Computing generating sets of lattice ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we present a new algorithm for computing a generating set of a lattice ideal. This algorithm is based on a project-and-lift approach and is implemented in 4ti2. We also include a computational comparison of several existing implementations to compute such generating sets.

Random orderings of the integers and card shuffling
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study random orderings of the integers with a certain invariance property. We describe all such orders in a simple way. We define and represent random shuffles of a countable set of labels and then give an interpretation of these orders in terms of a class of generalized riffle shuffles.

Combinations and Mixtures of Optimal Policies in Unichain Markov Decision Processes are Optimal
We show that combinations of optimal (stationary) policies in unichain Markov decision processes are optimal. That is, let M be a unichain Markov decision process with state space S, action space A and policies π_j^*: S -> A (1\leq j\leq n) with optimal average infinite horizon reward. Then any combination πof these policies, where for each state i in S there is a j such that π(i)=π_j^*(i), is optimal as well. Furthermore, we prove that any mixture of optimal policies, where at each visit in a state i an arbitrary action π_j^*(i) of an optimal policy is chosen, yields optimal average reward, too.

Embeddability of Arrangements of Pseudocircles into the Sphere
Published • View PublicationBIB
An arrangement of pseudocircles is a finite set of oriented closed Jordan curves each two of which cross each other in exactly two points. To describe the combinatorial structure of arrangements on closed orientable surfaces, in (Linhart, Ortner 2004) so-called *intersection schemes* were introduced. Building up on results about the latter, we first clarify the notion of embedding of an arrangement. Once this is done it is shown how the embeddability of an arrangement depends on the embeddability of its subarrangements. The main result presented is that an arrangement of pseudocircles can be embedded into the sphere if and only if all of its subarrangements of four pseudocircles are embeddable into the sphere as well.
Grad and classes with bounded expansion I. decompositions
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-739 (2005) 1-21 • Search Publication
We introduce classes of graphs with bounded expansion as a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, grad r(G). For these classes we prove the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. This generalizes and simplifies several earlier results (obtained for minor closed classes).

Grad and Classes with Bounded Expansion II. Algorithmic Aspects
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-740 (2005) 1-20 • Search Publication
Classes of graphs with bounded expansion are a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, ∇r(G). These classes are also characterized by the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. These results lead to several new linear time algorithms, such as an algorithm for counting all the isomorphs of a fixed graph in an input graph or an algorithm for checking whether there exists a subset of vertices of a priori bounded size such that the subgraph induced by this subset satisfies some arbirtrary but fixed first order sentence. We also show that for fixed p, computing the distances between two vertices up to distance p may be performed in constant time per query after a linear time preprocessing. We also show, extending several earlier results, that a class of graphs has sublinear separators if it has sub-exponential expansion. This result result is best possible in general.
Grad and classes with bounded expansion III. restricted dualities
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-741 (2005) 1-14 • Search Publication
We study restricted homomorphism dualities in the context of classes with bounded expansion. This presents a generalization of restricted dualities obtained earlier for bounded degree graphs and also for proper minor closed classes. This is related to distance coloring of graphs and to the ''approximative version'' of Hadwiger conjecture.

Permutation representations of the braid group commutator subgroup
We study the representations of the commutator subgroup of the braid group with n strands in the symmetric group of degree r. Motivated by some experimental results, we conjecture that for n>r, every such representation is trivial.
Faà di Bruno Hopf algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a short review on the Faà di Bruno formulas, and some Hopf algebras associated to them. These allow, among several other things, a short proof of the Lie-Scheffers theorem, and relating the Lagrange inversion formulas with antipodes. The link of Faà di Bruno formulas with the theory of set partitions is developed in some detail.

Stein's Method and Random Character Ratios
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stein's method is used to prove limit theorems for random character ratios. Tools are developed for four types of structures: finite groups, Gelfand pairs, twisted Gelfand pairs, and association schemes. As one example an error term is obtained for a central limit theorem of Kerov on the spectrum of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group generated by i-cycles, or equivalently for the character ratio of a Plancherel distributed representation on an i-cycle. Other main examples include an error term for a central limit theorem of Ivanov on character ratios of random projective representations of the symmetric group, and a new central limit theorem for the spectrum of certain graphs whose vertices are the set of perfect matchings on 2n symbols. The error terms in the resulting limit theorems are typically O(n^{-1/4}) or better. The results are obtained with remarkably little information: a character formula for a single representation close to the trivial representation and estimates on two step transition probabilities of a random walk. Although the limit theorems stated in this paper are all for the case of normal approximation, many of the tools developed are quite general. Indeed, both the construction of an exchangeable pair used for Stein's method and lemmas computing certain moments are useful for arbitrary distributional approximation.

In math.QA/0506507 I. Gelfand and the authors introduced and studied a new class of algebras associated to directed graphs. In this paper we show that these algebras are Koszul for a large class of layered (i.e. ranked) graphs.

Smith Normal Form and Acyclic Matrics
Published • View PublicationBIB
An approach, based on the Smith Normal Form, is introduced to study the spectra of symmetric matrices with a given graph. The approach serves well to explain how the path cover number (resp. diameter of a tree T) is related to the maximum multiplicity occurring for an eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix whose graph is T (resp. the minimum number q(T) of distinct eigenvalues over the symmetric matrices whose graphs are T). The approach is also applied to a more general class of connected graphs G, not necessarily trees, in order to establish a lower bound on q(G).

Chord Diagrams and Gauss Codes for Graphs
Chord diagrams on circles and their intersection graphs (also known as circle graphs) have been intensively studied, and have many applications to the study of knots and knot invariants, among others. However, chord diagrams on more general graphs have not been studied, and are potentially equally valuable in the study of spatial graphs. We will define chord diagrams for planar embeddings of planar graphs and their intersection graphs, and prove some basic results. Then, as an application, we will introduce Gauss codes for immersions of graphs in the plane and give algorithms to determine whether a particular crossing sequence is realizable as the Gauss code of an immersed graph.

Bergman Complexes, Coxeter Arrangements, and Graph Associahedra
Tropical varieties play an important role in algebraic geometry. The Bergman complex B(M) and the positive Bergman complex B+(M) of an oriented matroid M generalize to matroids the notions of the tropical variety and positive tropical variety associated to a linear ideal. Our main result is that if A is a Coxeter arrangement of type Phi with corresponding oriented matroid M_Phi, then B+(M_Phi) is dual to the graph associahedron of type Phi, and B(M_Phi) equals the nested set complex of A. In addition, we prove that for any orientable matroid M, one can find |mu(M)| different reorientations of M such that the corresponding positive Bergman complexes cover B(M), where mu(M) denotes the Mobius function of the lattice of flats of M.

Normal approximations for descents and inversions of permutations of multisets
Published in Journal of Theoretical Probability, Volume 20, Issue 2, June 2007, Pages 309-325 • View PublicationBIB
Normal approximations for descents and inversions of permutations of the set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ are well known. A number of sequences that occur in practice, such as the human genome and other genomes, contain many repeated elements. Motivated by such examples, we consider the number of inversions of a permutation $π(1), π(2),...,π(n)$ of a multiset with $n$ elements, which is the number of pairs $(i,j)$ with $1\leq i < j \leq n$ and $π(i)>π(j)$. The number of descents is the number of $i$ in the range $1\leq i < n$ such that $π(i) > π(i+1)$. We prove that, appropriately normalized, the distribution of both inversions and descents of a random permutation of the multiset approaches the normal distribution as $n\to\infty$, provided that the permutation is equally likely to be any possible permutation of the multiset and no element occurs more than $αn$ times in the multiset for a fixed $α$ with $0<α< 1$. Both normal approximation theorems are proved using the size biased version of Stein's method of auxiliary randomization and are accompanied by error bounds.

A simple recurrence for covers of the sphere with branch points of arbitrary ramification
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of counting ramified covers of a Riemann surface up to homeomorphism was proposed by Hurwitz in the late 1800's. This problem translates combinatorially into factoring a permutation of specified cycle type, with certain conditions on the cycle types of the factors, such as minimality and transitivity. Goulden and Jackson have given a proof for the number of minimal, transitive factorizations of a permutation into transpositions. This proof involves a partial differential equation for the generating series, called the Join-Cut equation. Recently, Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer have found the number of minimal, transitive factorizations of a permutation into arbitrary unspecified factors. This was proved by a purely combinatorial argument, based on a direct bijection between factorizations and certain objects called $m$-Eulerian trees. In this paper, we give a simple partial differential equation for Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer's generating series, and for Goulden and Jackson's generating series, as well as a new proof of the result by Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer. We apply algebraic methods based on Lagrange's theorem, and combinatorial methods based on a new use of Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer's $m$-Eulerian trees.

Published in Electron. J. Combin. 13 (2006), no. 1, Research Paper 71, 40 pp. (electronic) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study Grothendieck polynomials from a combinatorial viewpoint. We introduce the factorial Grothendieck polynomials, analogues of the factorial Schur functions and present some of their properties, and use them to produce a generalisation of a Littlewood-Richardson rule for Grothendieck polynomials.
On Determining Minimal Spectrally Arbitrary Patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a new family of minimal spectrally arbitrary patterns which allow for arbitrary spectrum by using the Nilpotent-Jacobian method. The novel approach here is that we use the Intermediate Value Theorem to avoid finding an explicit nilpotent realization of the new minimal spectrally arbitrary patterns.
