In this paper, we present some Hurwitz-Hodge integral identities which are derived from the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the orbifold Hurwitz numbers. As an application, we prove a conjecture on Hurwitz-Hodge integral proposed by J. Zhou in 2008.

Perfect colouring of isonemal fabrics by thin and thick striping of warp and weft with more than two colours is introduced. Conditions that prevent perfect colouring by striping are derived, and it is shown that avoiding them is sufficient to allow it. Examples of thick striping in all possible species are given.

This paper presents a new method for finding the node-disjoint paths with maximum combined bandwidth in communication networks. This problem is an NP-complete problem which can be optimally solved in exponential time using integer linear programming (ILP). The presented method uses a maximum-cost variant of Dijkstra algorithm and a virtual-node representation to obtain the maximum-bandwidth node-disjoint path. Through several simulations, we compare the performance of our method to a modern heuristic technique and to the ILP solution. We show that, in a polynomial execution time, our proposed method produces results that are almost identical to ILP in a significantly lower execution time.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity and $R^{+}$ be $Z^*(R)$ be the additive group and the set of all non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, respectively. We denote by $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ the Cayley graph $Cay(R^+,Z^*(R))$. In this paper, we study $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$. Among other results, it is shown that for every zero-dimensional non-local ring $R$, $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ is a connected graph of diameter 2. Moreover, for a finite ring $R$, we obtain the vertex connectivity and the edge connectivity of $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$. We investigate rings $R$ with perfect $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ as well. We also study $Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R))$ the induced subgraph on the regular elements of $R$. This graph gives a family of vertex transitive graphs. We show that if $R$ is a Noetherian ring and $Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R))$ has no infinite clique, then $R$ is finite. Furthermore, for every finite ring $R$, the clique number and the chromatic number of $Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R))$ are determined.

Let $t\ge 1$ be a given integer. Let ${\cal F}$ be a family of subsets of $[m]=\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$. Assume that for every pair of disjoint sets $S,T\subset [m]$ with $|S|=|T|=k$, there do not exist $2t$ sets in ${\cal F}$ where $t$ subsets of ${\cal F}$ contain $S$ and are disjoint from $T$ and $t$ subsets of ${\cal F}$ contain $T$ and are disjoint from $S$. We show that $|{\cal F}|$ is $O(m^{k})$.
Our main new ingredient is allowing, during the inductive proof, multisets of subsets of $[m]$ where the multiplicity of a given set is bounded by $t-1$. We use a strong stability result of Anstee and Keevash. This is further evidence for a conjecture of Anstee and Sali. These problems can be stated in the language of matrices Let $t\cdot M$ denote $t$ copies of the matrix $M$ concatenated together. We have established the conjecture for those configurations $t\cdot F$ for any $k\times 2$ (0,1)-matrix $F$.

The class of cographs is known to have unbounded linear clique-width. We prove that a hereditary class of cographs has bounded linear clique-width if and only if it does not contain all quasi-threshold graphs or their complements. The proof borrows ideas from the enumeration of permutation classes.

We investigate the asymptotic number of elements of size $n$ in a particular class of closed lambda-terms (so-called $BCI(p)$-terms) which are related to axiom systems of combinatory logic. By deriving a differential equation for the generating function of the counting sequence we obtain a recurrence relation which can be solved asymptotically. We derive differential equations for the generating functions of the counting sequences of other more general classes of terms as well: the class of $BCK(p)$-terms and that of closed lambda-terms. Using elementary arguments we obtain upper and lowerestimates for the number of closed lambda-terms of size $n$. Moreover, a recurrence relation is derived which allows an efficient computation of the counting sequence. $BCK(p)$-terms are discussed briefly.
Associative and commutative tree representations for Boolean functions

Since the 90's, several authors have studied a probability distribution on the set of Boolean functions on $n$ variables induced by some probability distributions on formulas built upon the connectors $And$ and $Or$ and the literals $\{x_{1}, \bar{x}_{1}, \dots, x_{n}, \bar{x}_{n}\}$. These formulas rely on plane binary labelled trees, known as Catalan trees. We extend all the results, in particular the relation between the probability and the complexity of a Boolean function, to other models of formulas: non-binary or non-plane labelled trees (i.e. Polya trees). This includes the natural tree class where associativity and commutativity of the connectors $And$ and $Or$ are realised.
Special polynomials related to the supersymmetric eight-vertex model. I. Behaviour at cusps
We study certain symmetric polynomials, which as very special cases include polynomials related to the supersymmetric eight-vertex model, and other elliptic lattice models with $Δ=\pm 1/2$. In this paper, which is the first part of a series, we study the behaviour of the polynomials at special parameter values, which can be identified with cusps of the modular group $Γ_0(12)$. In subsequent papers, we will show that the polynomials satisfy a non-stationary Schrödinger equation related to the Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov--Bernard equation and that they give a four-dimensional lattice of tau functions of Painlevé VI.
Mixing of the Glauber dynamics for the ferromagnetic Potts model

We present several results on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for sampling from the Gibbs distribution in the ferromagnetic Potts model. At a fixed temperature and interaction strength, we study the interplay between the maximum degree ($Δ$) of the underlying graph and the number of colours or spins ($q$) in determining whether the dynamics mixes rapidly or not. We find a lower bound $L$ on the number of colours such that Glauber dynamics is rapidly mixing if at least $L$ colours are used. We give a closely-matching upper bound $U$ on the number of colours such that with probability that tends to 1, the Glauber dynamics mixes slowly on random $Δ$-regular graphs when at most $U$ colours are used. We show that our bounds can be improved if we restrict attention to certain types of graphs of maximum degree $Δ$, e.g. toroidal grids for $Δ= 4$.

We introduce the notions of preordered and heap-preordered forests, generalizing the construction of ordered and heap-ordered forests. We prove that the algebras of preordered and heap-preordered forests are Hopf for the cut coproduct, and we construct a Hopf morphism to the Hopf algebra of packed words. Moreover, we define another coproduct on the preordered forests given by the contraction of edges. Finally, we give a combinatorial description of morphims defined on Hopf algebras of forests with values in the Hopf algebras of shuffes or quasi-shuffles.

An n\times n matrix M is called a fooling-set matrix of size n, if its diagonal entries are nonzero, whereas for every k\ne \ell we have M_{k,\ell} M_{\ell,k} = 0. Dietzfelbinger, Hromkovič, and Schnitger (1996) showed that n \le (\rk M)^2, regardless of over which field the rank is computed, and asked whether the exponent on \rk M can be improved.
We settle this question for nonzero characteristic by constructing a family of matrices for which the bound is asymptotically tight. The construction uses linear recurring sequences.
The metric dimension of strong product graphs

For an ordered subset $S = \{s_1, s_2,\dots s_k\}$ of vertices and a vertex $u$ in a connected graph $G$, the metric representation of $u$ with respect to $S$ is the ordered $k$-tuple $ r(u|S)=(d_G(v,s_1), d_G(v,s_2),\dots,$ $d_G(v,s_k))$, where $d_G(x,y)$ represents the distance between the vertices $x$ and $y$. The set $S$ is a metric generator for $G$ if every two different vertices of $G$ have distinct metric representations. A minimum metric generator is called a metric basis for $G$ and its cardinality, $dim(G)$, the metric dimension of $G$. It is well known that the problem of finding the metric dimension of a graph is NP-Hard. In this paper we obtain closed formulae and tight bounds for the metric dimension of strong product graphs.

To a crystallographic root system Φ, and a positive integer k, there are associated two Fuss-Catalan objects, the set of nonnesting partitions NN^(k)(Φ), and the cluster complex Δ^(k)(Φ). These posess a number of enumerative coincidences, many of which are captured in a surprising identity, first conjectured by Chapoton for k=1 and later generalized to k>1 by Armstrong. We prove this conjecture, obtaining some structural and enumerative results on NN^(k)(Φ) along the way, including an earlier conjecture by Fomin and Reading giving a refined enumeration by Fuß-Narayana numbers.

In [Ergodic Theory Dynam. System, 16 (1996) 663--682], S. Ferenczi proved that any minimal subshift with first difference of complexity bounded by 2 is $S$-adic with $\card S \leq 3^{27}$. In this paper, we improve this result by giving an $S$-adic charaterization of these subshifts with a set $S$ of 5 morphisms, solving by this way the $S$-adic conjecture for this particular case.
The maximal length of the period of a periodic word defined by restrictions
We determine the maximal length of the period of a periodic word defined by $n$ restrictions. It happens to be the corresponding Fibonacci number.
Central differences, Euler numbers and symbolic methods
I relate some coefficients encountered when computing the functional determinants on spheres to the central differentials of nothing. In doing this I use some historic works, in particular transcribing the elegant symbolic formalism of Jeffery (1861) into central difference form which has computational advantages for Euler numbers, as discovered by Shovelton (1915). I derive sum rules for these, and for the central differentials, the proof of which involves an interesting expression for powers of sech x as multiple derivatives. I present a more general, symbolic treatment of central difference calculus which allows known, and unknown, things to be obtained in an elegant and compact fashion gaining, at no cost, the expansion of the powers of the inverse sinh, a basic central function. Systematic use is made of the operator 2 asinh(D/2). Umbral calculus is employed to compress the operator formalism. For example the orthogonality/completeness of the factorial numbers, of the first and second kinds, translates, umbrally, to T(t(x))=x. The classic expansions of multiple angle cosh and sinh in terms of powers of sinh are thence obtained with minimal effort.

We examine several types of visibility graphs in which sightlines can pass through $k$ objects. For $k \geq 1$ we bound the maximum thickness of semi-bar $k$-visibility graphs between $\lceil \frac{2}{3} (k + 1) \rceil$ and $2k$. In addition we show that the maximum number of edges in arc and circle $k$-visibility graphs on $n$ vertices is at most $(k+1)(3n-k-2)$ for $n > 4k+4$ and ${n \choose 2}$ for $n \leq 4k+4$, while the maximum chromatic number is at most $6k+6$. In semi-arc $k$-visibility graphs on $n$ vertices, we show that the maximum number of edges is ${n \choose 2}$ for $n \leq 3k+3$ and at most $(k+1)(2n-\frac{k+2}{2})$ for $n > 3k+3$, while the maximum chromatic number is at most $4k+4$.

For infinitely many primes $p=4k+1$ we give a slightly improved upper bound for the maximal cardinality of a set $B\subset \ZZ_p$ such that the difference set $B-B$ contains only quadratic residues. Namely, instead of the "trivial" bound $|B|\leq \sqrt{p}$ we prove $|B|\leq \sqrt{p}-1$, under suitable conditions on $p$. The new bound is valid for approximately three quarters of the primes $p=4k+1$.
On Generalizing a Temporal Formalism for Game Theory to the Asymptotic Combinatorics of S5 Modal Frames
A temporal-theoretic formalism for understanding game theory is described where a strict ordering relation on a set of time points $T$ defines a game on $T$. Using this formalism, a proof of Zermelo's Theorem, which states that every finite 2-player zero-sum game is determined, is given and an exhaustive analysis of the game of Nim is presented. Furthermore, a combinatorial analysis of games on a set of arbitrary time points is given; in particular, it is proved that the number of distinct games on a set $T$ with cardinality $n$ is the number of partial orders on a set of $n$ elements. By generalizing this theorem from temporal modal frames to S5 modal frames, it is proved that the number of isomorphism classes of S5 modal frames $\mathcal{F} = \ < W, R \ >$ with $|W|=n$ is equal to the partition function $p(n)$. As a corollary of the fact that the partition function is asymptotic to the Hardy-Ramanujan number $$\frac{1}{4\sqrt{3}n}e^{π\sqrt{2n/3}}$$ the number of isomorphism classes of S5 modal frames $\mathcal{F} = \ < W, R \ >$ with $|W|=n$ is asymptotically the Hardy-Ramanujan number. Lastly, we use these results to prove that an arbitrary modal frame is an S5 modal frame with probability zero.
