On the diameter of total domination vertex critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider various types of domination vertex critical graphs, including total domination vertex critical graphs, independent domination vertex critical graphs and connected domination vertex critical graphs. We provide upper bounds on the diameter of them, two of which are sharp.
Generalized Balanced Tournament Packings and Optimal Equitable Symbol Weight Codes for Power Line Communications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalized balance tournament packings (GBTPs) extend the concept of generalized balanced tournament designs introduced by Lamken and Vanstone (1989). In this paper, we establish the connection between GBTPs and a class of codes called equitable symbol weight codes. The latter were recently demonstrated to optimize the performance against narrowband noise in a general coded modulation scheme for power line communications. By constructing classes of GBTPs, we establish infinite families of optimal equitable symbol weight codes with code lengths greater than alphabet size and whose narrowband noise error-correcting capability to code length ratios do not diminish to zero as the length grows.

Strong chromatic index of k-degenerate graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 330 (2014) 17--19 • View Publication • BIB
A {\em strong edge coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring in which every color class is an induced matching. The {\em strong chromatic index} $\chiup_{s}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors in a strong edge coloring of $G$. In this note, we improve a result by D{\k e}bski \etal [Strong chromatic index of sparse graphs, arXiv:1301.1992v1] and show that the strong chromatic index of a $k$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $(4k-2) \cdot Δ(G) - 2k^{2} + 1$. As a direct consequence, the strong chromatic index of a $2$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $6Δ(G) - 7$, which improves the upper bound $10Δ(G) - 10$ by Chang and Narayanan [Strong chromatic index of 2-degenerate graphs, J. Graph Theory 73 (2013) (2) 119--126]. For a special subclass of $2$-degenerate graphs, we obtain a better upper bound, namely if $G$ is a graph such that all of its $3^{+}$-vertices induce a forest, then $\chiup_{s}'(G) \leq 4 Δ(G) -3$; as a corollary, every minimally $2$-connected graph $G$ has strong chromatic index at most $4 Δ(G) - 3$. Moreover, all the results in this note are best possible in some sense.

Bochner formula and Bernstein type estimates on locally finite graphs
In this paper, we consider three typical problems on a locally finite connected graph. The first one is to study the Bochner formula for the Laplacian operator on a locally finite connected graph. We use the Bochner formula to derive the Bernstein type estimate of the heat equation. The second is to derive the Reilly type formula of the Laplacian operator. The last one is to obtain global positive solution to porous-media equation via the use of Aronson-Benilan argument. There is not much work in the direction of the study of nonlinear heat equations on locally finite connected graphs.

Amalgam width of matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new matroid width parameter based on the operation of matroid amalgamation, which we call amalgam-width. The parameter is linearly related to branch-width on finitely representable matroids (which is not possible for branch-width). In particular, any property expressible in the monadic second order logic can be decided in linear time for matroids with bounded amalgam-width. We also prove that the Tutte polynomial can be computed in polynomial time for matroids with bounded amalgam width.

Bijective counting of humps and peaks in $(k,a)$-paths
Recently, Mansour and Shattuck related the total number of humps in all of the $(k, a)$-paths of order $n$ to the number of super $(k, a)$-paths, which generalized previous results concerning the cases when $k = 1$ and $a = 1$ or $a = \infty$. They also derived a relation on the total number of peaks in all of the $(k, a)$-paths of order $n$ and the number of super $(k, a)$-paths, and asked for bijective proofs. In this paper, we will give bijective proofs of these two relations.

On the Structure of Boolean Functions with Small Spectral Norm
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove results regarding Boolean functions with small spectral norm (the spectral norm of f is $\|\hat{f}\|_1=\sum_α|\hat{f}(α)|$). Specifically, we prove the following results for functions $f:\{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ with $\|\hat{f}\|_1=A$. 1. There is a subspace $V$ of co-dimension at most $A^2$ such that $f|_V$ is constant. 2. f can be computed by a parity decision tree of size $2^{A^2}n^{2A}$. (a parity decision tree is a decision tree whose nodes are labeled with arbitrary linear functions.) 3. If in addition f has at most s nonzero Fourier coefficients, then f can be computed by a parity decision tree of depth $A^2 \log s$. 4. For every $0<ε$ there is a parity decision tree of depth $O(A^2 + \log(1/ε))$ and size $2^{O(A^2)} \cdot \min\{1/ε^2,O(\log(1/ε))^{2A}\}$ that ε-approximates f. Furthermore, this tree can be learned, with probability $1-δ$, using $\poly(n,\exp(A^2),1/ε,\log(1/δ))$ membership queries. All the results above also hold (with a slight change in parameters) to functions $f:Z_p^n\to \{0,1\}$.

Frameworks with forced symmetry I: Reflections and rotations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial characterization of generic frameworks that are minimally rigid under the additional constraint of maintaining symmetry with respect to a finite order rotation or a reflection. To establish these results we develop a new technique for deriving linear representations of sparsity matroids on colored graphs and extend the direction network method of proving rigidity characterizations to handle reflections.

Frameworks with forced symmetry II: Orientation-preserving crystallographic groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial characterization of minimally rigid planar frameworks with orientation-preserving crystallographic symmetry, under the constraint of forced symmetry. The main theorems are proved by extending the methods of the first paper in this sequence from groups generated by a single rotation to groups generated by translations and rotations. The proofs make use of a new family of matroids defined on crystallographic groups and associated submodular functions.

Convex and subharmonic functions on graphs
Published in Involve, a Journal of Mathematics 7-2 (2014), 227--237 • View Publication • BIB
We explore the relationship between convex and subharmonic functions on discrete sets. Our principal concern is to determine the setting in which a convex function is necessarily subharmonic. We initially consider the primary notions of convexity on graphs and show that more structure is needed to establish the desired result. To that end, we consider a notion of convexity defined on lattice-like graphs generated by normed abelian groups. For this class of graphs, we are able to prove that all convex functions are subharmonic.

Incidence coloring game and arboricity of graphs
Published in International Workshop on Combinatorial Algorithms, Rouen : France (2013) • View Publication • BIB
An incidence of a graph $G$ is a pair $(v,e)$ where $v$ is a vertex of $G$ and $e$ an edge incident to $v$. Two incidences $(v,e)$ and $(w,f)$ are adjacent whenever $v = w$, or $e = f$, or $vw = e$ or $f$. The incidence coloring game [S.D. Andres, The incidence game chromatic number, Discrete Appl. Math. 157 (2009), 1980-1987] is a variation of the ordinary coloring game where the two players, Alice and Bob, alternately color the incidences of a graph, using a given number of colors, in such a way that adjacent incidences get distinct colors. If the whole graph is colored then Alice wins the game otherwise Bob wins the game. The incidence game chromatic number $i_g(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors for which Alice has a winning strategy when playing the incidence coloring game on $G$. Andres proved that %$\lceil 3/2 Δ(G)\rceil \le $i_g(G) \le 2Δ(G) + 4k - 2$ for every $k$-degenerate graph $G$. %The arboricity $a(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of forests into which its set of edges can be partitioned. %If $G$ is $k$-degenerate, then $a(G) \le k \le 2a(G) - 1$. We show in this paper that $i_g(G) \le \lfloor\frac{3Δ(G) - a(G)}{2}\rfloor + 8a(G) - 2$ for every graph $G$, where $a(G)$ stands for the arboricity of $G$, thus improving the bound given by Andres since $a(G) \le k$ for every $k$-degenerate graph $G$. Since there exists graphs with $i_g(G) \ge \lceil\frac{3Δ(G)}{2}\rceil$, the multiplicative constant of our bound is best possible.

Veronese Varieties over Fields with non-zero Characteristic: A Survey
Published in Discrete Math., 267 (2003), 159-173 • View Publication • BIB
In the present survey we collect some recent results on nuclei of Veronese varieties and invariant subspaces of normal rational curves. We must assume, however, that the ground field is not "too small", since otherwise a Veronese variety is like dust: "few points" in some "high-dimensional" space.

On bijections that preserve complementarity of subspaces
Published in Discrete Math. 301 (2005), 46-56 • View Publication • BIB
The set $G$ of all $m$-dimensional subspaces of a $2m$-dimensional vector space $V$ is endowed with two relations, complementarity and adjacency. We consider bijections from $G$ onto $G'$, where $G'$ arises from a $2m'$-dimensional vector space $V'$. If such a bijection $φ$ and its inverse leave one of the relations from above invariant, then also the other. In case $m\geq 2$ this yields that $φ$ is induced by a semilinear bijection from $V$ or from the dual space of $V$ onto $V'$. As far as possible, we include also the infinite-dimensional case into our considerations.

The Total Irregularity of Graphs under Graph Operations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The total irregularity of a graph $G$ is defined as $\irr_t(G)=1/2 \sum_{u,v \in V(G)}$ $|d_G(u)-d_G(v)|$, where $d_G(u)$ denotes the degree of a vertex $u \in V(G)$. In this paper we give (sharp) upper bounds on the total irregularity of graphs under several graph operations including join, lexicographic product, Cartesian product, strong product, direct product, corona product, disjunction and symmetric difference.

Some Constructions of Divisible Designs from Laguerre Geometries
Published in Discrete Math. 301 (2005), 74-82 • View Publication • BIB
In the nineties, A.G. Spera introduced a construction principle for divisible designs. Using this method, we get series of divisible designs from finite Laguerre geometries. We show a close connection between some of these divisible designs and divisible designs whose construction was based on a conic in a plane of a 3-dimensional projective space.

On k-wise intersecting families of vertex sets in perfect matchings
We consider the following generalization of the seminal Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, due to Frankl. For k>= 2, let F be a k-wise intersecting family of r-subsets of an n element set X, i.e. any k sets in F have a nonempty intersection. If r<= (k-1/k)n, then |F|<={n-1 \choose r-1}. We extend Frankl's theorem in a graph-theoretic direction. For a graph G, and r>=1, let P^r(G) be the family of all r-subsets of the vertex set of G such that every r-subset is either an independent set or contains a maximum independent set. We will consider k-wise intersecting subfamilies of this family for the graph M_n, where M_n is the perfect matching on 2n vertices, and prove an analog of Frankl's theorem. This result can also be considered as an extension of a theorem of Bollobás and Leader for intersecting families of independent vertex sets in M_n.

Spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs. We give two general criteria under which such results may be deduced from `strong stability' forms of the corresponding (pure) extremal results. These results hold for the α-spectral radius defined using the α-norm for any α>1; the usual spectrum is the case α=2. Our results imply that any hypergraph Turán problem which has the stability property and whose extremal construction satisfies some rather mild continuity assumptions admits a corresponding spectral result. A particular example is to determine the maximum α-spectral radius of any 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices not containing the Fano plane, when n is sufficiently large. Another is to determine the maximum α-spectral radius of any graph on n vertices not containing some fixed colour-critical graph, when n is sufficiently large; this generalizes a theorem of Nikiforov who proved stronger results in the case α=2. We also obtain an α-spectral version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem on t-intersecting k-uniform hypergraphs.
Combinatorial Proof of the Inversion Formula on the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $W$ be a Coxeter group, and for $u,v\in W$, let $R_{u,v}(q)$ be the Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomial indexed by $u$ and $v$. In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof of the inversion formula on $R$-polynomials due to Kazhdan and Lusztig. This problem was raised by Brenti. Based on Dyer's combinatorial interpretation of the $R$-polynomials in terms of increasing Bruhat paths, we reformulate the inversion formula in terms of $V$-paths. By a $V$-path from $u$ to $v$ with bottom $w$ we mean a pair $(Δ_1,Δ_2)$ of Bruhat paths such that $Δ_1$ is a decreasing path from $u$ to $w$ and $Δ_2$ is an increasing path from $w$ to $v$. We find a reflection principle on $V$-paths, which leads to a combinatorial proof of the inversion formula. Moreover, we give two applications of the reflection principle. First, we restrict this involution to $V$-paths from $u$ to $v$ with maximal length. This provides a direct interpretation for the equi-distribution property that any nontrivial interval $[u,v]$ has as many elements of even length as elements of odd length. This property was obtained by Verma in his derivation of the Möbius function of the Bruhat order. Second, using the reflection principle for the symmetric group, we obtain a refinement of the inversion formula by restricting the summation to permutations ending with a given element.
