We find higher rank generalizations of the Razumov--Stroganov sum rules at $q=-e^{iπ\over k+1}$ for $A_{k-1}$ models with open boundaries, by constructing polynomial solutions of level one boundary quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations for $U_q(\frak{sl}(k))$. The result takes the form of a character of the symplectic group, that leads to a generalization of the number of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices. We also investigate the other combinatorial point $q=-1$, presumably related to the geometry of nilpotent matrix varieties.

Because they play a role in our understanding of the symmetric group algebra, Lie idempotents have received considerable attention. The Klyachko idempotent has attracted interest from combinatorialists, partly because its definition involves the major index of permutations.
For the symmetric group S_n, we look at the symmetric group algebra with coefficients from the field of rational functions in n variables q_1,..., q_n. In this setting, we can define an n-parameter generalization of the Klyachko idempotent, and we show it is a Lie idempotent in the appropriate sense. Somewhat surprisingly, our proof that it is a Lie element emerges from Stanley's theory of P-partitions.

In this paper we study the partially ordered set Q^J of cells in Rietsch's cell decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of an arbitrary flag variety P^J_{\geq 0}. Our goal is to understand the geometry of P^J_{\geq 0}: Lusztig has proved that this space is contractible, but it is unknown whether the closure of each cell is contractible, and whether P^J_{\geq 0} is homeomorphic to a ball. The order complex |Q^J| is a simplicial complex which can be thought of as a combinatorial approximation of P^J_{\geq 0}. Using combinatorial tools such as Bjorner's EL-labellings and Dyer's reflection orders, we prove that Q^J is graded, thin and EL-shellable. As a corollary, we deduce that Q^J is Eulerian and that the Euler characteristic of the closure of each cell is 1. Additionally, our results imply that |Q^J| is homeomorphic to a ball, and moreover, that Q^J is the face poset of some regular CW complex homeomorphic to a ball.

We consider tilings and packings of $\RR^d$ by integral translates of cubes $[0,2[^d$, which are $4\ZZ^d$-periodic. Such cube packings can be described by cliques of an associated graph, which allow us to classify them in dimension $d\leq 4$. For higher dimension, we use random methods for generating some examples.
Such a cube packing is called {\em non-extendible} if we cannot insert a cube in the complement of the packing.
In dimension 3, there is a unique non-extendible cube packing with 4 cubes. We prove that $d$-dimensional cube packings with more than $2^d-3$ cubes can be extended to cube tilings. We also give a lower bound on the number $N$ of cubes of non-extendible cube packings.
Given such a cube packing and $z\in \ZZ^d$, we denote by $N_z$ the number of cubes inside the $\4t$-cube $z+[0,4[^d$ and call {\em second moment} the average of $N_z^2$. We prove that the regular tiling by cubes has maximal second moment and give a lower bound on the second moment of a cube packing in terms of its density and dimension.

In \cite{Elek} we proved that the limit of a weakly convergent sequence of finite graphs can be viewed as a graphing or a continuous field of infinite graphs. Thus one can associate a type $II_1$-von Neumann algebra to such graph sequences. We show that in this case the integrated density of states exists that is the weak limit of the spectra of the graph Laplacians of the finite graphs is the KNS-spectral measure of the graph Laplacian of the limit graphing. Using this limit technique we prove a Cheeger type inequality for finite graphs.

The $F$-triangle is a refined face count for the generalised cluster complex of Fomin and Reading. We compute the $F$-triangle explicitly for all irreducible finite root systems. Furthermore, we use these results to partially prove the "$M=F$ Conjecture" of Armstrong which predicts a surprising relation between the $F$-triangle and the Möbius function of his $m$-divisible partition poset associated to a finite root system.

We provide a description of unlabelled enumeration techniques, with complete proofs, for graphs that can be canonically obtained by substituting 2-pole networks for the edges of core graphs. Using structure theorems for toroidal and projective-planar graphs containing no K33-subdivisions, we apply these techniques to obtain their unlabelled enumeration.
The isoperimetric constant of the random graph process

The isoperimetric constant of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, $i(G)$, is the minimum of $\frac{|\partial S|}{|S|}$, taken over all nonempty subsets $S\subset V(G)$ of size at most $n/2$, where $\partial S$ denotes the set of edges with precisely one end in $S$. A random graph process on $n$ vertices, $\widetilde{G}(t)$, is a sequence of $\binom{n}{2}$ graphs, where $\widetilde{G}(0)$ is the edgeless graph on $n$ vertices, and $\widetilde{G}(t)$ is the result of adding an edge to $\widetilde{G}(t-1)$, uniformly distributed over all the missing edges. We show that in almost every graph process $i(\widetilde{G}(t))$ equals the minimal degree of $\widetilde{G}(t)$ as long as the minimal degree is $o(\log n)$. Furthermore, we show that this result is essentially best possible, by demonstrating that along the period in which the minimum degree is typically $Θ(\log n)$, the ratio between the isoperimetric constant and the minimum degree falls from 1 to 1/2, its final value.

We show that every subset of SL_2(Z/pZ) grows rapidly when it acts on itself by the group operation. It follows readily that, for every set of generators A of SL_2(Z/pZ), every element of SL_2(Z/pZ) can be expressed as a product of at most O((log p)^c) elements of the union of A and A^{-1}, where c and the implied constant are absolute.
The Circuit Ideal of a Vector Configuration

The circuit ideal, $\ica$, of a configuration $\A = \{\a_1, ..., \a_n\} \subset \Z^d$ is the ideal generated by the binomials ${\x}^{\cc^+} - {\x}^{\cc^-} \in \k[x_1, ..., x_n]$ as $\cc = \cc^+ - \cc^- \in \Z^n$ varies over the circuits of $\A$. This ideal is contained in the toric ideal, $\ia$, of $\A$ which has numerous applications and is nontrivial to compute. Since circuits can be computed using linear algebra and the two ideals often coincide, it is worthwhile to understand when equality occurs. In this paper we study $\ica$ in relation to $\ia$ from various algebraic and combinatorial perspectives. We prove that the obstruction to equality of the ideals is the existence of certain polytopes. This result is based on a complete characterization of the standard pairs/associated primes of a monomial initial ideal of $\ica$ and their differences from those for the corresponding toric initial ideal. Eisenbud and Sturmfels proved that $\ia$ is the unique minimal prime of $\ica$ and that the embedded primes of $\ica$ are indexed by certain faces of the cone spanned by $\A$. We provide a necessary condition for a particular face to index an embedded prime and a partial converse. Finally, we compare various polyhedral fans associated to $\ia$ and $\ica$. The Gröbner fan of $\ica$ is shown to refine that of $\ia$ when the codimension of the ideals is at most two.
Vector spaces spanned by the angle sums of polytopes
In this paper, we will describe the space spanned by the angle-sums of polytopes, recorded in the alpha-vector. We will consider the angles sums of simplices and the angles sums and face numbers of simplicial polytopes and general polytopes. We will construct families of polytopes whose angle sums span the spaces of polytopes defined by the Gram and Perles equations, analogues of the Euler and Dehn-Sommerville equations. We show that the dimensions of the affine span of the space of angle sums of simplices is floor[(d-1)/2] + 1, and that of the angle sums and face numbers of simplicial polytopes and general polytopes are d-1 and 2d-3 respectively.
The Mathieu group $M_{12}$ and its pseudogroup extension $M_{13}$

We study a construction of the Mathieu group $M_{12}$ using a game reminiscent of Loyd's ``15-puzzle''. The elements of $M_{12}$ are realized as permutations on~12 of the~13 points of the finite projective plane of order~3. There is a natural extension to a ``pseudogroup'' $M_{13}$ acting on all~13 points, which exhibits a limited form of sextuple transitivity. Another corollary of the construction is a metric, akin to that induced by a Cayley graph, on both $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$. We develop these results, and extend them to the double covers and automorphism groups of $M_{12}$ and $M_{13}$, using the ternary Golay code and $12 \x 12$ Hadamard matrices. In addition, we use experimental data on the quasi-Cayley metric to gain some insight into the structure of these groups and pseudogroups.
Graphs and $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-actions
Let $\mathcal{A}_n^k$ denote all nonbounding effective smooth $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-actions on $n$-dimensional smooth closed connected manifolds, each of which is cobordant to one with finite fixed set. Motivated by GKM theory, one can associate to each action of $\mathcal{A}_n^k$ a $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-colored regular graph of valence $n$. Together with the combinatorics of colored graphs, equivariant cobordism and the tom Dieck-Kosniowski-Stong localization theorem, we give a lower bound for the number of fixed points of an action in $\mathcal{A}_n^k$, which can become the best possible in some cases; we determine the existence and the equivariant cobordism classification of all actions in $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ with $h=3,4$, where $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ is the subset of $\mathcal{A}_n^k$, each of which is equivariantly cobordant to an effective $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-action fixing just $h$ isolated points, and it is well-known that $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ is empty if $h=1,2$; we characterize the explicit relationships among tangent representations at fixed points of each action in $\mathcal{A}_n^k(h)$ with $h=3,4$, which actually give the explicit solution of the Smith problem in such cases. As an application, we also study the minimum number of fixed points of all actions in $\mathcal{A}_n^k$.
New directions in enumerative chess problems

Normally a chess problem must have a unique solution, and is deemed unsound even if there are alternatives that differ only in the order in which the same moves are played. In an enumerative chess problem, the set of moves in the solution is (usually) unique but the order is not, and the task is to count the feasible permutations via an isomorphic problem in enumerative combinatorics. Almost all enumerative chess problems have been ``series-movers'', in which one side plays an uninterrupted series of moves, unanswered except possibly for one move by the opponent at the end. This can be convenient for setting up enumeration problems, but we show that other problem genres also lend themselves to composing enumerative problems. Some of the resulting enumerations cannot be shown (or have not yet been shown) in series-movers.
This article is based on a presentation given at the banquet in honor of Richard Stanley's 60th birthday, and is dedicated to Stanley on this occasion.
Hamiltonicity of Cubic Cayley Graphs

Following a problem posed by Lovász in 1969, it is believed that every connected vertex-transitive graph has a Hamilton path. This is shown here to be true for cubic Cayley graphs arising from groups having a $(2,s,3)$-presentation, that is, for groups $G=\la a,b| a^2=1, b^s=1, (ab)^3=1, etc. \ra$ generated by an involution $a$ and an element $b$ of order $s\geq3$ such that their product $ab$ has order 3. More precisely, it is shown that the Cayley graph $X=Cay(G,\{a,b,b^{-1}\})$ has a Hamilton cycle when $|G|$ (and thus $s$) is congruent to 2 modulo 4, and has a long cycle missing only two vertices (and thus necessarily a Hamilton path) when $|G|$ is congruent to 0 modulo 4.
Majorization for Changes in Angles Between Subspaces, Ritz Values, and Graph Laplacian Spectra

Many inequality relations between real vector quantities can be succinctly expressed as "weak (sub)majorization" relations. We explain these ideas and apply them in several areas: angles between subspaces, Ritz values, and graph Laplacian spectra, which we show are all surprisingly related... An application of our Ritz values weak majorization result for Laplacian graph spectra comparison is suggested, based on the possibility to interpret eigenvalues of the edge Laplacian of a given graph as Ritz values of the edge Laplacian of the complete graph. We prove that $ \sum_k |\lambda1_k - \lambda2_k| \leq n l,$ where $\lambda1_k$ and $\lambda2_k$ are all ordered elements of the Laplacian spectra of two graphs with the same $n$ vertices and with $l$ equal to the number of differing edges.
Some families of componentwise linear monomial ideals

Let R=k[x_1,...,x_n] be a polynomial ring over a field k. Let J={j_1,...,j_t} be a subset of [n]={1,...,n}, and let m_J denote the ideal (x_{j_1},...,x_{j_t}) of R. Given subsets J_1,...,J_s of [n] and positive integers a_1,...,a_s, we study ideals of the form I=m_{J_1}^{a_1} \cap ... \cap m_{J_s}^{a_s}. These ideals arise naturally, for example, in the study of fat points, tetrahedral curves, and Alexander duality of squarefree monomial ideals. Our main focus is determining when ideals of this form are componentwise linear. Using polymatroidality, we prove that I is always componentwise linear when s <= 3 or when J_i \cup J_j = [n] for all i \neq j. When s >= 4, we give examples to show that I may or may not be componentwise linear. We apply these results to ideals of small sets of general fat points in multiprojective space, and we extend work of Fatabbi, Lorenzini, Valla, and the first author by computing the graded Betti numbers in the s=2 case. Since componentwise linear ideals satisfy the Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan when char(k)=0, our work also yields new cases in which this conjecture holds.
Duality and monodromy reducibility of $A$-hypergeometric systems

We study $A$-hypergeometric systems $H_A(β)$ in the sense of Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky under two aspects: the structure of their holonomically dual system, and reducibility of their rank module.
We prove first that rank-jumping parameters always correspond to reducible systems, and we show that the property of being reducible is ``invariant modulo the lattice''. In the second part we study a conjecture of Nobuki Takayama which states that the holonomic dual of $H_A(β)$ is of the form $H_A(β')$ for suitable $β'$. We prove the conjecture for all matrices $A$ and generic parameter $β$, exhibit an example that shows that in general the conjecture cannot hold, and present a refined version of the conjecture.
Questions on both duality and reducibility have been impossible to answer with classical methods. This paper may be seen as an example of the usefulness, and scope of applications, of the homological tools for $A$-hypergeometric systems developed in \cite{MMW}.

In this paper we refine the well-known permutation statistic "descent" by fixing parity of (exactly) one of the descent's numbers. We provide explicit formulas for the distribution of these (four) new statistics. We use certain differential operators to obtain the formulas. Moreover, we discuss connection of our new statistics to the Genocchi numbers. We also provide bijective proofs of some of our results.
