A Turán-type problem on distance two
A new turán-type problem on distances on graphs was introduced by Tyomkyn and Uzzell. In this paper, we focus on the case that the distance is two. We primely show that for any value of $n$, a graph on $n$ vertices without three vertices pairwise at distance $2$, if it has a vertex $v \in V(G)$, whose neighbours are covered by at most two cliques, then it has at most $(n^2 - 1)/4 + 1$ pairs of vertices at distance $2$. This partially answers a guess of Tyomkyn and Uzzell [Tyomkyn, M., Uzzell, A.J.: A new Turán-Type promble on distaces of graphs. Graphs Combin. {\bf 29}(6), 1927--1942 (2012)].

The Combinatorics of $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The nonelliptic $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs with $k$ "$+$"s on the top boundary and $3n-2k$ "$-$"s on the bottom boundary combinatorially model the space $\mathsf{Hom}_{\mathfrak{sl}_3}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes (3n-2k)}, \mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module maps on tensor powers of the natural $3$-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module $\mathsf{V}$, and they have connections with the combinatorics of Springer varieties. Petersen, Pylyavskyy, and Rhodes showed that the set of such $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs and the set of semistandard tableaux of shape $(3^n)$ and type $\{1^2,\dots,k^2,k+1,\dots, 3n-k\}$ have the same cardinalities. In this work, we use the $\sf{m}$-diagrams introduced by Tymoczko and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to construct an explicit bijection, different from the one given by Russell, between these two sets. In establishing our result, we show that the pair of standard tableaux constructed using the notion of path depth is the same as the pair constructed from applying the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to a $3\,2\,1$-avoiding permutation. We also obtain a bijection between such pairs of standard tableaux and Westbury's $\mathsf{A_2}$ flow diagrams.
Coincidences of a shifted hexagonal lattice and the hexagonal packing
Published in Acta Phys. Pol. A, 126 (2014) no. 2, 516-519 • View Publication • BIB
A geometric study of twin and grain boundaries in crystals and quasicrystals is achieved via coincidence site lattices (CSLs) and coincidence site modules (CSMs), respectively. Recently, coincidences of shifted lattices and multilattices (i.e. finite unions of shifted copies of a lattice) have been investigated. Here, we solve the coincidence problem for a shifted hexagonal lattice. This result allows us to analyze the coincidence isometries of the hexagonal packing by viewing the hexagonal packing as a multilattice.

The Cycle Spectrum of Claw-free Hamiltonian Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $G$ is a claw-free hamiltonian graph of order $n$ and maximum degree $Δ$ with $Δ\geq 24$, then $G$ has cycles of at least $\min\left\{ n,\left\lceil\frac{3}{2}Δ\right\rceil\right\}-2$ many different lengths.

Induced Matchings in Subcubic Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that a cubic graph with $m$ edges has an induced matching with at least $m/9$ edges. Our result generalizes a result for planar graphs due to Kang, Mnich, and Müller (Induced matchings in subcubic planar graphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 26 (2012) 1383-1411) and solves a conjecture of Henning and Rautenbach (Induced matchings in subcubic graphs without short cycles, to appear in Discrete Math.).

On the number of coverings of the sphere ramified over given points
We present the generating function for the numbers of isomorphism classes of coverings of the two-dimensional sphere by the genus $g$ compact oriented surface not ramified outside of a given set of $m+1$ points in the target, fixed ramification type over one point, and arbitrary ramification types over the remaining $m$ points. We present the genus expansion of this generating function and prove, that the generating function of coverings of genus $0$ satisfies some system of differential equations. We show that this generating function is a specialization of the function from paper \cite{GJ} and, therefore, satisfies the KP-hierarchy.

On the number of graphs without large cliques
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1976 Erdos, Kleitman and Rothschild determined the number of graphs without a clique of size $\ell$. In this note we extend their result to the case of forbidden cliques of increasing size. More precisely we prove that for $\ell_n \le \frac12(\log n)^{1/4}$ there are $$2^{(1-1/(\ell_n-1))n^2/2+o(n^2/\ell_n)}$$ $K_{\ell_n}$-free graphs of order $n$. Our proof is based on the recent hypergraph container theorems of Saxton, Thomason and Balogh, Morris, Samotij, in combination with a theorem of Lovasz and Simonovits.

On $a^n+bn$ modulo $m$
Let $a$ and $m>0$ be integers. We show that for any integer $b$ relatively prime to $m$, the set $\{a^n+bn:\ n=1,\ldots,m^2\}$ contains a complete system of residues modulo $m$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that any integer $n>1$ can be written as $k+m$ with $2^k+m$ prime, where $k$ and $m$ are positive integers.

A Note on the Inducibility of 4-vertex Graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics, September 2015, Volume 31, Issue 5, pp 1367-1380 • View Publication • BIB
There is much recent interest in understanding the density at which constant size graphs can appear in a very large graph. Specifically, the inducibility of a graph H is its extremal density, as an induced subgraph of G, where |G| -> infinity. Already for 4-vertex graphs many questions are still open. Thus, the inducibility of the 4-path was addressed in a construction of Exoo (1986), but remains unknown. Refuting a conjecture of Erdos, Thomason (1997) constructed graphs with a small density of both 4-cliques and 4-anticliques. In this note, we merge these two approaches and construct better graphs for both problems.

Fundamental groups of random clique complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study fundamental groups of clique complexes associated to random graphs. We establish thresholds for their cohomological and geometric dimension and torsion. We also show that in certain regime any aspherical subcomplex of a random clique complex satisfies the Whitehead conjecture, i.e. all irs subcomplexes are also aspherical.

Asymptotic normality of fringe subtrees and additive functionals in conditioned Galton--Watson trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider conditioned Galton-Watson trees and show asymptotic normality of additive functionals that are defined by toll functions that are not too large. This includes, as a special case, asymptotic normality of the number of fringe subtrees isomorphic to any given tree, and joint asymptotic normality for several such subtree counts. Another example is the number of protected nodes. The offspring distribution defining the random tree is assumed to have expectation 1 and finite variance; no further moment condition is assumed.

Forcing $k$-repetitions in degree sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the most basic results in graph theory states that every graph with at least two vertices has two vertices with the same degree. Since there are graphs without $3$ vertices of the same degree, it is natural to ask if for any fixed $k$, every graph $G$ is ``close'' to a graph $G'$ with $k$ vertices of the same degree. Our main result in this paper is that this is indeed the case. Specifically, we show that for any positive integer $k$, there is a constant $C=C(k)$, so that given any graph $G$, one can remove from $G$ at most $C$ vertices and thus obtain a new graph $G'$ that contains at least $\min\{k,|G|-C\}$ vertices of the same degree. Our main tool is a multidimensional zero-sum theorem for integer sequences, which we prove using an old geometric approach of Alon and Berman.
On the edge-reconstruction number of a tree
The edge-reconstruction number ern$(G)$ of a graph $G$ is equal to the minimum number of edge-deleted subgraphs $G-e$ of $G$ which are sufficient to determine $G$ up to isomorphsim. Building upon the work of Molina and using results from computer searches by Rivshin and more recent ones which we carried out, we show that, apart from three known exceptions, all bicentroidal trees have edge-reconstruction number equal to 2. We also exhibit the known trees having edge-reconstruction number equal to 3 and we conjecture that the three infinite families of unicentroidal trees which we have found to have edge-reconstruction number equal to 3 are the only ones.
A short note on exponential-time algorithms for hybridization number
In this short note we prove that, given two (not necessarily binary) rooted phylogenetic trees T_1, T_2 on the same set of taxa X, where |X|=n, the hybridization number of T_1 and T_2 can be computed in time O^{*}(2^n) i.e. O(2^{n} poly(n)). The result also means that a Maximum Acyclic Agreement Forest (MAAF) can be computed within the same time bound.

Permutation polynomials induced from permutations of subfields, and some complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares
We present a general technique for obtaining permutation polynomials over a finite field from permutations of a subfield. By applying this technique to the simplest classes of permutation polynomials on the subfield, we obtain several new families of permutation polynomials. Some of these have the additional property that both f(x) and f(x)+x induce permutations of the field, which has combinatorial consequences. We use some of our permutation polynomials to exhibit complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares. In addition, we solve the open problem from a recent paper by Wu and Lin, and we give simpler proofs of much more general versions of the results in two other recent papers.

Criticality of counterexamples to toroidal edge-hamiltonicity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known conjecture of Grünbaum and Nash-Williams proposes that 4-connected toroidal graphs are hamiltonian. The corresponding results for 4-connected planar and projective-planar graphs were proved by Tutte and by Thomas and Yu, respectively, using induction arguments that proved a stronger result, that every edge is on a hamilton cycle. However, this stronger property does not hold for 4-connected toroidal graphs: Thomassen constructed counterexamples. Thus, the standard inductive approach will not work for the torus. One possible way to modify it is by characterizing the situations where some edge is not on a hamilton cycle. We provide a contribution in this direction, by showing that the obvious generalizations of Thomassen's counterexamples are critical in a certain sense.

A Characterization of Mixed Unit Interval Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a complete characterization of mixed unit interval graphs, the intersection graphs of closed, open, and half-open unit intervals of the real line. This is a proper superclass of the well known unit interval graphs. Our result solves a problem posed by Dourado, Le, Protti, Rautenbach and Szwarcfiter (Mixed unit interval graphs, Discrete Math. 312, 3357-3363 (2012)).

Random Subgraphs in Sparse Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the threshold probability for connectivity of sparse graphs under weak assumptions. As a corollary this completely solve the problem for Cartesian powers of arbitrary graphs. In detail, let $G$ be a connected graph on $k$ vertices, $G^n$ the $n$-th Cartesian power of $G$, $α_i$ be the number of vertices of degree $i$ of $G$, $λ$ be a positive real number, and $G^n_p$ be the graph obtained from $G^n$ by deleting every edge independently with probability $1-p$. If $\sum_{i}α_i(1-p)^i=λ^{\frac{1}{n}}$, then $\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}\mathbb{P}[G^n_p {\rm\ is\ connected}]=\exp(-λ)$. This result extends known results for regular graphs. The main result implies that the threshold probability does not depend on the graph structure of $G$ itself, but only on the degree sequence of the graph.

Tropical Grassmannian and Tropical Linear Varieties from phylogenetic trees
In this paper we study tropicalization of Grassmannian and linear varieties. In particular, we study the tropical linear spaces cor- responding to the phylogenetic trees. We prove that corresponding to each subtree of the phylogenetic tree there is a point on the tropical grassmannian. We deduce a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be on the facet of the tropical linear space.
