Links Between Sums Over Paths in Bernoulli's Triangles and the Fibonacci Numbers

We investigate paths in Bernoulli's triangles, and derive several relations linking the partial sums of binomial coefficients to the Fibonacci numbers.
On some combinatorial formulae coming from Hessian Topology
Published • View PublicationBIB
The interaction between combinatorics and algebraic and differential geometry is very strong. While researching a problem of Hessian topology, we came across a series of identities of binomial coefficients, which are useful for proving a topological property of certain spaces whose elements are graphs of a class of hyperbolic polynomials. These identities are proven by different methods in combinatorics.

Combinatorics and Representation Theory for Generalized Permutohedra I: Simplicial Plates
In this paper, we announce results from our thesis, which studies for the first time the categorification of the theory of generalized permutohedra. The vector spaces in the categorification are tightly constrained by certain continuity relations which appeared in physics in the mid 20th century. We describe here the action of the symmetric group on the vector spaces in this categorification. Generalized permutohedra are replaced by vector spaces of characteristic functions of polyhedral cones about faces of permutohedra, called plates, due to A. Ocneanu. The symmetric group acts on plates by coordinate permutation. In combinatorics, the Eulerian numbers count the number of permutations with a given number of ascent and descents. The classical Worpitzky identity expands a power $r^p$ as a sum of Eulerian numbers, with binomial coefficients. In our thesis, for the main result we generalize the classical Worpitzky identity to an isomorphism of symmetric group modules, corresponding geometrically to the tiling of a scaled simplex by unit hypersimplices. In the categorification, the volume of a hypersimplex is replaced by the complex-linear dimension of a vector space associated to it. The main technical aspect of the proof of the character formula for the simplex involves a partition of unity of a commutative algebra of translations on a discrete torus, and a certain modular Diophantine equation. A detailed paper is in preparation.

Sums of products of binomial coefficients mod 2 and run length transforms of sequences
Published in INTEGERS 22 (2022), #A81 • View PublicationBIB
We study properties of functions of binomial coefficients mod 2 and derive a set of recurrence relations for sums of products of binomial coefficients mod 2. We show that they result in sequences that are the run length transforms of well known basic sequences. In particular, we obtain formulas for the run length transform of the positive integers, Fibonacci numbers, extended Lucas numbers and Narayana's cows sequence.
Bisecting binomial coefficients
In this paper, we deal with the problem of bisecting binomial coefficients. We find many (previously unknown) infinite classes of integers which admit nontrivial bisections, and a class with only trivial bisections. As a byproduct of this last construction, we show conjectures Q2 and Q4 of Cusick and Li. We next find several bounds for the number of nontrivial bisections and further compute (using a supercomputer) the exact number of such bisections for n <= 51.

Asymptotic approximation of central binomial coefficients with rigorous error bounds
Published in Open J. Math. Sci. 5 (2021), 380-386 • View PublicationBIB
We show that a well-known asymptotic series for the logarithm of the central binomial coefficient is strictly enveloping in the sense of Pólya and Szegö, so the error incurred in truncating the series is of the same sign as the next term, and is bounded in magnitude by that term. We consider closely related asymptotic series for Binet's function, for $\lnΓ(z+1/2)$, and for the Riemann-Siegel theta function, and make some historical remarks.

Base-$b$ analogues of classic combinatorial objects
We study the properties of the base-$b$ binomial coefficient defined by Jiu and the second author, introduced in the context of a digital binomial theorem. After introducing a general summation formula, we derive base-$b$ analogues of the Stirling numbers of the second kind, the Fibonacci numbers and the classical exponential function.

Some Explicit Formulas for Sums Involving the Binomial Coefficients with the Falling Factorial
Spivey presented a new approach to evaluate combinatorial sums by using finite differences. We present some closed forms for sums involving the binomial coefficients, Fibonacci and Lucas numbers in terms of the falling factorial.
A proof of the peak polynomial positivity conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a permutation $π=π_1π_2\cdots π_n \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ has a peak at index $i$ if $π_{i-1} < π_i > π_{i+1}$. Let $\mathcal{P}(π)$ denote the set of indices where $π$ has a peak. Given a set $S$ of positive integers, we define $\mathcal{P}_S(n)=\{π\in\mathfrak{S}_n:\mathcal{P}(π)=S\}$. In 2013 Billey, Burdzy, and Sagan showed that for subsets of positive integers $S$ and sufficiently large $n$, $| \mathcal{P}_S(n)|=p_S(n)2^{n-|S|-1}$ where $p_S(x)$ is a polynomial depending on $S$. They gave a recursive formula for $p_S(x)$ involving an alternating sum, and they conjectured that the coefficients of $p_S(x)$ expanded in a binomial coefficient basis centered at $\max(S)$ are all nonnegative. In this paper we introduce a new recursive formula for $|\mathcal{P}_S(n)|$ without alternating sums, and we use this recursion to prove that their conjecture is true.

Linear transformations and strong $q$-log-concavity for certain combinatorial triangle
It is well-known that the binomial transformation preserves the log-concavity property and log-convexity property. Let $\binom{a+n}{b+k}$ be the binomial coefficients and $\binom{n,k}{j}$ be defined by $(b_0+b_1x+\cdots+b_kx^{k})^n:=\sum_{j=0}^{kn}\binom{n,k}{j}x^j,$ where the sequence $(b_i)_{0\leq i\leq k}$ is log-concave. In this paper, we prove that the linear transformation $$y_n(q)=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{a+n}{b+k}x_k(q)$$ preserves the strong $q$-log-concavity property for any fixed nonnegative integers $a$ and $b$, which strengthens and gives a simple proof of results of Ehrenborg and Steingrimsson, and Wang, respectively, on linear transformations preserving the log-concavity property. We also show that the linear transformation $$y_n=\sum_{i=0}^{kn}\binom{n,k}{j}x_i$$ not only preserves the log-concavity property, but also preserves the log-convexity property, which extends the results of Ahmia and Belbachir about the $s$-triangle transformation preserving the log-convexity property and log-concavity property. Let $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n, k\geq0}$ be an infinite lower triangular array of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence \begin{eqnarray*}\label{re} A_{n,k}(q)=f_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{n,k}(q)\,A_{n-1,k+1}(q), \end{eqnarray*} for $n\geq 1$ and $k\geq 0$, where $A_{0,0}(q)=1$, $A_{0,k}(q)=A_{0,-1}(q)=0$ for $k>0$. We present criterions for the strong $q$-log-concavity of the sequences in each row of $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n, k\geq0}$. As applications, we get the strong $q$-log-concavity or the log-concavity of the sequences in each row of many well-known triangular arrays, such as the Bell polynomials triangle, the Eulerian polynomials triangle and the Narayana polynomials triangle in a unified approach.

An explicit generating function arising in counting binomial coefficients divisible by powers of primes
Published in Acta Arith. 181 (2017), no. 1, 27-55 • View PublicationBIB
For a prime $p$ and nonnegative integers $j$ and $n$ let $\vartheta_p(j,n)$ be the number of entries in the $n$-th row of Pascal's triangle that are exactly divisible by $p^j$. Moreover, for a finite sequence $w=(w_{r-1}\cdots w_0)\neq (0,\ldots,0)$ in $\{0,\ldots,p-1\}$ we denote by $\lvert n\rvert_w$ the number of times that $w$ appears as a factor (contiguous subsequence) of the base-$p$ expansion $n=(n_{μ-1}\cdots n_0)_p$ of $n$. It follows from the work of Barat and Grabner (Digital functions and distribution of binomial coefficients, J. London Math. Soc. (2) 64(3), 2001), that $\vartheta_p(j,n)/\vartheta_p(0,n)$ is given by a polynomial $P_j$ in the variables $X_w$, where $w$ are certain finite words in $\{0,\ldots,p-1\}$, and each variable $X_w$ is set to $\lvert n\rvert_w$. This was later made explicit by Rowland (The number of nonzero binomial coefficients modulo $p^α$, J. Comb. Number Theory 3(1), 2011), independently from Barat and Grabner's work, and Rowland described and implemented an algorithm computing these polynomials $P_j$. In this paper, we express the coefficients of $P_j$ using generating functions, and we prove that these generating functions can be determined explicitly by means of a recurrence relation. Moreover, we prove that $P_j$ is uniquely determined, and we note that the proof of our main theorem also provides a new proof of its existence. Besides providing insight into the structure of the polynomials $P_j$, our results allow us to compute them in a very efficient way.

New identities for binary Krawtchouk polynomials, binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
We obtain new combinatorial identities for integral values of binary Krawtchouk polynomials $K^{2m}_p(x)$, $0\le p\le 2m$, by computing the characters of the $p$-exterior representations on certain elements of order 2 of $\mathrm{SO}(2m)$. From this identities, we deduce several new relations for binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers.

Algebraic independence of $G$-functions and congruences "à la Lucas"
We develop a new method for proving algebraic independence of $G$-functions. Our approach rests on the following observation: $G$-functions do not always come with a single linear differential equation, but also sometimes with an infinite family of linear difference equations associated with the Frobenius that are obtained by reduction modulo prime ideals. When these linear difference equations have order one, the coefficients of the $G$-function satisfy congruences reminiscent of a classical theorem of Lucas on binomial coefficients. We use this to derive a Kolchin-like algebraic independence criterion. We show the relevance of this criterion by proving, using p-adic tools, that many classical families of $G$-functions turn out to satisfy congruences "à la Lucas".

Continuous Analogues for the Binomial Coefficients and the Catalan Numbers

Using techniques from the theories of convex polytopes, lattice paths, and indirect influences on directed manifolds, we construct continuous analogues for the binomial coefficients and the Catalan numbers. Our approach for constructing these analogues can be applied to a wide variety of combinatorial sequences. As an application we develop a continuous analogue for the binomial distribution.
Free subgroup numbers modulo prime powers: the non-periodic case
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 154 (2018), 49-76 • View PublicationBIB
In [J. Algebra 452 (2016), 372-389], we characterise when the sequence of free subgroup numbers of a finitely generated virtually free group $Γ$ is ultimately periodic modulo a given prime power. Here, we show that, in the remaining cases, in which the sequence of free subgroup numbers is not ultimately periodic modulo a given prime power, the number of free subgroups of index~$λ$ in $Γ$ is - essentially - congruent to a binomial coefficient times a rational function in $λ$ modulo a power of a prime that divides a certain invariant of the group $Γ$, respectively to a binomial sum involving such numbers. These results, apart from their intrinsic interest, in particular allow for a much more efficient computation of congruences for free subgroup numbers in these cases compared to the direct recursive computation of these numbers implied by the generating function results in [J. London Math. Soc. (2) 44 (1991), 75-94].

On Binomial Identities in Arbitrary Bases

We extend the digital binomial identity as given by Nguyen el al. to an identity in an arbitrary base $b$, by introducing the $b-$ary binomial coefficients. We then study the properties of these coefficients such as orthogonality, a link to Lucas' theorem and the corresponding $b-$ary Pascal triangles.
