On the number of Dedekind cuts and two-cardinal models of dependent theories
Published in J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 15 (2016) 771-784 • View Publication • BIB
For an infinite cardinal $κ$, let $dedκ$ denote the supremum of the number of Dedekind cuts in linear orders of size $κ$. It is known that $κ<dedκ\leq 2^κ$ for all $κ$ and that $dedκ<2^κ$ is consistent for any $κ$ of uncountable cofinality. We prove however that $2^κ\leq ded ( ded ( ded ( dedκ)))$ always holds. Using this result we calculate the Hanf numbers for the existence of two-cardinal models with arbitrarily large gaps and for the existence of arbitrarily large models omitting a type in the class of countable dependent first-order theories. Specifically, we show that these bounds are as large as in the class of all countable theories.

Nonlinearity measures of random Boolean functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The r-th order nonlinearity of a Boolean function is the minimum number of elements that have to be changed in its truth table to arrive at a Boolean function of degree at most r. It is shown that the (suitably normalised) r-th order nonlinearity of a random Boolean function converges strongly for all r\ge 1. This extends results by Rodier for r=1 and by Dib for r=2. The methods in the present paper are mostly of elementary combinatorial nature and also lead to simpler proofs in the cases that r=1 or 2.

Long cycles in random subgraphs of graphs with large minimum degree
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 45 (2014), no. 4, 762--765 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be any graph of minimum degree at least $k$, and let $G_p$ be the random subgraph of $G$ obtained by keeping each edge independently with probability $p$. Recently, Krivelevich, Lee and Sudakov showed that if $pk\to\infty$ then with probability tending to 1 $G_p$ contains a cycle of length at least $(1-o(1))k$. We give a much shorter proof of this result, also based on depth-first search.
Maximum Number of Minimum Dominating and Minimum Total Dominating Sets
Given a connected graph with domination (or total domination) number γ>=2, we ask for the maximum number m_γand m_{γ,T} of dominating and total dominating sets of size γ. An exact answer is provided for γ=2and lower bounds are given for γ>=3.

When does cp-rank equal rank?
The problem of finding completely positive matrices with equal cp-rank and rank is considered. We give some easy-to-check sufficient conditions on the entries of a doubly nonnegative matrix for it to be completely positive with equal cp-rank and rank. An algorithm is also presented to show its efficiency.
Bounds on the Maximum Number of Minimum Dominating Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use probabilistic methods to find lower bounds on the maximum number, in a graph with domination number γ, of dominating sets of size γ. We find that we can randomly generate a graph that, w.h.p., is dominated by almost all sets of size γ. At the same time, we use a modified adjacency matrix to obtain lower bounds on the number of sets of a given size that do not dominate a graph on n vertices

A new method for enumerating independent sets of a fixed size in general graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop a new method for enumerating independent sets of a fixed size in general graphs, and we use this method to show that a conjecture of Engbers and Galvin holds for all but finitely many graphs. We also use our method to prove special cases of a conjecture of Kahn. In addition, we show that our method is particularly useful for computing the number of independent sets of small sizes in general regular graphs and Moore graphs, and we argue that it can be used in many other cases when dealing with graphs that have numerous structural restrictions.
Isomorphisms between pattern classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Isomorphisms p between pattern classes A and B are considered. It is shown that, if p is not a symmetry of the entire set of permutations, then, to within symmetry, A is a subset of one a small set of pattern classes whose structure, including their enumeration, is determined.

On the $q$-log-convexity conjecture of Sun
In his study of Ramanujan-Sato type series for $1/π$, Sun introduced a sequence of polynomials $S_n(q)$ as given by $$S_n(q)=\sum\limits_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}{2k\choose k}{2(n-k)\choose n-k}q^k,$$ and he conjectured that the polynomials $S_n(q)$ are $q$-log-convex. By imitating a result of Liu and Wang on generating new $q$-log-convex sequences of polynomials from old ones, we obtain a sufficient condition for determining the $q$-log-convexity of self-reciprocal polynomials. Based on this criterion, we then give an affirmative answer to Sun's conjecture.

The $q$-log-convexity of Domb's polynomials
In this paper, we prove the $q$-log-convexity of Domb's polynomials, which was conjectured by Sun in the study of Ramanujan-Sato type series for powers of $π$. As a result, we obtain the log-convexity of Domb's numbers. Our proof is based on the $q$-log-convexity of Narayana polynomials of type $B$ and a criterion for determining $q$-log-convexity of self-reciprocal polynomials.

Discrete Extremal Length and Cube Tilings in Finite Dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Extremal length is a conformal invariant that transfers naturally to the discrete setting, giving square tilings as a natural combinatorial analog of conformal mappings. Recent work by S. Hersonsky has explored generalizing these ideas to three-dimensional cube tilings. The connections between discrete extremal length and cube tilings survive the dimension jump, but a condition called the triple intersection property is needed to generalize existence arguments. We show that this condition is too strong to realize a tiling, thus showing that discrete conformal mappings are far more limited in dimension three, mirroring the classical phenomenon. We also generalize results about discrete extremal length beyond dimension three and introduce some necessary conditions for cube tilings.

Vertex operators, Weyl determinant formulae and Littlewood duality
Published in Ann. Combin. 19 (2015), no.3, 427--442 • View Publication • BIB
Vertex operator realizations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions are studied and expanded. New proofs of determinant identities of irreducible characters for the symplectic and orthogonal groups are given. We also give a new proof of the duality between the universal orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions using vertex operators.

Functions without influential coalitions
We give counterexamples to a conjecture of Benny Chor and another of the second author, both from the late 80s, by exhibiting functions for which the influences of large coalitions are unexpectedly small relative to the expectations of the functions.
Independence densities of hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the number of independent sets in hypergraphs, which allows us to define the independence density of countable hypergraphs. Hypergraph independence densities include a broad family of densities over graphs and relational structures, such as $F$-free densities of graphs for a given graph $F.$ In the case of $k$-uniform hypergraphs, we prove that the independence density is always rational. In the case of finite but unbounded hyperedges, we show that the independence density can be any real number in $[0,1].$ Finally, we extend the notion of independence density via independence polynomials.
A note on bounds for the cop number using tree decompositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this short note, we supply a new upper bound on the cop number in terms of tree decompositions. Our results in some cases extend a previously derived bound on the cop number using treewidth.
On the minimum order of k-cop-win graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the minimum order graphs with a given cop number. We prove that the minimum order of a connected graph with cop number 3 is 10, and show that the Petersen graph is the unique isomorphism type of graph with this property. We provide the results of a computational search on the cop number of all graphs up to and including order 10. A relationship is presented between the minimum order of graph with cop number $k$ and Meyniel's conjecture on the asymptotic maximum value of the cop number of a connected graph.
The robber strikes back
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the new game of Cops and Attacking Robbers, which is identical to the usual Cops and Robbers game except that if the robber moves to a vertex containing a single cop, then that cop is removed from the game. We study the minimum number of cops needed to capture a robber on a graph $G$, written $cc(G)$. We give bounds on $cc(G)$ in terms of the cop number of $G$ in the classes of bipartite graphs and diameter two, $K_{1,m}$-free graphs.
A method for deterining the mod-$3^k$ behaviour of recursive sequences
We present a method for obtaining congruences modulo powers of 3 for sequences given by recurrences of finite depth with polynomial coefficients. We apply this method to Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, Riordan numbers, Schröder numbers, Eulerian numbers, trinomial coefficients, Delannoy numbers, and to functions counting free subgroups of finite index in the inhomogeneous modular group and its lifts. This leads to numerous new results, including many extensions of known results to higher powers of 3.

The Minimum Number of Hubs in Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, a hub refers to a non-terminal vertex of degree at least three. We study the minimum number of hubs needed in a network to guarantee certain flow demand constraints imposed between multiple pairs of sources and sinks. We prove that under the constraints, regardless of the size or the topology of the network, such minimum number is always upper bounded and we derive tight upper bounds for some special parameters. In particular, for two pairs of sources and sinks, we present a novel path-searching algorithm, the analysis of which is instrumental for the derivations of the tight upper bounds.

Geometric approach to string analysis: deviation from linearity and its use for biosequence classification
Published • View Publication • BIB
Tools that effectively analyze and compare sequences are of great importance in various areas of applied computational research, especially in the framework of molecular biology. In the present paper, we introduce simple geometric criteria based on the notion of string linearity and use them to compare DNA sequences of various organisms, as well as to distinguish them from random sequences. Our experiments reveal a significant difference between biosequences and random sequences - the former having much higher deviation from linearity than the latter - as well as a general trend of increasing deviation from linearity between primitive and biologically complex organisms.
