We study two kinds of generalizations of symmetric block designs to higher dimensions, the so-called $\mathcal{C}$-cubes and $\mathcal{P}$-cubes. For small parameters, all examples up to equivalence are determined by computer calculations. Known properties of automorphisms of symmetric designs are extended to autotopies of $\mathcal{P}$-cubes, while counterexamples are found for $\mathcal{C}$-cubes. An algorithm for the classification of $\mathcal{P}$-cubes with prescribed autotopy groups is developed and used to construct more examples. A bound on the dimension of difference sets for $\mathcal{P}$-cubes is proved and shown to be tight in elementary abelian groups. The construction is generalized to arbitrary groups by introducing regular sets of (anti)automorphisms.
A unital in the generalized hexagon of order two, and an exceptional isomorphism between finite groups of Lie type
We construct a model of the Hermitian unital of order 3 (obtained from the non-degenerate hermitian form in three variables over the field of order 9) inside the octonion algebra over the field of order 2. This construction is invariant under the automorphism group of that algebra, and explains the known isomorphism from the finite group of exceptional Lie type onto the group of semi-similitudes of the hermitian form.
Minimal pentagulations of $n$-gons
A planar graph $G$ is called a pentagulation of an $n$-gon ($n\geq$ is an integer) if all faces of $G$ are pentagons, except one, which is an $n$-gon. A $3$-connected pentagulation $G$ of an $n$-gon is called minimal if it has the smallest number of pentagons among all such $3$-connected pentagulations. It is known that minimal pentagulations of the $3$-gon and $4$-gon contain 15 and 14 pentagons, respectively. We determined all minimal pentagulations of $n$-gons for all $n$ such that $3\leq n\leq 12$ using computer calculations. The calculations employed the plantri package, which generates all planar triangulations for a given number of vertices. We also present several open questions on this topic.
A conjecture on descents, inversions and the weak order
In this article, we discuss the notion of partition of elements in an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$: a partition of an element $w$ is a subset $\mathcal P\subseteq W$ such that the left inversion set of $w$ is the disjoint union of the left inversion set of the elements in $\mathcal P$. Partitions of elements of $W$ arises in the study of the Belkale-Kumar product on the cohomology $H^*(X,\mathbb Z)$, where $X$ is the complete flag variety of any complex semi-simple algebraic group. Partitions of elements in the symmetric group $\mathcal S_n$ are also related to the {\em Babington-Smith model} in algebraic statistics or to the simplicial faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone.
We state the conjecture that the number of right descents of $w$ is the sum of the number of right descents of the elements of $\mathcal P$ and prove that this conjecture holds in the cases of symmetric groups (type $A$) and hyperoctahedral groups (type $B$).
Random Turán Problems for $K_{s,t}$ Expansions
Let $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$ denote the $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained from the graph $K_{s,t}$ by inserting $r-2$ new vertices inside each edge of $K_{s,t}$. We prove essentially tight bounds on the size of a largest $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$-subgraph of the random $r$-uniform hypergraph $G_{n,p}^r$ whenever $r\ge 2s/3+2$, giving the first random Turán results for expansions that go beyond a natural "tight-tree barrier." In addition to this, our methods yield optimal supersaturation results for $K_{s,t}^{(3)}$ for sufficiently dense host hypergraphs, which may be of independent interest.
Acyclic List Colouring Locally Planar Graphs
A (vertex) colouring of graph is \emph{acyclic} if it contains no bicoloured cycle. In 1979, Borodin proved that planar graphs are acyclically 5-colourable. In 2010, Kawarabayashi and Mohar proved that locally planar graphs are acyclically 7-colourable. In 2002, Borodin, Fon-Der-Flaass, Kostochka, Raspaud, and Sopena proved that planar graphs are acyclically 7-list-colourable. We prove that locally planar graphs are acyclically 9-list-colourable\textemdash no bound for acyclic list colouring locally planar graphs for any fixed number of colours was previously known.
Helmholtz-Hodge Decomposition on Graphs
We propose a definition of the curl of a vector field X on a finite simple graph as the projection of X onto the orthogonal complement of circulation-free vector fields, where a vector field is circulation-free provided its line integral around every simple circuit vanishes. We justify the definition by observing that X and curl X have the same circulation and curl of the gradient and divergence of the curl vanish. This shows the gradient, curl, and divergence operators form an exact sequence, in analogy with the classical case of vector fields on Euclidean domains and yields the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition of a vector field on a graph as the sum of a gradient, a curl, and a harmonic field. Along the way, we also prove analogues of the divergence theorem, Green's identities, and Helmholtz's theorem. A consequence of our definition is that the curl is a non-local operator, in sharp contrast to the classical case and existing notions of curl on a graph.
Fixed points of reverse Hessenberg convolution varieties
Associated to any unit interval graph, Syu Kato introduced a variety which gives (via the geometric Satake correspondence) a graded $GL_m$ representation whose character is the chromatic quasisymmetric polynomial of the graph. In this short note, we reprove Kato's result by analyzing the fixed points of his varieties.

We investigate Mellin integrals of products of hyperplanes, raised to an individual power each. We refer to the resulting functions as combinatorial correlators. We investigate their behavior when moving the hyperplanes individually. To encode these functions as holonomic functions in the constant terms of the hyperplanes, we aim to construct a holonomic annihilating $D$-ideal purely in terms of the hyperplane arrangement.
Local limit theorem for joint subgraph counts
Extending a previous result of the first two authors, we prove a local limit theorem for the joint distribution of subgraph counts in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$. This limit can be described as a nonlinear transformation of a multivariate normal distribution, where the components of the multivariate normal correspond to the graph factors of Janson. As an application, we show a number of results concerning the existence and enumeration of proportional graphs and related concepts, answering various questions of Janson and collaborators in the affirmative.
Polynomial Inscriptions
We prove that for every smooth Jordan curve $γ\subset \mathbb{C}$ and for every set $Q \subset \mathbb{C}$ of six concyclic points, there exists a non-constant quadratic polynomial $p \in \mathbb{C}[z]$ such that $p(Q) \subset γ$. The proof relies on a theorem of Fukaya and Irie. We also prove that if $Q$ is the union of the vertex sets of two concyclic regular $n$-gons, there exists a non-constant polynomial $p \in \mathbb{C}[z]$ of degree at most $n-1$ such that $p(Q) \subset γ$. The proof is based on a computation in Floer homology. These results support a conjecture about which point sets $Q \subset \mathbb{C}$ admit a polynomial inscription of a given degree into every smooth Jordan curve $γ$.
Arbitrary Spectral Edge of Regular Graphs
We prove that for each $d\geq 3$ and $k\geq 2$, the set of limit points of the first $k$ eigenvalues of sequences of $d$-regular graphs is
\[
\{(μ_1,\dots,μ_k): d=μ_1\geq \dots\geq μ_{k}\geq2\sqrt{d-1}\}.
\] The result for $k=2$ was obtained by Alon and Wei, and our result confirms a conjecture of theirs. Our proof uses an infinite random graph sampled from a distribution that generalizes the random regular graph distribution. To control the spectral behavior of this infinite object, we show that Huang and Yau's proof of Friedman's theorem bounding the second eigenvalue of a random regular graph generalizes to this model. We also bound the trace of the non-backtracking operator, as was done in Bordenave's separate proof of Friedman's theorem.
A Short Proof of the Existence of $K_q^r$-absorbers
We codify a short self-contained proof of the existence of $K_q^r$-absorbers implicit in Keevash's original proof of the Existence Conjecture. Combining this with the work of the first and third authors in yields a proof of the Existence Conjecture for Combinatorial Designs that is not reliant on the construction of $K_q^r$-absorbers by Glock, Kühn, Lo, and Osthus.
Building monomial ideals with fixed betti numbers
Motivated by the fact that as the number of generators of an ideal grows so does the complexity of calculating relations among the generators, this paper identifies collections of monomial ideals with a growing number of generators which have predictable free resolutions. We use elementary collapses from discrete homotopy theory to construct infinitely many monomial ideals, with an arbitrary number of generators, which have similar or the same betti numbers. We show that the Cohen-Macaulay property in each unmixed (pure) component of the ideal is preserved as the ideal is expanded.
The weak Lefschetz properties of artinian monomial algebras associated to certain tadpole graphs
Given a simple graph $G$, the artinian monomial algebra associated to $G$, denoted by $A(G)$, is defined by the edge ideal of $G$ and the squares of the variables. In this article, we classify some tadpole graphs $G$ for which $A(G)$ has or fails the weak Lefschetz property.
When entropy meets Turán: new proofs and hypergraph Turán results
In this paper, we provide a new proof of a density version of Turán's theorem. We also rephrase both the theorem and the proof using entropy. With the entropic formulation, we show that some naturally defined entropic quantity is closely connected to other common quantities such as Lagrangian and spectral radius. In addition, we also determine the Turán density for a new family of hypergraphs, which we call tents. Our result can be seen as a new generalization of Mubayi's result on the extended cliques.
Hamiltonicity of Transitive Graphs Whose Automorphism Group Has $\Z_{p}$ as Commutator Subgroups
In 1982, Durnberger proved that every connected Cayley graph of a finite group with a commutator subgroup of prime order contains a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we extend this result to the infinite case. Additionally, we generalize this result to a broader class of infinite graphs $X$, where the automorphism group of $X$ contains a transitive subgroup $G$ with a cyclic commutator subgroup of prime order.
Commuting Pairs in Quasigroups
A quasigroup is a pair $(Q, *)$ where $Q$ is a non-empty set and $*$ is a binary operation on $Q$ such that for every $(a, b) \in Q^2$ there exists a unique $(x, y) \in Q^2$ such that $a*x=b=y*a$. Let $(Q, *)$ be a quasigroup. A pair $(x, y) \in Q^2$ is a commuting pair of $(Q, *)$ if $x * y = y * x$. Recently, it has been shown that every rational number in the interval $(0, 1]$ can be attained as the proportion of ordered pairs that are commuting in some quasigroup. For every positive integer $n$ we establish the set of all integers $k$ such that there is a quasigroup of order $n$ with exactly $k$ commuting pairs. This allows us to determine, for a given rational $q \in (0, 1]$, the spectrum of positive integers $n$ for which there is a quasigroup of order $n$ whose proportion of commuting pairs is equal to $q$.
Solutions to the linkage conjecture in tournaments
A digraph $D$ is $k$-linked if for every $2k$-tuple $ x_1,\ldots , x_k, y_1, \ldots , y_k$ of distinct vertices in $D$, there exist $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint paths $P_1,\ldots, P_k$ such that $P_i$ starts at $x_i$ and ends at $y_i$, $i\in [k]$. In 2015, Pokrovskiy conjectured that there exists a function $g(k)$ such that every $2k$-connected tournament with minimum in-degree and minimum out-degree at least $g(k)$ is $k$-linked in [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B 115 (2015) 339--347]. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by constructing a family of counterexamples. The counterexamples also provide a negative answer to the question raised by Girão, Popielarz, Snyder in [Combinatorica 41 (2021) 815--837]. Further, we prove that every $(2k+1)$-connected semicomplete digraph $D$ with minimum out-degree at least $ 10^7k^{4}$ is $k$-linked, which refines and generalizes the early result of Girão, Popielarz, Snyder.
A special balancing game, Victor Grinberg's question
In a vector balancing game, on step $k$ player 1 chooses a unit vector $v_k$ and player 2 chooses a sign $\varepsilon_k\in \{-1,1\}$, and the position after $n$ steps is $z_n=\sum_1^n\varepsilon_k v_k$. Player 1's target is to make $\|z_n\|$ large and player 2's target is to make it small. We consider a special case of this game.
