Asymptotics of dimer coverings on free boundary rail-yard graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Rail-yard graphs are a general class of graphs introduced in \cite{bbccr} on which the random dimer coverings form Schur processes. We study asymptotic limits of random dimer coverings on rail yard graphs with free boundary conditions on both the left boundary and the right boundary (double-sided free boundary) when the mesh sizes of the graphs go to 0. Each dimer covering corresponds to a sequence of interlacing partitions starting with an arbitrary partition and ending in an arbitrary partition. Under the assumption that the probability of each dimer covering is proportional to the product of weights of present edges, we obtain the moment formula for the height function which includes an infinite product. By passing down to the scaling limit, we compute the limit shape (law of large numbers) of the rescaled height functions and prove the convergence of unrescaled height fluctuations to a diffeomorphic image of the restriction of the 0-boundary Gaussian free field (central limit theorem) on the upper half plane to a subset. Applications include the limit shape and height fluctuations for free boundary steep tilings as proposed in \cite{BCC17}. The technique to obtain these results is to analyze a class of Macdonald processes with dual specializations, subject to further complexities arising from the infinite product in the moment formula. We also obtain a new algorithm to sample double-sided free boundary dimer coverings on rail-yard graphs, which fulfills an open problem in \cite{bbbccv14}.

Switch Operators for the Six-Vertex Model
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new switch operator for the six-vertex model. This operator, derived from the Yang-Baxter equation, allows us to express the partition function with arbitrary boundaries in terms of a base case with domain wall boundary conditions. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for the factorial Schur functions and their generalizations. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between boundary conditions and partition functions in the six-vertex model.

Arctic curves of the 20V model on a triangle
Published • View Publication • BIB
We apply the Tangent Method of Colomo and Sportiello to predict the arctic curves of the Twenty Vertex model with specific domain wall boundary conditions on a triangle, in the Disordered phase, leading to a phase diagram with six types of frozen phases and one liquid one. The result relies on a relation to the Six Vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions and suitable weights, as a consequence of integrability. We also perform the exact refined enumeration of configurations.

Abelian sandpiles on Sierpinski gasket graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of the current work is to investigate structural properties of the sandpile group of a special class of self-similar graphs. More precisely, we consider Abelian sandpiles on Sierpinski gasket graphs and for the choice of normal boundary conditions, we give a characterization of the identity element and a recursive description of the sandpile group. Finally, we consider Abelian sandpile Markov chains on the aforementioned graphs and we improve the existing bounds on the speed of convergence to stationarity.

Graphene nanocones and Pascal matrices
I conjecture three identities for the determinant of adjacency matrices of graphene triangles and trapezia with Bloch (and more general) boundary conditions. For triangles, the parametric determinant is equal to the characteristic polynomial of the symmetric Pascal matrix. For trapezia it is equal to the determinant of a sub-matrix. Finally, the determinant of the tight binding matrix equals its permanent. The conjectures are supported by analytic evaluations and Mathematica, for moderate sizes. They establish connections with counting problems of partitions, lozenge tilings of hexagons, dense loops on a cylinder.

The topology of independence complexes of square grids
The independence complex of a graph G is a simplicial complex whose simplices are the independent sets in G. In the last couple of decades, the independence complexes of square grids (with various boundary conditions) have gained much attention because of their connections with the hard square model from statistical physics. In this article, we prove that if G is an $m\times n$ grid with open or cylindrical boundary condition then its independence complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. A part of this result settles a conjecture of Iriye.
Arctic curves of the $6$V model with partial DWBC and double Aztec rectangles
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 55 (2022) 305004 • View Publication • BIB
Previous numerical studies have shown that in the disordered and anti-ferroelectric phases the six-vertex ($6$V) model with partial domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) exhibits an arctic curve whose exact shape is unknown. The model is defined on a $s\times n$ square lattice ($s\leq n$). In this paper, we derive the analytic expression of the arctic curve, for $a=b=1$ and $c=\sqrt{2}$ ($Δ=0$), while keeping the ratio $s/n \,\in [0,1]$ as a free parameter. The computation relies on the tangent method. We also consider domino tilings of double Aztec rectangles and show via the tangent method that, for particular parameters, the arctic curve is identical to that of the $6$V model with partial DWBC. Our results are confirmed by extensive numerical simulations.

Clumsy Packing of Polyominoes in Finite Space
Published • View Publication • BIB
Clumsy packing is considered an inefficient packing, meaning we find the minimum number of objects we can pack into a space so that we can not pack any more object. Thus we are effectively spacing out the objects as far apart as possible so that we can not fit another object. In this paper we consider clumsy packing of polyominoes in a finite spaces which must consider boundary conditions. We examine rectangle, $L$, $T$, and plus polyominoes of various sizes.
On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

Limit shape of perfect matchings on rail-yard graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We obtain limit shape of perfect matchings on a large class of rail-yard graphs with right boundary condition given by the empty partition, and left boundary condition given by either by a staircase partition with constant density or a piecewise partition with densities either 1 or 0. We prove the parametric equations for the frozen boundary, and find conditions under which the frozen boundary is a cloud curve, or a union of disjoint cloud curves.
Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

GOE fluctuations for the maximum of the top path in alternating sign matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The six-vertex model is an important toy-model in statistical mechanics for two-dimensional ice with a natural parameter $Δ$. When $Δ= 0$, the so-called free-fermion point, the model is in natural correspondence with domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. Although this model is integrable for all $Δ$, there has been very little progress in understanding its statistics in the scaling limit for other values. In this work, we focus on the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions at $Δ= 1/2$, where it corresponds to alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We consider the level lines in a height function representation of ASMs. We show that the maximum of the topmost level line for a uniformly random ASMs has the GOE Tracy--Widom distribution after appropriate rescaling. A key ingredient in our proof is Zeilberger's proof of the ASM conjecture. As far as we know, this is the first edge fluctuation result away from the tangency points for the domain-wall six-vertex model when we are not in the free fermion case.

Refined Littlewood identity for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $F_λ$ are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials and can be viewed as partition functions in $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models. We obtain a refined Littlewood identity expressing a weighted sum of $F_λ$'s over all partitions $λ$ with even multiplicities as a certain Pfaffian. This Pfaffian can be derived as a partition function of the six vertex model in a triangle with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof is based on the Yang-Baxter equation.

Equivalences of LLT polynomials via lattice paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
The LLT polynomials $\mathcal{L}_{\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ} (X;t)$ are a family of symmetric polynomials indexed by a tuple of (possibly skew-)partitions $\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ= (β^{(1)}/γ^{(1)},\ldots,β^{(k)}/γ^{(k)})$. It has recently been shown that these polynomials can be seen as the partition function of a certain vertex model whose boundary conditions are determined by $\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ$. In this paper we describe an algorithm which gives a bijection between the configurations of the vertex model with boundary condition $\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ = (β^{(1)}/γ^{(1)},β^{(2)}/γ^{(2)})$ and those with boundary condition $(\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ)_{swap} = (β^{(2)}/γ^{(2)},β^{(1)}/γ^{(1)})$. We prove a sufficient condition for when this bijection is weight-preserving up to an overall factor of $t$, which in turn implies that the corresponding LLT polynomials are equal up to the same overall factor. Using these techniques, we are also able to systematically determine linear relations within families of LLT polynomials.

A Combinatorial Description of Certain Polynomials Related to the XYZ Spin Chain. II. The Polynomials $p_n$
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 036, 20 pages • View Publication • BIB
By specializing the parameters in the partition function of the 8VSOS model with domain wall boundary conditions and diagonal reflecting end, we find connections between the three-color model and certain polynomials $p_n(z)$, which are conjectured to be equal to certain polynomials of Bazhanov and Mangazeev, appearing in the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian of the supersymmetric XYZ spin chain. This article is a continuation of a previous paper where we investigated the related polynomials $q_n(z)$, also conjectured to be equal to polynomials of Bazhanov and Mangazeev, appearing in the eigenvectors of the supersymmetric XYZ spin chain.

Twenty Vertex model and domino tilings of the Aztec triangle
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the number of configurations of the 20 Vertex model on certain domains with domain wall type boundary conditions is equal to the number of domino tilings of Aztec-like triangles, proving a conjecture from [P. Di Francesco and E. Guitter, Twenty-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundaries and Domino Tilings, Elec. Jour. of Combinatorics 27 (2020), no. 2, P2.13]. The result is based on the integrability of the 20 Vertex model and uses a connection to the U-turn boundary 6 Vertex model to re-express the number of 20 Vertex configurations as a simple determinant, which is then related to a Lindström-Gessel-Viennot determinant for the domino tiling problem. The common number of configurations is conjectured to be $2^{n(n-1)/2}\prod_{j=0}^{n-1}\frac{(4j+2)!}{(n+2j+1)!}=1, 4, 60, 3328, 678912...$ The enumeration result is extended to include refinements of both numbers.

Kasteleyn theorem, geometric signatures and KP-II divisors on planar bipartite networks in the disk
Published • View Publication • BIB
Maximal minors of Kasteleyn sign matrices on planar bipartite graphs in the disk count dimer configurations with prescribed boundary conditions, and the weighted version of such matrices provides a natural parametrization of the totally non--negative part of real Grassmannians (see Refs. [54,43,44,58,7]). In this paper we provide a geometric interpretation of such variant of Kasteleyn theorem: a signature is Kasteleyn if and only if it is geometric in the sense of Ref. [5]. We apply this geometric characterization to explicitly solve the associated system of relations and provide a new proof that the parametrization of positroid cells induced by Kasteleyn weighted matrices coincides with that of Postnikov boundary measurement map. Finally we use Kasteleyn system of relations to associate algebraic geometric data to KP multi-soliton solutions. Indeed the KP wave function solves such system of relations at the nodes of the spectral curve if the dual graph of the latter represents the soliton data. Therefore the construction of the divisor is automatically invariant, and finally it coincides with that in Refs. [4,6] for the present class of graphs.

Bounded affine permutations II. Avoidance of decreasing patterns
Published in Ann. Comb. 25 (2021), 1007-1048, https://rdcu.be/czXKF • View Publication • BIB
We continue our study of a new boundedness condition for affine permutations, motivated by the fruitful concept of periodic boundary conditions in statistical physics. We focus on bounded affine permutations of size $N$ that avoid the monotone decreasing pattern of fixed size $m$. We prove that the number of such permutations is asymptotically equal to $(m-1)^{2N} N^{(m-2)/2}$ times an explicit constant as $N\to\infty$. For instance, the number of bounded affine permutations of size $N$ that avoid $321$ is asymptotically equal to $4^N (N/4π)^{1/2}$. We also prove a permuton-like result for the scaling limit of random permutations from this class, showing that the plot of a typical bounded affine permutation avoiding $m\cdots1$ looks like $m-1$ random lines of slope $1$ whose $y$ intercepts sum to $0$.

Refined Cauchy identity for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter equation. We rewrite our Izergin-Korepin type determinant in a different form which includes one of the sets of variables in a completely symmetric way. This determinantal identity might be of independent interest, and also allows to directly link the spin Hall-Littlewood rational functions with (the Hall-Littlewood particular case of) the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. In a different direction, a Schur expansion of our Izergin-Korepin type determinant yields a deformation of Schur symmetric polynomials. In the spin-$\frac12$ specialization, our refined Cauchy identity leads to a summation identity for eigenfunctions of the ASEP (Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), a celebrated stochastic interacting particle system in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. This produces explicit integral formulas for certain multitime probabilities in ASEP.
