Towards the classification of scattered binomials
Let \( q \) be a prime power and \( n \) an integer. An \( \mathbb{F}_q \)-linearized polynomial \( f \) is said to be scattered if it satisfies the condition that for all \( x, y \in \mathbb{F}_q^n \setminus \{ 0 \} \), whenever \( \frac{f(x)}{x} = \frac{f(y)}{y} \), it follows that \( \frac{x}{y} \in \mathbb{F}_q \).
In this paper, we focus on scattered binomials. Two families of scattered binomials are currently known: the one from Lunardon and Polverino (LP), given by $f(x) = δx^{q^s} + x^{q^{n-s}},$ and the one from Csajbók, Marino, Polverino, and Zanella (CMPZ), given by $f(x) = δx^{q^s} + x^{q^{s + n/2}},$ where \( n = 6 \) or \( n = 8 \).
Using algebraic varieties as a tool, we prove some necessary conditions for a binomial to be scattered. As a corollary, we obtain that when \( q \) is sufficiently large and \( n \) is prime, a binomial is scattered if and only if it is of the form (LP). Moreover we obtain a complete classification of scattered binomial in $\Fn$ when $n\leq8$ and $q$ is large enough.
On a tree-based variant of bandwidth and forbidding simple topological minors
We obtain structure theorems for graphs excluding a fan (a path with a universal vertex) or a dipole ($K_{2,k}$) as a topological minor. The corresponding decompositions can be computed in FPT linear time. This is motivated by the study of a graph parameter we call treebandwidth which extends the graph parameter bandwidth by replacing the linear layout by a rooted tree such that neighbours in the graph are in ancestor-descendant relation in the tree.
We deduce an approximation algorithm for treebandwidth running in FPT linear time from our structure theorems. We complement this result with a precise characterisation of the parameterised complexity of computing the parameter exactly.
Determining the minimum size of maximal 1-plane graphs
A 1-plane graph is a graph together with a drawing in the plane in such a way that each edge is crossed at most once. A 1-plane graph is maximal if no edge can be added without violating either 1-planarity or simplicity. Let $m(n)$ denote the minimum size of a maximal $1$-plane graph of order $n$. Brandenburg et al. established that
$m(n)\ge 2.1n-\frac{10}{3}$ for all $n\ge 4$, which was improved by Barát and Tóth to $m(n)\ge \frac{20}{9}n-\frac{10}{3}$. In this paper, we confirm that $m(n)=\left\lceil\frac{7}{3}n\right\rceil-3$ for all $n\ge 5$.
An edge labeling of graphs from Rados partition regularity condition
A vertex $v$ is called an AR-vertex, if $v$ has distinct edge weight sums for each distinct subset of edges incident on $v$. i.e., if $\{x_1,x_2,\dots,x_k\}$ are the edge labels of the edges incident on $v$, then the $2^k$ subset sums are all distinct. An injective edge labeling $f$ of a graph $G$ is said to be an AR-labeling of $G$, if $f:E \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ is such that every vertex in $G$ is an AR-vertex under $f$. A graph $G$ is said to be an AR-graph, if there exists an AR-labeling $f:E\rightarrow \{1,2,\dots,m\}$, where $m$ denotes the number of edges of $G$. A study of AR-labeling and AR-graphs is initiated in this paper.
Interpretable Machine Learning for Kronecker Coefficients
We analyze the saliency of neural networks and employ interpretable machine learning models to predict whether the Kronecker coefficients of the symmetric group are zero or not. Our models use triples of partitions as input features, as well as b-loadings derived from the principal component of an embedding that captures the differences between partitions. Across all approaches, we achieve an accuracy of approximately 83% and derive explicit formulas for a decision function in terms of b-loadings. Additionally, we develop transformer-based models for prediction, achieving the highest reported accuracy of over 99%.
Quiver Grassmannians for the Bott-Samelson resolution of type A Schubert varieties
We realise the Bott-Samelson resolutions of type A Schubert varieties as quiver Grassmannians. In order to explicitly describe this isomorphism, we introduce the notion of a \textit{geometrically compatible} decomposition for any permutation in $S_n$. For smooth type A Schubert varieties, we identify a suitable dimension vector such that the corresponding quiver Grassmannian is isomorphic to the Schubert variety. To obtain these isomorphisms, we construct a special quiver with relations and investigate two classes of quiver Grassmannians for this quiver.
Forbidden configurations and dominating bicliques in undirected 2-quasi best match graphs
2-quasi best match graphs (2-qBMGs) are directed graphs that capture a
notion of close relatedness in phylogenetics. Here, we investigate the
undirected underlying graph of a 2-qBMG (un-2qBMG) and show that they
contain neither a path $P_l$ nor a cycle $C_l$ of length $l\geq 6$ as an
induced subgraph. This property guarantees the existence of specific
vertex decompositions with dominating bicliques that provide further
insights into their structure.
An Efficiently Computable Lower Bound for the Independence Number of Hypergraphs
We introduce a lower bound for the independence number of an arbitrary $k$-uniform hypergraph that only depends on the number of vertices and number of edges of the hypergraph.
On $\mathcal{F}$-multicolor Turán number of hypergraph graphs
The Ruzsa-Szemerédi $(6,3)$-problem can be equivalently stated as determining the maximum number of edge-disjoint triangles on $n$ vertices such that no triangle is formed by edges from three distinct triangle-copies. Gowers and Janzer extended this problem by establishing an analogous result for complete graphs. A natural generalization of the two results, first introduced by Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli, asks for the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a graph $F$ on $n$ vertices such that no copy of $G$ is formed by edges originating from distinct $F$-copies. This maximum number, denoted by $ex_F(n,G)$, is called the {\em $F$-multicolor Turán number} of $G$. This paper focuses on the setting of uniform hypergraphs. We first prove that for $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{F}$, $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=o(n^k)$ if and only if there exists a homomorphism from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{F}$. For degenerate case, we show that $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=n^{k-o(1)}$ whenever $\mathcal{G}$ contains a $k$-uniform tight triangle. These results extend previous results. We further establish corresponding supersaturation and blowup statements. In the non-degenerate setting, we derive matching lower and upper bounds for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ to fail to attain the upper bound, under the assumption that the extremal graphs for $\mathcal{G}$ are stable. As an application, we refine a result due to Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli. Furthermore, we completely characterize $\mathcal{F}$ for which $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ does not attain the upper bound when $\mathcal{G}$ is one of the three special intersecting graphs: Fano plane, extended triangle and $r$-book of $r$-edges with $r=3,4$.
Parameterised algorithms for temporally satisfying reconfiguration problems
Given a static vertex-selection problem (e.g. independent set, dominating set) on a graph, we can define a corresponding temporally satisfying reconfiguration problem on a temporal graph which asks for a sequence of solutions to the vertex-selection problem at each time such that we can reconfigure from one solution to the next. We can think of each solution in the sequence as a set of vertices with tokens placed on them; our reconfiguration model allows us to slide tokens along active edges of a temporal graph at each time-step.
We show that it is possible to efficiently check whether one solution can be reconfigured to another, and show that approximation results on the static vertex-selection problem can be adapted with a lifetime factor to the reconfiguration version. Our main contributions are fixed-parameter tractable algorithms with respect to: enumeration time of the related static problem; the combination of temporal neighbourhood diversity and lifetime of the input temporal graph; and the combination of lifetime and treewidth of the footprint graph.
Nice q-analogs of orthogonal polynomials with nice moments: Some simple examples
In this note I collect some typical examples of orthogonal polynomials with simple moments where both moments and orthogonal polynomials have nice q-analogs.
Hyperplane arrangements and the Gauss map of a pencil
We show that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a central hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal A$, coincide with the multidegrees of the Gauss map of a pencil of hypersurfaces naturally associated to $\mathcal A$. As a consequence, we obtain a proof of the Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture for matroids representable over a field of characteristic zero.
Statistics on monotonically ordered non-crossing partitions
We study some combinatorial statistics defined on the set $NC^{(mton)}(n)$ of monotonically ordered non-crossing partitions of {1,...,n}, and on the set $NC_2^{(mton)}(2n)$ of monotonically ordered non-crossing pair-partitions of {1,...,2n}. Unlike in the analogous results known for unordered non-crossing partitions, the computations of expectations and variances for natural block-counting statistics on $NC^{(mton)}(n)$ and for the expectation of the area statistic on $NC_2^{(mton)}(2n)$ turn out to yield a logarithmic regime. An important role in our study is played by a nice tree structure on the disjoint union of the $NC^{(mton)}(n)$'s, which we use to streamline our arguments. As an illustration of how these ideas can be applied to calculations of cumulants in monotone probability, we discuss some combinatorial aspects of the monotonic Poisson process.
Etude du graphe divisoriel 6
The divisor graph is the non oriented graph whose vertices are the positive integers, and edges are the {a,b} such that a divides b or b divides a. Let F(x,y) be the maximum number of integers<= x belonging in one of y pairwise disjoint simple path of the restriction of the divisor graph to integers <= x. Our main result is the following. There exist two real numbers K >c>0 such that for every x and y with x>=2y>=2 , we have cx / log(x/y) <= F(x,y) <= Kx / log(x/y). It answers a question of Erdös.
On cyclotomic nearly-doubly-regular tournaments
Nearly-doubly-regular tournaments have played significant roles in extremal graph theory. In this note, we construct new cyclotomic nearly-doubly-regular tournaments and determine their spectrum by establishing a new connection between cyclotomic nearly-doubly-regular tournaments and almost difference sets from combinatorial design theory. Furthermore, under the celebrated Hardy-Littlewood conjecture F in analytic number theory, our results confirm the conjecture due to Sergey Savchenko (J. Graph Theory {\bf 83} (2016), 44--77) on the existence of infinitely many nearly-doubly-regular tournaments with the canonical spectrum.
Euler characteristics of higher rank double ramification loci in genus one
Double ramification loci parametrise marked curves where a weighted sum of the markings is linearly trivial; higher rank loci are obtained by imposing several such conditions simultaneously. We obtain closed formulae for the orbifold Euler characteristics of double ramification loci, and their higher rank generalisations, in genus one. The rank one formula is a polynomial, while the higher rank formula involves greatest common divisors of matrix minors. The proof is based on a recurrence relation, which allows for induction on the rank and number of markings.
A framework for the generalised Erdős-Rothschild problem and a resolution of the dichromatic triangle case
The Erdős-Rothschild problem from 1974 asks for the maximum number of $s$-edge colourings in an $n$-vertex graph which avoid a monochromatic copy of $K_k$, given positive integers $n,s,k$. In this paper, we systematically study the generalisation of this problem to a given forbidden family of colourings of $K_k$. This problem typically exhibits a dichotomy whereby for some values of $s$, the extremal graph is the `trivial' one, namely the Turán graph on $k-1$ parts, with no copies of $K_k$; while for others, this graph is no longer extremal and determining the extremal graph becomes much harder.
We generalise a framework developed for the monochromatic Erdős-Rothschild problem to the general setting and work in this framework to obtain our main results, which concern two specific forbidden families: triangles with exactly two colours, and improperly coloured cliques. We essentially solve these problems fully for all integers $s \geq 2$ and large $n$. In both cases we obtain an infinite family of structures which are extremal for some $s$, which are the first results of this kind.
A consequence of our results is that for every non-monochromatic colour pattern, every extremal graph is complete partite. Our work extends work of Hoppen, Lefmann and Schmidt and of Benevides, Hoppen and Sampaio.
Discrete isoperimetric inequalities on the strong products of paths
For a graph $G=(V,\ E)$ and a nonempty set $S\subseteq V$, the \emph{vertex boundary} of $S$, denoted by $\partial_G(S)$, is defined to be the set of vertices that are not in $S$ but have at least one neighbor in $S$. In this paper, for $G$ being a strong product of two paths, we determine the cases in which $|\partial_G(S)|$ is minimized.
Higher Rank Macdonald Polynomials
In this paper, we introduce higher rank generalizations of Macdonald polynomials. The higher rank non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are Laurent polynomials in several sets of variables which form weight bases for higher rank polynomial representations of double affine Hecke algebras with respect to higher rank Cherednik operators. We prove that these polynomials satisfy generalized versions of the classical Knop--Sahi relations and we give combinatorial descriptions of their weights. The higher rank symmetric Macdonald polynomials are defined as Hecke-symmetrizations of the higher rank non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and form eigenbases for the spaces of Hecke-invariant higher rank polynomials with respect to generalized finite variable Macdonald operators. We prove that the higher rank symmetric Macdonald polynomials satisfy stability properties allowing for the construction of infinite variable limits. These higher rank symmetric Macdonald functions form eigenbases for certain representations of the (positive) elliptic Hall algebra with respect to generalized infinite variable Macdonald operators. Lastly, we show that the higher rank polynomial representations may be used to construct higher rank polynomial representations of the double Dyck path algebra. Scoring Nim
Nim is a well-known combinatorial game, in which two players alternately remove stones from distinct piles. A player who removes the last stone wins under the normal play rule, while a player loses under the misère play rule. In this paper, we propose a new variant of Nim with scoring that generalizes both the normal and misère play versions of Nim as special cases. We study the theoretical aspects of this extended game and analyze its fundamental properties, such as optimal strategies and payoff functions.
