Z.-W. Sun introduced three kinds of numbers: \begin{align*}S_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}(2k+1),\qquad s_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}\frac{1}{2k-1}, \end{align*} and $S_n^{+}=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}(2k+1)^2$. In this paper we mainly prove that \begin{align*} 4\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}kS_k\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}s_k\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}S_k^{+}\equiv 0\pmod{n^2}\quad\text{for $n\geqslant 1$}, \end{align*} by establishing some binomial coefficient identities, such as \begin{align*} 4\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}kS_k=n^2\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{1}{k+1}{2k\choose k}(6k{n-1\choose k}^2+{n-1\choose k}{n-1\choose k+1}). \end{align*} This confirms several recent conjectures of Z.-W. Sun.

Given a permutation $π=π_1π_2\cdots π_n \in \mathfrak{S}_n$, we say an index $i$ is a peak if $π_{i-1} < π_i > π_{i+1}$. Let $P(π)$ denote the set of peaks of $π$. Given any set $S$ of positive integers, define ${\mathcal{P}_S(n)=\{π\in \mathfrak{S}_n:P(π)=S\}}$. Billey-Burdzy-Sagan showed that for all fixed subsets of positive integers $S$ and sufficiently large $n$, $|\mathcal{P}_S(n)|=p_S(n)2^{n-|S|-1}$ for some polynomial $p_S(x)$ depending on $S$. They conjectured that the coefficients of $p_S(x)$ expanded in a binomial coefficient basis centered at $\max(S)$ are all positive. We show that this is a consequence of a stronger conjecture that bounds the modulus of the roots of $p_S(x)$. Furthermore, we give an efficient explicit formula for peak polynomials in the binomial basis centered at $0$, which we use to identify many integer roots of peak polynomials along with certain inequalities and identities.

We present a lower bound on the Kronecker coefficients for tensor squares of the symmetric group via the characters of~$S_n$, which we apply to obtain various explicit estimates. Notably, we extend Sylvester's unimodality of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{n}{k}_q$ as polynomials in~$q$ to derive sharp bounds on the differences of their consecutive coefficients. We then derive effective asymptotic lower bounds for a wider class of Kronecker coefficients.

We define an overpartition analogue of Gaussian polynomials (also known as $q$-binomial coefficients) as a generating function for the number of overpartitions fitting inside the $M \times N$ rectangle. We call these new polynomials over Gaussian polynomials or over $q$-binomial coefficients. We investigate basic properties and applications of over $q$-binomial coefficients. In particular, via the recurrences and combinatorial interpretations of over q-binomial coefficients, we prove a Rogers-Ramaujan type partition theorem.
Some q-analogues of (super)congruences of Beukers, Van Hamme and Rodriguez-Villegas
For any odd prime p we obtain q-analogues of Van Hamme's supercongruence: $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}}{2k\choose k}^3\frac{1}{64^k} \equiv 0 \pmod{p^2} \quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 3\pmod 4, $$ and Rodriguez-Villegas' Beukers-like supercongruences involving products of three binomial coefficients. For example, we prove that \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}} {2k\brack k}_{q^2}^3 \frac{q^{2k}}{(-q^2;q^2)_k^2 (-q;q)_{2k}^2} &\equiv 0\pmod{[p]^2} \quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 3\pmod 4, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}}{2k\brack k}_{q^3}\frac{(q;q^3)_k (q^{2};q^3)_{k} q^{3k} }{ (q^{6};q^{6})_k^2 } &\equiv 0 \pmod{[p]^2}\quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 2\pmod{3}, \end{align*} where $[p]=1+q+\cdots+q^{p-1}$, $(a;q)_n=(1-a)(1-aq)\cdots(1-aq^{n-1})$, and ${n\brack k}_q$ denotes the q-binomial coefficient. Actually, our results give q-analogues of Z.-H. Sun's and Z.-W. Sun's generalizations of the above Beukers-like supercongruences. Our proof uses the theory of basic hypergeometric series including a new q-Clausen-type summation formula.
A Note on Extended Binomial Coefficients
We study the distribution of the extended binomial coefficients by deriving a complete asymptotic expansion with uniform error terms. We obtain the expansion from a local central limit theorem and we state all coefficients explicitly as sums of Hermite polynomials and Bernoulli numbers.
Equivalence classes of nodes in trees and rational generating functions
Let $c_n$ denote the number of nodes at a distance $n$ from the root of a rooted tree. A criterion for proving the rationality and computing the rational generating function of the sequence $\{c_n\}$ is described. This criterion is applied to counting the number of conjugacy classes of commuting tuples in finite groups and the number of isomorphism classes of representations of polynomial algebras over finite fields. The method for computing the rational generating functions, when applied to the study of point configurations in finite sets, gives rise to some classical combinatorial results on Bell numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind. When applied to the study of vector configurations in a finite vector space, it reveals a connection between counting such configurations and Gaussian binomial coefficients.
Generalising Tuenter's binomial sums

Tuenter [Fibonacci Quarterly 40 (2002), 175-180] and other authors have considered centred binomial sums of the form \[S_r(n) = \sum_k \binom{2n}{k}|n-k|^r,\] where $r$ and $n$ are non-negative integers. We consider sums of the form \[U_r(n) = \sum_k \binom{n}{k}|n/2-k|^r\] which are a generalisation of Tuenter's sums as $S_r(n) = U_r(2n)$ but $U_r(n)$ is also well-defined for odd arguments $n$. $U_r(n)$ may be interpreted as a moment of a symmetric Bernoulli random walk with $n$ steps. The form of $U_r(n)$ depends on the parities of both $r$ and $n$. In fact, $U_r(n)$ is the product of a polynomial (depending on the parities of $r$ and $n$) times a power of two or a binomial coefficient. In all cases the polynomials can be expressed in terms of Dumont-Foata polynomials. We give recurrence relations, generating functions and explicit formulas for the functions $U_r(n)$ and/or the associated polynomials.

In this paper we consider mixed volumes of combinations of hypersimplices. These numbers, called "mixed Eulerian numbers", were first considered by A. Postnikov and were shown to satisfy many properties related to Eulerian numbers, Catalan numbers, binomial coefficients, etc. We give a general combinatorial interpretation for mixed Eulerian numbers and prove the above properties combinatorially. In particular, we show that each mixed Eulerian number enumerates a certain set of permutations in $S_n$. We also prove several new properties of mixed Eulerian numbers using our methods. Finally, we consider a type $B$ analogue of mixed Eulerian numbers and give an analogous combinatorial interpretation for these numbers.

We present several upper and lower bounds on the Kronecker coefficients of the symmetric group. We prove $k$-stability of the Kronecker coefficients generalizing the (usual) stability, and giving a new upper bound. We prove a lower bound via the characters of $S_n$. We apply these and other results to generalize Sylvester's unimodality of the $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{n}{k}_q$ as polynomials in $q$: we derive explicit sharp bounds on the differences of their consecutive coefficients.
Restrictions of rainbow supercharacters

The maximal subgroup of unipotent upper-triangular matrices of the finite general linear groups are a fundamental family of $p$-groups. Their representation theory is well-known to be wild, but there is a standard supercharacter theory, replacing irreducible representations by super-representations, that gives us some control over its representation theory. While this theory has a beautiful underlying combinatorics built on set partitions, the structure constants of restricted super-representations remain mysterious. This paper proposes a new approach to solving the restriction problem by constructing natural intermediate modules that help "factor" the computation of the structure constants. We illustrate the technique by solving the problem completely in the case of rainbow supercharacters (and some generalizations). Along the way we introduce a new $q$-analogue of the binomial coefficients that depend on an underlying poset.
Associated Lah numbers and r-Stirling numbers
We introduce the associated Lah numbers. Some recurrence relations and convolution identities are established. An extension of the associated Stirling and Lah numbers to the r-Stirling and r-Lah numbers are also given. For all these sequences we give combinatorial interpretation, generating functions, recurrence relations, convolution identities. In the sequel, we develop a section on nested sums related to binomial coefficient.

Using the methodology of (rigorous) {\it experimental mathematics}, we give a simple and motivated solution to Zudilin's question concerning a $q$-analog of a problem posed by Asmus Schmidt about a certain binomial coefficients sum. Our method is based on two simple identities that can be automatically proved using the Zeilberger and $q$-Zeilberger algorithms. We further illustrate our method by proving two further binomial coefficients sums.

Pak and Panova recently proved that the $q$-binomial coefficient ${m+n \choose m}_q$ is a strictly unimodal polynomial in $q$ for $m,n \geq 8$, via the representation theory of the symmetric group. We give a direct combinatorial proof of their result by characterizing when a product of chains is strictly unimodal and then applying O'Hara's structure theorem for the partition lattice $L(m,n)$. In fact, we prove a stronger result: if $m, n \geq 8d$, and $2d \leq r \leq mn/2$, then the $r$-th rank of $L(m,n)$ has at least $d$ more elements that the next lower rank.

The class of generating functions for completely monotone sequences (moments of finite positive measures on $[0,1]$) has an elegant characterization as the class of Pick functions analytic and positive on $(-\infty,1)$. We establish this and another such characterization and develop a variety of consequences. In particular, we characterize generating functions for moments of convex and concave probability distribution functions on $[0,1]$. Also we provide a simple analytic proof that for any real $p$ and $r$ with $p>0$, the Fuss-Catalan or Raney numbers $\frac{r}{pn+r}\binom{pn+r}{n}$, $n=0,1,\ldots$ are the moments of a probability distribution on some interval $[0,τ]$ {if and only if} $p\ge1$ and $p\ge r\ge 0$. The same statement holds for the binomial coefficients $\binom{pn+r-1}n$, $n=0,1,\ldots$. A corrigendum (Trans. Amer. Math.Soc., to appear) has been included as an appendix, correcting gaps in the proof of Lemma 3.

We show that the distribution of the major index over the set of involutions in S_n that avoid the pattern 321 is given by the q-analogue of the n-th central binomial coefficient. The proof consists of a composition of three non-trivial bijections, one being the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, ultimately mapping those involutions with major index m into partitions of m whose Young diagram fits inside an n/2 by n/2 box. We also obtain a refinement that keeps track of the descent set, and we deduce an analogous result for the comajor index of 123-avoiding involutions.

Consider a system of \(n\) players in which each initially starts on a different team. At each time step, we select an individual winner and an individual loser randomly and the loser joins the winner's team. The resulting Markov chain and stochastic matrix clearly have one absorbing state, in which all players are on the same team, but the combinatorics along the way are surprisingly elegant. The expected number of time steps until each team is eliminated is a ratio of binomial coefficients. When a team is eliminated, the probabilities that the players are configured in various partitions of \(n\) into \(t\) teams are given by multinomial coefficients. The expected value of the time to absorbtion is \((n-1)^2\) steps. The results depend on elementary combinatorics, linear algebra, and the theory of Markov chains.

For all positive integers n, we prove the following divisibility properties: $$(2n+3){2n\choose n} | 3{6n\choose 3n}{3n\choose n}, and (10n+3){3n\choose n} | 21{15n\choose 5n} {5n\choose n}.$$ This confirms two recent conjectures of Z.-W. Sun. Some similar divisibility properties are given. Moreover, we show that, for all positive integers m and n, the product $am{am+bm-1\choose am}{an+bn\choose an}$ is divisible by m+n. In fact, the latter result can be generalized to the q-binomial coefficients and q-integers case, which generalizes the positivity of q-Catalan numbers. We also propose several related conjectures.
