Rainbow numbers for graphs with cyclomatic number at most two
For a given graph H and n ? 1; let f(n;H) denote the maximum number m for which it is possible to colour the edges of the complete graph Kn with m colours in such a way that each subgraph H in Kn has at least two edges of the same colour. Equivalently, any edge-colouring of Kn with at least rb(n;H) = f(n;H)+1 colours contains a rainbow copy of H: The numbers f(n;H) and rb(Kn;H) are called anti-ramsey numbers and rainbow numbers, respectively. In this paper we will classify the rainbow number for a given graph H with respect to its cyclomatic number. Let H be a graph of order p >= 4 and cyclomatic number v(H) >= 2: Then rb(Kn;H) cannot be bounded from above by a function which is linear in n: If H has cyclomatic number v(H) = 1; then rb(Kn;H) is linear in n: We will compute all rainbow numbers for the bull B; which is the unique graph with 5 vertices and degree sequence (1; 1; 2; 3; 3): Furthermore, we will compute some rainbow numbers for the diamond D = K_4 - e; for K_2;3; and for the house H (complement of P_5).

We give upper bounds on weighted perfect matchings in pfaffian graphs. These upper bounds are better than Bregman's upper bounds on the number of perfect matchings. We show that some of our upper bounds are sharp for 3 and 4-regular pfaffian graphs. We apply our results to fullerene graphs.
Bounding the weight choosability number of a graph
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph, and for each $e \in E(G)$, let $L_e$ be a list of real numbers. Let $w:E(G) \to \cup_{e \in E(G)}L_e$ be an edge weighting function such that $w(e) \in L_e$ for each $e \in E(G)$, and let $c_w$ be the vertex colouring obtained by $c_w(v) = \sum_{e \ni v}w(e)$. We desire the smallest possible $k$ such that, for any choice of $\{L_e \,|\, e \in E(G)\}$ where $|L_e| \geq k$ for all $e \in E(G)$, there exists an edge weighting function $w$ for which $c_w$ is proper. The smallest such value of $k$ is the weight choosability number of $G$.
This colouring problem, introduced by Bartnicki, Grytczuk and Niwczyk (2009), is the list variation of the now famous 1-2-3 Conjecture due to Karoński, Łuczak, and Thomason (2004). Bartnicki et al. develop a method for approaching the problem based on the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. Though they show that some particular classes of graphs have weight choosability number at most $3$, it was known whether their method could be extended to prove a bound which holds for all admissible graphs. In this paper, we show that this is indeed possible, showing that every graph is $(Δ+ d + 1)$-weight choosable, where $Δ$ is the graph's maximum degree and $d$ is its degeneracy. In fact, more general results on total weight choosability are provided, where one assigns weights to edges and vertices. Improved bounds are also established for some classes of graph products.

Using the random complexes of Linial and Meshulam, we exhibit a large family of simplicial complexes for which, whenever affinely embedded into Euclidean space, the filling areas of simplicial cycles is greatly distorted. This phenomenon can be regarded as a higher order analogue of the metric distortion of embeddings of random graphs.

Motivated by the algebraic open-closed string models, we introduce and discuss an infinite-dimensional counterpart of the open-closed Hurwitz theory describing branching coverings generated both by the compact oriented surfaces and by the foam surfaces. We manifestly construct the corresponding infinite-dimensional equipped Cardy-Frobenius algebra, with the closed and open sectors are represented by conjugation classes of permutations and the pairs of permutations, i.e. by the algebra of Young diagrams and bipartite graphes respectively.
Local Clique Covering of Graphs

A k-clique covering of a simple graph G, is an edge covering of G by its cliques such that each vertex is contained in at most k cliques. The smallest k for which G admits a k-clique covering is called local clique cover number of G and is denoted by $lcc(G)$. Local clique cover number can be viewed as the local counterpart of the clique cover number which is equal to the minimum total number of cliques covering all edges. In this paper, several aspects of the problem are studied and its relationships to other well-known problems are discussed. Moreover, the local clique cover number of claw-free graphs and its subclasses are notably investigated. In particular, it is proved that local clique cover number of every claw-free graph is at most $cΔ/ \logΔ$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $c$ is a universal constant. It is also shown that the bound is tight, up to a constant factor. Furthermore, it is established that local clique number of the linear interval graphs is bounded by $\logΔ+ 1/2 \log \logΔ+ O(1)$. Finally, as a by-product, a new Bollobas-type inequality is obtained for the intersecting pairs of set systems.

Let $\mathbb{F}$ be an infinite field with characteristic different from two. For a graph $G=(V,E)$ with $V={1,...,n}$, let $S(G;\mathbb{F})$ be the set of all symmetric $n\times n$ matrices $A=[a_{i,j}]$ over $\mathbb{F}$ with $a_{i,j}\not=0$, $i\not=j$ if and only if $ij\in E$. We show that if $G$ is the complement of a partial $k$-tree and $m\geq k+2$, then for all nonsingular symmetric $m\times m$ matrices $K$ over $\mathbb{F}$, there exists an $m\times n$ matrix $U$ such that $U^T K U\in S(G;\mathbb{F})$. As a corollary we obtain that, if $k+2\leq m\leq n$ and $G$ is the complement of a partial $k$-tree, then for any two nonnegative integers $p$ and $q$ with $p+q=m$, there exists a matrix in $S(G;\reals)$ with $p$ positive and $q$ negative eigenvalues.
On replica symmetry of large deviations in random graphs

The following question is due to Chatterjee and Varadhan (2011). Fix $0<p<r<1$ and take $G\sim G(n,p)$, the Erdős-Rényi random graph with edge density $p$, conditioned to have at least as many triangles as the typical $G(n,r)$. Is $G$ close in cut-distance to a typical $G(n,r)$? Via a beautiful new framework for large deviation principles in $G(n,p)$, Chatterjee and Varadhan gave bounds on the replica symmetric phase, the region of $(p,r)$ where the answer is positive. They further showed that for any small enough $p$ there are at least two phase transitions as $r$ varies.
We settle this question by identifying the replica symmetric phase for triangles and more generally for any fixed $d$-regular graph. By analyzing the variational problem arising from the framework of Chatterjee and Varadhan we show that the replica symmetry phase consists of all $(p,r)$ such that $(r^d,h_p(r))$ lies on the convex minorant of $x\mapsto h_p(x^{1/d})$ where $h_p$ is the rate function of a binomial with parameter $p$. In particular, the answer for triangles involves $h_p(\sqrt{x})$ rather than the natural guess of $h_p(x^{1/3})$ where symmetry was previously known. Analogous results are obtained for linear hypergraphs as well as the setting where the largest eigenvalue of $G\sim G(n,p)$ is conditioned to exceed the typical value of the largest eigenvalue of $G(n,r)$. Building on the work of Chatterjee and Diaconis (2012) we obtain additional results on a class of exponential random graphs including a new range of parameters where symmetry breaking occurs. En route we give a short alternative proof of a graph homomorphism inequality due to Kahn (2001) and Galvin and Tetali (2004).
An application of a bijection of Mansour, Deng, and Du
The large Schroder numbers are known to count several classes of permutations avoiding two 4-letter patterns. Here we show they count another family of permutations, those whose left to right minima decomposition, when reversed, is 321-avoiding. The main tool is the Mansour-Deng-Du bijection from 321-avoiding permutations to Dyck paths.

On a relation between the Szeged index and the Wiener index for bipartite graphs
{\small The Wiener index $W(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of the distances between all pairs of vertices in the graph. The Szeged index $Sz(G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as $Sz(G)=\sum_{e=uv \in E}n_u(e)n_v(e)$ where $n_u(e)$ and $n_v(e)$ are, respectively, the number of vertices of $G$ lying closer to vertex $u$ than to vertex $v$ and the number of vertices of $G$ lying closer to vertex $v$ than to vertex $u$. Hansen used the computer programm AutoGraphiX and made the following conjecture about the Szeged index and the Wiener index for a bipartite connected graph $G$ with $n \geq 4$ vertices and $m \geq n$ edges: $$ Sz(G)-W(G) \geq 4n-8. $$ Moreover the bound is best possible as shown by the graph composed of a cycle on 4 vertices $C_4$ and a tree $T$ on $n-3$ vertices sharing a single vertex. This paper is to give a confirmative proof to this conjecture.
On the Inverse Erdos-Heilbronn Problem for Restricted Set Addition in Finite Groups
We provide a survey of results concerning both the direct and inverse problems to the Cauchy-Davenport theorem and Erdos-Heilbronn problem in Additive Combinatorics. We formulate an open conjecture concerning the inverse Erdos-Heilbronn problem in nonabelian groups. We extend an inverse to the Dias da Silva-Hamidoune Theorem to Z/nZ where n is composite, and we generalize this result into nonabelian groups.
Equitable Colorings of Corona Multiproducts of Graphs
A graph is equitably $k$-colorable if its vertices can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets in such a way that the number of vertices in any two sets differ by at most one. The smallest $k$ for which such a coloring exists is known as the equitable chromatic number of $G$ and denoted $χ_{=}(G)$. It is known that this problem is NP-hard in general case and remains so for corona graphs. In "Equitable colorings of Cartesian products of graphs" (2012) Lin and Chang studied equitable coloring of Cartesian products of graphs. In this paper we consider the same model of coloring in the case of corona products of graphs. In particular, we obtain some results regarding the equitable chromatic number for $l$-corona product $G \circ ^l H$, where $G$ is an equitably 3- or 4-colorable graph and $H$ is an $r$-partite graph, a path, a cycle or a complete graph. Our proofs are constructive in that they lead to polynomial algorithms for equitable coloring of such graph products provided that there is given an equitable coloring of $G$. Moreover, we confirm Equitable Coloring Conjecture for corona products of such graphs. This paper extends our results from \cite{hf}.

We study the binomial and monomial ideals arising from linear equivalence of divisors on graphs from the point of view of Gröbner theory. We give an explicit description of a minimal Gröbner bases for each higher syzygy module. In each case the given minimal Gröbner bases is also a minimal generating set. The Betti numbers of the binomial ideal and its natural initial ideal coincide and they correspond to the number of 'connected flags' in the graph. In particular the Betti numbers are independent of the characteristic of the base field. For complete graphs the problem was previously studied by Postnikov and Shapiro and by Manjunath and Sturmfels. The case of a general graph was stated as an open problem.
The motif problem
Fix a choice and ordering of four pairwise non-adjacent vertices of a parallelepiped, and call a motif a sequence of four points in R^3 that coincide with these vertices for some, possibly degenerate, parallelepiped whose edges are parallel to the axes. We show that a set of r points can contain at most r^2 motifs. Generalizing the notion of motif to a sequence of L points in R^p, we show that the maximum number of motifs that can occur in a point set of a given size is related to a linear programming problem arising from hypergraph theory, and discuss some related questions.

We introduce the notion of Kravchuk derivations of the polynomial algebra. We prove that any element of the kernel of the derivation gives a polynomial identity satisfied by the Kravchuk polynomials. Also, we prove that any kernel element of the basic Weitzenbök derivations yields a polynomial identity satisfied by the Kravchuk polynomials. We describe the corresponding intertwining maps.

The set of subspaces with a given dimension in an attenuated space has a structure of a symmetric association scheme, which is a generalization of both Grassmann schemes and bilinear forms schemes. In [K. Wang, J. Guo, F. Li, Association schemes based on attenuated space, European J. Combin. 31 (2010) 297--305], its intersection numbers were computed. In this paper, we determine its full automorphism group.

A {\it good drawing} of a graph $G$ is a drawing where the edges are non-self-intersecting and each two edges have at most one point in common, which is either a common end vertex or a crossing. The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a good drawing of $G$ in the plane. The {\it $n$-dimensional augmented cube} $AQ_n$, proposed by S.A. Choudum and V. Sunitha, is an important interconnection network with good topological properties and applications. In this paper, we obtain an upper bound on the crossing number of $AQ_n$ less than $26/324^{n}-(2n^2+7/2n-6)2^{n-2}$.
On minimal factorizations of words as products of palindromes
Given a finite word u, we define its palindromic length |u|_{pal} to be the least number n such that u=v_1v_2... v_n with each v_i a palindrome. We address the following open question: Does there exist an infinite non ultimately periodic word w and a positive integer P such that |u|_{pal}<P for each factor u of w? We give a partial answer to this question by proving that if an infinite word w satisfies the so-called (k,l)-condition for some k and l, then for each positive integer P there exists a factor u of w whose palindromic length |u|_{pal}>P. In particular, the result holds for all the k-power-free words and for the Sierpinski word.
