Central limit theorems for patterns in multiset permutations and set partitions
Published in Annals of Applied Probability, 30 (1), pp. 287-323, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We use the recently developed method of weighted dependency graphs to prove central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of any fixed pattern in multiset permutations and in set partitions. This generalizes results for patterns of size 2 in both settings, obtained by Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger and Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, respectively.

Trajectories in random minimal transposition factorizations
We study random typical minimal factorizations of the $n$-cycle, which are factorizations of $(1, \ldots,n)$ as a product of $n-1$ transpositions, chosen uniformly at random. Our main result is, roughly speaking, a local convergence theorem for the trajectories of finitely many points in the factorization. The main tool is an encoding of the factorization by an edge and vertex-labelled tree, which is shown to converge to Kesten's infinite Bienaymé-Galton-Watson tree with Poisson offspring distribution, uniform i.i.d. edge labels and vertex labels obtained by a local exploration algorithm.

Two first-order logics of permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider two orthogonal points of view on finite permutations, seen as pairs of linear orders (corresponding to the usual one line representation of permutations as words) or seen as bijections (corresponding to the algebraic point of view). For each of them, we define a corresponding first-order logical theory, that we call $\mathsf{TOTO}$ (Theory Of Two Orders) and $\mathsf{TOOB}$ (Theory Of One Bijection) respectively. We consider various expressibility questions in these theories. Our main results go in three different direction. First, we prove that, for all $k \ge 1$, the set of $k$-stack sortable permutations in the sense of West is expressible in $\mathsf{TOTO}$, and that a logical sentence describing this set can be obtained automatically. Previously, descriptions of this set were only known for $k \le 3$. Next, we characterize permutation classes inside which it is possible to express in $\mathsf{TOTO}$ that some given points form a cycle. Lastly, we show that sets of permutations that can be described both in $\mathsf{TOOB}$ and $\mathsf{TOTO}$ are in some sense trivial. This gives a mathematical evidence that permutations-as-bijections and permutations-as-words are somewhat different objects.

The geometry of random minimal factorizations of a long cycle via biconditioned bitype random trees
We study random typical minimal factorizations of the $n$-cycle into transpositions, which are factorizations of $(1, \ldots,n)$ as a product of $n-1$ transpositions. By viewing transpositions as chords of the unit disk and by reading them one after the other, one obtains a sequence of increasing laminations of the unit disk (i.e. compact subsets of the unit disk made of non-intersecting chords). When an order of $\sqrt{n}$ consecutive transpositions have been read, we establish, roughly speaking, that a phase transition occurs and that the associated laminations converge to a new one-parameter family of random laminations, constructed from excursions of specific Lévy processes. Our main tools involve coding random minimal factorizations by conditioned two-type Bienaymé--Galton--Watson trees. We establish in particular limit theorems for two-type BGW trees conditioned on having given numbers of vertices of both types, and with an offspring distribution depending on the conditioning size. We believe that this could be of independent interest.

Asymptotics for skew standard Young tableaux via bounds for characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are interested in the asymptotics of the number of standard Young tableaux $f^{λ/μ}$ of a given skew shape $λ/μ$. We mainly restrict ourselves to the case where both diagrams are balanced, but investigate all growth regimes of $|μ|$ compared to $|λ|$, from $|μ|$ fixed to $|μ|$ of order $|λ|$. When $|μ|=o(|λ|^{1/3})$, we get an asymptotic expansion to any order. When $|μ|=o(|λ|^{1/2})$, we get a sharp upper bound. For bigger $|μ|$, we prove a weaker bound and give a conjecture on what we believe to be the correct order of magnitude. Our results are obtained by expressing $f^{λ/μ}$ in terms of irreducible character values of the symmetric group and applying known upper bounds on characters.
Universal limits of substitution-closed permutation classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider uniform random permutations in proper substitution-closed classes and study their limiting behavior in the sense of permutons. The limit depends on the generating series of the simple permutations in the class. Under a mild sufficient condition, the limit is an elementary one-parameter deformation of the limit of uniform separable permutations, previously identified as the Brownian separable permuton. This limiting object is therefore in some sense universal. We identify two other regimes with different limiting objects. The first one is degenerate; the second one is nontrivial and related to stable trees. These results are obtained thanks to a characterization of the convergence of random permutons through the convergence of their expected pattern densities. The limit of expected pattern densities is then computed by using the substitution tree encoding of permutations and performing singularity analysis on the tree series.

Weighted dependency graphs and the Ising model
Published • View PublicationBIB
Weighted dependency graphs have been recently introduced by the second author, as a toolbox to prove central limit theorems. In this paper, we prove that spins in the $d$-dimensional Ising model display such a weighted dependency structure. We use this to obtain various central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of local and global patterns in a growing box.

Shifted symmetric functions and multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams
Published in Journal of Algebra, 483, pp. 262-305, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study shifted Schur functions $S_μ^\star$, as well as a new family of shifted symmetric functions $\mathfrak{K}_μ$ linked to Kostka numbers. We prove that both are polynomials in multi-rectangular coordinates, with nonnegative coefficients when written in terms of falling factorials. We then propose a conjectural generalization to the Jack setting. This conjecture is a lifting of Knop and Sahi's positivity result for usual Jack polynomials and resembles recent conjectures of Lassalle. We prove our conjecture for one-part partitions.

Weighted dependency graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability, 23, paper no. 93, 65 pp, 2018 • Search Publication
The theory of dependency graphs is a powerful toolbox to prove asymptotic normality of sums of random variables. In this article, we introduce a more general notion of weighted dependency graphs and give normality criteria in this context. We also provide generic tools to prove that some weighted graph is a weighted dependency graph for a given family of random variables. To illustrate the power of the theory, we give applications to the following objects: uniform random pair partitions, the random graph model $G(n,M)$, uniform random permutations, the symmetric simple exclusion process and multilinear statistics on Markov chains. The application to random permutations gives a bivariate extension of a functional central limit theorem of Janson and Barbour. On Markov chains, we answer positively an open question of Bourdon and Vallée on the asymptotic normality of subword counts in random texts generated by a Markovian source.
The Brownian limit of separable permutations
Published in Annals of Probability, 46 (4), pp. 2134-2189, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We study random uniform permutations in an important class of pattern-avoiding permutations: the separable permutations. We describe the asymptotics of the number of occurrences of any fixed given pattern in such a random permutation in terms of the Brownian excursion. In the recent terminology of permutons, our work can be interpreted as the convergence of uniform random separable permutations towards a "Brownian separable permuton".

Cumulants of Jack symmetric functions and $b$-conjecture
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 369 (12), 9015-9039, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+β)$ that might be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the generating series of rooted hypermaps. They made the following conjecture: the coefficients of $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+β)$ in the power-sum basis are polynomials in $β$ with nonnegative integer coefficients (by construction, these coefficients are rational functions in $β$). We prove partially this conjecture, nowadays called $b$-conjecture, by showing that coefficients of $ψ(x, y, z; t, 1+ β)$ are polynomials in $β$ with rational coefficients. A key step of the proof is a strong factorization property of Jack polynomials when the Jack-deformation parameter $α$ tends to $0$, that may be of independent interest.

On the combinatorial local log-concavity conjecture and a result of Stanley
The purpose of this note is to explain that the combinatorial local log-concavity conjecture introduced by Gross, Mansour, Tucker and Wang (Eur. J. Comb. 52, 207-222, 2016) in fact follows from a result of Stanley (Eur. J. Comb. 32 (6), 937-943, 2011).

Cyclic inclusion-exclusion
Published in Siam J. Disc. Math., 29 (4), pp. 2284-2311, 2015 • Search Publication
Following the lead of Stanley and Gessel, we consider a morphism which associates to an acyclic directed graph (or a poset) a quasi-symmetric function. The latter is naturally defined as multivariate generating series of non-decreasing functions on the graph. We describe the kernel of this morphism, using a simple combinatorial operation that we call cyclic inclusion-exclusion. Our result also holds for the natural noncommutative analog and for the commutative and noncommutative restrictions to bipartite graphs. An application to the theory of Kerov character polynomials is given.
Super quasi-symmetric functions via Young diagrams
Published in FPSAC 2014, Chicago (USA), DMTCS proc. AT, 2014, 169-180 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the multivariate generating series $F_P$ of $P$-partitions in infinitely many variables $x_1, x_2 , \dots$. For some family of ranked posets $P$, it is natural to consider an analog $N_P$ with two infinite alphabets. When we collapse these two alphabets, we trivially recover $F_P$. Our main result is the converse, that is, the explicit construction of a map sending back $F_P$ onto $N_P$. We also give a noncommutative analog of the latter. An application is the construction of a basis of WQSym with a non-negative multiplication table, which lifts a basis of QSym introduced by K. Luoto.

Gaussian fluctuations of Young diagrams and structure constants of Jack characters
Published in Duke Math. J. 165, no. 7 (2016), 1193-1282 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider a deformation of Plancherel measure linked to Jack polynomials. Our main result is the description of the first and second-order asymptotics of the bulk of a random Young diagram under this distribution, which extends celebrated results of Vershik-Kerov and Logan-Shepp (for the first order asymptotics) and Kerov (for the second order asymptotics). This gives more evidence of the connection with Gaussian $β$-ensemble, already suggested by some work of Matsumoto. Our main tool is a polynomiality result for the structure constant of some quantities that we call Jack characters, recently introduced by Lassalle. We believe that this result is also interested in itself and we give several other applications of it.
Quasi-symmetric functions as polynomial functions on Young diagrams
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 41 (3), pp. 669-706, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
We determine the most general form of a smooth function on Young diagrams, that is, a polynomial in the interlacing or multirectangular coordinates whose value depends only on the shape of the diagram. We prove that the algebra of such functions is isomorphic to quasi-symmetric functions, and give a noncommutative analog of this result.

An edge-weighted hook formula for labelled trees
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, 5 (2), pp. 245-269, 2014 • Search Publication
A number of hook formulas and hook summation formulas have previously appeared, involving various classes of trees. One of these classes of trees is rooted trees with labelled vertices, in which the labels increase along every chain from the root vertex to a leaf. In this paper we give a new hook summation formula for these (unordered increasing) trees, by introducing a new set of indeterminates indexed by pairs of vertices, that we call edge weights. This new result generalizes a previous result by Féray and Goulden, that arose in the context of representations of the symmetric group via the study of Kerov's character polynomials. Our proof is by means of a combinatorial bijection that is a generalization of the Prüfer code for labelled trees.
Mod-phi convergence I: Normality zones and precise deviations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use the framework of mod-$φ$ convergence to prove precise large or moderate deviations for quite general sequences of real valued random variables $(X_{n})_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, which can be lattice or non-lattice distributed. We establish precise estimates of the fluctuations $P[X_{n} \in t_{n}B]$, instead of the usual estimates for the rate of exponential decay $\log( P[X_{n}\in t_{n}B])$. Our approach provides us with a systematic way to characterise the normality zone, that is the zone in which the Gaussian approximation for the tails is still valid. Besides, the residue function measures the extent to which this approximation fails to hold at the edge of the normality zone. The first sections of the article are devoted to a proof of these abstract results and comparisons with existing results. We then propose new examples covered by this theory and coming from various areas of mathematics: classical probability theory, number theory (statistics of additive arithmetic functions), combinatorics (statistics of random permutations), random matrix theory (characteristic polynomials of random matrices in compact Lie groups), graph theory (number of subgraphs in a random Erdős-Rényi graph), and non-commutative probability theory (asymptotics of random character values of symmetric groups). In particular, we complete our theory of precise deviations by a concrete method of cumulants and dependency graphs, which applies to many examples of sums of "weakly dependent" random variables. The large number as well as the variety of examples hint at a universality class for second order fluctuations.

Jack polynomials and orientability generating series of maps
Published in Sém. Lothar. Combin., 70:Art. B70j, 50 pp., 2014 (electronic) • Search Publication
We study Jack characters, which are the coefficients of the power-sum expansion of Jack symmetric functions with a suitable normalization. These quantities have been introduced by Lassalle who formulated some challenging conjectures about them. We conjecture existence of a weight on non-oriented maps (i.e., graphs drawn on non-oriented surfaces) which allows to express any given Jack character as a weighted sum of some simple functions indexed by maps. We provide a candidate for this weight which gives a positive answer to our conjecture in some, but unfortunately not all, cases. In particular, it gives a positive answer for Jack characters specialized on Young diagrams of rectangular shape. This candidate weight attempts to measure, in a sense, the non-orientability of a given map.

On products of long cycles: short cycle dependence and separation probabilities
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 42, (1) pp. 183-224, 2015 • Search Publication
We present various results on multiplying cycles in the symmetric group. Our first result is a generalisation of the following theorem of Boccara (1980): the number of ways of writing an odd permutation in the symmetric group on $n$ symbols as a product of an $n$-cycle and an $n-1$-cycle is independent of the permutation chosen. We give a number of different approaches of our generalisation. One partial proof uses an inductive method which we also apply to other problems. In particular, we give a formula for the distribution of the number of cycles over all products of cycles of fixed lengths. Another application is related to the recent notion of separation probabilities for permutations introduced by Bernardi, Du, Morales and Stanley (2014).
