The Lovász-Cherkassky theorem in infinite graphs
Infinite generalizations of theorems in finite combinatorics were initiated by Erdős due to his famous Erdős-Menger conjecture (now known as the Aharoni-Berger theorem) that extends Menger's theorem to infinite graphs in a structural way. We prove a generalization of this manner of the classical result about packing edge-disjoint $ T $-paths in an ``inner Eulerian'' setting obtained by Lovász and Cherkassky independently in the '70s.

Best Complete Approximations of Preference Relations
We investigate the problem of approximating an incomplete preference relation $\succsim$ on a finite set by a complete preference relation. We aim to obtain this approximation in such a way that the choices on the basis of two preferences, one incomplete, the other complete, have the smallest possible discrepancy in the aggregate. To this end, we use the top-difference metric on preferences, and define a best complete approximation of $\succsim$ as a complete preference relation nearest to $\succsim$ relative to this metric. We prove that such an approximation must be a maximal completion of $\succsim$, and that it is, in fact, any one completion of $\succsim$ with the largest index. Finally, we use these results to provide a sufficient condition for the best complete approximation of a preference to be its canonical completion. This leads to closed-form solutions to the best approximation problem in the case of several incomplete preference relations of interest.

A Classification of Asymptotic Behaviors of Green Functions of Random Walks in the Quadrant
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper investigates the asymptotic behavior of Green functions associated to partially homogeneous random walks in the quadrant $Z_+^2$. There are four possible distributions for the jumps of these processes, depending on the location of the starting point: in the interior, on the two positive axes of the boundary, and at the origin $(0,0)$. With mild conditions on the positive jumps of the random walk, which can be unbounded, a complete analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the Green function of the random walk killed at $(0,0)$ is achieved. The main result is that {\em eight} regions of the set of parameters determine completely the possible limiting behaviors of Green functions of these Markov chains. These regions are defined by a set of relations for several characteristics of the distributions of the jumps. In the transient case, a description of the Martin boundary is obtained and in the positive recurrent case, our results give the exact limiting behavior of the invariant distribution of a state whose norm goes to infinity along some asymptotic direction in the quadrant. These limit theorems extend results of the literature obtained, up to now, essentially for random walks whose jump sizes are either $0$ or $1$ on each coordinate. Our approach relies on a combination of several methods: probabilistic representations of solutions of analytical equations, Lyapounov functions, convex analysis, methods of homogeneous random walks, and complex analysis arguments.

Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles and Gromov--Witten theory relative to at most three points
Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles are standard Hurwitz numbers with simple branch points replaced by completed cycles. In fact, simple branch points correspond to completed $2$-cycles. Okounkov and Pandharipande have established the remarkable GW/H correspondence, saying that the stationary sectors of the Gromov--Witten theory relative to $r$ points equal Hurwitz numbers with $r$ branch points besides the completed cycles. However, from the viewpoint of computation, known results for Hurwitz numbers (standard or with completed cycles) are mainly for $r\leq 2$. It is hard to obtain explicit formulas and then discuss the structural properties for the cases $r>2$. In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the case $r=3$ and uncover a number of structural properties of these Hurwitz numbers. For instance, we discover a piecewise polynomiality with respect to the orders of the completed cycles in addition to the parts of the profiles of branch points as usual, we show that certain hook-shape Hurwitz numbers are building blocks of all our Hurwitz numbers, and we prove an analogue of the celebrated $λ_g$-conjecture.

Chromatic numbers for facet colouring of some generalised associahedra
The chromatic number related to a colouring of facets of certain classes of generalised associahedra is studied. The exact values are obtained for permutohedra, associahedra and simple permutoassociahedra, while lower and upper bounds are established for cyclohedra and stellohedra. The asymptotic values of the chromatic numbers for associahedra, cyclohedra and simple permutoassociahedra are given.

Posets for $F$-polynomials in cluster algebras from surfaces
We prove a simple formula for arbitrary cluster variables in the marked surfaces model. As part of the formula, we associate a labeled poset to each tagged arc, such that the associated $F$-polynomial is a weighted sum of order ideals. Each element of the poset has a weight, and the weight of an ideal is the product of the weights of the elements of the ideal. In the unpunctured case, the weight on each element is a single $\hat{y}_i$, in the usual sense of principal coefficients. In the presence of punctures, some elements may have weights of the form $\hat{y}_i/\hat{y}_j$. Our search for such a formula was inspired by the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Distributive Lattices combined with work of Gregg Musiker, Ralf Schiffler, and Lauren Williams that, in some cases, organized the terms of the $F$-polynomial into a distributive lattice. The proof consists of a simple and poset-theoretically natural argument in a special case, followed by a hyperbolic geometry argument using a cover of the surface to prove the general case.
Singmaster-type results for Stirling numbers and some related diophantine equations
Motivated by the work of David Singmaster, we study the number of times an integer can appear among the Stirling numbers of both kinds. We provide an upper bound for the occurrences of all the positive integers, and present certain questions for further study. Some numerical results and conjectures concerning the related diohantine equations are collected.
On polynomials of small range sum
Published • View PublicationBIB
In order to reprove an old result of Rédei's on the number of directions determined by a set of cardinality $p$ in $\mathbb{F}_p^2$, Somlai proved that the non-constant polynomials over the field $\mathbb{F}_p$ whose range sums are equal to $p$ are of degree at least $\frac{p-1}{2}$. Here the summand in the range sum are considered as integers from the interval $[0,p-1]$. In this paper we characterise all of these polynomials having degree exactly $\frac{p-1}{2}$, if $p$ is large enough. As a consequence, for the same set of primes we re-establish the characterisation of sets with few determined directions due to Lovász and Schrijver using discrete Fourier analysis.

On irredundance coloring and irredundance compelling coloring of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Irredundance coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring in which there exists a maximal irredundant set $R$ such that all the vertices of $R$ have different colors. The minimum number of colors required for an irredundance coloring of $G$ is called the irredundance chromatic number of $G$, and is denoted by $χ_{i}(G)$. Irredundance compelling coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring of $G$ in which every rainbow committee (the set containing a vertex of each color) is an irredundant set of $G$. The maximum number of colors required for an irredundance compelling coloring of $G$ is called the irredundance compelling chromatic number of $G$, and is denoted by $χ_{irc}(G)$. In this paper, we make a detailed study on $χ_{i}(G)$, $χ_{irc}(G)$ and its relation to other coloring and domination parameters
Critical trees are neither too short nor too fat

We establish lower tail bounds for the height, and upper tail bounds for the width, of critical size-conditioned Bienaymé trees. Our bounds are optimal at this level of generality. We also obtain precise asymptotics for offspring distributions within the domain of attraction of a Cauchy distribution, under a local regularity assumption. Finally, we pose some questions on the possible asymptotic behaviours of the height and width of critical size-conditioned Bienaymé trees.
The Density Formula: One Lemma to Bound Them All
We introduce the Density Formula for (topological) drawings of graphs in the plane or on the sphere, which relates the number of edges, vertices, crossings, and sizes of cells in the drawing. We demonstrate its capability by providing several applications: we prove tight upper bounds on the edge density of various beyond-planar graph classes, including so-called $k$-planar graphs with $k=1,2$, fan-crossing / fan-planar graphs, $k$-bend RAC-graphs with $k=0,1,2$, quasiplanar graphs, and $k^+$-real face graphs. In some cases ($1$-bend and $2$-bend RAC-graphs and fan-crossing / fan-planar graphs), we thereby obtain the first tight upper bounds on the edge density of the respective graph classes. In other cases, we give new streamlined and significantly shorter proofs for bounds that were already known in the literature. Thanks to the Density Formula, all of our proofs are mostly elementary counting and mostly circumvent the typical intricate case analysis found in earlier proofs. Further, in some cases (simple and non-homotopic quasiplanar graphs), our alternative proofs using the Density Formula lead to the first tight lower bound examples.
Problems on infinite sumset configurations in the integers and beyond
Published • View PublicationBIB
In contrast to finite arithmetic configurations, relatively little is known about which infinite patterns can be found in every set of natural numbers with positive density. Building on recent advances showing infinite sumsets can be found, we explore numerous open problems and obstructions to finding other infinite configurations in every set of natural numbers with positive density.
Absolute retracts of reflexive oriented graphs: the role of the MacNeille completion
We characterize the absolute retracts in the category of reflexive oriented graphs, that is, antisymmetric reflexive graphs, where morphisms between objects preserve arcs (which may be sent to loops). Here we show, by correcting a much earlier attempt at a proof, that a reflexive oriented graph is an absolute retract if and only if it is indeed a retract of some (direct) product of reflexive oriented zigzags (which are concatenations of reflexive oriented paths). Absolute retracts are therefore necessarily acyclic. In contrast to other categories of graphs and ordered sets, not every acyclic oriented graph can be embedded isometrically into some absolute retract. Embedding involves isometry with respect to the zig-zag distances forming a particular "dual quantale", which is a complete lattice of certain sets of words over the alphabet $\{+, -\}$, endowed with an additional monoid operation (viz., compound concatenation of sets of words) and an involution (interchanging $+$ and $- $ and then mirroring words). As reflexive oriented zigzags have MacNeille-closed distances, so do their products and retracts. So, the category of reflexive oriented graphs and its full subcategory of reflexive acyclic graphs do not have enough injectives, as the injective objects coincide with the absolute retracts.

Triviality of critical Fortuin-Kasteleyn decorated planar maps for $q>4$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider infinite random planar maps decorated by the critical Fortuin-Kasteleyn model with parameter $q>4$. The paper demonstrates that when appropriately rescaled, these maps converge in law to the infinite continuum random tree as pointed metric-measure spaces, that is, with respect to the local Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology. Furthermore, we also show that these maps do not admit any Fortuin-Kasteleyn loops with a macroscopic graph distance diameter. Our proof is based on Scott Sheffield's hamburger-cheeseburger bijection.

Compact Matrix Quantum Group Equivariant Neural Networks
Group equivariant neural networks have proven effective in modelling a wide range of tasks where the data lives in a classical geometric space and exhibits well-defined group symmetries. However, these networks are not suitable for learning from data that lives in a non-commutative geometry, described formally by non-commutative $C^{*}$-algebras, since the $C^{*}$-algebra of continuous functions on a compact matrix group is commutative. To address this limitation, we derive the existence of a new type of equivariant neural network, called compact matrix quantum group equivariant neural networks, which encode symmetries that are described by compact matrix quantum groups. We characterise the weight matrices that appear in these neural networks for the easy compact matrix quantum groups, which are defined by set partitions. As a result, we obtain new characterisations of equivariant weight matrices for some compact matrix groups that have not appeared previously in the machine learning literature.

Root and weight semigroup rings for signed posets
We consider a pair of semigroups associated to a signed poset, called the root semigroup and the weight semigroup, and their semigroup rings, $R_P^\mathrm{rt}$ and $R_P^\mathrm{wt}$, respectively. Theorem 4.1.5 gives generators for the toric ideal of affine semigroup rings associated to signed posets and, more generally, oriented signed graphs. These are the subrings of Laurent polynomials generated by monomials of the form $t_i^{\pm 1},t_i^{\pm 2},t_i^{\pm 1}t_j^{\pm 1}$. This result appears to be new and generalizes work of Boussicault, Féray, Lascoux and Reiner, of Gitler, Reyes, and Villarreal, and of Villarreal. Theorem 4.2.12 shows that strongly planar signed posets $P$ have rings $R_P^\mathrm{rt}$, $R_{P^{\scriptscriptstyle\vee}}$ which are complete intersections, with Corollary 4.2.20 showing how to compute $Ψ_P$ in this case. Theorem 5.2.3 gives a Gröbner basis for the toric ideal of $R_P^{\mathrm{wt}}$ in type B, generalizing Proposition 6.4 of Féray and Reiner. Theorems 5.3.10 and 5.3.1 give two characterizations (via forbidden subposets versus via inductive constructions) of the situation where this Gröbner basis gives a complete intersection presentation for its initial ideal, generalizing Theorems 10.5 and 10.6 of Féray and Reiner.

Deformations and q-convolutions. Old and new results
This paper is the survey of some of our results related to $q$-deformations of the Fock spaces and related to $q$-convolutions for probability measures on the real line $\mathbb{R}$. The main idea is done by the combinatorics of moments of the measures and related $q$-cumulants of different types. The main and interesting $q$-convolutions are related to classical continuous (discrete) $q$-Hermite polynomial. Among them are classical ($q=1$) convolutions, the case $q=0$, gives the free and Boolean relations, and the new class of $q$-analogue of classical convolutions done by Carnovole, Koornwinder, Biane, Anshelovich, and Kula. The paper contains many questions and problems related to the positivity of that class of $q$-convolutions. The main result is the construction of Brownian motion related to $q$-Discrete Hermite polynomial of type I.

On the Connectivity of the Vietoris-Rips Complex of a Hypercube Graph
We bring in the techniques of independence complexes and the notion of total dominating sets of a graph to bear on the question of the connectivity of the Vietoris-Rips complexes $VR(Q_n; r)$ of an $n$-hypercube graph. We obtain a lower bound for the connectivity of $VR(Q_n; r)$ for an arbitrary $n$-dimension hypercube and at all scale parameters $r$. The obtained bounds disprove the conjecture of Shukla that $\VR$ is $r$-connected.
