Random permutations acting on $k$--tuples have near--optimal spectral gap for $k=\mathrm{poly}(n)$
We extend Friedman's theorem to show that, for any fixed $r>1$, a random $2r$--regular Schreier graph associated with the action of $r$ uniformly random permutations of $[n]$ on $k_{n}$--tuples of distinct elements in $[n]$ has a near--optimal spectral gap with high probability, provided $k_{n}\leq n^{\frac{1}{20}-ε}.$ Previously this was known only for $k$--tuples where $k$ is fixed. In fact, we prove the stronger result of strong convergence of random permutations in irreducible representations of quasi--exponential dimension. Along the way, we give a new bound for the expected stable irreducible character of a random permutation obtained via a word map, showing that $\mathbb{E}\left[χ^μ\left(w(σ_{1},\dots,σ_{r})\right)\right]=O\left(\frac{1}{\dimχ^μ}\right)=O\left(n^{-k}\right)$, where $k$ is the number of boxes outside the first row of the Young diagram $μ,$ solving one aspect of a conjecture of Hanany and Puder. We obtain this bound using an extension of Wise's $w$--cycle conjecture.

Restricted subgraphs of edge-colored graphs and applications
A properly edge-colored graph is a graph with a coloring of its edges such that no vertex is incident to two or more edges of the same color. A subgraph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colors. The problem of finding rainbow subgraphs or other restricted structures in edge-colored graphs has a long history, dating back to Euler's work on Latin squares. It has also proven to be a powerful method for studying several well-known questions in other areas. In this survey, we will provide a brief introduction to this topic, discuss several results in this area, and demonstrate their applications to problems in graph decomposition, additive combinatorics, theoretical computer science, and coding theory.

On the order of 4-dimensional regular polytope numbers
In light of Kim's conjecture on regular polytopes of dimension four, which is a generalization of Waring's problem, we establish asymptotic formulas for representing any sufficiently large integer as a sum of numbers in the form of those regular 4-polytopes. Moreover, we are able to obtain a more general result of the asymptotics for any degree-four polynomial $f$ satisfying $f(0)=0$ and $f(1)=1$.

The number of descendants in a preferential attachment graph
We study the number $X^{(n)}$ of vertices that can be reached from the last added vertex $n$ via a directed path (the descendants) in the standard preferential attachment graph. In this model, vertices are sequentially added, each born with outdegree $m\ge 2$; the endpoint of each outgoing edge is chosen among previously added vertices with probability proportional to the current degree of the vertex plus some number $ρ$. We show that $X^{(n)}/n^ν$ converges in distribution as $n\to\infty$, where $ν$ depends on both $m$ and $ρ$, and the limiting distribution is given by a product of a constant factor and the $(1-ν)$-th power of a Gamma(m/(m-1),1) variable. The proof uses a Pólya urn representation of preferential attachment graphs, and the arguments of Janson (2024) where the same problem was studied in uniform attachment graphs. Further results, including convergence of all moments and analogues for the version with possible self-loops are provided.

Combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the causal set d'Alembertian
The causal set theory d'Alembertian has rational coefficients for which alternating expressions are known. Here, a combinatorial interpretation of these numbers is given.

The positive orthogonal Grassmannian
The Plücker positive region $\mathrm{OGr}_+(k,2k)$ of the orthogonal Grassmannian emerged as the positive geometry behind the ABJM scattering amplitudes. In this paper we initiate the study of the positive orthogonal Grassmannian $\mathrm{OGr}_+(k,n)$ for general values of $k,n$. We determine the boundary structure of the quadric $\mathrm{OGr}_+(1,n)$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}_{+}$ and show that it is a positive geometry. We show that $\mathrm{OGr}_+(k,2k+1)$ is isomorphic to $\mathrm{OGr}_+(k+1, 2k+2)$ and connect its combinatorial structure to matchings on $[2k+2]$. Finally, we show that in the case $n>2k+1$, the \emph{positroid cells} of $\mathrm{Gr}_+(k,n)$ do not induce a CW cell decomposition of $\mathrm{OGr}_+(k,n)$.

Slit-slide-sew bijections for oriented planar maps
We construct growth bijections for bipolar oriented planar maps and for Schnyder woods. These give direct combinatorial proofs of several counting identities for these objects. Our method mainly uses two ingredients. First, a slit-slide-sew operation, which consists in slightly sliding a map along a well-chosen path. Second, the study of the orbits of natural rerooting operations on the considered classes of oriented maps.

Remarks on the countable case of the Unfriendly Partition Problem
The Unfriendly Partition Problem asks whether it is possible to split the vertex set of an infinite graph $G$ into two parts so that every vertex has at least as many neighbors in the other part than on its own. Despite the uncountable counterexamples provided by Milner and Shelah in 1990, this question still has no solution for graphs on countably many vertices. Under this hypothesis, our main result claims that such a bipartition exists if the rays of $G$ do not pass through infinitely many vertices of finite degree and infinitely many vertices of infinite degree simultaneously. In particular, for the class of countable graphs, we generalize previous results due to Aharoni, Milner and Prikry and due to Bruhn, Diestel, Georgakopolous and Sprüssel.

Planar rooted line arrangements and an operad for factorized scattering
We introduce two topological non-$Σ$ operad structures on planar line arrangements subject to a certain geometric order condition, ensuring a well-defined notion of particle ordering on a distinguished line. This is interpreted in terms of scattering diagrams in purely elastic (1+1)-dimensional theories. We discuss a possible approach to factorized scattering in operadic terms.

Quadratically enriched binomial coefficients over a finite field
We compute an analogue of Pascal's triangle enriched in bilinear forms over a finite field. This gives an arithmetically meaningful count of the ways to choose $j$ ring homomorphisms into an algebraic closure from an étale extension of degree $n$. We also compute a quadratic twist. These (twisted) enriched binomial coefficients are defined in joint work of Brugallé and the second-named author, building on work of Serre. Such binomial coefficients support curve counting results over non-algebraically closed fields, using $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory.

Følner, Banach, and translation density are equal and other new results about density in left amenable semigroups
In any semigroup $S$ satisfying the Strong Folner Condition, there are three natural notions of density for a subset $A$ of $S$: Folner density $d(A)$, Banach density $d^*(A)$, and translation density $d_t(A)$. If $S$ is commutative or left cancellative, it is known that these three notions coincide. We shall show that these notions coincide for every semigroup $S$ which satisfies the Strong Folner Condition. Using this fact, we solve a problem that has been open for decades, showing that the set of ultrafilters every member of which has positive Folner density is a two sided ideal of $βS$. We also show that, if $S$ is a left amenable semigroup, then the set of ultrafilters every member of which has positive Banach density is a two sided ideal of $βS$. We investigate the density properties of subsets of $S$ in the case in which the minimal left ideals of the Stone-Čech compactification $βS$ are singletons. This occurs in many familiar examples, including all semilattices and all semigroups which have a right zero. We show that this is equivalent to the statement that $S$ satisfies the Strong Folner Condition and that, for every subset $A$ of $S$, $d(A)\in \{0,1\}$. We also examine the relation between the density properties of two semigroups when one is a quotient of the other. The Folner density of a subset of $S$ is always determined by some Folner net in $S$. We show that an arbitrary Folner net in $S$ determines the density of all of the subsets of $S$. And we prove that, if $S$ and $T$ are left amenable semigroups, then $d^*(A\times B)=d^*(A)d^*(B)$ for every subset $A$ of $S$ and every subset $B$ of $T$.
Subset Selection Problems in Planar Point Sets
Given a finite set satisfying condition $\mathcal{A}$, the subset selection problem asks, how large of a subset satisfying condition $\mathcal{B}$ can we find? We make progress on three instances of subset selection problems in planar point sets. Let $n,s\in\mathbb{N}$ with $n\geq s$, and let $P\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2$ be a set of $n$ points, where at most $s$ points lie on the same line. Firstly, we select a general position subset of $P$, i.e., a subset containing no $3$ points on the same line. This problem was proposed by Erdős under the regime when $s$ is a constant. For $s$ being non-constant, we give new lower and upper bounds on the maximum size of such a subset. In particular, we show that in the worst case such a set can have size at most $O(n/s)$ when $n^{1/3}\leq s\leq n$ and $O(n^{5/6+o(1)}/\sqrt{s})$ when $3\leq s\leq n^{1/3}$. Secondly, we select a monotone general position subset of $P$, that is, a subset in general position where the points are ordered from left to right and their $y$-coordinates are either non-decreasing or non-increasing. We present bounds on the maximum size of such a subset. In particular, when $s=Θ(\sqrt{n})$, our upper and lower bounds differ only by a logarithmic factor. Lastly, we select a subset of $P$ with pairwise distinct slopes. This problem was initially studied by Erdős, Graham, Ruzsa, and Taylor on the grid. We show that for $s=O(\sqrt{n})$ such a subset of size $Ω((n/\log{s})^{1/3})$ can always be found in $P$. When $s=Θ(\sqrt{n})$, this matches a lower bound given by Zhang on the grid. As for the upper bound, we show that in the worst case such a subset has size at most $O(\sqrt{n})$ for $2\leq s\leq n^{3/8}$ and $O((n/s)^{4/5})$ for $n^{3/8}\leq s=O(\sqrt{n})$. The proofs use a wide range of tools such as incidence geometry, probabilistic methods, the hypergraph container method, and additive combinatorics.

Euler-type recurrences for $t$-color and $t$-regular partition functions
We give Euler-like recursive formulas for the $t$-colored partition function when $t=2$ or $t=3,$ as well as for all $t$-regular partition functions. In particular, we derive an infinite family of ``triangular number" recurrences for the $3$-colored partition function. Our proofs are inspired by the recent work of Gomez, Ono, Saad, and Singh on the ordinary partition function and make extensive use of $q$-series identities for $(q;q)_{\infty}$ and $(q;q)_{\infty}^3.$

Minimum degree conditions for graph rigidity
We study minimum degree conditions that guarantee that an $n$-vertex graph is rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$. For small values of $d$, we obtain a tight bound: for $d = O(\sqrt{n})$, every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(n+d)/2 - 1$ is rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$. For larger values of $d$, we achieve an approximate result: for $d = O(n/{\log^2}{n})$, every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(n+2d)/2 - 1$ is rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$. This bound is tight up to a factor of two in the coefficient of $d$. As a byproduct of our proof, we also obtain the following result, which may be of independent interest: for $d = O(n/{\log^2}{n})$, every $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $d$ has pseudoachromatic number at least $d+1$; namely, the vertex set of such a graph can be partitioned into $d+1$ subsets such that there is at least one edge between each pair of subsets. This is tight.
On the Number of Vertices in a Hyperplane Section of a Polytope
We study the slices or sections of a convex polytope by affine hyperplanes. We present results on two key problems: First, we provide tight bounds on the maximum number of vertices attainable by a hyperplane slice of $d$-polytope (a sort of upper bound theorem) and discuss a new algorithm to find all sections. Second, we investigate the sequence of numbers of vertices produced by the different slices over all possible hyperplanes and analyze the gaps that arise in that sequence. We study these sequences for three-dimensional polytopes and for hypercubes. Our results were obtained with the help of large computational experiments, and we report on new data generated for hypercubes.

Latin Squares whose transversals share many entries
We prove that, for all even $n\geq10$, there exists a latin square of order $n$ with at least one transversal, yet all transversals coincide on $ \big\lfloor n/6 \big\rfloor$ entries. These latin squares have at least $ 19 n^2/36 + O(n)$ transversal-free entries. We also prove that for all odd $m\geq 3$, there exists a latin square of order $n=3m$ divided into nine $m\times m$ subsquares, where every transversal hits each of these subsquares at least once.

An Extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem
In combinatorics, Pólya's Enumeration Theorem is a powerful tool for solving a wide range of counting problems, including the enumeration of groups, graphs, and chemical compounds. In this paper, we present an extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem. As an application, we derive a formula that expresses the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates (where $n\leq m$) as a variant of the cycle index polynomial of the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$. This result resolves a problem posed by Amdeberhan in 2012.

Points on Rational Normal Curves and the ABCT Variety
Published in Special volume on Positive Geometry, Le Matematiche 80 (1) (2025), 103-122 • Search Publication
The ABCT variety is defined as the closure of the image of $G(2,n)$ under the Veronese map. We realize the ABCT variety $V(3,n)$ as the determinantal variety of a vector bundle morphism. We use this to give a recursive formula for the fundamental class of $V(3,n)$. As an application, we show that special Schubert coefficients of this class are given by Eulerian numbers, matching a formula by Cachazo-He-Yuan. On the way to this, we prove that the variety of configuration of points on a common divisor on a smooth variety is reduced and irreducible, generalizing a result of Caminata-Moon-Schaffler.

Arborescences of Random Covering Graphs
A rooted arborescence of a directed graph is a spanning tree directed towards a particular vertex. A recent work of Chepuri et al. showed that the arborescences of a covering graph of a directed graph G are closely related to the arborescences of G. In this paper, we study the weighted sum of arborescences of a random covering graph and give a formula for the expected value, resolving a conjecture of Chepuri et al.
Fast construction of self-avoiding polygons and efficient evaluation of closed walk fractions on the square lattice
We build upon a recent theoretical breakthrough by employing novel algorithms to accurately compute the fractions $F_p$ of all closed walks on the infinite square lattice whose the last erased loop corresponds is any one of the $762, 207, 869, 373$ self-avoiding polygons $p$ of length at most 38. Prior to this work, only 6 values of $F_p$ had been calculated in the literature. The main computational engine uses efficient algorithms for both the construction of self-avoiding polygons and the precise evaluation of the lattice Green's function. Based on our results, we propose two conjectures: one regarding the asymptotic behavior of sums of $F_p$, and another concerning the value of $F_p$ when $p$ is a large square. We provide strong theoretical arguments supporting the second conjecture. Furthermore, the algorithms we introduce are not limited to the square lattice and can, in principle, be extended to any vertex-transitive infinite lattice. In establishing this extension, we resolve two open questions related to the triangular lattice Green's function.
