A class of infinite convex geometries
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, v.23(1), paper #1.56 (2016) • View Publication • BIB
Various characterizations of finite convex geometries are well known. This note provides similar characterizations for possibly infinite convex geometries whose lattice of closed sets is strongly coatomic and lower continuous. Some classes of examples of such convex geometries are given.
Critical Pebbling Numbers of Graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Mathematics and Combinatorial Computing 99 (2016) 199--224 • Search Publication
We define three new pebbling parameters of a connected graph $G$, the $r$-, $g$-, and $u$-critical pebbling numbers. Together with the pebbling number, the optimal pebbling number, the number of vertices $n$ and the diameter $d$ of the graph, this yields 7 graph parameters. We determine the relationships between these parameters. We investigate properties of the $r$-critical pebbling number, and distinguish between greedy graphs, thrifty graphs, and graphs for which the $r$-critical pebbling number is $2^d$.

The Combinatorics of Associated Laguerre Polynomials
Published in SIGMA 11 (2015), 039, 12 pages • View Publication • BIB
The explicit double sum for the associated Laguerre polynomials is derived combinatorially. The moments are described using certain statistics on permutations and permutation tableaux. Another derivation of the double sum is provided using only the moment generating function.
Algebraic structures of MRD Codes
Published in Advances in Mathematics of Communications 10[3] (2016), 499-510 • View Publication • BIB
Based on results in finite geometry we prove the existence of MRD codes in (F_q)_(n,n) with minimum distance n which are essentially different from Gabidulin codes. The construction results from algebraic structures which are closely related to those of finite fields. Some of the results may be known to experts, but to our knowledge have never been pointed out explicitly in the literature.

On the geometry of real or complex supersolvable line arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a rank 3 real arrangement $\mathcal A$ of $n$ lines in the projective plane, the Dirac-Motzkin conjecture (proved by Green and Tao in 2013) states that for $n$ sufficiently large, the number of simple intersection points of $\mathcal A$ is greater than or equal to $n/2$. With a much simpler proof we show that if $\mathcal A$ is supersolvable, then the conjecture is true for any $n$ (a small improvement of original conjecture). The Slope problem (proved by Ungar in 1982) states that $n$ non-collinear points in the real plane determine at least $n-1$ slopes; we show that this is equivalent to providing a lower bound on the multiplicity of a modular point in any (real) supersolvable arrangement. In the second part we find connections between the number of simple points of a supersolvable line arrangement, over any field of characteristic 0, and the degree of the reduced Jacobian scheme of the arrangement. Over the complex numbers even though the Sylvester-Gallai theorem fails to be true, we conjecture that the supersolvable version of the Dirac-Motzkin conjecture is true.
On the Density of Transitive Tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for every fixed $k$, the number of occurrences of the transitive tournament $Tr_k$ of order $k$ in a tournament $T_n$ on $n$ vertices is asymptotically minimized when $T_n$ is random. In the opposite direction, we show that any sequence of tournaments $\{T_n\}$ achieving this minimum for any fixed $k\geq 4$ is necessarily quasi-random. We present several other characterizations of quasi-random tournaments nicely complementing previously known results and relatively easily following from our proof techniques.
Quenched Voronoi percolation
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the probability of crossing a large square in quenched Voronoi percolation converges to 1/2 at criticality, confirming a conjecture of Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm from 1999. The main new tools are a quenched version of the box-crossing property for Voronoi percolation at criticality, and an Efron-Stein type bound on the variance of the probability of the crossing event in terms of the sum of the squares of the influences. As a corollary of the proof, we moreover obtain that the quenched crossing event at criticality is almost surely noise sensitive.

A new near octagon and the Suzuki tower
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 23, Issue 2 (2016). Paper #P2.35 • View Publication • BIB
We construct and study a new near octagon of order $(2,10)$ which has its full automorphism group isomorphic to the group $\mathrm{G}_2(4){:}2$ and which contains $416$ copies of the Hall-Janko near octagon as full subgeometries. Using this near octagon and its substructures we give geometric constructions of the $\mathrm{G}_2(4)$-graph and the Suzuki graph, both of which are strongly regular graphs contained in the Suzuki tower. As a subgeometry of this octagon we have discovered another new near octagon, whose order is $(2,4)$.

Geometric Progression-Free Sequences with Small Gaps
Published in Journal of Number Theory 151 (2015): 197-210 • View Publication • BIB
Various authors, including McNew, Nathanson and O'Bryant, have recently studied the maximal asymptotic density of a geometric progression free sequence of positive integers. In this paper we prove the existence of geometric progression free sequences with small gaps, partially answering a question posed originally by Beiglböck et al. Using probabilistic methods we prove the existence of a sequence $T$ not containing any $6$-term geometric progressions such that for any $x\geq1$ and $\varepsilon>0$ the interval $[x,x+C_{\varepsilon}\exp((C+\varepsilon)\log x/\log\log x)]$ contains an element of $T$, where $C=\frac{5}{6}\log2$ and $C_{\varepsilon}>0$ is a constant depending on $\varepsilon$. As an intermediate result we prove a bound on sums of functions of the form $f(n)=\exp(-d_{k}(n))$ in very short intervals, where $d_{k}(n)$ is the number of positive $k$-th powers dividing $n$, using methods similar to those that Filaseta and Trifonov used to prove bounds on the gaps between $k$-th power free integers.

Tokuyama's Identity for Factorial Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
A recent paper of Bump, McNamara and Nakasuji introduced a factorial version of Tokuyama's identity, expressing the partition function of a six vertex model as the product of a t-deformed Vandermonde and a Schur function. Here we provide an extension of their result by exploiting the language of primed shifted tableaux, with its proof based on the use of non-intersecting lattice paths.

New bounds on the number of tests for disjunct matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $n$ items with at most $d$ of which being positive, instead of testing these items individually, the theory of combinatorial group testing aims to identify all positive items using as few tests as possible. This paper is devoted to a fundamental and thirty-year-old problem in the nonadaptive group testing theory. A binary matrix is called $d$-disjunct if the boolean sum of arbitrary $d$ columns does not contain another column not in this collection. Let $T(d)$ denote the minimal $t$ such that there exists a $t\times n$ $d$-disjunct matrix with $n>t$. $T(d)$ can also be viewed as the minimal $t$ such that there exists a nonadaptive group testing scheme which is better than the trivial one that tests each item individually. It was known that $T(d)\ge\binom{d+2}{2}$ and was conjectured that $T(d)\ge(d+1)^2$. In this paper we narrow the gap by proving $T(d)/d^2\ge(15+\sqrt{33})/24$, a quantity in [6/7,7/8].
On the competition graphs of $d$-partial orders
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the competition graphs of $d$-partial orders and obtain their characterization which extends results given by Cho and Kim \cite{chokim} in 2005. We also show that any graph can be made into the competition graph of a $d$-partial order for some positive integer $d$ as long as adding isolated vertices is allowed. We then introduce the notion of the partial order competition dimension of a graph and study graphs whose partial order competition dimensions are at most three.
A note on the Brush Numbers of Mycielski Graphs, $μ(G)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The concept of the brush number $b_r(G)$ was introduced for a simple connected undirected graph $G$. The concept will be applied to the Mycielskian graph $μ(G)$ of a simple connected graph $G$ to find $b_r(μ(G))$ in terms of an \emph{optimal orientation} of $G$. We prove a surprisingly simple general result for simple connected graphs on $n \geq 2$ vertices namely: $b_r(μ(G))= b_r(μ^{\rightarrow}(G)) = 2\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}d^+_{G^{\rightarrow}_{b_r(G)}}(v_i).$

Binary Fields on Limited Systems
Published in Acta Sci. Math. (Szeged) 80:3-4(2014), 409-418 • View Publication • BIB
The intrinsic structure of binary fields poses a challenging complexity problem from both hardware and software point of view. Motivated by applications to modern cryptography, we describe some simple techniques aimed at performing computations over binary fields using systems with limited resources. This is particularly important when such computations must be carried out by means of very small and simple machines. The algorithms described in the present paper provide an increased efficiency in computations, when compared to the previously known algorithms for the arithmetic over prime fields.

A metric graph satisfying $w^1_4=1$ that cannot be lifted to a curve satisfying $\dim (W^1_4)=1$
Published • View Publication • BIB
For all integers $g \geq 6$ we prove the existence of a metric graph $G$ with $w^1_4=1$ such that $G$ has Clifford index 2 and there is no tropical modification $G'$ of $G$ such that there exists a finite harmonic morphism of degree 2 from $G'$ to a metric graph of genus 1. Those examples show that dimension theorems on the space classifying special linear systems for curves do not all of them have immediate translation to the theory of divisors on metric graphs.

Polynomial representation for the expected length of minimal spanning trees
In this paper, we investigate the polynomial integrand of an integral formula that yields the expected length of the minimal spanning tree of a graph whose edges are uniformly distributed over the interval [0, 1]. In particular, we derive a general formula for the coefficients of the polynomial and apply it to express the first few coefficients in terms of the structure of the underlying graph; e.g. number of vertices, edges and cycles.

$14$-vertex graphs with cyclic automorphism group of order $8$
We describe computational results about undirected graphs having $14$ vertices and automorphism group isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$, graphs $Γ$ which have less than $2|Aut(Γ)|$ vertices. We give one example of such graphs.

The structure of graphs with Circular flow number 5 or more, and the complexity of their recognition problem
Published in Journal of Combinatorics 7(2) (2016), 453-479 • View Publication • BIB
For some time the Petersen graph has been the only known Snark with circular flow number $5$ (or more, as long as the assertion of Tutte's $5$-flow Conjecture is in doubt). Although infinitely many such snarks were presented eight years ago by Macajova and Raspaud, the variety of known methods to construct them and the structure of the obtained graphs were still rather limited. We start this article with an analysis of sets of flow values, which can be transferred through flow networks with the flow on each edge restricted to the open interval $(1,4)$ modulo $5$. All these sets are symmetric unions of open integer intervals in the ring $\mathbb{R}/5\mathbb{Z}$. We use the results to design an arsenal of methods for constructing snarks $S$ with circular flow number $φ_c(S)\ge 5$. As one indication to the diversity and density of the obtained family of graphs, we show that it is sufficiently rich so that the corresponding recognition problem is NP-complete.

Graph-truncations of $3$-polytopes
In this paper we study the operation of cutting off edges of a simple $3$-polytope $P$ along the graph $Γ$. We give the criterion when the resulting polytope is simple and when it is flag. As a corollary we prove the analog of Eberhard's theorem about the realization of polygon vectors of simple $3$-polytopes for flag polytopes.
