Compatibility fans for graphical nested complexes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 150:36-107, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Graph associahedra are natural generalizations of the classical associahedra. They provide polytopal realizations of the nested complex of a graph $G$, defined as the simplicial complex whose vertices are the tubes (i.e. connected induced subgraphs) of $G$ and whose faces are the tubings (i.e. collections of pairwise nested or non-adjacent tubes) of $G$. The constructions of M. Carr and S. Devadoss, of A. Postnikov, and of A. Zelevinsky for graph associahedra are all based on the nested fan which coarsens the normal fan of the permutahedron. In view of the combinatorial and geometric variety of simplicial fan realizations of the classical associahedra, it is tempting to search for alternative fans realizing graphical nested complexes. Motivated by the analogy between finite type cluster complexes and graphical nested complexes, we transpose in this paper S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky's construction of compatibility fans from the former to the latter setting. For this, we define a compatibility degree between two tubes of a graph $G$. Our main result asserts that the compatibility vectors of all tubes of $G$ with respect to an arbitrary maximal tubing on $G$ support a complete simplicial fan realizing the nested complex of $G$. In particular, when the graph $G$ is reduced to a path, our compatibility degree lies in $\{-1,0,1\}$ and we recover F. Santos' Catalan many simplicial fan realizations of the associahedron.
Toric graph associahedra and compactifications of $M_{0,n}$
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics (2016) Vol. 43 Issue 1 pp 139-151 • View PublicationBIB
To any graph $G$ one can associate a toric variety $X(\mathcal{P}G)$, obtained as a blowup of projective space along coordinate subspaces corresponding to connected subgraphs of $G$. The polytope of this toric variety is the graph associahedron of $G$, a class of polytopes that includes the permutohedron, associahedron, and stellahedron. We show that the space $X(\mathcal{P}{G})$ is isomorphic to a Hassett compactification of $M_{0,n}$ precisely when $G$ is an iterated cone over a discrete set. This may be viewed as a generalization of the well-known fact that the Losev--Manin moduli space is isomorphic to the toric variety associated to the permutohedron.

Graph properties of graph associahedra
Published in Sém. Lothar. Combin., B73d, 31 pp., 2015 • Search Publication
A graph associahedron is a simple polytope whose face lattice encodes the nested structure of the connected subgraphs of a given graph. In this paper, we study certain graph properties of the 1-skeleta of graph associahedra, such as their diameter and their Hamiltonicity. Our results extend known results for the classical associahedra (path associahedra) and permutahedra (complete graph associahedra). We also discuss partial extensions to the family of nestohedra.
Colorful Associahedra and Cyclohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Every n-edge colored n-regular graph G naturally gives rise to a simple abstract n-polytope, the colorful polytope of G, whose 1-skeleton is isomorphic to G. The paper describes colorful polytope versions of the associahedron and cyclohedron. Like their classical counterparts, the colorful associahedron and cyclohedron encode triangulations and flips, but now with the added feature that the diagonals of the triangulations are colored and adjacency of triangulations requires color preserving flips. The colorful associahedron and cyclohedron are derived as colorful polytopes from the edge colored graph whose vertices represent these triangulations and whose colors on edges represent the colors of flipped diagonals.

Which nestohedra are removahedra?
Published in Rev. Colombiana Mat., 51(1):21-42, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
A removahedron is a polytope obtained by deleting inequalities from the facet description of the classical permutahedron. Relevant examples range from the associahedra to the permutahedron itself, which raises the natural question to characterize which nestohedra can be realized as removahedra. In this note, we show that the nested complex of any connected building set closed under intersection can be realized as a removahedron. We present two different complementary proofs: one based on the building trees and the nested fan, and the other based on Minkowski sums of dilated faces of the standard simplex. In general, this closure condition is sufficient but not necessary to obtain removahedra. However, we show that it is also necessary to obtain removahedra from graphical building sets, and that it is equivalent to the corresponding graph being chordful (i.e. any cycle induces a clique).

The diameter of type D associahedra and the non-leaving-face property
Published in European J. Combin., 51: 109-124, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
Generalized associahedra were introduced by S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky in connection to finite type cluster algebras. Following recent work of L. Pournin in types $A$ and $B$, this paper focuses on geodesic properties of generalized associahedra. We prove that the graph diameter of the $n$-dimensional associahedron of type $D$ is precisely $2n-2$ for all $n$ greater than $1$. Furthermore, we show that all type $BCD$ associahedra have the non-leaving-face property, that is, any geodesic connecting two vertices in the graph of the polytope stays in the minimal face containing both. This property was already proven by D. Sleator, R. Tarjan and W. Thurston for associahedra of type $A$. In contrast, we present relevant examples related to the associahedron that do not always satisfy this property.

Alexander Duality and Rational Associahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recent pair of papers of Armstrong, Loehr, and Warrington and Armstrong, Williams, and the author initiated the systematic study of {\em rational Catalan combinatorics} which is a generalization of Fuss-Catalan combinatorics (which is in turn a generalization of classical Catalan combinatorics). The latter paper gave two possible models for a rational analog of the associahedron which attach simplicial complexes to any pair of coprime positive integers a < b. These complexes coincide up to the Fuss-Catalan level of generality, but in general one may be a strict subcomplex of the other. Verifying a conjecture of Armstrong, Williams, and the author, we prove that these complexes agree up to homotopy and, in fact, that one complex collapses onto the other. This reconciles the two competing models for rational associahedra. As a corollary, we get that the involution (a < b) \longleftrightarrow (b-a < b) on pairs of coprime positive integers manifests itself topologically as Alexander duality of rational associahedra. This collapsing and Alexander duality are new features of rational Catalan combinatorics which are invisible at the Fuss-Catalan level of generality.

Signed tree associahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
An associahedron is a polytope whose vertices correspond to the triangulations of a convex polygon and whose edges correspond to flips between them. A particularly elegant realization of the associahedron, due to S. Shnider and S. Sternberg and popularized by J.-L. Loday, has been generalized in two directions: on the one hand by A. Postnikov to obtain a realization of the graph associahedra of M. Carr and S. Devadoss, and on the other hand by C. Hohlweg and C. Lange to obtain multiple realizations of the associahedron parametrized by a sequence of signs. The goal of this paper is to unify and extend these two constructions to signed tree associahedra. We define the notions of signed tubes and signed nested sets on a vertex-signed tree, generalizing the classical notions of tubes and nested sets for unsigned trees. The resulting signed nested complexes are all simplicial spheres, but they are not necessarily isomorphic, even if they arise from signed trees with the same underlying unsigned structure. We then construct a signed tree associahedron realizing the signed nested complex, obtained by removing certain well-chosen facets from the classical permutahedron. We study relevant properties of its normal fan and of certain orientations of its 1-skeleton, in connection to the braid arrangement and to the weak order. Our main tool, both for combinatorial and geometric perspectives, is the notion of spines on a vertex-signed tree, which extend the families of Schröder and binary search trees.

Associahedra via spines
Published in Combinatorica, 38(2):443-486, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
An associahedron is a polytope whose vertices correspond to triangulations of a convex polygon and whose edges correspond to flips between them. Using labeled polygons, C. Hohlweg and C. Lange constructed various realizations of the associahedron with relevant properties related to the symmetric group and the classical permutahedron. We introduce the spine of a triangulation as its dual tree together with a labeling and an orientation. This notion extends the classical understanding of the associahedron via binary trees, introduces a new perspective on C. Hohlweg and C. Lange's construction closer to J.-L. Loday's original approach, and sheds light upon the combinatorial and geometric properties of the resulting realizations of the associahedron. It also leads to noteworthy proofs which shorten and simplify previous approaches.
Convex Polytopes from Nested Posets
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 43 (2015) 229 - 248 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the graph associahedron KG, a polytope whose face poset is based on connected subgraphs of G, we consider the notion of associativity and tubes on posets. This leads to a new family of simple convex polytopes obtained by iterated truncations. These generalize graph associahedra and nestohedra, even encompassing notions of nestings on CW-complexes. However, these poset associahedra fall in a different category altogether than generalized permutohedra.
Rational associahedra and noncrossing partitions

Each positive rational number x>0 can be written uniquely as x=a/(b-a) for coprime positive integers 0<a<b. We will identify x with the pair (a,b). In this paper we define for each positive rational x>0 a simplicial complex \Ass(x)=\Ass(a,b) called the {\sf rational associahedron}. It is a pure simplicial complex of dimension a-2, and its maximal faces are counted by the {\sf rational Catalan number} \Cat(x)=\Cat(a,b):=\frac{(a+b-1)!}{a!\,b!}. The cases (a,b)=(n,n+1) and (a,b)=(n,kn+1) recover the classical associahedron and its "Fuss-Catalan" generalization studied by Athanasiadis-Tzanaki and Fomin-Reading. We prove that \Ass(a,b) is shellable and give nice product formulas for its h-vector (the {\sf rational Narayana numbers}) and f-vector (the {\sf rational Kirkman numbers}). We define \Ass(a,b) via {\sf rational Dyck paths}: lattice paths from (0,0) to (b,a) staying above the line y = \frac{a}{b}x. We also use rational Dyck paths to define a rational generalization of noncrossing perfect matchings of [2n]. In the case (a,b) = (n, mn+1), our construction produces the noncrossing partitions of [(m+1)n] in which each block has size m+1.

Coloring Planar Graphs via Colored Paths in the Associahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hassler Whitney's theorem of 1931 reduces the task of finding proper, vertex 4-colorings of triangulations of the 2-sphere to finding such colorings for the class \(\mathfrak H\) of triangulations of the 2-sphere that have a Hamiltonian circuit. This has been used by Whitney and others from 1936 to the present to find equivalent reformulations of the 4 Color Theorem (4CT). Recently there has been activity to try to use some of these reformuations to find a shorter proof of the 4CT. Every triangulation in \(\mathfrak H\) has a dual graph that is a union of two binary trees with the same number of leaves. Elements of a group known as Thompson's group \(F\) are equivalence classes of pairs of binary trees with the same number of leaves. This paper explores this resemblance and finds that some recent reformulations of the 4CT are essentially attempting to color elements of \(\mathfrak H\) using expressions of elements of \(F\) as words in a certain generating set for \(F\). From this, we derive information about not just the colorability of certain elements of \(\mathfrak H\), but also about all possible ways to color these elements. Because of this we raise (and answer some) questions about enumeration. We also bring in an extension \(E\) of the group \(F\) and ask whether certain elements ``parametrize'' the set of all colorings of the elements of \(\mathfrak H\) that use all four colors.

The diameter of associahedra
Published in Adv. Math. 259, 13-42 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
It is proven here that the diameter of the d-dimensional associahedron is 2d-4 when d is greater than 9. Two maximally distant vertices of this polytope are explicitly described as triangulations of a convex polygon, and their distance is obtained using combinatorial arguments. This settles two problems posed about twenty-five years ago by Daniel Sleator, Robert Tarjan, and William Thurston.

Minkowski Decomposition of Associahedra and Related Combinatorics
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 50:4 (2013), 903-939 • View PublicationBIB
Realisations of associahedra with linearly non-isomorphic normal fans can be obtained by alteration of the right-hand sides of the facet-defining inequalities from a classical permutahedron. These polytopes can be expressed as Minkowski sums and differences of dilated faces of a standard simplex as described by Ardila, Benedetti & Doker (2010). The coefficients $y_I$ of such a Minkowski decomposition can be computed by Möbius inversion if tight right-hand sides $z_I$ are known not just for the facet-defining inequalities of the associahedron but also for all inequalities of the permutahedron that are redundant for the associahedron. We show for certain families of these associahedra: (a) how to compute tight values $z_I$ for the redundant inequalities from the values $z_I$ for the facet-defining inequalities; (b) the computation of the values $y_I$ of Ardila, Benedetti & Doker can be significantly simplified and at most four values $z_{a(I)}$, $z_{b(I)}$, $z_{c(I)}$ and $z_{d(I)}$ are needed to compute $y_I$; (c) the four indices $a(I)$, $b(I)$, $c(I)$ and $d(I)$ are determined by the geometry of the normal fan of the associahedron and are described combinatorially; (d) a combinatorial interpretation of the values $y_I$ using a labeled $n$-gon. This last result is inspired from similar interpretations for vertex coordinates originally described originally by J.-L. Loday and well-known interpretations for the $z_I$-values of facet-defining inequalities.

Permutahedra and Associahedra: Generalized associahedra from the geometry of finite reflection groups

This is a chapter in an upcoming Tamari Festscrift. Permutahedra are a class of convex polytopes arising naturally from the study of finite reflection groups, while generalized associahedra are a class of polytopes indexed by finite reflection groups. We present the intimate links those two classes of polytopes share.

Brick polytopes of spherical subword complexes and generalized associahedra
Published in Adv. Math., 276:1-61, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the brick polytope of V. Pilaud and F. Santos to spherical subword complexes for finite Coxeter groups. This construction provides polytopal realizations for a certain class of subword complexes containing all cluster complexes of finite types. For the latter, the brick polytopes turn out to coincide with the known realizations of generalized associahedra, thus opening new perspectives on these constructions. This new approach yields in particular the vertex description of generalized associahedra, a Minkowski sum decomposition into Coxeter matroid polytopes, and a combinatorial description of the exchange matrix of any cluster in a finite type cluster algebra.

Polyhedral models for generalized associahedra via Coxeter elements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the theory of cluster algebras, F. Chapoton, S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky associated to each finite type root system a simple convex polytope called \emph{generalized associahedron}. They provided an explicit realization of this polytope associated with a bipartite orientation of the corresponding Dynkin diagram. In the first part of this paper, using the parametrization of cluster variables by their $g$-vectors explicitly computed by S.-W. Yang and A. Zelevinsky, we generalize the original construction to any orientation. In the second part we show that our construction agrees with the one given by C. Hohlweg, C. Lange, and H. Thomas in the setup of Cambrian fans developed by N. Reading and D. Speyer.

Realizing the associahedron: Mysteries and questions

In this note, we describe three -- concerning special realizations with the vertices on a sphere, the space of all possible realizations, and possible realizations of the multiassociahedron.
