Discrete length-volume inequalities and lower volume bounds in metric spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
A theorem of W. Derrick ensures that the volume of any Riemannian cube $([0,1]^n,g)$ is bounded below by the product of the distances between opposite codimension-1 faces. In this paper, we establish a discrete analog of Derrick's inequality for weighted open covers of the cube $[0,1]^n$, which is motivated by a question about lower volume bounds in metric spaces. Our main theorem generalizes a previous result of the author, which gave a combinatorial version of Derrick's inequality and was used in the analysis of boundaries of hyperbolic groups. As an application, we answer a question of Y. Burago and V. Zalgaller about length-volume inequalities for pseudometrics on the unit cube.

Edge-decompositions of graphs with high minimum degree
Published in Adv. Math. 288 (2016), 337-385 • View Publication • BIB
A fundamental theorem of Wilson states that, for every graph $F$, every sufficiently large $F$-divisible clique has an $F$-decomposition. Here a graph $G$ is $F$-divisible if $e(F)$ divides $e(G)$ and the greatest common divisor of the degrees of $F$ divides the greatest common divisor of the degrees of $G$, and $G$ has an $F$-decomposition if the edges of $G$ can be covered by edge-disjoint copies of $F$. We extend this result to graphs $G$ which are allowed to be far from complete. In particular, together with a result of Dross, our results imply that every sufficiently large $K_3$-divisible graph of minimum degree at least $9n/10+o(n)$ has a $K_3$-decomposition. This significantly improves previous results towards the long-standing conjecture of Nash-Williams that every sufficiently large $K_3$-divisible graph with minimum degree at least $3n/4$ has a $K_3$-decomposition. We also obtain the asymptotically correct minimum degree thresholds of $2n/3 +o(n)$ for the existence of a $C_4$-decomposition, and of $n/2+o(n)$ for the existence of a $C_{2\ell}$-decomposition, where $\ell\ge 3$. Our main contribution is a general `iterative absorption' method which turns an approximate or fractional decomposition into an exact one. In particular, our results imply that in order to prove an asymptotic version of Nash-Williams' conjecture, it suffices to show that every $K_3$-divisible graph with minimum degree at least $3n/4+o(n)$ has an approximate $K_3$-decomposition,

Graph-theoretic perspective on a special class of Steiner Systems
We study $S(t-1,t,2t)$, which is a special class of Steiner systems. Explicit constructions for designing such systems are developed under a graph-theoretic platform where Steiner systems are represented in the form of uniform hypergraphs. The constructions devised are then used to study the $2$-coloring properties of these uniform hypergraphs.

The Super Patalan Numbers
Published in J. Integer Seq. 18 (2015), Article 15.3.3 • Search Publication
We introduce the super Patalan numbers, a generalization of the super Catalan numbers in the sense of Gessel, and prove a number of properties analagous to those of the super Catalan numbers. The super Patalan numbers generalize the super Catalan numbers similarly to how the Patalan numbers generalize the Catalan numbers.
Realization of groups with pairing as Jacobians of finite graphs
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, December 2018, Volume 22, Issue 4, pp 781-801 • View Publication • BIB
We study which groups with pairing can occur as the Jacobian of a finite graph. We provide explicit constructions of graphs whose Jacobian realizes a large fraction of odd groups with a given pairing. Conditional on the generalized Riemann hypothesis, these constructions yield all groups with pairing of odd order, and unconditionally, they yield all groups with pairing whose prime factors are sufficiently large. For groups with pairing of even order, we provide a partial answer to this question, for a certain restricted class of pairings. Finally, we explore which finite abelian groups occur as the Jacobian of a simple graph. There exist infinite families of finite abelian groups that do not occur as the Jacobians of simple graphs.
The game chromatic number of trees and forests
Published • View Publication • BIB
While the game chromatic number of a forest is known to be at most 4, no simple criteria are known for determining the game chromatic number of a forest. We first state necessary and sufficient conditions for forests with game chromatic number 2 and then investigate the differences between forests with game chromatic number 3 and 4. In doing so, we present a minimal example of a forest with game chromatic number 4, criteria for determining the game chromatic number of a forest without vertices of degree 3, and an example of a forest with maximum degree 3 and game chromatic number 4.

The asymptotic diameter of cyclohedra
Published in Israel J. Math. 219(2), 609-635 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
It is shown here that the diameter of the $d$-dimensional cyclohedron is not greater than $\lceil 5d/2\rceil-2$. It is also shown that the $5/2$ coefficient in this upper bound is asymptotically sharp. More precisely, the $d$-dimensional cyclohedron has diameter at least $5d/2-4\sqrt{d}-4$.

Ordered Ramsey numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a labeled graph $H$ with vertex set $\{1, 2,\ldots,n\}$, the ordered Ramsey number $r_<(H)$ is the minimum $N$ such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph on $\{1, 2, \ldots,N\}$ contains a copy of $H$ with vertices appearing in the same order as in $H$. The ordered Ramsey number of a labeled graph $H$ is at least the Ramsey number $r(H)$ and the two coincide for complete graphs. However, we prove that even for matchings there are labelings where the ordered Ramsey number is superpolynomial in the number of vertices. Among other results, we also prove a general upper bound on ordered Ramsey numbers which implies that there exists a constant $c$ such that $r_<(H) \leq r(H)^{c \log^2 n}$ for any labeled graph $H$ on vertex set $\{1,2, \dots, n\}$.

Multiparameter poly-Cauchy and poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Komastu introduced the concept of poly-Cauchy numbers and polynomials which generalize Cauchy numbers and polynomials. In this paper, we introduce new generaliza- tion of poly-Cauchy and poly-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. Also, we introduce new generalizations of Cauchy numbers and polynomials. Moreover, we derive some identities involving the new numbers and polynomials and some types of Stirling numbers. These gives generalization of some relations poly-Cauchy and poly-Bernoulli numbers and poly- nomials. Furthermore, we obtain some relations between the multiparameter poly-Cauchy numbers and polynomials and new multiparameter poly-Bernoulli numbers and polyno- mials.

An overpartition analogue of the $q$-binomial coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define an overpartition analogue of Gaussian polynomials (also known as $q$-binomial coefficients) as a generating function for the number of overpartitions fitting inside the $M \times N$ rectangle. We call these new polynomials over Gaussian polynomials or over $q$-binomial coefficients. We investigate basic properties and applications of over $q$-binomial coefficients. In particular, via the recurrences and combinatorial interpretations of over q-binomial coefficients, we prove a Rogers-Ramaujan type partition theorem.

On Directed Lattice Paths With Additional Vertical Steps
The paper is devoted to the study of lattice paths that consist of vertical steps $(0,-1)$ and non-vertical steps $(1,k)$ for some $k\in \mathbb Z$. Two special families of primary and free lattice paths with vertical steps are considered. It is shown that for any family of primary paths there are equinumerous families of proper weighted lattice paths that consist of only non-vertical steps. The relation between primary and free paths is established and some combinatorial and statistical properties are obtained. It is shown that the expected number of vertical steps in a primary path running from $(0,0)$ to $(n,-1)$ is equal to the number of free paths running from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$. Enumerative results with generating functions are given. Finally, a few examples of families of paths with vertical steps are presented and related to Łukasiewicz, Motzkin, Dyck and Delannoy paths.

Tropical Spectral Theory of Tensors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study tropical eigenpairs of tensors, a generalization of the tropical spectral theory of matrices. We show the existence and uniqueness of an eigenvalue. We associate to a tensor a directed hypergraph and define a new type of cycle on a hypergraph, which we call an H-cycle. The eigenvalue of a tensor turns out to be equal to the minimal normalized weighted length of H-cycles of the associated hypergraph. We show that the eigenvalue can be computed efficiently via a linear program. Finally, we suggest possible directions of research.

Characterizations of minimal graphs with equal edge connectivity and spanning tree packing number
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 30 (2014) 1453-1461 • Search Publication
With graphs considered as natural models for many network design problems, edge connectivity $κ'(G)$ and maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees $τ(G)$ of a graph $G$ have been used as measures for reliability and strength in communication networks modeled as graph $G$ (see \cite{Cunn85, Matula87}, among others). Mader \cite{Mader71} and Matula \cite{Matula72} introduced the maximum subgraph edge connectivity $\overline{κ'}(G)=\max \{κ'(H): H \mbox{ is a subgraph of } G \}$. Motivated by their applications in network design and by the established inequalities \[ \overline{κ'}(G)\ge κ'(G) \ge τ(G), \] we present the following in this paper: (i) For each integer $k>0$, a characterization for graphs $G$ with the property that $\overline{κ'}(G) \le k$ but for any edge $e$ not in $G$, $\overline{κ'}(G+e)\ge k+1$. (ii) For any integer $n > 0$, a characterization for graphs $G$ with $|V(G)| = n$ such that $κ'(G) = τ(G)$ with $|E(G)|$ minimized.

Counting mountain-valley assignments for flat folds
Published in Ars Combinatoria, Vol. 67 (2003), 175-188 • Search Publication
We develop a combinatorial model of paperfolding for the purposes of enumeration. A planar embedding of a graph is called a {\em crease pattern} if it represents the crease lines needed to fold a piece of paper into something. A {\em flat fold} is a crease pattern which lies flat when folded, i.e. can be pressed in a book without crumpling. Given a crease pattern $C=(V,E)$, a {\em mountain-valley (MV) assignment} is a function $f:E\rightarrow \{$M,V$\}$ which indicates which crease lines are convex and which are concave, respectively. A MV assignment is {\em valid} if it doesn't force the paper to self-intersect when folded. We examine the problem of counting the number of valid MV assignments for a given crease pattern. In particular we develop recursive functions that count the number of valid MV assignments for {\em flat vertex folds}, crease patterns with only one vertex in the interior of the paper. We also provide examples, especially those of Justin, that illustrate the difficulty of the general multivertex case.

Antipodes and involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
If H is a connected, graded Hopf algebra, then Takeuchi's formula can be used to compute its antipode. However, there is usually massive cancellation in the result. We show how sign-reversing involutions can sometimes be used to obtain cancellation-free formulas. We apply this idea to nine different examples. We rederive known formulas for the antipodes in the Hopf algebra of polynomials, the shuffle Hopf algebra, the Hopf algebra of quasisymmertic functions in both the monomial and fundamental bases, the Hopf algebra of multi-quasisymmetric functions in the fundamental basis, and the incidence Hopf algebra of graphs. We also find cancellation-free expressions for particular values of the antipode in the immaculate basis for the noncommutative symmetric functions as well as the Malvenuto-Reutenauer and Porier-Reutenauer Hopf algebras, some of which are the first of their kind. We include various conjectures and suggestions for future research.

Cylindric Young Tableaux and their Properties
Cylindric Young tableaux are combinatorial objects that first appeared in the 1990s. A natural extension of the classical notion of a Young tableau, they have since been used several times, most notably by Gessel and Krattenthaler and by Alexander Postnikov. Despite this, relatively little is known about cylindric Young tableaux. This paper is an investigation of the properties of this object. In this paper, we extend the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Correspondence, a well-known and very useful bijection concerning regular Young tableaux, to be a correspondence between pairs of cylindric tableaux. We use this correspondence to reach further results about cylindric tableaux. We then establish an interpretation of cylindric tableaux in terms of a game involving marble-passing. Next, we demonstrate a generic method to use results concerning cylindric tableaux in order to prove results about skew Young tableaux. We finish with a note on Knuth equivalence and its analog for cylindric tableaux.
Block Circulant Graphs and the Graphs of Critical Pairs of a Crown
In this paper, we provide a natural bijection between a special family of block circulant graphs and the graphs of critical pairs of the posets known as generalized crowns. In particular, every graph in this family of block circulant graphs we investigate has a generating block row that follows a symmetric growth pattern of the all ones matrix. The natural bijection provides an upper bound on the chromatic number for this infinite family of graphs.

The Best Mixing Time for Random Walks on Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize the extremal structures for mixing walks on trees that start from the most advantageous vertex. Let $G=(V,E)$ be a tree with stationary distribution $π$. For a vertex $v \in V$, let $H(v,π)$ denote the expected length of an optimal stopping rule from $v$ to $π$. The \emph{best mixing time} for $G$ is $\min_{v \in V} H(v,π)$. We show that among all trees with $|V|=n$, the best mixing time is minimized uniquely by the star. For even $n$, the best mixing time is maximized by the uniquely path. Surprising, for odd $n$, the best mixing time is maximized uniquely by a path of length $n-1$ with a single leaf adjacent to one central vertex.
