A Resolution of the McCarty Conjecture
The McCarty Conjecture states that any McCarty Matrix (an $n\times n$ matrix $A$ with positive integer entries and each of the $2n$ row and column sums equal to $n$), can be additively decomposed into two other matrices, $B$ and $C$, such that $B$ has row and column sumsets both equal to $\{1, 2,... n\}$, and $C$ has row and column sumsets both equal to $\{0, 1,... n-1\}$. The problem can also be formulated in terms of bipartite graphs. In this paper we use probabilistic methods to resolve this conjecture.
Two-block paths in oriented graphs of large semidegree
We study the existence of oriented paths with two blocks in oriented graphs under semidegree conditions. A block of an oriented path is a maximal directed subpath. Given positive integers $k$ and $\ell$ with $k/2\le \ell < k$, we establish a semidegree function that guarantees the containment of every oriented path with two blocks of sizes $\ell$ and $k-\ell$. As a corollary, we show that every oriented graph with all in- and out-degrees at least $3k/4$ contains every two-block path with $k$ arcs. Our results extend previous work on Stein's conjecture and related problems concerning oriented paths.

A convergence technique for the game i-Mark
The game of i-Mark is an impartial combinatorial game introduced by Sopena (2016). The game is parametrized by two sets of positive integers $S$, $D$, where $\min D\ge 2$. From position $n\ge 0$ one can move to any position $n-s$, $s\in S$, as long as $n-s\ge 0$, as well as to any position $n/d$, $d\in D$, as long as $n>0$ and $d$ divides $n$. The game ends when no more moves are possible, and the last player to move is the winner. Sopena, and subsequently Friman and Nivasch (2021), characterized the Sprague-Grundy sequences of many cases of i-Mark$(S,D)$ with $|D|=1$. Friman and Nivasch also obtained some partial results for the case i-Mark$(\{1\},\{2,3\})$. In this paper we present a convergence technique that gives polynomial-time algorithms for the Sprague-Grundy sequence of many instances of i-Mark with $|D|>1$. In particular, we prove our technique works for all games i-Mark$(\{1\},\{d_1,d_2\})$. Keywords: Combinatorial game, impartial game, Sprague-Grundy function, convergence, dynamic programming.
Classical Simulation of Quantum CSP Strategies
We prove that any perfect quantum strategy for the two-prover game encoding a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) can be simulated via a perfect classical strategy with an extra classical communication channel, whose size depends only on $(i)$ the size of the shared quantum system used in the quantum strategy, and $(ii)$ structural parameters of the CSP template. The result is obtained via a combinatorial characterisation of perfect classical strategies with extra communication channels and a geometric rounding procedure for the projection-valued measurements involved in quantum strategies. A key intermediate step of our proof is to establish that the gap between the classical chromatic number of graphs and its quantum variant is bounded when the quantum strategy involves shared quantum information of bounded size.

On the Quantum Chromatic Gap
The largest known gap between quantum and classical chromatic number of graphs, obtained via quantum protocols for colouring Hadamard graphs based on the Deutsch--Jozsa algorithm and the quantum Fourier transform, is exponential. We put forth a quantum pseudo-telepathy version of Khot's $d$-to-$1$ Games Conjecture and prove that, conditional to its validity, the gap is unbounded: There exist graphs whose quantum chromatic number is $3$ and whose classical chromatic number is arbitrarily large. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a certain form of pseudo-telepathic XOR games would imply the conjecture and, thus, the unboundedness of the quantum chromatic gap. As two technical steps of our proof that might be of independent interest, we establish a quantum adjunction theorem for Pultr functors between categories of relational structures, and we prove that the Dinur--Khot--Kindler--Minzer--Safra reduction, recently used for proving the $2$-to-$2$ Games Theorem, is quantum complete.

Steiner triple systems with high discrepancy
In this paper, we initiate the study of discrepancy questions for combinatorial designs. Specifically, we show that, for every fixed $r\ge 3$ and $n\equiv 1,3 \pmod{6}$, any $r$-colouring of the triples on $[n]$ admits a Steiner triple system of order $n$ with discrepancy $Ω(n^2)$. This is not true for $r=2$, but we are able to asymptotically characterise all $2$-colourings which do not contain a Steiner triple system with high discrepancy. The key step in our proofs is a characterization of 3-uniform hypergraphs avoiding a certain natural type of induced subgraphs, contributing to the structural theory of hypergraphs.

Fundamental groups of moduli spaces of real weighted stable curves
The ordinary and $S_n$-equivariant fundamental groups of the moduli space $\overline{M_{0,n+1}}(\mathbb{R})$ of real $(n+1)$-marked stable curves of genus $0$ are known as \emph{cactus groups} $J_n$ and have applications both in geometry and the representation theory of Lie algebras. In this paper, we compute the ordinary and $S_n$-equivariant fundamental groups of the Hassett space of weighted real stable curves $\overline{M_{0,\mathcal{A}}}(\mathbb{R})$ with $S_n$-symmetric weight vector $\mathcal{A} = (1/a, \ldots, 1/a, 1)$, which we call \emph{weighted cactus groups} $J_n^a$. We show that $J_n^a$ is obtained from the usual cactus presentation by introducing braid relations, which successively simplify the group from $J_n$ to $S_n \rtimes \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ as $a$ increases. Our proof is by decomposing $\overline{M_{0,\mathcal{A}}}(\mathbb{R})$ as a polytopal complex, generalizing a similar known decomposition for $\overline{M_{0,n+1}}(\mathbb{R})$. In the unweighted case, these cells are known to be cubes and are `dual' to the usual decomposition into associahedra (by the combinatorial type of the stable curve). For $\overline{M_{0,\mathcal{A}}}(\mathbb{R})$, our decomposition instead consists of products of permutahedra. The cells of the decomposition are indexed by weighted stable trees, but `dually' to the usual indexing.

Descent generating polynomials for ($n-3$)- and ($n-4$)-stack-sortable (pattern-avoiding) permutations
In this paper, we find distribution of descents over $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations in terms of Eulerian polynomials. Our results generalize the enumeration results by Claesson, Dukes, and Steingrímsson on $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations. Moreover, we find distribution of descents on $(n-2)$-, $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations that avoid any given pattern of length 3, which extends known results in the literature on distribution of descents over pattern-avoiding 1- and 2-stack-sortable permutations. Our distribution results also give enumeration of $(n-2)$-, $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations avoiding any pattern of length 3. One of our conjectures links our work to stack-sorting with restricted stacks, and the other conjecture states that 213-avoiding permutations sortable with $t$ stacks are equinumerous with 321-avoiding permutations sortable with $t$ stacks for any $t$.

Recent Progress in Ramsey Theory
The classical Ramsey numbers $r(s,t)$ denote the minimum $n$ such that every red-blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ contains either a red clique of order $s$ or a blue clique of order $t$. These quantities are the centerpiece of graph Ramsey Theory, and have been studied for almost a century. The Erdős-Szekeres Theorem (1935) shows that for each $s \geq 2$, $r(s,t) = O(t^{s - 1})$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$. We introduce a new approach using pseudorandom graphs which shows $r(4,t) = Ω(t^3/(\log t)^4)$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$, answering an old conjecture of Erdős, and we illustrate how to apply this approach to many other Ramsey and related combinatorial problems.

Proof of a conjecture on the shape-Wilf-equivalence for partially ordered patterns
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
A partially ordered pattern (abbreviated POP) is a partially ordered set (poset) that generalizes the notion of a pattern when we are not concerned with the relative order of some of its letters. The notion of partially ordered patterns provides a convenient language to deal with large sets of permutation patterns. In analogy to the shape-Wilf-equivalence for permutation patterns, Burstein-Han-Kitaev-Zhang initiated the study of the shape-Wilf-equivalence for POPs which would result in the shape-Wilf-equivalence for large sets of permutation patterns. The main objective of this paper is to confirm a recent intriguing conjecture posed by Burstein-Han-Kitaev-Zhang concerning the shape-Wilf-equivalence for POPs of length $k$. This is accomplished by establishing a bijection between two sets of pattern-avoiding transversals of a given Young diagram.

Equivalences and Distinctions in Lexicographic Shellability of Posets
We present two perhaps surprisingly small posets, one graded and one non-graded, that are CC-shellable in the sense of Kozlov and TCL-shellable in the sense of Hersh, but not CL-shellable in the sense of Björner and Wachs. In the spirit of Björner and Wachs' recursive atom orderings (RAO) and Hersh and Stadnyk's generalized recursive atom orderings (GRAO), we also introduce a notion called recursive first atom sets (RFAS). An RFAS is a set of conditions on the atoms of each interval in a finite bounded poset $P$ that are necessary for CC-shellability of $P$ and sufficient for shellability of $P$. We also prove that under an extra condition, $P$ is CC-shellable if and only if it admits an RFAS, in the same way that RAOs provide a reformulation of CL-shellability.
Counting independent sets in expanding bipartite regular graphs
In this paper we provide an asymptotic expansion for the number of independent sets in a general class of regular, bipartite graphs satisfying some vertex-expansion properties, extending results of Jenssen and Perkins on the hypercube and strengthening results of Jenssen, Perkins and Potukuchi. More precisely, we give an expansion of the independence polynomial of such graphs using a polymer model and the cluster expansion. In addition to the number of independent sets, our results yields information on the typical structure of (weighted) independent sets in such graphs. The class of graphs we consider covers well-studied cases like the hypercube or the middle layers graph, and we show further that it includes any Cartesian product of bipartite, regular base graphs of bounded size. To this end, we prove strong bounds on the vertex expansion of bipartite and regular Cartesian product graphs, which might be of independent interest.

Persistent homology of Morse decomposition in Markov chains based on combinatorial multivector fields
In this paper, we introduce a novel persistence framework for Morse decompositions in Markov chains using combinatorial multivector fields. Our approach provides a structured method to analyze recurrence and stability in finite-state stochastic processes. In our setting filtrations are governed by transition probabilities rather than spatial distances. We construct multivector fields directly from Markov transition matrices, treating states and transitions as elements of a directed graph. By applying Morse decomposition to the induced multivector field, we obtain a hierarchical structure of invariant sets that evolve under changes in transition probabilities. This structure naturally defines a persistence diagram, where each Morse set is indexed by its topological and dynamical complexity via homology and Conley index dimensions.
Valid Cuts for the Design of Potential-based Flow Networks
The construction of a cost minimal network for flows obeying physical laws is an important problem for the design of electricity, water, hydrogen, and natural gas infrastructures. We formulate this problem as a mixed-integer non-linear program with potential-based flows. The non-convexity of the constraints stemming from the potential-based flow model together with the binary variables indicating the decision to build a connection make these programs challenging to solve. We develop a novel class of valid inequalities on the fractional relaxations of the binary variables. Further, we show that this class of inequalities can be separated in polynomial time for solutions to a fractional relaxation. This makes it possible to incorporate these inequalities into a branch-and-cut framework. The advantage of these inequalities is lastly demonstrated in a computational study on the design of real-world gas transport networks.
On Finding All Connected Maximum-Sized Common Subgraphs in Multiple Labeled Graphs
We present an exact algorithm for computing all common subgraphs with the maximum number of vertices across multiple graphs. Our approach is further extended to handle the connected Maximum Common Subgraph (MCS), identifying the largest common subgraph in terms of either vertices or edges across multiple graphs, where edges or vertices may additionally be labeled to account for possible atom types or bond types, a classical labeling used in molecular graphs. Our approach leverages modular product graphs and a modified Bron-Kerbosch algorithm to enumerate maximal cliques, ensuring all intermediate solutions are retained. A pruning heuristic efficiently reduces the modular product size, improving computational feasibility. Additionally, we introduce a graph ordering strategy based on graph-kernel similarity measures to optimize the search process. Our method is particularly relevant for bioinformatics and cheminformatics, where identifying conserved structural motifs in molecular graphs is crucial. Empirical results on molecular datasets demonstrate that our approach is scalable and fast.

Real Tropical Quartics and their Bitangents: Counting with Patchworking
For certain tropical quartic curves the existing techniques could not predict the lifting behavior of their bitangents over the real numbers. We close this gap by using patchworking techniques. Further, this paper provides an analysis of the combinatorial types of real tropical quartic curves according to their real topology and number of real bitangents. This paper is accompanied by an extension for polymake; the computational data is available in the database collection polyDB.

Graphs generated from minimal sets of finite point-set topologies
In 1985, Golumbic and Scheinerman established an equivalence between comparability graphs and containment graphs, graphs whose vertices represent sets, with edges indicating set containment. A few years earlier, McMorris and Zaslavsky characterized upper bound graphs, those derived from partially ordered sets where two elements share an edge if they have a common upper bound, by a specific edge clique cover condition. In this paper, we introduce a unifying framework for these results using finite point set topologies. Given a finite topology, we define a graph whose vertices correspond to its elements, with edges determined by intersections of their minimal containing sets, where intersection is understood in terms of the topological separation axioms. This construction yields a natural sequence of graph classes, one for each separation axiom, that connects and extends both classical results in a structured and intuitive way.

Matroid polytopes with small rank
For a lattice polytope $P$, the rank of $P$ is defined by $F-(\dim P+1)$, where $F$ is the number of facets of $P$. In this paper, we study matroid polytopes with small rank. More precisely, we characterize matroid independence polytopes and graphic matroid base polytopes with rank at most three. Furthermore, using this characterization, we investigate their relationships with order polytopes, stable set polytopes, and edge polytopes.

Helly-type theorems for monotone properties of boxes
We present a unified approach to prove Helly-type theorems for monotone properties of boxes, such as having large volume or containing points from a given set. As a corollary, we obtain new proofs for several earlier results regarding specific monotone properties. Our results generalise to $H$-convex sets as well.

Big Ramsey degrees and the two-branching pseudotree
We prove that each finite chain in the two-branching countable ultrahomogeneous pseudotree has finite big Ramsey degrees. This is in contrast to the recent result of Chodounský, Eskew, and Weinert that antichains of size two have infinite big Ramsey degree in the pseudotree. Combining a lower bound result of theirs with work in this paper shows that chains of length two in the pseudotree have big Ramsey degree exactly seven. The pseudotree is the first example of a countable ultrahomogeneous structure in a finite language in which some finite substructures have finite big Ramsey degrees while others have infinite big Ramsey degrees.
