinite set X with X+X (the pairwise sums from X, allowing repetition) monochromatic. These results assume CH. In the other direction, we show that if each colour class is measurable, or each colour class is Baire, then there is an infinite set X (and even an uncountable X, of size the reals) with X+X monochromatic. We also give versions for all of these results for k-wise sums in place of pairwise sums.

Orthogonal colorings of the sphere
Published in Mathematika 62 (2016) 492-501 • View Publication • BIB
An orthogonal coloring of the two-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, is a partition of $\mathbb{S}^2$ into parts such that no part contains a pair of orthogonal points, that is, a pair of points at spherical distance $π/2$ apart. It is a well-known result that an orthogonal coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ requires at least four parts, and orthogonal colorings with exactly four parts can easily be constructed from a regular octahedron centered at the origin. An intriguing question is whether or not every orthogonal 4-coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ is such an octahedral coloring. In this paper we address this question and show that if every color class has a non-empty interior, then the coloring is octahedral. Some related results are also given.
On the spectrum of sizes of semiovals contained in the Hermitian curve

Some constructions and bounds on the sizes of semiovals contained in the Hermitian curve are given. A construction of an infinite family of 2-blocking sets of the Hermitian curve is also presented.
Dominating induced matchings in graphs containing no long claw
Published • View Publication • BIB
An induced matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is dominating if every edge not in $M$ shares exactly one vertex with an edge in $M$. The dominating induced matching problem (also known as efficient edge domination) asks whether a graph $G$ contains a dominating induced matching. This problem is generally NP-complete, but polynomial-time solvable for graphs with some special properties. In particular, it is solvable in polynomial time for claw-free graphs. In the present paper, we study this problem for graphs containing no long claw, i.e. no induced subgraph obtained from the claw by subdividing each of its edges exactly once. To solve the problem in this class, we reduce it to the following question: given a graph $G$ and a subset of its vertices, does $G$ contain a matching saturating all vertices of the subset? We show that this question can be answered in polynomial time, thus providing a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the dominating induced matching problem for graphs containing no long claw.
An alternative proof for the constructive Asymmetric Lovász Local Lemma
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide an alternative constructive proof of the Asymmetric Lovász Local Lemma. Our proof uses the classic algorithmic framework of Moser and the analysis introduced by Giotis, Kirousis, Psaromiligkos, and Thilikos in "On the algorithmic Lovász Local Lemma and acyclic edge coloring", combined with the work of Bender and Richmond on the multivariable Lagrange Inversion formula.

Probabilistic existence results for separable codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Separable codes were defined by Cheng and Miao in 2011, motivated by applications to the identification of pirates in a multimedia setting. Combinatorially, $\overline{t}$-separable codes lie somewhere between $t$-frameproof and $(t-1)$-frameproof codes: all $t$-frameproof codes are $\overline{t}$-separable, and all $\overline{t}$-separable codes are $(t-1)$-frameproof. Results for frameproof codes show that (when $q$ is large) there are $q$-ary $\overline{t}$-separable codes of length $n$ with approximately $q^{\lceil n/t\rceil}$ codewords, and that no $q$-ary $\overline{t}$-separable codes of length $n$ can have more than approximately $q^{\lceil n/(t-1)\rceil}$ codewords. The paper provides improved probabilistic existence results for $\overline{t}$-separable codes when $t\geq 3$. More precisely, for all $t\geq 3$ and all $n\geq 3$, there exists a constant $κ$ (depending only on $t$ and $n$) such that there exists a $q$-ary $\overline{t}$-separable code of length $n$ with at least $κq^{n/(t-1)}$ codewords for all sufficiently large integers $q$. This shows, in particular, that the upper bound (derived from the bound on $(t-1)$-frameproof codes) on the number of codewords in a $\overline{t}$-separable code is realistic. The results above are more surprising after examining the situation when $t=2$. Results due to Gao and Ge show that a $q$-ary $\overline{2}$-separable code of length $n$ can contain at most $\frac{3}{2}q^{2\lceil n/3\rceil}-\frac{1}{2}q^{\lceil n/3\rceil}$ codewords, and that codes with at least $κq^{2n/3}$ codewords exist. So optimal $\overline{2}$-separable codes behave neither like $2$-frameproof nor $1$-frameproof codes. Also, the Gao--Ge bound is strengthened to show that a $q$-ary $\overline{2}$-separable code of length $n$ can have at most \[ q^{\lceil 2n/3\rceil}+\tfrac{1}{2}q^{\lfloor n/3\rfloor}(q^{\lfloor n/3\rfloor}-1) \] codewords.
The cycle index of the automorphism group of $\mathbb{Z}_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the group action of the automorphism group $\I_n=\aut(\Zz_n)$ on the set $\Zz_n$, that is the set of residue classes modulo $n$. Clearly, this group action provides a representation of $\I_n$ as a permutation group acting on $n$ points. One problem to be solved regarding this group action is to find its cycle index. Once it is found, there appears a vast class of related enumerative and computational problems with interesting applications. We provided the cycle index of specified group action in two ways. One of them is more abstract and hence compact, while another one is basically procedure of composing the cycle index from some \textit{building blocks}. However, those \textit{building blocks} are also well explained and finally presented in very detailed fashion.

Creating cycles in Walker-Breaker games
Published in Discrete Mathematics 339 (2016), 2113-2126 • View Publication • BIB
We consider biased $(1:b)$ Walker-Breaker games: Walker and Breaker alternately claim edges of the complete graph $K_n$, Walker taking one edge and Breaker claiming $b$ edges in each round, with the constraint that Walker needs to choose her edges according to a walk. As questioned in a paper by Espig, Frieze, Krivelevich and Pegden, we study how long a cycle Walker is able to create and for which biases $b$ Walker has a chance to create a cycle of given constant length.
Hereditarily rigid relations
An $h$-ary relation $\r$ on a finite set $A$ is said to be \emph{hereditarily rigid} if the unary partial functions on $A$ that preserve $\r$ are the subfunctions of the identity map or of constant maps. A family of relations ${\mathcal F}$ is said to be \emph{hereditarily strongly rigid} if the partial functions on $A$ that preserve every $\r \in {\mathcal F}$ are the subfunctions of projections or constant functions. In this paper we show that hereditarily rigid relations exist and we give a lower bound on their arities. We also prove that no finite hereditarily strongly rigid families of relations exist and we also construct an infinite hereditarily strongly rigid family of relations.
