Counting nondecreasing integer sequences that lie below a barrier
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a barrier $0 \leq b_0 \leq b_1 \leq ...$, let $f(n)$ be the number of nondecreasing integer sequences $0 \leq a_0 \leq a_1 \leq ... \leq a_n$ for which $a_j \leq b_j$ for all $0 \leq j \leq n$. Known formulæfor $f(n)$ include an $n \times n$ determinant whose entries are binomial coefficients (Kreweras, 1965) and, in the special case of $b_j = rj+s$, a short explicit formula (Proctor, 1988, p.320). A relatively easy bivariate recursion, decomposing all sequences according to $n$ and $a_n$, leads to a bivariate generating function, then a univariate generating function, then a linear recursion for $\{f(n) \}$. Moreover, the coefficients of the bivariate generating function have a probabilistic interpretation, leading to an analytic inequality which is an identity for certain values of its argument.

On universal sums of polygonal numbers
Published in Sci. China Math. 58(2015), 1367-1396 • View PublicationBIB
For $m=3,4,\ldots$, the polygonal numbers of order $m$ are given by $p_m(n)=(m-2)\binom n2+n\ (n=0,1,2,\ldots)$. For positive integers $a,b,c$ and $i,j,k\ge3$ with $\max\{i,j,k\}\ge5$, we call the triple $(ap_i,bp_j,cp_k)$ universal if for any $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ there are nonnegative integers $x,y,z$ such that $n=ap_i(x)+bp_j(y)+cp_k(z)$. We show that there are only 95 candidates for universal triples (two of which are $(p_4,p_5,p_6)$ and $(p_3,p_4,p_{27})$), and conjecture that they are indeed universal triples. For many triples $(ap_i,bp_j,cp_k)$ (including $(p_3,4p_4,p_5),(p_4,p_5,p_6)$ and $(p_4,p_4,p_5)$), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be written in the form $ap_i(x)+bp_j(y)+cp_k(z)$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. We also show some related new results on ternary quadratic forms, one of which states that any nonnegative integer $n\equiv 1\pmod{6}$ can be written in the form $x^2+3y^2+24z^2$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. In addition, we pose several related conjectures one of which states that for any $m=3,4,\ldots$ each natural number can be expressed as $p_{m+1}(x_1)+p_{m+2}(x_2)+p_{m+3}(x_3)+r$ with $x_1,x_2,x_3\in\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $r\in\{0,\ldots,m-3\}$.

Regularization of certain divergent series of polynomials
We investigate the Cesaro and Abel sums of divergent series of the form $\sum_{n\geq 0} a_n T^nP(x)$, where $P$ is a real polynomial and $T$ is a translation invariant operator on the space of real polynomials.

q-Distributions on boxed plane partitions
Published in Selecta Mathematica, New Series, 16 (2010), no. 4, 731--789 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce elliptic weights of boxed plane partitions and prove that they give rise to a generalization of MacMahon's product formula for the number of plane partitions in a box. We then focus on the most general positive degenerations of these weights that are related to orthogonal polynomials; they form three two-dimensional families. For distributions from these families we prove two types of results. First, we construct explicit Markov chains that preserve these distributions. In particular, this leads to a relatively simple exact sampling algorithm. Second, we consider a limit when all dimensions of the box grow and plane partitions become large, and prove that the local correlations converge to those of ergodic translation invariant Gibbs measures. For fixed proportions of the box, the slopes of the limiting Gibbs measures (that can also be viewed as slopes of tangent planes to the hypothetical limit shape) are encoded by a single quadratic polynomial.
Point-sets in general position with many similar copies of a pattern
Published in Geombinatorics 19 (2010), no. 4, 133-145 • Search Publication
For every pattern $P$, consisting of a finite set of points in the plane, $S_{P}(n,m)$ is defined as the largest number of similar copies of $P$ among sets of $n$ points in the plane without $m$ points on a line. A general construction, based on iterated Minkovski sums, is used to obtain new lower bounds for $S_{P}(n,m)$ when $P$ is an arbitrary pattern. Improved bounds are obtained when $P$ is a triangle or a regular polygon with few sides. It is also shown that $S_{P}(n,m)\geq n^{2-ε}$ whenever $m(n)\to \infty$ as $n \to\infty$. Finite sets with no collinear triples and not containing the 4 vertices of any parallelogram are called \emph{parallelogram-free}. The more restricted function $S_{P} ^{\nparallel}(n)$, defined as the maximum number of similar copies of $P$ among parallelogram-free sets of $n$ points, is also studied. It is proved that $Ω(n\log n)\leq S_{P}^{\nparallel}(n)\leq O(n^{3/2})$.

On a reciprocity law for finite multiple zeta values
Published • View PublicationBIB
It was shown in that harmonic numbers satisfy certain reciprocity relations, which are in particular useful for the analysis of the quickselect algorithm. The aim of this work is to show that a reciprocity relation from \cite{KirProd98,ProSchnKu} can be generalized to finite variants of multiple zeta values, involving a finite variant of the shuffle identity for multiple zeta values. We present the generalized reciprocity relation and furthermore a simple elementary proof of the shuffle identity using only partial fraction decomposition. We also present an extension of the reciprocity relation to weighted sums.

A q-analogue of de Finetti's theorem
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 16 (2009), no. 1, paper #R78 • View PublicationBIB
A q-analogue of de Finetti's theorem is obtained in terms of a boundary problem for the q-Pascal graph. For q a power of prime this leads to a characterisation of random spaces over the Galois field F_q that are invariant under the natural action of the infinite group of invertible matrices with coefficients from F_q.

Basis of Diagonally Alternating Harmonic Polynomials for low degree
Published in JCT-A 118 (2011) 37--57 • View PublicationBIB
Given a list of $n$ cells $L=[(p_1,q_1),...,(p_n, q_n)]$ where $p_i, q_i\in \textbf{Z}_{\ge 0}$, we let $Δ_L=\det |{(p_j!)^{-1}(q_j!)^{-1} x^{p_j}_iy^{q_j}_i} |$. The space of diagonally alternating polynomials is spanned by $\{Δ_L\}$ where $L$ varies among all lists with $n$ cells. For $a>0$, the operators $E_a=\sum_{i=1}^{n} y_i\partial_{x_i}^a$ act on diagonally alternating polynomials and Haiman has shown that the space $A_n$ of diagonally alternating harmonic polynomials is spanned by $\{E_λΔ_n\}$. For $t=(t_m,...,t_1)\in \textbf{Z}_{> 0}^m$ with $t_m>...>t_1>0$, we consider here the operator $F_t=\det\big\|E_{t_{m-j+1}+(j-i)}\big\|$. Our first result is to show that $F_tΔ_L$ is a linear combination of $Δ_{L'}$ where $L'$ is obtained by {\sl moving} $\ell(t)=m$ distinct cells from $L$ in some determined fashion. This allows us to control the leading term of some elements of the form $F_{t_{(1)}}... F_{t_{(r)}}Δ_n$. We use this to describe explicit bases of some of the bihomogeneous components of $A_n=\bigoplus A_n^{k,l}$ where $A_n^{k,l}=\hbox{Span}\{E_λΔ_n :\ell(λ)=l, |λ|=k\}$. More precisely we give an explicit basis of $A_n^{k,l}$ whenever $k<n$. To this end, we introduce a new variation of Schensted insertion on a special class of tableaux. This produces a bijection between partitions and this new class of tableaux. The combinatorics of those tableaux $T$ allows us to know exactly the leading term of $F_TΔ_n$ where $F_T$ is the operator corresponding to the columns of $T$ and whenever $n$ is bigger than the weight of $T$.

We give an explicit Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials attached to the root system C_n (with equal multiplicities). By inversion we obtain an explicit expansion for two-row Macdonald polynomials of type C.

Susceptibility in inhomogeneous random graphs
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 19 (2012), P31 (59 pages) • View PublicationBIB
We study the susceptibility, i.e., the mean size of the component containing a random vertex, in a general model of inhomogeneous random graphs. This is one of the fundamental quantities associated to (percolation) phase transitions; in practice one of its main uses is that it often gives a way of determining the critical point by solving certain linear equations. Here we relate the susceptibility of suitable random graphs to a quantity associated to the corresponding branching process, and study both quantities in various natural examples.

Duality in inhomogeneous random graphs, and the cut metric
Published in Random Structures and Algorithms 39 (2011) 399-411 • View PublicationBIB
The classical random graph model $G(n,λ/n)$ satisfies a `duality principle', in that removing the giant component from a supercritical instance of the model leaves (essentially) a subcritical instance. Such principles have been proved for various models; they are useful since it is often much easier to study the subcritical model than to directly study small components in the supercritical model. Here we prove a duality principle of this type for a very general class of random graphs with independence between the edges, defined by convergence of the matrices of edge probabilities in the cut metric.

Tiling Lattices with Sublattices, I

We use Fourier methods to prove that if $n > 1$ translates of sublattices of $Z^d$ tile $Z^d$, and all the sublattices are Cartesian products of arithmetic progressions, then two of the tiles must be translates of each other. This is a multi-dimensional generalization of the Mirsky-Newman Theorem.

On the singularity probability of discrete random matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M_n$ be an $n$ by $n$ random matrix where each entry is +1 or -1 independently with probability 1/2. Our main result implies that the probability that $M_n$ is singular is at most $(1/\sqrt{2} + o(1))^n$, improving on the previous best upper bound of $(3/4 + o(1))^n$ proven by Tao and Vu in arXiv:math/0501313v2. This paper follows a similar approach to the Tao and Vu result, including using a variant of their structure theorem. We also extend this type of exponential upper bound on the probability that a random matrix is singular to a large class of discrete random matrices taking values in the complex numbers, where the entries are independent but are not necessarily identically distributed.

A stability property for coefficients in Kronecker products of complex S_n characters
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009), #22 • View PublicationBIB
In this note we make explicit a stability property for Kronecker coefficients that is implicit in a theorem of Y. Dvir. Even in the simplest nontrivial case this property was overlooked despite of the work of several authors. As an application we give a new formula for some Kronecker coefficients.

Improved bounds on the number of numerical semigroups of a given genus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We improve the previously best known lower and upper bounds on the number n_g of numerical semigroups of genus g. Starting from a known recursive description of the tree T of numerical semigroups, we analyze some of its properties and use them to construct approximations of T by generating trees whose nodes are labeled by certain parameters of the semigroups. We then translate the succession rules of these trees into functional equations for the generating functions that enumerate their nodes, and solve these equations to obtain the bounds. Some of our bounds involve the Fibonacci numbers, and the others are expressed as generating functions. We also give upper bounds on the number of numerical semigroups having an infinite number of descendants in T.

Possible volumes of t-(v, t + 1) Latin trades
The concept of $t$-$(v,k)$ trades of block designs previously has been studied in detail. See for example A. S. Hedayat (1990) and Billington (2003). Also Latin trades have been studied in detail under various names, see A. D. Keedwell (2004) for a survey. Recently Khanban, Mahdian and Mahmoodian have extended the concept of Latin trades and introduced $\Ts{t}{v}{k}$. Here we study the spectrum of possible volumes of these trades, $S(t,k)$. Firstly, similarly to trades of block designs we consider $(t+2)$ numbers $s_i=2^{t+1}-2^{(t+1)-i}$, $0\leq i\leq t+1$, as critical points and then we show that $s_i\in S(t,k)$, for any $0\leq i\leq t+1$, and if $s\in (s_i,s_{i+1}),0\leq i\leq t$, then $s\notin S(t,t+1)$. As an example, we determine S(3,4) precisely.

A linear algebraic approach to orthogonal arrays and Latin squares
To study orthogonal arrays and signed orthogonal arrays, Ray-Chaudhuri and Singhi (1988 and 1994) considered some module spaces. Here, using a linear algebraic approach we define an inclusion matrix and find its rank. In the special case of Latin squares we show that there is a straightforward algorithm for generating a basis for this matrix using the so-called intercalates. We also extend this last idea.

Euler characteristic of the truncated order complex of generalized noncrossing partitions
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 16(1) (2009), Article #R143, 10 pp. • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to complete the study, begun in the first author's PhD thesis, of the topology of the poset of generalized noncrossing partitions associated to real reflection groups. In particular, we calculate the Euler characteristic of this poset with the maximal and minimal elements deleted. As we show, the result on the Euler characteristic extends to generalized noncrossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups.

A curious $q$-analogue of Hermite polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two well-known $q$-Hermite polynomials are the continuous and discrete $q$-Hermite polynomials. In this paper we consider a new family of $q$-Hermite polynomials and prove several curious properties about these polynomials. One striking property is the connection with $q$-Fibonacci and $q$-Lucas polynomials. The latter relation yields a generalization of the Touchard-Riordan formula.
