Network Parameterizations for the Grassmannian
Published in Algebra Number Theory 7 (2013) 2275-2311 • View Publication • BIB
Deodhar introduced his decomposition of partial flag varieties as a tool for understanding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian is also useful in the context of soliton solutions to the KP equation, as shown by Kodama and the second author. Deodhar components S_D of the Grassmannian are in bijection with certain tableaux D called Go-diagrams, and each component is isomorphic to (K*)^a \times (K)^b for some non-negative integers a and b. Our main result is an explicit parameterization of each Deodhar component in the Grassmannian in terms of networks. More specifically, from a Go-diagram D we construct a weighted network N_D and its weight matrix W_D, whose entries enumerate directed paths in N_D. By letting the weights in the network vary over K or K* as appropriate, one gets a parameterization of the Deodhar component S_D. One application of such a parameterization is that one may immediately determine which Plucker coordinates are vanishing and nonvanishing, by using the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot Lemma. We also give a (minimal) characterization of each Deodhar component in terms of Plucker coordinates. A main tool for us is the work of Marsh and Rietsch on Deodhar components in the flag variety.

A chord diagram expansion coming from some Dyson-Schwinger equations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an expression for the solution to propagator-type Dyson-Schwinger equations with one primitive at 1 loop as an expansion over rooted connected chord diagrams. Along the way we give a refinement of a classical recurrence of rooted connected chord diagrams, and a representation in terms of binary trees.

A dual of MacMahon's theorem on plane partitions
Published in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 110 (2013), 4518-4523 • View Publication • BIB
A classical theorem of MacMahon states that the number of lozenge tilings of any centrally symmetric hexagon drawn on the triangular lattice is given by a beautifully simple product formula. In this paper we present a counterpart of this formula, corresponding to the {\it exterior} of a concave hexagon obtained by turning 120 degrees after drawing each side (MacMahon's hexagon is obtained by turning 60 degrees after each step).

On the independent subsets of powers of paths and cycles
In the first part of this work we provide a formula for the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent subsets of the h-th power of a path ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a value is the number of edges of a Fibonacci cube. We show that, in general, the number of edges of the diagram is obtained by convolution of a Fibonacci-like sequence with itself. In the second part we consider the case of cycles. We evaluate the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent subsets of the h-th power of a cycle ordered by inclusion. For h=1, and n>1, such a value is the number of edges of a Lucas cube.

Eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians
Published in Compositio Math. vol 149 (2013), pp 1569-1582 • View Publication • BIB
The saturation theorem of [Knutson-Tao '99] concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of [Klyachko '98], it implies [Horn '62]'s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization [Friedland '00] to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland's problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aformentioned work together with [Thomas-Yong '12].

Sum-connectivity indices of trees and unicyclic graphs of fixed maximum degree
We obtain the maximum sum-connectivity indices of graphs in the set of trees and in the set of unicyclic graphs respectively with given number of vertices and maximum degree, and determine the corresponding extremal graphs. Additionally, we deduce the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the first two maximum sum-connectivity indices for $n\ge 4$.

A few properties of the eigenvalues of normalized graph Laplacian
Here we have investigated a few properties of the eigenvalues of normalized (geometric) graph Laplacian in different graphs. Preservation of eigenvalue 1 from a particular subgraph to the entire graph, the spectrum of the graph constructed with triangles share a common vertex have been addressed. Further using the number and degrees of common neighbors between vertices some new upper bounds for the largest eigenvalue have been introduced.

Effect on normalized graph Laplacian spectrum by motif attachment and duplication
Published in Appl. Math. Comput. 261 (2015) 382-387 • View Publication • BIB
To some extent, graph evolutionary mechanisms can be explained by its spectra. Here, we are interested in two graph operations, namely, motif (subgraph) doubling and attachment that are biologically relevant. We investigate how these two processes affect the spectrum of the normalized graph Laplacian. A high (algebraic) multiplicity of the eigenvalues $1, 1\pm 0.5, 1\pm \sqrt{0.5}$ and others has been observed in the spectrum of many real networks. We attempt to explain the production of distinct eigenvalues by motif doubling and attachment. Results on the eigenvalue $1$ are discussed separately.

Geometric RSK correspondence, Whittaker functions and symmetrized random polymers
Published in Invent. math. 197, 361-416 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
We show that the geometric lifting of the RSK correspondence introduced by A.N. Kirillov (2001) is volume preserving with respect to a natural product measure on its domain, and that the integrand in Givental's integral formula for GL(n,R)-Whittaker functions arises naturally in this context. Apart from providing further evidence that Whittaker functions are the natural analogue of Schur polynomials in this setting, our results also provide a new `combinatorial' framework for the study of random polymers. When the input matrix consists of random inverse gamma distributed weights, the probability distribution of a polymer partition function constructed from these weights can be written down explicitly in terms of Whittaker functions. Next we restrict the geometric RSK mapping to symmetric matrices and show that the volume preserving property continues to hold. We determine the probability law of the polymer partition function with inverse gamma weights that are constrained to be symmetric about the main diagonal, with an additional factor on the main diagonal. The third combinatorial mapping studied is a variant of the geometric RSK mapping for triangular arrays, which is again showed to be volume preserving. This leads to a formula for the probability distribution of a polymer model whose paths are constrained to stay below the diagonal. We also show that the analogues of the Cauchy-Littlewood identity in the setting of this paper are equivalent to a collection of Whittaker integral identities conjectured by Bump (1989) and Bump and Friedberg (1990) and proved by Stade (2001, 2002). Our approach leads to new `combinatorial' proofs and generalizations of these identities, with some restrictions on the parameters.

A simple and fast heuristic algorithm for edge-coloring of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A simple but empirically efficient heuristic algorithm for the edge-coloring of graphs is presented. Its basic idea is the displacement of "conflicts" (repeated colors in the edges incident to a vertex) along paths of adjacent vertices whose incident edges are recolored by swapping alternating colors (that is, doing a Kempe interchange). The results of performance tests on random cubic and $Δ$-regular graphs are presented, and a full implementation of the algorithm is given to facilitate its use and the reproducibility of results.

Accurate lower bounds on two-dimensional constraint capacities from corner transfer matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We analyse the capacity of several two-dimensional constraint families - the exclusion, colouring, parity and charge model families. Using Baxter's corner transfer matrix formalism combined with the corner transfer matrix renormalisation group method of Nishino and Okunishi, we calculate very tight lower bounds and estimates on the growth rate of these models. Our results strongly improve previous known lower bounds, and lead to the surprising conjecture that the capacity of the even and charge(3) constraints are identical.

Determining $x$ or $y$ mod $p^2$ with $p=x^2+dy^2$
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $d\in\{2,3,7\}$. When $(\frac{-d}p)=1$ we can write $p=x^2+dy^2$ with $x,y\in\mathbb Z$; in this paper we aim at determining $x$ or $y$ modulo $p^2$. For example, when $p=x^2+3y^2$, we show that if $p\equiv x\equiv 1\pmod 4$ then $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}(3[3\mid k]-1)(2k+1)\frac{\binom{2k}k^2}{(-16)^k}\equiv\left(\frac2p\right)2x\pmod{p^2}$$ where $[3\mid k]$ takes $1$ or $0$ according as $3\mid k$ or not, and that if $-p\equiv y\equiv 1\pmod4$ then $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\left(\frac k3\right)\frac{k\binom{2k}k^2}{(-16)^k} \equiv(-1)^{(p+1)/4}y\equiv\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}(1-3[3\mid k])\frac{k\binom{2k}k^2}{(-16)^k}\pmod{p^2}.$$ We also determine $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{k\binom{2k}k^3}{m^k}\sum_{k\le j<2k}\frac1j\quad \mbox{mod}\ p$$ for $m=1,-8,16,-64,256,-512,4096$.

Torsion in Khovanov homology of semi-adequate links
Published in Fundamenta Mathematicae (225), 277--303, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this paper is to address A. Shumakovitch's conjecture about the existence of $\Z_2$-torsion in Khovanov link homology. We analyze torsion in Khovanov homology of semi-adequate links via chromatic cohomology for graphs which provides a link between the link homology and well-developed theory of Hochschild homology. In particular, we obtain explicit formulae for torsion and prove that Khovanov homology of semi-adequate links contains $Z_2$-torsion if the corresponding Tait-type graph has a cycle of length at least 3. Computations show that torsion of odd order exists but there is no general theory to support these observations. We conjecture that the existence of torsion is related to the braid index.

On Turan's (3,4)-problem with forbidden configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We identify three 3-graphs on five vertices each missing in all known extremal configurations for Turan's (3,4)-problem and prove Turan's conjecture for 3-graphs that are additionally known not to contain any induced copies of these 3-graphs. Our argument is based on an (apparently) new technique of "indirect interpretation" that allows us to retrieve additional structure from hypothetical counterexamples to Turan's conjecture, but in rather loose and limited sense. We also include two miscellaneous calculations in flag algebras that prove similar results about some other additional forbidden subgraphs.
On Weak Chromatic Polynomials of Mixed Graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 31 (2015), 91-98 • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{mixed graph} is a graph with directed edges, called arcs, and undirected edges. A $k$-coloring of the vertices is proper if colors from ${1,2,...,k}$ are assigned to each vertex such that $u$ and $v$ have different colors if $uv$ is an edge, and the color of $u$ is less than or equal to (resp. strictly less than) the color of $v$ if $uv$ is an arc. The weak (resp. strong) chromatic polynomial of a mixed graph counts the number of proper $k$-colorings. Using order polynomials of partially ordered sets, we establish a reciprocity theorem for weak chromatic polynomials giving interpretations of evaluations at negative integers.

Cycle complex over the projective line minus three points : toward multiple zeta values cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, the author constructs a family of algebraic cycles in Bloch's cubical cycle complex over the projective line minus three points which are expected to correspond to multiple polylogarithms in one variable. Elements in this family are in particular equidimensional over the projective line minus three points. In weight greater or equal to $2$, they are naturaly extended as equidimensional cycle over the affine line. This allows to consider their fibers at the point 1 and this is one of the main differences with Gangl, Goncharov and Levin work where generic arguments are imposed for cycles corresponding to multiple polylogarithms in many variables. Considering the fiber at 1 make it possible to think of these cycles as corresponding multiple zeta values. After the introduction, the author recalls some properties of Bloch's cycle complex, presents the strategy and enlightens the difficulties on a few examples. Then a large section is devoted to the combinatorial situation which is related to the combinatoric of trivalent trees and to a differential on trees already introduced by Gangl Goncharov and Levin. In the last section, two families of cycles are constructed as solution to a "differential system" in Bloch cycle complex. One of this families contains only cycles with empty fiber at 0 and should correspond to multiple polylogarithms while the other contains only cycles empty at 1. The use of two such families is required in order to work with equidimimensional cycles and to insure the admissibility condition.

Polynomial configurations in the primes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Bergelson-Leibman theorem states that if P_1, ..., P_k are polynomials with integer coefficients, then any subset of the integers of positive upper density contains a polynomial configuration x+P_1(m), ..., x+P_k(m), where x,m are integers. Various generalizations of this theorem are known. Wooley and Ziegler showed that the variable m can in fact be taken to be a prime minus 1, and Tao and Ziegler showed that the Bergelson-Leibman theorem holds for subsets of the primes of positive relative upper density. Here we prove a hybrid of the latter two results, namely that the step m in the Tao-Ziegler theorem can be restricted to the set of primes minus 1.
Minimum-Weight Edge Discriminator in Hypergraphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 21(3), #P3.18, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we introduce the concept of minimum-weight edge-discriminators in hypergraphs, and study its various properties. For a hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, a function $λ: \mathcal V\rightarrow \mathbb Z^{+}\cup\{0\}$ is said to be an {\it edge-discriminator} on $\mathcal H$ if $\sum_{v\in E_i}{λ(v)}>0$, for all hyperedges $E_i\in \mathcal E$, and $\sum_{v\in E_i}{λ(v)}\ne \sum_{v\in E_j}{λ(v)}$, for every two distinct hyperedges $E_i, E_j \in \mathcal E$. An {\it optimal edge-discriminator} on $\mathcal H$, to be denoted by $λ_\mathcal H$, is an edge-discriminator on $\mathcal H$ satisfying $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}λ_\mathcal H (v)=\min_λ\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}{λ(v)}$, where the minimum is taken over all edge-discriminators on $\mathcal H$. We prove that any hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, with $|\mathcal E|=n$, satisfies $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V} λ_\mathcal H(v)\leq n(n+1)/2$, and equality holds if and only if the elements of $\mathcal E$ are mutually disjoint. For $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, it follows from results on Sidon sequences that $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}λ_{\mathcal H}(v)\leq |\mathcal V|^{r+1}+o(|\mathcal V|^{r+1})$, and the bound is attained up to a constant factor by the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph. Next, we construct optimal edge-discriminators for some special hypergraphs, which include paths, cycles, and complete $r$-partite hypergraphs. Finally, we show that no optimal edge-discriminator on any hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, with $|\mathcal E|=n (\geq 3)$, satisfies $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V} λ_\mathcal H (v)=n(n+1)/2-1$, which, in turn, raises many other interesting combinatorial questions.
