On the geometry of the orthogonal momentum amplituhedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the orthogonal momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{O}_k$, a recently introduced positive geometry that encodes the tree-level scattering amplitudes in ABJM theory. We generate the full boundary stratification of $\mathcal{O}_k$ and show that its boundaries can be labelled by so-called orthogonal Grassmannian forests (OG forests). We also determine the generating function for enumerating boundaries according to their dimension and show that the Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{O}_k$ equals one. This provides a strong indication that the orthogonal momentum amplituhedron is homeomorphic to a ball. This paper is supplemented with the Mathematica package "orthitroids" which contains useful functions for studying the positive orthogonal Grassmannian and the orthogonal momentum amplituhedron.

The Amplituhedron BCFW Triangulation
Published • View PublicationBIB
The amplituhedron Ank4 is a geometric object, introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka (2013) in the study of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theories. They conjecture that Ank4 admits a decomposition into images of BCFW positroid cells, arising from the Britto--Cachazo--Feng--Witten recurrence (2005). We prove that this conjecture is true.

Grass trees and forests: Enumeration of Grassmannian trees and forests, with applications to the momentum amplituhedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Exponential Formula allows one to enumerate any class of combinatorial objects built by choosing a set of connected components and placing a structure on each connected component which depends only on its size. There are multiple variants of this result, including Speicher's result for noncrossing partitions, as well as analogues of the Exponential Formula for series-reduced planar trees and forests. In this paper we use these formulae to give generating functions contracted Grassmannian trees and forests, certain graphs whose vertices are decorated with a helicity. Along the way we enumerate bipartite planar trees and forests, and we apply our results to enumerate various families of permutations: for example, bipartite planar trees are in bijection with separable permutations. Our generating function for Grassmannian forests can be interpreted as the rank generating function for the boundary strata of the momentum amplituhedron, an object which encodes the tree-level S-matrix of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This allows us to verify that the Euler characteristic of the momentum amplituhedron is 1.

The positive Grassmannian, the amplituhedron, and cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The positive Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}^{\geq 0}$ is the subset of the real Grassmannian where all Plücker coordinates are nonnegative. It has a beautiful combinatorial structure as well as connections to statistical physics, integrable systems, and scattering amplitudes. The amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is the image of the positive Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}^{\geq 0}$ under a positive linear map $\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^{k+m}$. We will explain how ideas from oriented matroids, tropical geometry, and cluster algebras shed light on the structure of the positive Grassmannian and the amplituhedron.

Amplituhedron-like geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider amplituhedron-like geometries which are defined in a similar way to the intrinsic definition of the amplituhedron but with non-maximal winding number. We propose that for the cases with minimal number of points the canonical form of these geometries corresponds to the product of parity conjugate amplitudes at tree as well as loop level. The product of amplitudes in superspace lifts to a star product in bosonised superspace which we give a precise definition of. We give an alternative definition of amplituhedron-like geometries, analogous to the original amplituhedron definition, and also a characterisation as a sum over pairs of on-shell diagrams that we use to prove the conjecture at tree level. The union of all amplituhedron-like geometries has a very simple definition given by only physical inequalities. Although such a union does not give a positive geometry, a natural extension of the standard definition of canonical form, the globally oriented canonical form, acts on this union and gives the square of the amplitude.
The m=2 amplituhedron and the hypersimplex: signs, clusters, triangulations, Eulerian numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The hypersimplex $Δ_{k+1,n}$ is the image of the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n}$ under the moment map. It is a polytope of dimension $n-1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Meanwhile, the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ is the projection of the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n}$ into $Gr_{k,k+2}$ under a map $\tilde{Z}$ induced by a matrix $Z\in \text{Mat}_{n,k+2}^{>0}$. Introduced in the context of scattering amplitudes, it is not a polytope, and has dimension $2k$. Nevertheless, there seem to be remarkable connections between these two objects via T-duality, as was first noted by Lukowski--Parisi--Williams (LPW). In this paper we use ideas from oriented matroid theory, total positivity, and the geometry of the hypersimplex and positroid polytopes to obtain a deeper understanding of the amplituhedron. We show that the inequalities cutting out positroid polytopes -- images of positroid cells of $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n}$ under the moment map -- translate into sign conditions characterizing the T-dual Grasstopes -- images of positroid cells of $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n}$ under $\tilde{Z}$. Moreover, we subdivide the amplituhedron into chambers, just as the hypersimplex can be subdivided into simplices, with both chambers and simplices enumerated by the Eulerian numbers. We prove the main conjecture of (LPW): a collection of positroid polytopes is a triangulation of $Δ_{k+1, n}$ if and only if the collection of T-dual Grasstopes is a triangulation of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ for all $Z$. Moreover, we prove Arkani-Hamed--Thomas--Trnka's conjectural sign-flip characterization of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$, and Lukowski--Parisi--Spradlin--Volovich's conjectures on $m=2$ cluster adjacency and on generalized triangles (images of $2k$-dimensional positroid cells which map injectively into $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$). Finally, we introduce new cluster structures in the amplituhedron.

Shelling the m=1 amplituhedron
Published in Comb. Theory 3 (2023), no. 1, Paper No. 6, 22 pages • View PublicationBIB
The amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka (2014) in order to give a geometric basis for calculating scattering amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. It is a projection inside the Grassmannian $\text{Gr}_{k,k+m}$ of the totally nonnegative part of $\text{Gr}_{k,n}$. Karp and Williams (2019) studied the $m=1$ amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,1}$, giving a regular CW decomposition of it. Its face poset $R_{n,l}$ (with $l := n-k-1$) consists of all projective sign vectors of length $n$ with exactly $l$ sign changes. We show that $R_{n,l}$ is EL-shellable, resolving a problem posed by Karp and Williams. This gives a new proof that $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,1}$ is homeomorphic to a closed ball, which was originally proved by Karp and Williams. We also give explicit formulas for the $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $R_{n,l}$, and show that it is rank-log-concave and strongly Sperner. Finally, we consider a related poset $P_{n,l}$ introduced by Machacek (2019), consisting of all projective sign vectors of length $n$ with at most $l$ sign changes. We show that it is rank-log-concave, and conjecture that it is Sperner.

Triangulations and Canonical Forms of Amplituhedra: a fiber-based approach beyond polytopes
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 387, 927-972 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Any totally positive $(k+m)\times n$ matrix induces a map $π_+$ from the positive Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}_+(k,n)$ to the Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}(k,k+m)$, whose image is the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ and is endowed with a top-degree form called the canonical form ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$. This construction was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka, where they showed that ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,4})$ encodes scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Moreover, the computation of ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ is reduced to finding the triangulations of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$. However, while triangulations of polytopes are fully captured by their secondary polytopes, the study of triangulations of objects beyond polytopes is still underdeveloped. We initiate the geometric study of subdivisions of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}$ and provide a concrete birational parametrization of fibers of $π: {\rm Gr}(k,n)\dashrightarrow {\rm Gr}(k,k+m)$. We then use this to explicitly describe a rational top-degree form $ω_{n,k,m}$ (with simple poles) on the fibers and compute ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ as a summation of certain residues of $ω_{n,k,m}$. As main application of our approach, we develop a well-structured notion of secondary amplituhedra for conjugate to polytopes, i.e. when $n-k-1=m$ (even). We show that, in this case, each fiber of $π$ is parametrized by a projective space and its volume form $ω_{n,k,m}$ has only poles on a hyperplane arrangement. Using such linear structures, for amplituhedra which are cyclic polytopes or conjugate to polytopes, we show that the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue computes ${\bfΩ}(\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m})$ from $ω_{n,k,m}$. Finally, we propose a more general framework of fiber positive geometries and analyze new families of examples such as fiber polytopes and Grassmann polytopes.

From Momentum Amplituhedron Boundaries to Amplitude Singularities and Back
Published • View PublicationBIB
The momentum amplituhedron is a positive geometry encoding tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills directly in spinor-helicity space. In this paper we classify all boundaries of the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ and explain how these boundaries are related to the expected factorization channels, and soft and collinear limits of tree amplitudes. Conversely, all physical singularities of tree amplitudes are encoded in this boundary stratification. Finally, we find that the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ has Euler characteristic equal to one, which provides a first step towards proving that it is homeomorphic to a ball.

The positive tropical Grassmannian, the hypersimplex, and the m=2 amplituhedron
The study of the moment map from the Grassmannian to the hypersimplex, and the relation between torus orbits and matroid polytopes, dates back to the foundational 1987 work of Gelfand-Goresky-MacPherson-Serganova. On the other hand, the amplituhedron is a very new object, defined by Arkani-Hamed-Trnka in connection with scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we discover a striking duality between the moment map $μ:Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}\toΔ_{k+1,n}$ from the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq0}_{k+1,n}$ to the hypersimplex, and the amplituhedron map $\tilde{Z}:Gr^{\geq0}_{k,n}\to\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ from $Gr^{\geq0}_{k,n}$ to the $m=2$ amplituhedron. We consider the positroid dissections of both objects, which informally, are subdivisions of $Δ_{k+1,n}$ (respectively, $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$) into a disjoint union of images of positroid cells of the positive Grassmannian. At first glance, $Δ_{k+1,n}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ seem very different - the former is an $(n-1)$-dimensional polytope, while the latter is a $2k$-dimensional non-polytopal subset of $Gr_{k,k+2}$. Nevertheless, we conjecture that positroid dissections of $Δ_{k+1,n}$ are in bijection with positroid dissections of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ via a map we call T-duality. We prove this conjecture for the (infinite) class of BCFW dissections and give additional experimental evidence. Moreover, we prove that the positive tropical Grassmannian is the secondary fan for the regular positroid subdivisions of the hypersimplex, and propose that it also controls the T-dual positroid subdivisions of the amplituhedron. Along the way, we prove that a matroid polytope is a positroid polytope if and only if all two-dimensional faces are positroid polytopes. Towards the goal of generalizing T-duality for higher $m$, we also define the momentum amplituhedron for any even $m$.
Causal Diamonds, Cluster Polytopes and Scattering Amplitudes

The "amplituhedron" for tree-level scattering amplitudes in the bi-adjoint $φ^3$ theory is given by the ABHY associahedron in kinematic space, which has been generalized to give a realization for all finite-type cluster algebra polytopes, labelled by Dynkin diagrams. In this letter we identify a simple physical origin for these polytopes, associated with an interesting (1+1)-dimensional causal structure in kinematic space, along with solutions to the wave equation in this kinematic "spacetime" with a natural positivity property. The notion of time evolution in this kinematic spacetime can be abstracted away to a certain "walk", associated with any acyclic quiver, remarkably yielding a finite cluster polytope for the case of Dynkin quivers. The ${\cal A}_{n{-}3},{\cal B}_{n{-}1}/{\cal C}_{n{-}1}$ and ${\cal D}_n$ polytopes are the amplituhedra for $n$-point tree amplitudes, one-loop tadpole diagrams, and full integrand of one-loop amplitudes. We also introduce a polytope $\bar{\cal D}_n$, which chops the ${\cal D}_n$ polytope in half along a symmetry plane, capturing one-loop amplitudes in a more efficient way.

The m=2 amplituhedron
The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n, k, m}$ is introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in the study of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. It is defined in terms of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. In this paper, we show that the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n, k, m}$ for $m=2$ admits a triangulation. Our collection of cells is constructed via BCFW-type recursion. We also provide a diagrammatic interpretation of our construction.

On the Boundaries of the m=2 Amplituhedron
Amplituhedra $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}^{(m)}$ are geometric objects of great interest in modern mathematics and physics: for mathematicians they are combinatorially rich generalizations of polygons and polytopes, based on the notion of positivity; for physicists, the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}^{(4)}_{n,k}$ encodes the scattering amplitudes of the planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In this paper we study the structure of boundaries for the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}^{(2)}$. We classify all boundaries of all dimensions and provide their graphical enumeration. We find that the boundary poset for the amplituhedron is Eulerian and show that the Euler characteristic of the amplituhedron equals one. This provides an initial step towards proving that the amplituhedron for $m=2$ is homeomorphic to a closed ball.

Basis shape loci and the positive Grassmannian
A basis shape locus takes as input data a zero/nonzero pattern in an $n \times k$ matrix, which is equivalent to a presentation of a transversal matroid. The locus is defined as the set of points in the Grassmannian of $k$ planes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are the row space of a matrix with the prescribed zero/nonzero pattern. We show that this locus depends only on the transversal matroid, not on the specific presentation. When a transversal matroid is a positroid, the closure of its basis shape locus is the associated positroid variety. We give a sufficient, and conjecturally necessary, condition for when a transversal matroid is a positroid. Finally, we discus applications to two programs for computing scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory: one trying to prove that projections of certain positroid cells triangulate the amplituhedron, and another using Wilson loop diagrams.

Parity duality for the amplituhedron
Published in Compositio Math. 156 (2020) 2207-2262 • View PublicationBIB
The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is a certain subset of the Grassmannian introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to study scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Confirming a conjecture of the first author, we show that when $m$ is even, a collection of affine permutations yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(k+m,n)$ if and only if the collection of their inverses yields a triangulation of $\mathcal A_{n,n-m-k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in\operatorname{Gr}_{>0}(n-k,n)$. We prove this duality using the twist map of Marsh and Scott. We also show that this map preserves the canonical differential forms associated with the corresponding positroid cells, and hence obtain a parity duality for amplituhedron differential forms.

Hyperbolic Geometry and Amplituhedra in 1+2 dimensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, the existence of an Amplituhedron for tree level amplitudes in the bi-adjoint scalar field theory has been proved by Arkhani-Hamed et al. We argue that hyperbolic geometry constitutes a natural framework to address the study of positive geometries in moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, and thus to try to extend this achievement beyond tree level. In this paper we begin an exploration of these ideas starting from the simplest example of hyperbolic geometry, the hyperbolic plane. The hyperboloid model naturally guides us to re-discover the moduli space Associahedron, and a new version of its kinematical avatar. As a by-product we obtain a solution to the scattering equations which can be interpreted as a special case of the two well known solutions in terms of spinor-helicity formalism. The construction is done in $1+2$ dimensions and this makes harder to understand how to extract the amplitude from the dlog of the space time Associahedron. Nevertheless, we continue the investigation accommodating a loop momentum in the picture. By doing this we are led to another polytope called Halohedron, which was already known to mathematicians. We argue that the Halohedron fulfils many criteria that make it plausible to be understood as a 1-loop Amplituhedron for the cubic theory. Furthermore, the hyperboloid model again allows to understand that a kinematical version of the Halohedron exists and is related to the one living in moduli space by a simple generalisation of the tree level map.

Scattering Forms and the Positive Geometry of Kinematics, Color and the Worldsheet
Published • View PublicationBIB
The search for a theory of the S-Matrix has revealed surprising geometric structures underlying amplitudes ranging from the worldsheet to the amplituhedron, but these are all geometries in auxiliary spaces as opposed to kinematic space where amplitudes live. In this paper, we propose a novel geometric understanding of amplitudes for a large class of theories. The key is to think of amplitudes as differential forms directly on kinematic space. We explore this picture for a wide range of massless theories in general spacetime dimensions. For the bi-adjoint cubic scalar, we establish a direct connection between its "scattering form" and a classic polytope--the associahedron--known to mathematicians since the 1960's. We find an associahedron living naturally in kinematic space, and the tree amplitude is simply the "canonical form" associated with this "positive geometry". Basic physical properties such as locality, unitarity and novel "soft" limits are fully determined by the geometry. Furthermore, the moduli space for the open string worldsheet has also long been recognized as an associahedron. We show that the scattering equations act as a diffeomorphism between this old "worldsheet associahedron" and the new "kinematic associahedron", providing a geometric interpretation and novel derivation of the bi-adjoint CHY formula. We also find "scattering forms" on kinematic space for Yang-Mills and the Non-linear Sigma Model, which are dual to the color-dressed amplitudes despite having no explicit color factors. This is possible due to a remarkable fact--"Color is Kinematics"--whereby kinematic wedge products in the scattering forms satisfy the same Jacobi relations as color factors. Finally, our scattering forms are well-defined on the projectivized kinematic space, a property that provides a geometric origin for color-kinematics duality.
Decompositions of amplituhedra

The (tree) amplituhedron A(n,k,m) is the image in the Grassmannian Gr(k,k+m) of the totally nonnegative part of Gr(k,n), under a (map induced by a) linear map which is totally positive. It was introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to give a geometric basis for the computation of scattering amplitudes in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In the case relevant to physics (m=4), there is a collection of recursively-defined 4k-dimensional BCFW cells in the totally nonnegative part of Gr(k,n), whose images conjecturally "triangulate" the amplituhedron--that is, their images are disjoint and cover a dense subset of A(n,k,4). In this paper, we approach this problem by first giving an explicit (as opposed to recursive) description of the BCFW cells. We then develop sign-variational tools which we use to prove that when k=2, the images of these cells are disjoint in A(n,k,4). We also conjecture that for arbitrary even m, there is a decomposition of the amplituhedron A(n,k,m) involving precisely M(k, n-k-m, m/2) top-dimensional cells (of dimension km), where M(a,b,c) is the number of plane partitions contained in an a x b x c box. This agrees with the fact that when m=4, the number of BCFW cells is the Narayana number N(n-3, k+1).

Unwinding the Amplituhedron in Binary
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present new, fundamentally combinatorial and topological characterizations of the amplituhedron. Upon projecting external data through the amplituhedron, the resulting configuration of points has a specified (and maximal) generalized 'winding number'. Equivalently, the amplituhedron can be fully described in binary: canonical projections of the geometry down to one dimension have a specified (and maximal) number of 'sign flips' of the projected data. The locality and unitarity of scattering amplitudes are easily derived as elementary consequences of this binary code. Minimal winding defines a natural 'dual' of the amplituhedron. This picture gives us an avatar of the amplituhedron purely in the configuration space of points in vector space (momentum-twistor space in the physics), a new interpretation of the canonical amplituhedron form, and a direct bosonic understanding of the scattering super-amplitude in planar N = 4 SYM as a differential form on the space of physical kinematical data.
