Multifold Convolutions, Generating Functions and 1d Random Walks
We consider multifold convolutions of a combinatorial sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$: namely, for each $k \in \N$ the $k$-fold convolution is $\mathcal{M}^{(k)}_n(\boldsymbol{a}) = \sum_{j_1+\dots+j_k=n} a_{j_1} \cdots a_{j_k}$. Let $C_n$ be the Catalan numbers, and let $B_n$ be the central binomial coefficients. Then for random Dyck paths or simple random walk bridges, the multifold convolutions give moments of returns to the origin, using the stars-and-bars problem. There are well-known explicit formulas for the multifold convolutions of $C_n$ and $B_n$. But even for combinatorial sequences $B_n^2$ and $B_n^3$, one may determine asymptotics of multifold convolutions for large $n$. We also discuss large deviations: In a second part of the paper we consider an elementary version of the circle method for calculating asymptotics using complex analysis.

Regions of Level $\ell$ of Catalan/Semiorder-Type Arrangements
In 1996, Stanley extended the classical Catalan arrangement and semiorder arrangement, which are called the Catalan-type arrangement $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}$ and the semiorder-type arrangement $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*$ in this paper. By establishing a labeled Dyck path model for the regions of $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*$, this paper explores several enumerative problems related to the number of regions of level $\ell$, denoted as $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$, which includes: (1) proving a Stirling convolution relation between $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$, refining a result by Stanley and Postnikov; (2) showing that the sequences$\left(r_\ell{(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})}\right)_{n\geq 0}$ and $(r_\ell {(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)})_{n\geq 0}$ exhibit properties of binomial type in the sense of Rota; (3) establishing the transformational significance of $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$ under Stanley's ESA framework: they can be viewed as transition matrices from binomial coefficients to their characteristic polynomials respectively. Further, we present two applications of the theories and methods: first, we provide a hyperplane arrangement counting interpretation of the two-parameter generalization of Fuss--Catalan numbers, which is closely related to the number of regions of level $\ell$ in the $m$-Catalan arrangement. Second, using labeled Dyck paths to depict the number of regions in the $m$-Catalan arrangement, we algorithmically provide the inverse mapping of the Fu, Wang, and Zhu mapping.

A sum rule for $r$-derangements obtained from the Cauchy product of exponential generating functions
We propose a sum rule for $r$-derangements (meaning that the elements are restricted to be in distinct cycles in the cycle decomposition) involving binomial coefficients. The identity, obtained using the Cauchy product of two exponential generating functions, generalizes a known relation for usual derangements.

Supercongruences via Beukers' method
Recently, using modular forms F. Beukers posed a unified method that can deal with a large number of supercongruences involving binomial coefficients and Apéry-like numbers. In this paper, we use Beukers' method to prove some conjectures of the first author concerning the congruences for $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{\binom{2k}k^3}{m^k}, \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k^2\binom{4k}{2k}}{m^k}, \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k\binom{3k}k\binom{6k}{3k}}{m^k}, \ \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}\frac{V_n}{m^n},\ \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}\frac{T_n}{m^n},\ \sum_{n=0}^{p-1}\frac{D_n}{m^n} $$ and $\sum_{n=0}^{p-1}(-1)^nA_n$ modulo $p^3$, where $p$ is an odd prime representable by some suitable binary quadratic form, $m$ is an integer not divisible by $p$, $V_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{2k}k^2\binom{2n-2k}{n-k}^2$, $T_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{2k}n^2$, $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{2k}k\binom{2n-2k}{n-k}$ and $A_n$ is the Apéry number given by $A_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk^2\binom{n+k}k^2$.
Periodic minimum in the count of binomial coefficients not divisible by a prime
The summatory function of the number of binomial coefficients not divisible by a prime is known to exhibit regular periodic oscillations, yet identifying the less regularly behaved minimum of the underlying periodic functions has been open for almost all cases. We propose an approach to identify such minimum in some generality, solving particularly a previous conjecture of B. Wilson [Asymptotic behavior of Pascal's triangle modulo a prime, Acta Arith. 83 (1998), pp. 105-116].

An integral representation of Catalan numbers using Malmstén's formula
In this article, we propose an integral expression of the Catalan numbers, based on Malmstén's definite-integral representation of $\ln\left[Γ(x)\right]$, $Γ$ being the usual Gamma function. The obtained expression is likely to yield new summations involving Catalan numbers or central binomial coefficients.

On $\mathbb N$-Coefficient Binomial Polynomiality of Hurwitz Numbers and Generalized Dessin Counting
In this paper, we study a certain type of Hurwitz numbers which count branched covers over the Riemann sphere admitting several branch points with fixed ramification types, one branch point with a fixed number of preimages, and one branch point with an arbitrary ramification type. We prove that the dependence of this kind of Hurwitz numbers on parts of the ramification type over the last point is a polynomial. Moreover, when expanding this polynomial in terms of products of binomial coefficients, we show that the coefficients are always non-negative integers via a pure combinatorial method. Our result generalizes the polynomiality in several models, including the one-part double Hurwitz numbers studied by Goulden-Jackson-Vakil, the one-part double Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles studied by Shadrin-Spitz-Zvonkine, and the generalized dessin counting.

$q$-Binomial Identities Finder
This paper presents a symbolic computation method for automatically transforming $q$-hypergeometric identities to $q$-binomial identities. Through this method, many previously proven $q$-binomial identities, including $q$-Saalschütz's formula and $q$-Suranyi's formula, are re-fund, and numerous new ones are discovered. Moreover, the generation of the identities is accompanied by the corresponding proofs. During the transformation process, different ranges of variable values and various combinations of $q$-Pochhammer symbols yield different identities. The algorithm maps variable constraints to positive elements in an ordered vector space and employs a backtracking method to provide the feasible variable constraints and $q$-binomial coefficient combinations for each step.

Supercongruences involving binomial coefficients and Euler polynomials
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $x$ be a $p$-adic integer. In this paper, we establish supercongruences for $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{x}{k}\binom{x+k}{k}(-4)^k}{(dk+1)\binom{2k}{k}}\pmod{p^2} $$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{x}{k}\binom{x+k}{k}(-2)^k}{(dk+1)\binom{2k}{k}}\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $d\in\{0,1,2\}$. As consequences, we extend some known results. For example, for $p>3$ we show $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{3k}{k}\left(\frac{4}{27}\right)^k\equiv\frac19+\frac89p+\frac{4}{27}pE_{p-2}\left(\frac13\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $E_n(x)$ denotes the Euler polynomial of degree $n$. This generalizes a known congruence of Z.-W. Sun.

On an upper bound for central binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
Recently, Agievich proposed an interesting upper bound on binomial coefficients in the de Moivre-Laplace form. In this article, we show that the latter bound, in the specific case of a central binomial coefficient, is larger than the one proposed by Sasvari and obtained using the Binet formula for the Gamma function. In addition, we provide the expression of the next-order bound and apply it to Catalan numbers $C_n$. The bounds are very close to the exact value, the difference decreasing with $n$ and with the order of the upper bound.

Series Associated with Harmonic Numbers, Fibonacci Numbers and Central Binomial Coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$
We find various series that involves the central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$, harmonic numbers and Fibonacci Numbers.\\ Contrary to the traditional hypergeometric function $_pF_q$ approach, our method utilizes a straightforward transformation to obtain new evaluations linked to Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio. Before the end of this paper, we also gave a new series representation for $ζ(2)$.

On the Gotzmann threshold of monomials
Let $R_n=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the $n$-variable polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $S_n$ denote the set of monomials in $R_n$. A monomial $u \in S_n$ is a \textit{Gotzmann monomial} if the Borel-stable monomial ideal $\langle u \rangle$ it generates in $R_n$ is a Gotzmann ideal. A longstanding open problem is to determine all Gotzmann monomials in $R_n$. Given $u_0 \in S_{n-1}$, its \textit{Gotzmann threshold} is the unique nonnegative integer $t_0=τ_n(u_0)$ such that $u_0x_n^t$ is a Gotzmann monomial in $R_n$ if and only if $t \ge t_0$. Currently, the function $τ_n$ is exactly known for $n \le 4$ only. We present here an efficient procedure to determine $τ_n(u_0)$ for all $n$ and all $u_0 \in S_{n-1}$. As an application, in the critical case $u_0=x_2^d$, we determine $τ_5(x_2^d)$ for all $d$ and we conjecture that for $n \ge 6$, $τ_n(x_2^d)$ is a polynomial in $d$ of degree $2^{n-2}$ and dominant term equal to that of the $(n-2)$-iterated binomial coefficient $$ \binom {\binom {\binom d2}2}{\stackrel{\cdots}2}. $$

Generalized polynomials and hyperplane functions in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$
For $p$ prime, let $\mathcal{H}^n$ be the linear span of characteristic functions of hyperplanes in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$. We establish new upper bounds on the dimension of $\mathcal{H}^n$ over $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, or equivalently, on the rank of point-hyperplane incidence matrices in $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$ over $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$. Our proof is based on a variant of the polynomial method using binomial coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z}$ as generalized polynomials. We also establish additional necessary conditions for a function on $(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^n$ to be an element of $\mathcal{H}^n$.

Interpolation Polynomials, Binomial Coefficients, and Symmetric Function Inequalities
Interpolation polynomials were introduced by Knop--Sahi in type $A$, and Okounkov in type $BC$. They are inhomogeneous polynomials whose top terms are Jack and Macdonald polynomials. Thus the expansion coefficients for the product of two interpolation polynomials, known as Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, generalize the corresponding coefficients for Jack/Macdonald polynomials. Special values of interpolation polynomials, known as binomial coefficients, arise in the binomial type expansions of Jack/Macdonald polynomials and Koornwinder polynomials. We prove a number of results for interpolation polynomials and the associated coefficients. These include positivity and monotonicity results for binomial coefficients, partial positivity results for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, and weighted sum formulas for both kinds of coefficients. As a special case of our results we obtain a new symmetric function inequality, which establishes a ``duality'' between Jack expansion positivity for symmetric functions, and the containment order on partitions, with respect to the shifted basis $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x;τ)$, where ${\bf1} =(1,\ldots,1)$ and $Ω_λ(x;τ)=P_λ(x;τ)/P_λ({\bf1};τ)$ is the normalized Jack polynomial. Our inequality can be seen as an analog of the inequalities of Cuttler--Greene--Skandera+Sra and Khare--Tao, which establish similar dualities between evaluation positivity on the positive orthant, and the dominance and weak dominance orders on partitions, with respect to the normalized Schur basis $Ω_λ(x)=s_λ(x)/s_λ({\bf1})$ and its shifted version $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x)$, respectively. In contrast to our result, the Jack versions of the two latter inequalities, although expected to hold, have not yet been proved.

Extension of Bressoud's generalization of Borwein's conjecture and some exact results
Published in The Ramanujan Journal (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we conjecture an extension to Bressoud's 1996 generalization of Borwein's famous 1990 conjecture. We then state a few infinite hierarchies of non-negative $q$-series identities which are interesting examples of our proposed conjecture and Bressoud's generalized conjecture. Finally, using certain positivity-preserving transformations for $q$-binomial coefficients, we prove the non-negativity of the infinite families.

Explicit expressions for the gamma vector leading to connections to upper/lower bounds and structural properties
We find an explicit formula for the gamma vector in terms of the input polynomial in a way that extends it to arbitrary polynomials. More specifically, we find explicit linear combination in terms of coefficients of the input polynomial (using Catalan numbers and binomial coefficients) and an expression involving the derivative of the input polynomial. The first expression suggests connections to common Coxeter group/noncrossing partition structures in existing gamma positivity examples. In the case where the input is the $h$-polynomial of a simplicial complex, this gives an interpretation of the gamma vector as a measure of differences in local and global contributions. We also apply them to connect signs/inequalities of (shifts of) the gamma vector to upper/lower bound conditions on coefficients of the input polynomial. Finally, we make use of the shape of the sums used to make these estimates and connections with intersection numbers to relate these properties of the gamma vector to algebraic structures (e.g. characteristic classes involved in existing log concavity and Schur positivity properties).
q-Parikh Matrices and q-deformed binomial coefficients of words
We have introduced a q-deformation, i.e., a polynomial in q with natural coefficients, of the binomial coefficient of two finite words u and v counting the number of occurrences of v as a subword of u. In this paper, we examine the q-deformation of Parikh matrices as introduced by Eğecioğlu in 2004. Many classical results concerning Parikh matrices generalize to this new framework: Our first important observation is that the elements of such a matrix are in fact q-deformations of binomial coefficients of words. We also study their inverses and as an application, we obtain new identities about q-binomials. For a finite word z and for the sequence $(p_n)_{n\ge 0}$ of prefixes of an infinite word, we show that the polynomial sequence $\binom{p_n}{z}_q$ converges to a formal series. We present links with additive number theory and k-regular sequences. In the case of a periodic word $u^ω$, we generalize a result of Salomaa: the sequence $\binom{u^n}{z}_q$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. Related to the theory of integer partition, we describe the growth and the zero set of the coefficients of the series associated with $u^ω$. Finally, we show that the minors of a q-Parikh matrix are polynomials with natural coefficients and consider a generalization of Cauchy's inequality. We also compare q-Parikh matrices associated with an arbitrary word with those associated with a canonical word $12\cdots k$ made of pairwise distinct symbols.

Introducing q-deformed binomial coefficients of words
Gaussian binomial coefficients are q-analogues of the binomial coefficients of integers. On the other hand, binomial coefficients have been extended to finite words, i.e., elements of the finitely generated free monoids. In this paper we bring together these two notions by introducing q-analogues of binomial coefficients of words. We study their basic properties, e.g., by extending classical formulas such as the q-Vandermonde and Manvel's et al. identities to our setting. As a consequence, we get information about the structure of the considered words: these q-deformations of binomial coefficients of words contain much richer information than the original coefficients. From an algebraic perspective, we introduce a q-shuffle and a family q-infiltration products for non-commutative formal power series. Finally, we apply our results to generalize a theorem of Eilenberg characterizing so-called p-group languages. We show that a language is of this type if and only if it is a Boolean combination of specific languages defined through q-binomial coefficients seen as polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$.
A Family of Low-Complexity Binary Codes with Constant Hamming Weights
In this paper, we focus on the design of binary constant weight codes that admit low-complexity encoding and decoding algorithms, and that have a size $M=2^k$. For every integer $\ell \geq 3$, we construct a $(n=2^\ell, M=2^{k_{\ell}}, d=2)$ constant weight code ${\cal C}[\ell]$ of weight $\ell$ by encoding information in the gaps between successive $1$'s. The code is associated with an integer sequence of length $\ell$ with a constraint defined as {\em anchor-decodability} that ensures low complexity for encoding and decoding. The complexity of the encoding is linear in the input size $k$, and that of the decoding is poly-logarithmic in the input size $n$, discounting the linear time spent on parsing the input. Both the algorithms do not require expensive computation of binomial coefficients, unlike the case in many existing schemes. Among codes generated by all anchor-decodable sequences, we show that ${\cal C}[\ell]$ has the maximum size with $k_{\ell} \geq \ell^2-\ell\log_2\ell + \log_2\ell - 0.279\ell - 0.721$. As $k$ is upper bounded by $\ell^2-\ell\log_2\ell +O(\ell)$ information-theoretically, the code ${\cal C}[\ell]$ is optimal in its size with respect to two higher order terms of $\ell$. In particular, $k_\ell$ meets the upper bound for $\ell=3$ and one-bit away for $\ell=4$. On the other hand, we show that ${\cal C}[\ell]$ is not unique in attaining $k_{\ell}$ by constructing an alternate code ${\cal \hat{C}}[\ell]$ again parameterized by an integer $\ell \geq 3$ with a different low-complexity decoder, yet having the same size $2^{k_{\ell}}$ when $3 \leq \ell \leq 7$. Finally, we also derive new codes by modifying ${\cal C}[\ell]$ that offer a wider range on blocklength and weight while retaining low complexity for encoding and decoding. For certain selected values of parameters, these modified codes too have an optimal $k$.
