Clustered independence and bounded treewidth
A set $S\subseteq V$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \emph{$c$-clustered set} if it induces a subgraph with components of order at most $c$ each, and $α_c(G)$ denotes the size of a largest $c$-clustered set. For any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and treewidth $k$, we show that $α_c(G) \geq \frac{c}{c+k+1}n$, which improves a result of Wood [arXiv:2208.10074, August 2022], while we construct $n$-vertex graphs $G$ of treewidth~$k$ with $α_c(G)\leq \frac{c}{c+k}n$. In the case $c\leq 2$ or $k=1$ we prove the better lower bound $α_c(G) \geq \frac{c}{c+k}n$, which settles a conjecture of Chappell and Pelsmajer [Electron.\ J.\ Comb., 2013] and is best-possible. Finally, in the case $c=3$ and $k=2$, we show $α_c(G) \geq \frac{5}{9}n$ and which is best-possible.
On lattice path matroid polytopes: alcoved triangulations and snake decompositions
We study lattice path matroid polytopes using their alcoved triangulation. We characterize Gorenstein lattice path matroid polytopes, yielding a new class of matroids satisfying the unimodality conjecture of de Loera, Haws, and K{ö}ppe. Further, we characterize matroids whose polytopes are order polytopes as a special class of lattice path matroids, called snakes. Finally, we give combinatorial interpretations of the volumes and $h^*$-vectors of lattice path matroids of rank $2$ based on their snake decomposition.

Concepts of Dimension for Convex Geometries
Let $X$ be a finite set. A family $P$ of subsets of $X$ is called a convex geometry with ground set $X$ if (1) $\emptyset, X\in P$; (2) $A\cap B\in P$ whenever $A,B\in P$; and (3) if $A\in P$ and $A\neq X$, there is an element $α\in X-A$ such that $A\cup\{α\}\in P$. As a non-empty family of sets, a convex geometry has a well defined VC-dimension. In the literature, a second parameter, called convex dimension, has been defined expressly for these structures. Partially ordered by inclusion, a convex geometry is also a poset, and four additional dimension parameters have been defined for this larger class, called Dushnik-Miller dimension, Boolean dimension, local dimension, and fractional dimension, espectively. For each pair of these six dimension parameters, we investigate whether there is an infinite class of convex geometries on which one parameter is bounded and the other is not.

The signed Varchenko Determinant for Complexes of Oriented Matroids
We generalize the (signed) Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement to complexes of oriented matroids and show that its determinant has a nice factorization. This extends previous results on hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids.

On endomorphism universality of sparse graph classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that every commutative idempotent monoid (a.k.a lattice) is the endomorphism monoid of a subcubic graph. This solves a problem of Babai and Pultr [J. Comb.~Theory, Ser.~B, 1980] and the degree bound is best-possible. On the other hand, we show that no class excluding a minor can have all commutative idempotent monoids among its endomorphism monoids. As a by-product we prove that monoids can be represented by graphs of bounded expansion (reproving a result of Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez) and $k$-cancellative monoids can be represented by graphs of bounded degree. Finally, we show that not all completely regular monoids can be represented by graphs excluding topological minor (strengthening a result of Babai and Pultr).

Lattice path matroids and quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the quotients among lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of their diagrams. This characterization allows us to show that ordering LPMs by quotients yields a graded poset, whose rank polynomial has the Narayana numbers as coefficients. Furthermore, we study full lattice path flag matroids and show that -- contrary to arbitrary positroid flag matroids -- they correspond to points in the nonnegative flag variety. At the basis of this result lies an identification of certain intervals of the strong Bruhat order with lattice path flag matroids. A recent conjecture of Mcalmon, Oh, and Xiang states a characterization of quotients of positroids. We use our results to prove this conjecture in the case of LPMs.

Beyond symmetry in generalized Petersen graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is a core or unretractive if all its endomorphisms are automorphisms. Well-known examples of cores include the Petersen graph and the graph of the dodecahedron -- both generalized Petersen graphs. We characterize the generalized Petersen graphs that are cores. A simple characterization of endomorphism-transitive generalized Petersen graphs follows. This extends the characterization of vertex-transitive generalized Petersen graphs due to Frucht, Graver, and Watkins and solves a problem of Fan and Xie. Moreover, we study generalized Petersen graphs that are (underlying graphs of) Cayley graphs of monoids. We show that this is the case for the Petersen graph, answering a recent mathoverflow question, for the Desargues graphs, and for the dodecahedron -- answering a question of Knauer and Knauer. Moreover, we characterize the infinite family of generalized Petersen graphs that are Cayley graph of a monoid with generating connection set of size two. This extends Nedela and Škoviera's characterization of generalized Petersen graphs that are group Cayley graphs and complements results of Hao, Gao, and Luo.

Kirchberger's Theorem for Complexes of Oriented Matroids
The separation theorem of Kirchberger can be proven using a combination of Farkas' Lemma and Caratheodory's Theorem. Since those theorems are at the heart of oriented matroids, we are interested in a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem to them. This has already been done for rank 3 oriented matroids. Here we prove it for complexes of oriented matroids, which are a generalization of oriented matroids.

Feedback vertex sets in (directed) graphs of bounded degeneracy or treewidth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the minimum size $f$ of a feedback vertex set in directed and undirected $n$-vertex graphs of given degeneracy or treewidth. In the undirected setting the bound $\frac{k-1}{k+1}n$ is known to be tight for graphs with bounded treewidth $k$ or bounded odd degeneracy $k$. We show that neither of the easy upper and lower bounds $\frac{k-1}{k+1}n$ and $\frac{k}{k+2}n$ can be exact for the case of even degeneracy. More precisely, for even degeneracy $k$ we prove that $f < \frac{k}{k+2}n$ and for every $ε>0$, there exists a $k$-degenerate graph for which $f\geq \frac{3k-2}{3k+4}n -ε$. For directed graphs of bounded degeneracy $k$, we prove that $f\leq\frac{k-1}{k+1}n$ and that this inequality is strict when $k$ is odd. For directed graphs of bounded treewidth $k\geq 2$, we show that $f \leq \frac{k}{k+3}n$ and for every $ε>0$, there exists a $k$-degenerate graph for which $f\geq \frac{k-2\lfloor\log_2(k)\rfloor}{k+1}n -ε$. Further, we provide several constructions of low degeneracy or treewidth and large $f$.

Labeled sample compression schemes for complexes of oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the topes of a complex of oriented matroids (abbreviated COM) of VC-dimension $d$ admit a proper labeled sample compression scheme of size $d$. This considerably extends results of Moran and Warmuth on ample classes, of Ben-David and Litman on affine arrangements of hyperplanes, and of the authors on complexes of uniform oriented matroids, and is a step towards the sample compression conjecture -- one of the oldest open problems in computational learning theory. On the one hand, our approach exploits the rich combinatorial cell structure of COMs via oriented matroid theory. On the other hand, viewing tope graphs of COMs as partial cubes creates a fruitful link to metric graph theory.

On monoid graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate Cayley graphs of finite semigroups and monoids. First, we look at semigroup digraphs, i.e., directed Cayley graphs of semigroups, and give a Sabidussi-type characterization in the case of monoids. We then correct a proof of Zelinka from '81 that characterizes semigroup digraphs with outdegree $1$. Further, answering a question of Knauer and Knauer, we construct for every $k\geq 2$ connected $k$-outregular non-semigroup digraphs. On the other hand, we show that every sink-free directed graph is a union of connected components of a monoid digraph. Second, we consider monoid graphs, i.e., underlying simple undirected graphs of Cayley graphs of monoids. We show that forests and threshold graphs form part of this family. Conversely, we construct the -- to our knowledge -- first graphs, that are not monoid graphs. We present non-monoid graphs that are planar, have arboricity $2$, and treewidth $3$ on the one hand, and non-monoid graphs of arbitrarily high connectivity on the other hand. Third, we study generated monoid trees, i.e., trees that are monoid graphs with respect to a generating set. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a tree to be in this family, allowing us to find large classes of trees inside and outside the family.
On the dichromatic number of surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we give bounds on the dichromatic number $\vecχ(Σ)$ of a surface $Σ$, which is the maximum dichromatic number of an oriented graph embeddable on $Σ$. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of $\vecχ(Σ)$ by showing that there exist constants $a_1$ and $a_2$ such that, $a_1\frac{\sqrt{-c}}{\log(-c)} \leq \vecχ(Σ) \leq a_2 \frac{\sqrt{-c}}{\log(-c)} $ for every surface $Σ$ with Euler characteristic $c\leq -2$. We then give more explicit bounds for some surfaces with high Euler characteristic. In particular, we show that the dichromatic numbers of the projective plane $\mathbb{N}_1$, the Klein bottle $\mathbb{N}_2$, the torus $\mathbb{S}_1$, and Dyck's surface $\mathbb{N}_3$ are all equal to $3$, and that the dichromatic numbers of the $5$-torus $\mathbb{S}_5$ and the $10$-cross surface $\mathbb{N}_{10}$ are equal to $4$. We also consider the complexity of deciding whether a given digraph or oriented graph embeddable on a fixed surface is $k$-dicolourable. In particular, we show that for any fixed surface, deciding whether a digraph embeddable on this surface is $2$-dicolourable is NP-complete, and that deciding whether a planar oriented graph is $2$-dicolourable is NP-complete unless all planar oriented graphs are $2$-dicolourable (which was conjectured by Neumann-Lara).

Finitary affine oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the axiomatic study of affine oriented matroids (AOMs) on arbitrary ground sets, obtaining fundamental notions such as minors, reorientations and a natural embedding into the frame work of Complexes of Oriented Matroids. The restriction to the finitary case (FAOMs) allows us to study tope graphs and covector posets, as well as to view FAOMs as oriented finitary semimatroids. We show shellability of FAOMs and single out the FAOMs that are affinely homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we study group actions on AOMs, whose quotients in the case of FAOMs are a stepping stone towards a general theory of affine and toric pseudoarrangements. Our results include applications of the multiplicity Tutte polynomial of group actions of semimatroids, generalizing enumerative properties of toric arrangements to a combinatorially defined class of arrangements of submanifolds. This answers partially a question by Ehrenborg and Readdy.

On sensitivity in bipartite Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Huang proved that every set of more than half the vertices of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$ induces a subgraph of maximum degree at least $\sqrt{d}$, which is tight by a result of Chung, Füredi, Graham, and Seymour. Huang asked whether similar results can be obtained for other highly symmetric graphs. First, we present three infinite families of Cayley graphs of unbounded degree that contain induced subgraphs of maximum degree $1$ on more than half the vertices. In particular, this refutes a conjecture of Potechin and Tsang, for which first counterexamples were shown recently by Lehner and Verret. The first family consists of dihedrants and contains a sporadic counterexample encountered earlier by Lehner and Verret. The second family are star graphs, these are edge-transitive Cayley graphs of the symmetric group. All members of the third family are $d$-regular containing an induced matching on a $\frac{d}{2d-1}$-fraction of the vertices. This is largest possible and answers a question of Lehner and Verret. Second, we consider Huang's lower bound for graphs with subcubes and show that the corresponding lower bound is tight for products of Coxeter groups of type $\mathbf{A_n}$, $\mathbf{I_2}(2k+1)$, and most exceptional cases. We believe that Coxeter groups are a suitable generalization of the hypercube with respect to Huang's question. Finally, we show that induced subgraphs on more than half the vertices of Levi graphs of projective planes and of the Ramanujan graphs of Lubotzky, Phillips, and Sarnak have unbounded degree. This gives classes of Cayley graphs with properties similar to the ones provided by Huang's results. However, in contrast to Coxeter groups these graphs have no subcubes.

Ample completions of OMs and CUOMs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers completions of COMs (complexes oriented matroids) to ample partial cubes of the same VC-dimension. We show that these exist for OMs (oriented matroids) and CUOMs (complexes of uniform oriented matroids). This implies that OMs and CUOMs satisfy the sample compression conjecture -- one of the central open questions of learning theory. We conjecture that every COM can be completed to an ample partial cube without increasing the VC-dimension.

Plattenbauten: Touching Rectangles in Space
Published • View PublicationBIB
Planar bipartite graphs can be represented as touching graphs of horizontal and vertical segments in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We study a generalization in space: touching graphs of axis-aligned rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove that planar 3-colorable graphs can be represented this way. The result implies a characterization of corner polytopes previously obtained by Eppstein and Mumford. A by-product of our proof is a distributive lattice structure on the set of orthogonal surfaces with given skeleton. Further, we study representations by axis-aligned non-coplanar rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^3$ such that all regions are boxes. We show that the resulting graphs correspond to octahedrations of an octahedron. This generalizes the correspondence between planar quadrangulations and families of horizontal and vertical segments in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with the property that all regions are rectangles.

Corners and simpliciality in oriented matroids and partial cubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Building on a recent characterization of tope graphs of Complexes of Oriented Matroids (COMs), we tackle and generalize several classical problems in Oriented Matroids (OMs), Lopsided Sets (aka ample set systems), and partial cubes via Metric Graph Theory. Our first main result is that every element of an OM from a class introduced by Mandel is incident to a simplicial tope, i.e, such OMs contain no mutation-free elements. This allows us to refute a conjecture of Mandel from 1983, that would have implied the famous Las Vergnas' simplex conjecture. Further, we show that the mutation graph of uniform OMs of order at most 9 are connected, thus confirming a stronger conjecture of Cordovil-Las Vergnas in this setting. The second main contribution is the introduction of corners of COMs as a natural generalization of corners in Lopsided Sets. Generalizing results of Bandelt and Chepoi, Tracy Hall, and Chalopin et al. we prove that realizable COMs, rank 2 COMs, as well as hypercellular graphs admit corner peelings. Using this, we confirm Las Vergnas' conjecture for antipodal partial cubes (a class much lager than OMs) of small rank or isometric dimension.
Colouring bottomless rectangles and arborescences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study problems related to colouring bottomless rectangles. One of our main results shows that for any positive integers $m, k$, there is no semi-online algorithm that can $k$-colour bottomless rectangles with disjoint boundaries in increasing order of their top sides, so that any $m$-fold covered point is covered by at least two colours. This is, surprisingly, a corollary of a stronger result for arborescence colourings. Any semi-online colouring algorithm that colours an arborescence in leaf-to-root order with a bounded number of colours produces arbitrarily long monochromatic paths. This is complemented by optimal upper bounds given by simple online colouring algorithms from other directions. Our other main results study configurations of bottomless rectangles in an attempt to improve the \textit{polychromatic $k$-colouring number}, $m_k^*$. We show that for many families of bottomless rectangles, such as unit-width bottomless rectangles, $m_k^*$ is linear in $k$. We also present an improved lower bound for general families: $m_k^* \geq 2k-1$.
Cayley posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce Cayley posets as posets arising naturally from pairs $S<T$ of semigroups, much in the same way that Cayley graph arises from a (semi)group and a subset. We show that Cayley posets are a common generalization of several known classes of posets, e.g. posets of numerical semigroups (with torsion) and more generally affine semigroups. Furthermore, we give Sabidussi-type characterizations for Cayley posets and for several subclasses in terms of their endomorphism monoid. We show that large classes of posets are Cayley posets, e.g., series-parallel posets and (generalizations of) join-semilattices, but also provide examples of posets which cannot be represented this way. Finally, we characterize (locally finite, with a finite number of atoms) auto-equivalent posets - a class that generalizes a recently introduced notion for numerical semigroups - as those posets coming from a finitely generated submonoid of an abelian group.

Planar cubic graphs of small diameter
Cubic planar $n$-vertex graphs with faces of length at most $6$, e.g., fullerene graphs, have diameter in $Ω(\sqrt{n})$. It has been suspected, that a similar result can be shown for cubic planar graphs with faces of bounded length. This note provides a family of cubic planar $n$-vertex graphs with faces of length at most $7$ and diameter in ${O}(\log n)$, thus refuting the above suspicion.
