In recent work on the representation theory of vertex algebras related to the Virasoro minimal models M(2,p), Adamovic and Milas discovered logarithmic analogues of (special cases of) the famous Dyson and Morris constant term identities. In this paper we show how the identities of Adamovic and Milas arise naturally by differentiating as-yet-conjectural complex analogues of the constant term identities of Dyson and Morris. We also discuss the existence of complex and logarithmic constant term identities for arbitrary root systems, and in particular prove complex and logarithmic constant term identities for the root system G_2.

The $q$-binomial coefficients $\qbinom{n}{m}=\prod_{i=1}^m(1-q^{n-m+i})/(1-q^i)$, for integers $0\le m\le n$, are known to be polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients. This readily follows from the $q$-binomial theorem, or the many combinatorial interpretations of $\qbinom{n}{m}$. In this note we conjecture an arithmetically motivated generalisation of the non-negativity property for products of ratios of $q$-factorials that happen to be polynomials.

We prove a q-series identity that generalises Macdonald's A_{2n}^{(2)} eta-function identity and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We conjecture our result to generalise even further to also include the Andrews-Gordon identities.

This is a paper published in 2001 based on a talk given in 1999 celebrating the 50th anniversary of W. N. Bailey's influential q-series paper "Identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type". In no more than 13 pages I give a brief but reasonably complete overview of the mathematics related to Bailey's lemma.

We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.

A one-parameter generalisation R_λ(X;b) of the symmetric Macdonald polynomials and interpolations Macdonald polynomials is studied from the point of view of branching rules. We establish a Pieri formula, evaluation symmetry, principal specialisation formula and q-difference equation for R_λ(X;b). We also prove a new multiple q-Gauss summation formula and several further results for sl_n basic hypergeometric series based on R_λ(X;b).

Using an extension of the well-known evaluation symmetry, a new Cauchy-type identity for Macdonald polynomials is proved. After taking the classical limit this yields a new sl_3 generalisation of the famous Selberg integral. Closely related results obtained in this paper are an sl_3-analogue of the Askey-Habsieger-Kadell q-Selberg integral and an extension of the q-Selberg integral to a transformation between q-integrals of different dimensions.

The Knop-Sahi interpolation Macdonald polynomials are inhomogeneous and nonsymmetric generalisations of the well-known Macdonald polynomials. In this paper we apply the interpolation Macdonald polynomials to study a new type of basic hypergeometric series of type g_n. Our main results include a new q-binomial theorem, new q-Gauss sum, and several transformation formulae for g_n series.

It has been remarked that a fair measure of the impact of Atle Selberg's work is the number of mathematical terms which bear his name. One of these is the Selberg integral, an n-dimensional generalization of the Euler beta integral. We trace its sudden rise to prominence, initiated by a question to Selberg from Enrico Bombieri, more than thirty years after publication. In quick succession the Selberg integral was used to prove an outstanding conjecture in random matrix theory, and cases of the Macdonald conjectures. It further initiated the study of q-analogues, which in turn enriched the Macdonald conjectures. We review these developments and proceed to exhibit the sustained prominence of the Selberg integral, evidenced by its central role in random matrix theory, Calogero-Sutherland quantum many body systems, Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, and multivariable orthogonal polynomial theory.
On the generalised Selberg integral of Richards and Zheng

In a recent paper Richards and Zheng compute the determinant of a matrix whose entries are given by beta-type integrals, thereby generalising an earlier result by Dixon and Varchenko. They then use their result to obtain a generalisation of the famous Selberg integral.
In this note we point out that the Selberg-generalisation of Richards and Zheng is a special case of an integral over Jack polynomials due to Kadell. We then show how an integral formula for Jack polynomials of Okounkov and Olshanski may be applied to prove Kadell's integral along the lines of Richards and Zheng.

A new q-binomial theorem for Macdonald polynomials is employed to prove an A_n analogue of the celebrated Selberg integral. This confirms the g=A_n case of a conjecture by Mukhin and Varchenko concerning the existence of a Selberg integral for every simple Lie algebra g.
Bisymmetric functions, Macdonald polynomials and sl_3 basic hypergeometric series

A new type of sl_3 basic hypergeometric series based on Macdonald polynomials is introduced. Besides a pair of Macdonald polynomials attached to two different sets of variables, a key-ingredient in the sl_3 basic hypergeometric series is a bisymmetric function related to Macdonald's commuting family of q-difference operators, to the sl_3 Selberg integrals of Tarasov and Varchenko, and to alternating sign matrices. Our main result for sl_3 series is a multivariable generalization of the celebrated q-binomial theorem. In the limit this q-binomial sum yields a new sl_3 Selberg integral for Jack polynomials.

Several new transformations for q-binomial coefficients are found, which have the special feature that the kernel is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. By studying the group-like properties of these positivity preserving transformations, as well as their connection with the Bailey lemma, many new summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are found. The new q-binomial transformations are also applied to obtain multisum Rogers--Ramanujan identities, to find new representations for the Rogers--Szego polynomials, and to make some progress on Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture. For the original Borwein conjecture we formulate a refinement based on a new triple sum representations of the Borwein polynomials.

Using the theory of Kostka polynomials, we prove an A_{n-1} version of Bailey's lemma at integral level. Exploiting a new, conjectural expansion for Kostka numbers, this is then generalized to fractional levels, leading to a new expression for admissible characters of A_{n-1}^{(1)} and to identities for A-type branching functions.

Transformation formulas for four-parameter refinements of the q-trinomial coefficients are proven. The iterative nature of these transformations allows for the easy derivation of several infinite series of q-trinomial identities, and can be applied to prove many instances of Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture.
