A Noncommutative Chromatic Symmetric Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley associated with a graph G a symmetric function X_G which reduces to G's chromatic polynomial under a certain specialization of variables. He then proved various theorems generalizing results about the chromatic polynomial, as well as new ones that cannot be interpreted at that level. Unfortunately, X_G does not satisfy a Deletion-Contraction Law which makes it difficult to apply induction. We introduce a symmetric function in noncommuting variables which does have such a law and specializes to X_G when the variables are allowed to commute. This permits us to further generalize some of Stanley's theorems and prove them in a uniform and straightforward manner. Furthermore, we make some progress on the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

Sinks in Acyclic Orientations of Graphs
Published in J. Combin. Theory (B) 80 (2000) 130-146 • View PublicationBIB
Greene and Zaslavsky proved that the number of acyclic orientations of a graph with a unique sink is, up to sign, the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial. We give three new proofs of this result using pure induction, noncommutative symmetric functions, and an algorithmic bijection.

Bounds on the Complex Zeros of (Di)Chromatic Polynomials and Potts-Model Partition Functions
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 10 (2001) 41-77 • View PublicationBIB
I show that there exist universal constants $C(r) < \infty$ such that, for all loopless graphs $G$ of maximum degree $\le r$, the zeros (real or complex) of the chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$ lie in the disc $|q| < C(r)$. Furthermore, $C(r) \le 7.963906... r$. This result is a corollary of a more general result on the zeros of the Potts-model partition function $Z_G(q, {v_e})$ in the complex antiferromagnetic regime $|1 + v_e| \le 1$. The proof is based on a transformation of the Whitney-Tutte-Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation of $Z_G(q, {v_e})$ to a polymer gas, followed by verification of the Dobrushin-Kotecký-Preiss condition for nonvanishing of a polymer-model partition function. I also show that, for all loopless graphs $G$ of second-largest degree $\le r$, the zeros of $P_G(q)$ lie in the disc $|q| < C(r) + 1$. Along the way, I give a simple proof of a generalized (multivariate) Brown-Colbourn conjecture on the zeros of the reliability polynomial for the special case of series-parallel graphs.

Ground State Entropy of the Potts Antiferromagnet on Cyclic Strip Graphs
Published in J. Phys. A (Lett.) 32, L195 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and the (exponent of the) ground-state entropy $S_0$ for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on families of cyclic and twisted cyclic (Möbius) strip graphs composed of $p$-sided polygons. Our results suggest a general rule concerning the maximal region in the complex $q$ plane to which one can analytically continue from the physical interval where $S_0 > 0$. The chromatic zeros and their accumulation set ${\cal B}$ exhibit the rather unusual property of including support for $Re(q) < 0$ and provide further evidence for a relevant conjecture.

Chromatic Polynomials for Families of Strip Graphs and their Asymptotic Limits
Published in Physica A 252, 505 (1998) • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the chromatic polynomials $P((G_s)_m,q)$ and, from these, the asymptotic limiting functions $W(\{G_s\},q)=\lim_{n \to \infty}P(G_s,q)^{1/n}$ for families of $n$-vertex graphs $(G_s)_m$ comprised of $m$ repeated subgraphs $H$ adjoined to an initial graph $I$. These calculations of $W(\{G_s\},q)$ for infinitely long strips of varying widths yield important insights into properties of $W(Λ,q)$ for two-dimensional lattices $Λ$. In turn, these results connect with statistical mechanics, since $W(Λ,q)$ is the ground state degeneracy of the $q$-state Potts model on the lattice $Λ$. For our calculations, we develop and use a generating function method, which enables us to determine both the chromatic polynomials of finite strip graphs and the resultant $W(\{G_s\},q)$ function in the limit $n \to \infty$. From this, we obtain the exact continuous locus of points ${\cal B}$ where $W(\{G_s\},q)$ is nonanalytic in the complex $q$ plane. This locus is shown to consist of arcs which do not separate the $q$ plane into disconnected regions. Zeros of chromatic polynomials are computed for finite strips and compared with the exact locus of singularities ${\cal B}$. We find that as the width of the infinitely long strips is increased, the arcs comprising ${\cal B}$ elongate and move toward each other, which enables one to understand the origin of closed regions that result for the (infinite) 2D lattice.

Descents, quasi-symmetric functions, and the chromatic symmetric function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of Chung and Graham's ``G-descent expansion'' of the classical chromatic polynomial, as well as a special case of the quasi-symmetric function expansion of the path-cycle symmetric function Xi_D. Both proofs rely on Stanley's quasi-symmetric function expansion of the chromatic symmetric function X_G. We also show that Stanley's expansion suggests that a Robinson-Schensted algorithm for (3+1)-free posets---something that has been sought for unsuccessfully for some time---ought to ``respect descents'' in a certain precise sense.

A note on a combinatorial interpretation of the e-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function
Stanley has studied a symmetric function generalization X_G of the chromatic polynomial of a graph G. The innocent-looking Stanley-Stembridge Poset Chain Conjecture states that the expansion of X_G in terms of elementary symmetric functions has nonnegative coefficients if G is a clawfree incomparability graph. Here we give a combinatorial interpretation of these coefficients by combining Gasharov's work on the conjecture with Egecioglu and Remmel's combinatorial interpretation of the inverse Kostka matrix. This gives a new proof of a partial nonnegativity result of Stanley. As an interesting byproduct we derive a previously unnoticed result relating acyclic orientations to P-tableaux.
