Pieri's Formula for Generalized Schur Polynomials
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 26 (2007), no. 1, 27-45 • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice, the lattice of all Young diagrams, has the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, the correspondence between certain matrices and pairs of semi-standard Young tableaux with the same shape. Fomin introduced generalized Schur operators to generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. In this sense, generalized Schur operators are generalizations of semi-standard Young tableaux. We define a generalization of Schur polynomials as expansion coefficients of generalized Schur operators. We show that the commutating relation of generalized Schur operators implies Pieri's formula to generalized Schur polynomials.

Multivariable Christoffel-Darboux Kernels and Characteristic Polynomials of Random Hermitian Matrices
Published in SIGMA 2 (2006), 085, 12 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study multivariable Christoffel-Darboux kernels, which may be viewed as reproducing kernels for antisymmetric orthogonal polynomials, and also as correlation functions for products of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. Using their interpretation as reproducing kernels, we obtain simple proofs of Pfaffian and determinant formulas, as well as Schur polynomial expansions, for such kernels. In subsequent work, these results are applied in combinatorics (enumeration of marked shifted tableaux) and number theory (representation of integers as sums of squares).

Let's Expand Rota's Twelvefold Way For Counting Partitions!
Rota's Twelvefold Way gave formulas for the numbers of partitions which could be formed in twelve scenarios. This proposed AMM article expands Rota's 4 x 3 table. The resulting 6 x 5 table considers a broader collection of splitting-distributing-grouping-arranging scenarios, each of which can be visualized with the distribution of m items into certain kinds of bins. The additional counts or scenarios include: the Bell numbers B(m), the partition numbers p(m), arrangements of m books on b shelves, standings of m teams in a league, arrangements of m books into b scattered stacks, and pairings of 2m items. Teaching remarks are included. The two additional rows (due to K. Bogart) consider ordering the items within the bins. One additional column distributes the items into an unspecified number of bins, each receiving at least one item. The other (due to T. Brylawski) distributes the items into bins such that the number of bins containing a given number of items is specified. The quotient and summation relationships amongst the thirty counts are stated. A closely related table formed by the same six rows and seven certain columns is used to complete and to organize a 6 x 7 family of counting sequences in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

$f$-Vectors of Barycentric Subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simplicial complex or more generally Boolean cell complex $Δ$ we study the behavior of the $f$- and $h$-vector under barycentric subdivision. We show that if $Δ$ has a non-negative $h$-vector then the $h$-polynomial of its barycentric subdivision has only simple and real zeros. As a consequence this implies a strong version of the Charney-Davis conjecture for spheres that are the subdivision of a Boolean cell complex. For a general $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ the $h$-polynomial of its $n$-th iterated subdivision shows convergent behavior. More precisely, we show that among the zeros of this $h$-polynomial there is one converging to infinity and the other $d-1$ converge to a set of $d-1$ real numbers which only depends on $d$.
Standard graded vertex cover algebras, cycles and leaves
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to characterize simplicial complexes which have standard graded vertex cover algebras. This property has several nice consequences for the squarefree monomial ideals defining these algebras. It turns out that such simplicial complexes are closely related to a range of hypergraphs which generalize bipartite graphs and trees. These relationships allow us to obtain very general results on standard graded vertex cover algebras which cover previous major results on Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals.
A Hybrid of Darboux's Method and Singularity Analysis in Combinatorial Asymptotics
Published • View PublicationBIB
A ``hybrid method'', dedicated to asymptotic coefficient extraction in combinatorial generating functions, is presented, which combines Darboux's method and singularity analysis theory. This hybrid method applies to functions that remain of moderate growth near the unit circle and satisfy suitable smoothness assumptions--this, even in the case when the unit circle is a natural boundary. A prime application is to coefficients of several types of infinite product generating functions, for which full asymptotic expansions (involving periodic fluctuations at higher orders) can be derived. Examples relative to permutations, trees, and polynomials over finite fields are treated in this way.

Simplicial cycles and the computation of simplicial trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the concept of a cycle from graphs to simplicial complexes. We show that a simplicial cycle is either a sequence of facets connected in the shape of a circle, or is a cone over such a structure. We show that a simplicial tree is a connected cycle-free simplicial complex, and use this characterization to produce an algorithm that checks in polynomial time whether a simplicial complex is a tree. We also present an efficient algorithm for checking whether a simplicial complex is grafted, and therefore Cohen-Macaulay.

Period polynomials and Ihara brackets
Published in Journal of Lie Theory 17:2 (2007), 229--239 • View PublicationBIB
Schneps [J. Lie Theory 16 (2006), 19--37] has found surprising links between Ihara brackets and even period polynomials. These results can be recovered and generalized by considering some identities relating Ihara brackets and classical Lie brackets. The period polynomials generated by this method are found to be essentially the Kohnen-Zagier polynomials.

Tromino tilings of Domino-Deficient Rectangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider tromino tilings of $m\times n$ domino-deficient rectangles, where $3|(mn-2)$ and $m,n\geq0$, and characterize all cases of domino removal that admit such tilings, thereby settling the open problem posed by J. M. Ash and S. Golomb in \cite {marshall}. Based on this characterization, we design a procedure for constructing such a tiling if one exists. We also consider the problem of counting such tilings and derive the exact formula for the number of tilings for $2\times(3t+1)$ rectangles, the exact generating function for $4\times(3t+2)$ rectangles, where $t\geq0$, and an upper bound on the number of tromino tilings for $m\times n$ domino-deficient rectangles. We also consider general 2-deficiency in $n\times4$ rectangles, where $n\geq8$, and characterize all pairs of squares which do not permit a tromino tiling.

Facets of the (s,t)-p-path polytope
We give a partial description of the (s,t)-p-path polytope of a directed graph D which is the convex hull of the incidence vectors of simple directed (s,t)-paths in D of length p. First, we point out how the (s,t)-p-path polytope is located in the family of path and cycle polyhedra. Next, we give some classes of valid inequalities which are very similar to inequalities which are valid for the p-cycle polytope, that is, the convex hull of the incidence vectors of simple cycles of length p in D. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for these inequalities to be facet defining. Furthermore, we consider a class of inequalities that has been identified to be valid for (s,t)-paths of cardinality at most p. Finally, we transfer the results to related polytopes, in particular, the undirected counterpart of the (s,t)-p-path polytope.

The mean Dehn function of abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
While Dehn functions, D(n), of finitely presented groups are very well studied in the literature, mean Dehn functions are much less considered. M. Gromov introduced the notion of mean Dehn function of a group, $D_{mean}(n)$, suggesting that in many cases it should grow much more slowly than the Dehn function itself. Using only elementary counting methods, this paper presents some computations pointing into this direction. Particularizing them to the case of any finite presentation of a finitely generated abelian group (for which it is well known that $D(n)\sim n^2$ except in the 1-dimensional case), we show that the three variations $D_{osmean}(n)$, $D_{smean}(n)$ and $D_{mean}(n)$ all are bounded above by $Kn(\ln n)^2$, where the constant $K$ depends only on the presentation (and the geodesic combing) chosen. This improves an earlier bound given by Kukina and Roman'kov.

The Multiplicity Conjecture for Barycentric Subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simplicial complex $Δ$ we study the effect of barycentric subdivision on ring theoretic invariants of its Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular, for Stanley-Reisner rings of barycentric subdivisions we verify a conjecture by Huneke and Herzog & Srinivasan, that relates the multiplicity of a standard graded $k$-algebra to the product of the maximal and minimal shifts in its minimal free resolution up to the height. On the way to proving the conjecture we develop new and list well known results on behavior of dimension, Hilbert series, multiplicity, local cohomology, depth and regularity when passing from the Stanley-Reisner ring of $Δ$ to the one of its barycentric subdivision.

On the Pytkeev property in spaces of continuous functions
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 136 (2008), 1125-1135 • View PublicationBIB
Answering a question of Sakai, we show that the minimal cardinality of a set of reals X such that C_p(X) does not have the Pytkeev property is equal to the pseudo-intersection number p. Our approach leads to a natural characterization of the Pytkeev property of C_p(X) by means of a covering property of X, and to a similar result for the Reznicenko property of C_p(X).

Face ring multiplicity via CM-connectivity sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
The multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is verified for the face rings of the following classes of simplicial complexes: matroid complexes, complexes of dimension one and two, and Gorenstein complexes of dimension at most four. The lower bound part of this conjecture is also established for the face rings of all doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes whose 1-skeleton's connectivity does not exceed the codimension plus one as well as for all (d-1)-dimensional d-Cohen-Macaulay complexes. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new interpretation of the minimal shifts in the resolution of the face ring via the Cohen-Macaulay connectivity of the skeletons of the complex.

Nilpotent Singer Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $N$ be a nilpotent group normal in a group $G$. Suppose that $G$ acts transitively upon the points of a finite non-Desarguesian projective plane $\mathcal{P}$. We prove that, if $\mathcal{P}$ has square order, then $N$ must act semi-regularly on $\mathcal{P}$. In addition we prove that if a finite non-Desarguesian projective plane $\mathcal{P}$ admits more than one nilpotent group which is regular on the points of $\mathcal{P}$ then $\mathcal{P}$ has non-square order and the automorphism group of $\mathcal{P}$ has odd order.

Quadratic transformations of Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.
