Identifiability of Points and Rigidity of Hypergraphs under Algebraic Constraints
The identifiability problem arises naturally in a number of contexts in mathematics and computer science. Specific instances include local or global rigidity of graphs and unique completability of partially-filled tensors subject to rank conditions. The identifiability of points on secant varieties has also been a topic of much research in algebraic geometry. It is often formulated as the problem of identifying a set of points satisfying a given set of algebraic relations. A key question then is to prove sufficient conditions for relations to guarantee the identifiability of the points.
This paper proposes a new general framework for capturing the identifiability problem when a set of algebraic relations has a combinatorial structure and develops tools to analyse the impact of the underlying combinatorics on the local or global identifiability of points. Our framework is built on the language of graph rigidity, where the measurements are Euclidean distances between two points, but applicable in the generality of hypergraphs with arbitrary algebraic measurements. We establish necessary and sufficient (hyper)graph theoretical conditions for identifiability by exploiting techniques from graph rigidity theory and algebraic geometry of secant varieties. In particular our work analyses combinatorially the effect of non-generic projections of secant varieties.
K-polynomials of multiplicity-free varieties
We describe the twisted $K$-polynomial of multiplicity-free varieties in a multiprojective setting. More precisely, for multiplicity-free varieties, we show that the support of the twisted $K$-polynomial is a generalized polymatroid. As applications, we show that the support of the Möbius function of a linear polymatroid is a generalized polymatroid, and we settle a conjecture of Monical, Tokcan and Yong regarding Grothendieck polynomials for the case of zero-one Schubert polynomials.
Rational tensegrities through the lens of toric geometry

A classical tensegrity model consists of an embedded graph in a vector space with rigid bars representing edges, and an assignment of a stress to every edge such that at every vertex of the graph the stresses sum up to zero. The tensegrity frameworks have been recently extended from the two dimensional graph case to the multidimensional setting. We study the multidimensional tensegrities using tools from toric geometry. For a given rational tensegrity framework $\mathcal{F}$, we construct a glued toric surface $X_\mathcal{F}$. We show that the abelian group of tensegrities on $\mathcal{F}$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of the Chow group $A^1(X_\mathcal{F};\QQ)$. In the case of planar frameworks, we show how to explicitly carry out the computation of tensegrities via classical tools in toric geometry.

We consider the global rigidity problem for bar-joint frameworks where each vertex is constrained to lie on a particular line in $\mathbb R^d$. In our setting we allow multiple vertices to be constrained to the same line. Under a mild assumption on the given set of lines we give a complete combinatorial characterisation of graphs that are generically globally rigid in this setting. This gives a $d$-dimensional extension of the well-known combinatorial characterisation of 1-dimensional global rigidity.

The Gelfand-Tsetlin and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes for the Grassmannians are defined, from the perspective of representation theory, to parametrize certain bases for highest weight irreducible modules. These polytopes are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannian and, in particular, the GT-polytope is an example of a string polytope. The polytopes admit a combinatorial description as the Stanley's order and chain polytopes of a certain poset, as shown by Ardila, Bliem and Salaza. We prove that these polytopes occur among matching field polytopes. Moreover, we show that they are related by a sequence of combinatorial mutations that passes only through matching field polytopes. As a result, we obtain a family of matching fields that give rise to toric degenerations for the Grassmannians. Moreover, all polytopes in the family are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians.

We study toric degenerations arising from Gröbner degenerations or the tropicalization of partial flag varieties. We produce a new family of toric degenerations of partial flag varieties whose combinatorics are governed by matching fields and combinatorial mutations of polytopes. We provide an explicit description of the polytopes associated with the resulting toric varieties in terms of matching field polytopes. These polytopes encode the combinatorial data of monomial degenerations of Plücker forms for the Grassmannians. We give a description of matching field polytopes of flag varieties as Minkowski sums and show that all such polytopes are normal. The polytopes we obtain are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for particular full-rank valuations for flag varieties. Furthermore, we study a certain explicitly-defined large family of matching field polytopes and prove that all polytopes in this family are connected by combinatorial mutations. Finally, we apply our methods to explicitly compute toric degenerations of small Grassmannians and flag varieties and obtain new families of toric degenerations.
Computing positroid cells in the Grassmannian of lines, their boundaries and their intersections
Positroids are families of matroids introduced by Postnikov in the study of non-negative Grassmannians. In particular, positroids enumerate a CW decomposition of the totally non-negative Grassmannian. Furthermore, Postnikov has identified several families of combinatorial objects in bijections with positroids. We will provide yet another characterization of positroids for Gr$_{\geq 0}(2,n)$, the Grassmannians of lines, in terms of certain graphs. We use this characterization to compute the dimension and the boundary of positroid cells. This also leads to a combinatorial description of the intersection of positroid cells, that is easily computable. Our techniques rely on determining different ways to enlarge a given collection of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ to represent the dependent sets of a positroid, that is the dependencies among the columns of a matrix with non-negative maximal minors. Furthermore, we provide an algorithm to compute all the maximal positroids contained in a set.

We prove that double Schubert polynomials have the Saturated Newton Polytope property. This settles a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan and Yong. Our ideas are motivated by the theory of multidegrees. We introduce a notion of standardization of ideals that enables us to study non-standard multigradings. This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen-Macaulay prime ideal, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.

Lattice Conditional Independence models are a class of models developed first for the Gaussian case in which a distributive lattice classifies all the conditional independence statements. The main result is that these models can equivalently be described via a transitive directed acyclic graph (TDAG) in which, as is normal for causal models, the conditional independence is in terms of conditioning on ancestors in the graph. We demonstrate that a parallel stream of research in algebra, the theory of Hibi ideals, not only maps directly to the LCI models but gives a vehicle to generalise the theory from the linear Gaussian case. Given a distributive lattice (i) each conditional independence statement is associated with a Hibi relation defined on the lattice, (ii) the directed graph is given by chains in the lattice which correspond to chains of conditional independence, (iii) the elimination ideal of product terms in the chains gives the Hibi ideal and (iv) the TDAG can be recovered from a special bipartite graph constructed via the Alexander dual of the Hibi ideal. It is briefly demonstrated that there are natural applications to statistical log-linear models, time series, and Shannon information flow.
Multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series

This paper is devoted to the study of multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series. For an $\mathbb{N}^s$-graded algebra $A$, we define and study its volume function $F_A:\mathbb{N}_+^s\to \mathbb{R}$, which computes the asymptotics of the Hilbert function of $A$. We relate the volume function $F_A$ to the volume of the fibers of the global Newton-Okounkov body $Δ(A)$ of $A$. Unlike the classical case of standard multigraded algebras, the volume function $F_A$ is not a polynomial in general. However, in the case when the algebra $A$ has a decomposable grading, we show that the volume function $F_A$ is a polynomial with non-negative coefficients. We then define mixed multiplicities in this case and provide a full characterization for their positivity. Furthermore, we apply our results on multigraded algebras to multigraded linear series.
Our work recovers and unifies recent developments on mixed multiplicities. In particular, we recover results on the existence of mixed multiplicities for (not necessarily Noetherian) graded families of ideals and on the positivity of the multidegrees of multiprojective varieties.

We study standard monomial bases for Richardson varieties inside the flag variety. In general, writing down a standard monomial basis for a Richardson variety can be challenging, as it involves computing so-called defining chains or key tableaux. However, for a certain family of Richardson varieties, indexed by compatible permutations, we provide a very direct and straightforward combinatorial rule for writing down a standard monomial basis. We apply this result to the study of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties. In particular, we provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside flag varieties.

Richardson varieties are obtained as intersections of Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties. We provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside Grassmannians by studying Gröbner degenerations of their corresponding ideals. These degenerations are parametrised by block diagonal matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels-Zelevinsky. We associate a weight vector to each block diagonal matching field and study its corresponding initial ideal. In particular, we characterise when such ideals are toric, hence providing a family of toric degenerations for Richardson varieties.
Given a Richardson variety $X_{w}^v$ and a weight vector ${\bf w}_\ell$ arising from a matching field, we consider two ideals: an ideal $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ obtained by restricting the initial of the Plücker ideal to a smaller polynomial ring, and a toric ideal defined as the kernel of a monomial map $φ_\ell|_w^v$. We first characterise the monomial-free ideals of form $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$. Then we construct a family of tableaux in bijection with semi-standard Young tableaux which leads to a monomial basis for the corresponding quotient ring. Finally, we prove that when $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ is monomial-free and the initial ideal in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$ is quadratically generated, then all three ideals in$_{{\bf w}_\ell}(I(X_w^v))$, $G_{k,n,\ell}|_w^v$ and ker$(φ_\ell|_w^v)$ coincide, and provide a toric degeneration of $X_w^v$.

We study varieties associated to hypergraphs from the point of view of projective geometry and matroid theory. We describe their decompositions into matroid varieties, which may be reducible and can have arbitrary singularities by the Mnëv--Sturmfels universality theorem. We focus on various families of hypergraph varieties for which we explicitly compute an irredundant irreducible decomposition. Our main findings in this direction are threefold: (1) we describe minimal matroids of such hypergraphs; (2) we prove that the varieties of these matroids are irreducible and their union is the hypergraph variety; and (3) we show that every such matroid is realizable over real numbers. As corollaries, we give conceptual decompositions of various, previously-studied, varieties associated with graphs, hypergraphs, and adjacent minors of generic matrices. In particular, our decomposition strategy gives immediate matroid interpretations of the irreducible components of multiple families of varieties associated to conditional independence (CI) models in statistical theory and unravels their symmetric structures which hugely simplifies the computations.

We study the connection between probability distributions satisfying certain conditional independence (CI) constraints, and point and line arrangements in incidence geometry. To a family of CI statements, we associate a polynomial ideal whose algebraic invariants are encoded in a hypergraph. The primary decompositions of these ideals give a characterisation of the distributions satisfying the original CI statements. Classically, these ideals are generated by 2-minors of a matrix of variables, however, in the presence of hidden variables, they contain higher degree minors. This leads to the study of the structure of determinantal hypergraph ideals whose decompositions can be understood in terms of point and line configurations in the projective space.
Triangulations and Canonical Forms of Amplituhedra: a fiber-based approach beyond polytopes

Any totally positive $(k+m)\times n$ matrix induces a map $π_+$ from the positive Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}_+(k,n)$ to the Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}(k,k+m)$, whose image is the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ and is endowed with a top-degree form called the canonical form ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$. This construction was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka, where they showed that ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,4})$ encodes scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Moreover, the computation of ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ is reduced to finding the triangulations of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$. However, while triangulations of polytopes are fully captured by their secondary polytopes, the study of triangulations of objects beyond polytopes is still underdeveloped.
We initiate the geometric study of subdivisions of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ and provide a concrete birational parametrization of fibers of $π: {\rm Gr}(k,n)\dashrightarrow {\rm Gr}(k,k+m)$. We then use this to explicitly describe a rational top-degree form $ω_{n,k,m}$ (with simple poles) on the fibers and compute ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ as a summation of certain residues of $ω_{n,k,m}$. As main application of our approach, we develop a well-structured notion of secondary amplituhedra for conjugate to polytopes, i.e. when $n-k-1=m$ (even). We show that, in this case, each fiber of $π$ is parametrized by a projective space and its volume form $ω_{n,k,m}$ has only poles on a hyperplane arrangement. Using such linear structures, for amplituhedra which are cyclic polytopes or conjugate to polytopes, we show that the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue computes ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ from $ω_{n,k,m}$. Finally, we propose a more general framework of fiber positive geometries and analyze new families of examples such as fiber polytopes and Grassmann polytopes.

Matching fields were introduced by Sturmfels and Zelevinsky to study certain Newton polytopes and more recently have been shown to give rise to toric degenerations of various families of varieties. Whenever a matching field gives rise to a toric degeneration, the associated polytope of the toric variety coincides with the matching field polytope. We study combinatorial mutations, which are analogues of cluster mutations for polytopes, of matching field polytopes and show that the property of giving rise to a toric degeneration of the Grassmannians, is preserved by mutation. Moreover the polytopes arising through mutations are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians with respect to certain full-rank valuations. We produce a large family of such polytopes, extending the family of so-called block diagonal matching fields.
Standard monomial theory and toric degenerations of Richardson varieties inside Grassmannians and flag varieties
We study toric degenerations of opposite Schubert and Richardson varieties inside degenerations of Grassmannians and flag varieties. These degenerations are parametrized by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We construct so-called restricted matching field ideals whose generating sets are understood combinatorially through tableaux. We determine when these ideals are toric and coincide with Gröbner degenerations of Richardson varieties using the well established standard monomial theory for Grassmannians and flag varieties.

We present families of tableaux which interpolate between the classical semi-standard Young tableaux and matching field tableaux. Algebraically, this corresponds to SAGBI bases of Plücker algebras. We show that each such family of tableaux leads to a toric ideal, that can be realized as initial of the Plücker ideal, hence a toric degeneration for the flag variety.
