Counting colored planar maps: algebraicity results

We address the enumeration of properly q-colored planar maps, or more precisely, the enumeration of rooted planar maps M weighted by their chromatic polynomial χ_M(q) and counted by the number of vertices and faces. We prove that the associated generating function is algebraic when q\not=0,4 is of the form 2+2 cos (jπ/m), for integers j and m. This includes the two integer values q=2 and q=3. We extend this to planar maps weighted by their Potts polynomial P_M(q,ν), which counts all q-colorings (proper or not) by the number of monochromatic edges. We then prove similar results for planar triangulations, thus generalizing some results of Tutte which dealt with their proper q-colorings. In statistical physics terms, the problem we study consists in solving the Potts model on random planar lattices. From a technical viewpoint, this means solving non-linear equations with two "catalytic" variables. To our knowledge, this is the first time such equations are being solved since Tutte's remarkable solution of properly q-colored triangulations.

For a permutation $ω\in S_n$, Leclerc and Zelevinsky \cite{LZ} introduced a concept of $ω$-{\em chamber weakly separated collection} of subsets of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ and conjectured that all inclusion-wise maximal collections of this sort have the same cardinality $\ell(ω)+n+1$, where $\ell(ω)$ is the length of $ω$. We answer affirmatively this conjecture and present a generalization and additional results.
Initial ideals of tangent cones to Richardson varieties in the Orthogonal Grassmannian via a Orthogonal-Bounded-RSK-Correspondence

A Richardson variety $X_\ga^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian is defined to be the intersection of a Schubert variety $X^\gc$ in the Orthogonal Grassmannian and a opposite Schubert variety $X_\ga$ therein. We give an explicit description of the initial ideal (with respect to certain conveniently chosen term order) for the ideal of the tangent cone at any $T$-fixed point of $X_\ga^\gc$, thus generalizing a result of Raghavan-Upadhyay \cite{Ra-Up2}. Our proof is based on a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence, which we call the Orthogonal bounded RSK (OBRSK). The OBRSK correspondence will give a degree-preserving bijection between a set of monomials defined by the initial ideal of the ideal of the tangent cone (as mentioned above) and a `standard monomial basis'. A similar work for Richardson varieties in the ordinary Grassmannian was done by Kreiman in \cite{Kr-bkrs}.

The 4-dimensional abstract Kummer variety K^4 with 16 nodes leads to the K3 surface by resolving the 16 singularities. Here we present a simplicial realization of this minimal resolution. Starting with a minimal 16-vertex triangulation of K^4 we resolve its 16 isolated singularities - step by step - by simplicial blowups. As a result we obtain a 17-vertex triangulation of the standard PL K3 surface. A key step is the construction of a triangulated version of the mapping cylinder of the Hopf map from the real projective 3-space onto the 2-sphere with the minimum number of vertices. Moreover we study simplicial Morse functions and the changes of their levels between the critical points. In this way we obtain slicings through the K3 surface of various topological types.

We find scaling limits for the sizes of the largest components at criticality for rank-1 inhomogeneous random graphs with power-law degrees with power-law exponent τ. We investigate the case where $τ\in(3,4)$, so that the degrees have finite variance but infinite third moment. The sizes of the largest clusters, rescaled by $n^{-(τ-2)/(τ-1)}$, converge to hitting times of a "thinned" Lévy process, a special case of the general multiplicative coalescents studied by Aldous [Ann. Probab. 25 (1997) 812-854] and Aldous and Limic [Electron. J. Probab. 3 (1998) 1-59]. Our results should be contrasted to the case τ>4, so that the third moment is finite. There, instead, the sizes of the components rescaled by $n^{-2/3}$ converge to the excursion lengths of an inhomogeneous Brownian motion, as proved in Aldous [Ann. Probab. 25 (1997) 812-854] for the Erdős-Rényi random graph and extended to the present setting in Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and van Leeuwaarden [Electron. J. Probab. 15 (2010) 1682-1703] and Turova [(2009) Preprint].

A common generalization of two theorems on the face numbers of Cohen-Macaulay (CM, for short) simplicial complexes is established: the first is the theorem of Stanley (necessity) and Bjorner-Frankl-Stanley (sufficiency) that characterizes all possible face numbers of a-balanced CM complexes, while the second is the theorem of Novik (necessity) and Browder (sufficiency) that characterizes the face numbers of CM subcomplexes of the join of the boundaries of simplices.
More on the phi = beta Conjecture and Eigenvalues of Random Graph Lifts
Let $G$ be a connected graph, and let $λ_1$ and $ρ$ denote the spectral radius of $G$ and the universal cover of $G$, respectively. In \cite{Fri03}, Friedman has shown that almost every $n$-lift of $G$ has all of its new eigenvalues bounded by $O(λ_1^{1/2}ρ^{1/2})$. In \cite{LP10}, Linial and Puder have improved this bound to $O(λ_1^{1/3}ρ^{2/3})$. Friedman had conjectured that this bound can actually be improved to $ρ+ o_n(1)$ (e.g., see \cite{Fri03,HLW06}).
In \cite{LP10}, Linial and Puder have formulated two new categorizations of formal words, namely $φ$ and $β$, which assign a non-negative integer or infinity to each word. They have shown that for every word $w$, $φ(w) = 0$ iff $β(w) = 0$, and $φ(w) = 1$ iff $β(w) = 1$. They have conjectured that $φ(w) = β(w)$ for every word $w$, and have run extensive numerical simulations that strongly suggest that this conjecture is true. This conjecture, if proven true, gives us a very promising approach to proving a slightly weaker version of Friedman's conjecture, namely the bound $O(ρ)$ on the new eigenvalues (see \cite{LP10}).
In this paper, we make further progress towards proving this important conjecture by showing that $φ(w) = 2$ iff $β(w) = 2$ for every word $w$.
Universal Algebras of Hurwitz Numbers
Infinite-dimensional universal Cardy-Frobenius algebra is constructed, which unifies all particular algebras of closed and open Hurwitz numbers and is closely related to the algebra of differential operators, familiar from the theory of Generalized Kontsevich Model.
Oriented Interval Greedoids

We propose a definition of an "oriented interval greedoid" that simultaneously generalizes the notion of an oriented matroid and the construction on antimatroids introduced by L. J. Billera, S. K. Hsiao, and J. S. Provan in "Enumeration in convex geometries and associated polytopal subdivisions of spheres" [Discrete Comput. Geom. 39 (2008), no. 1-3, 123--137]. As for of oriented matroids, associated to each oriented interval greedoid is a spherical simplicial complex whose face enumeration depends only on the underlying interval greedoid.
Relative Tutte Polynomials for Colored Graphs and Virtual Knot Theory

We introduce the concept of a relative Tutte polynomial of colored graphs. We show that this relative Tutte polynomial can be computed in a way similar to the classical spanning tree expansion used by Tutte in his original paper on this subject. We then apply the relative Tutte polynomial to virtual knot theory. More specifically, we show that the Kauffman bracket polynomial (hence the Jones polynomial) of a virtual knot can be computed from the relative Tutte polynomial of its face (Tait) graph with some suitable variable substitutions. Our method offers an alternative to the ribbon graph approach, using the face graph obtained from the virtual link diagram directly.

Consider Bernoulli(1/2) percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and define a perfect matching between open and closed vertices in a way that is a deterministic equivariant function of the configuration. We want to find such matching rules that make the probability that the pair of the origin is at distance greater than $r$ decay as fast as possible. For two dimensions, we give a matching of decay $cr^{1/2}$, which is optimal. For dimension at least 3 we give a matching rule that has an exponential tail. This substantially improves previous bounds. The construction has two major parts: first we define a sequence of coarser and coarser partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an equivariant way, such that with high probability the cell of a fixed point is like a cube, and the labels in it are i.i.d. Then we define a matching for a fixed finite cell, which stabilizes as we repeatedly apply it for the cells of the consecutive partitions. Our methods also work in the case when one wants to match points of two Poisson processes, and they may be applied to allocation questions.

The operator $L_μ: f \mapsto \int \frac{f(x) - f(y)}{x - y} dμ(y)$ is, for a compactly supported measure $μ$ with an $L^3$ density, a closed, densely defined operator on $L^2(μ)$. We show that the operator $Q = p L_μ^2 - q L_μ$ has polynomial eigenfunctions if and only if $μ$ is a free Meixner distribution. The only time $Q$ has orthogonal polynomial eigenfunctions is if $μ$ is a semicircular distribution. More generally, the only time the operator $p (L_νL_μ) - q L_μ$ has orthogonal polynomial eigenfunctions is when $μ$ and $ν$ are related by a Jacobi shift.

We study repetitions in infinite words coding exchange of three intervals with permutation (3,2,1), called 3iet words. The language of such words is determined by two parameters $\varepsilon,\ell$. We show that finiteness of the index of 3iet words is equivalent to boundedness of the coefficients of the continued fraction of $\varepsilon$. In this case we also give an upper and lower estimate on the index of the corresponding 3iet word.

Tensor 2-sums and entanglement
To define a minimal mathematical framework for isolating some of the characteristic properties of quantum entanglement, we introduce a generalization of the tensor product of graphs. Inspired by the notion of a density matrix, the generalization is a simple one: every graph can be obtained by addition modulo two, possibly with many summands, of tensor products of adjacency matrices. In this picture, we are still able to prove a combinatorial analogue of the Peres-Horodecki criterion for testing separability.
A link surgery spectral sequence in monopole Floer homology

To a link L in the 3-sphere, we associate a spectral sequence whose E^2 page is the reduced Khovanov homology of L and which converges to a version of the monopole Floer homology of the branched double cover. The pages E^k for k > 1 depend only on the mutation equivalence class of L. We define a mod 2 grading on the spectral sequence which interpolates between the delta-grading on Khovanov homology and the mod 2 grading on Floer homology. We also derive a new formula for link signature that is well-adapted to Khovanov homology.
More generally, we construct new bigraded invariants of a framed link in a 3-manifold as the pages of a spectral sequence modeled on the surgery exact triangle. The differentials count monopoles over families of metrics parameterized by permutohedra. We utilize a connection between the topology of link surgeries and the combinatorics of graph associahedra. This also yields simple realizations of permutohedra and associahedra, as refinements of hypercubes.

Let $P(M)$ be the matroid base polytope of a matroid $M$. A {\em matroid base polytope decomposition} of $P(M)$ is a decomposition of the form $P(M) = \bigcup\limits_{i=1}^t P(M_{i})$ where each $P(M_i)$ is also a matroid base polytope for some matroid $M_i$, and for each $1\le i \neq j\le t$, the intersection $P(M_{i}) \cap P(M_{j})$ is a face of both $P(M_i)$ and $P(M_j)$. In this paper, we investigate {\em hyperplane splits}, that is, polytope decompositions when $t=2$. We give sufficient conditions for $M$ so $P(M)$ has a hyperplane split and characterize when $P(M_1 \oplus M_2)$ has a hyperplane split where $M_1 \oplus M_2$ denote the {\em direct sum} of matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$. We also prove that $P(M)$ has not a hyperplane split if $M$ is binary. Finally, we show that $P(M)$ has not a decomposition if its 1-skeleton is the {\em hypercube}.

We consider the number \bar N(q) of points in the projective complement of graph hypersurfaces over \F_q and show that the smallest graphs with non-polynomial \bar N(q) have 14 edges. We give six examples which fall into two classes. One class has an exceptional prime 2 whereas in the other class \bar N(q) depends on the number of cube roots of unity in \F_q. At graphs with 16 edges we find examples where \bar N(q) is given by a polynomial in q plus q^2 times the number of points in the projective complement of a singular K3 in ¶^3. In the second part of the paper we show that applying momentum space Feynman-rules over \F_q lets the perturbation series terminate for renormalizable and non-renormalizable bosonic quantum field theories.

We produce a family of reductions for Schubert intersection problems whose applicability is checked by calculating a linear combination of the dimensions involved. These reductions do not alter the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient, and they lead to an explicit solution of the intersection problem when this coefficient is 1.
