The Bernstein homomorphism via Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile universality
If H is a commutative connected graded Hopf algebra over a commutative ring k, then a certain canonical k-algebra homomorphism H -> H (x) QSym is defined, where QSym denotes the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions over k. This homomorphism generalizes the "internal comultiplication" on QSym, and extends what Hazewinkel (in Section 18.24 of his "Witt vectors") calls the Bernstein homomorphism.
We construct this homomorphism with the help of the universal property of QSym as a combinatorial Hopf algebra (a well-known result by Aguiar, Bergeron and Sottile) and extension of scalars (the commutativity of H allows us to consider, for example, H (x) QSym as an H-Hopf algebra, and this change of viewpoint significantly extends the reach of the universal property).
A graph which recognizes idempotents of a commutative ring
In this paper we introduce and study a graph on the set of ideals of a commutative ring $R$. The vertices of this graph are non-trivial ideals of $R$ and two distinct ideals $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only $IJ=I\cap J$. We obtain some properties of this graph and study its relation to the structure of $R$.

The Davenport constant is one measure for how "large" a finite abelian group is. In particular, the Davenport constant of an abelian group is the smallest $k$ such that any sequence of length $k$ is reducible. This definition extends naturally to commutative semigroups, and has been studied in certain finite commutative rings. In this paper, we give an exact formula for the Davenport constant of a general commutative ring in terms of its unit group.
Properties of the Dot Product Graph of a Commutative Ring
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $n\geq1$ be an integer. Let $R^{n}=R\times\cdots\times R~(n~times)$. The \textit{total dot product} graph, denoted by $TD(R,n)$ is a simple graph with elements of $R^{n}-\{(0,0,\ldots,0)\}$ as vertices, and two distinct vertices $\mathbf{x}$ and $\mathbf{y}$ are adjacent if and only if $\mathbf{x} \cdot \mathbf{y}=0\in R$, where $\mathbf{x} \cdot \mathbf{y}$ denotes the dot product of $\mathbf{x}$ and $\mathbf{y}$. In this paper, we find the structure of $TD(R\times S,n)$ with respect to the structure of $TD(R,n)$ and $TD(S,n)$. In addition, we find the degree of vertices of this graph. We determine when it is regular. Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field. It is shown that if $TD(\mathbb{F},n)\simeq TD(R,m)$, then $n=m$ and $R\simeq\mathbb{F}$. A number of results concerning the domination number are also presented. Furthermore, we give some results on the clique and the independence number of $TD(R,n)$. It is shown that the ring $R$ is finite if and only if its independence number is finite. Finally, we classify all planar graphs within this class.

We prove the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations for a commutative ring associated to an arbitrary matroid M. We use the Hodge-Riemann relations to resolve a conjecture of Heron, Rota, and Welsh that postulates the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of M. We furthermore conclude that the f-vector of the independence complex of a matroid forms a log-concave sequence, proving a conjecture of Mason and Welsh for general matroids.
The representation theory of finite sets and correspondences
We investigate correspondence functors, namely the functors from the category of finite sets and correspondences to the category of $k$-modules, where $k$ is a commutative ring. They have various specific properties which do not hold for other types of functors. In particular, if $k$ is a field and if $F$ is a correspondence functor, then $F$ is finitely generated if and only if the dimension of $F(X)$ grows exponentially in terms of the cardinality of the finite set $X$. In such a case, $F$ has finite length. Also, if $k$ is noetherian, then any subfunctor of a finitely generated functor is finitely generated. When $k$ is a field, we give a description of all the simple functors and we determine the dimension of their evaluations at any finite set.A main tool is the construction of a functor associated to any finite lattice $T$. We prove for instance that this functor is projective if and only if the lattice $T$ is distributive. Moreover, it has quotients which play a crucial role in the analysis of simple functors. The special case of total orders yields some more specific results. Several other properties are also discussed, such as projectivity, duality, and symmetry. In an appendix, all the lattices associated to a given poset are described.

A classic result of Delsarte connects the strength (as orthogonal array) of a linear code with the minimum weight of its dual: the former is one less than the latter. We show that Delsarte's observation extends to codes over arbitrary finite rings.
Since the paper of Hammons \emph{et al.}, there is a lot of interest in codes over rings, especially in codes over $Z_4$ and their (usually non-linear) binary Gray map images.
We show that Delsarte's observation extends to codes over arbitrary finite commutative rings with identity. Also, we show that the strength of the Gray map image of a $Z_4$ code is one less than the minimum Lee weight of its Gray map image.

A 1993 result of Alon and Füredi gives a sharp upper bound on the number of zeros of a multivariate polynomial over an integral domain in a finite grid, in terms of the degree of the polynomial. This result was recently generalized to polynomials over an arbitrary commutative ring, assuming a certain "Condition (D)" on the grid which holds vacuously when the ring is a domain. In the first half of this paper we give a further Generalized Alon-Füredi Theorem which provides a sharp upper bound when the degrees of the polynomial in each variable are also taken into account. This yields in particular a new proof of Alon-Füredi. We then discuss the relationship between Alon-Füredi and results of DeMillo-Lipton, Schwartz and Zippel. A direct coding theoretic interpretation of Alon-Füredi Theorem and its generalization in terms of Reed--Muller type affine variety codes is shown which gives us the minimum Hamming distance of these codes. Then we apply the Alon-Füredi Theorem to quickly recover (and sometimes strengthen) old and new results in finite geometry, including the Jamison/Brouwer-Schrijver bound on affine blocking sets. We end with a discussion of multiplicity enhancements.

Let $D$ be a subset of a finite commutative ring $R$ with identity. Let $f(x)\in R[x]$ be a polynomial of positive degree $d$. For integer $0\leq k \leq |D|$, we study the number $N_f(D,k,b)$ of $k$-subsets $S\subseteq D$ such that
\begin{align*}
\sum_{x\in S} f(x)=b.
\end{align*} In this paper, we establish several asymptotic formulas for $N_f(D,k, b)$, depending on the nature of the ring $R$ and $f$.
For $R=\mathbb{Z}_n$, let $p=p(n)$ be the smallest prime divisor of $n$, $|D|=n-c \geq C_dn p^{-\frac 1d }+c$ and $f(x)=a_dx^d +\cdots +a_0\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ with $(a_d, \dots, a_1, n)=1$. Then
$$\left| N_f(D, k, b)-\frac{1}{n}{n-c \choose k}\right|\leq
{δ(n)(n-c)+(1-δ(n))(C_dnp^{-\frac 1d}+c)+k-1\choose k},$$ partially answering an open question raised by Stanley \cite{St}, where $δ(n)=\sum_{i\mid n, μ(i)=-1}\frac 1 i$ and $C_d=e^{1.85d}$. Furthermore, if $n$ is a prime power, then $δ(n) =1/p$ and one can take $C_d=4.41$.
For $R=\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$, let $f(x)\in \mathbb{F}_q[x]$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ not divisible by $p$ and
$D\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$ with $|D|=q-c\geq (d-1)\sqrt{q}+c$. Then $$\left| N_f(D, k, b)-\frac{1}{q}{q-c \choose k}\right|\leq {\frac{q-c}{p}+\frac {p-1}{p}((d-1)q^{\frac 12}+c)+k-1 \choose k}.$$
If $f(x)=ax+b$, then this problem is precisely the well-known subset sum problem over a finite abelian group. Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and let $D\subseteq G$ with $|D|=|G|-c\geq c$. Then $$\left| N_x(D, k, b)-\frac{1}{|G|}{|G|-c \choose k}\right|\leq {c + (|G|-2c)δ(e(G))+k-1 \choose k},$$ where $e(G)$ is the exponent of $G$ and $δ(n)=\sum_{i\mid n, μ(i)=-1}\frac 1 i$. In particular, we give a new short proof for the explicit counting formula for the case $D=G$.
The Center and Radius of the Regular Graph of Ideals
The regular graph of ideals of the commutative ring $R$, denoted by ${Γ_{reg}}(R)$, is a graph whose vertex set is the set of all non-trivial ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if either $I$ contains a $J$-regular element or $J$ contains an $I$-regular element. In this paper, it is proved that the radius of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ equals $3$. The central vertices of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ are determined, too.
Snake graph calculus and cluster algebras from surfaces III: Band graphs and snake rings
We introduce several commutative rings, the snake rings, that have strong connections to cluster algebras. The elements of these rings are residue classes of unions of certain labeled graphs that were used to construct canonical bases in the theory of cluster algebras. We obtain several rings by varying the conditions on the structure as well as the labelling of the graphs. The most restrictive form of this ring is isomorphic to the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ of polynomials in two variables over the integers. A more general form contains all cluster algebras of unpunctured surface type.
The definition of the rings requires the snake graph calculus which is completed in this paper building on two earlier articles on the subject. Identities in the snake ring correspond to bijections between the posets of perfect matchings of the graphs. One of the main results of the current paper is the completion of the explicit construction of these bijections.
The signed random-to-top operator on tensor space (draft)
Given a free module L over a commutative ring k, we study two k-linear operators on the tensor algebra of T(L): One of them sends a pure tensor u_1 (X) u_2 (X) ... (X) u_k to the sum of all tensors u_i (X) u_1 (X) u_2 (X) ... (X) (skip u_i) (X) ... (X) u_k. The other is similar, but the sum is replaced by an alternating sum. These operators can be regarded as algebraic analogues of the "random-to-top shuffle" from combinatorics. We describe the kernel of the second operator (which we call boldface-t); it is a certain easily described Lie subsuperalgebra of T(L). We also describe the kernel of the first operator (which is denoted boldface-t') when the additive group k is torsionfree (the description is analogous to that of the kernel of t) and also when k is an algebra over a finite field (in this case, the description is slightly complicated by the presence of p-th powers).

The purpose of this paper is to study spectral properties of a family of Cayley graphs on finite commutative rings. Let $R$ be such a ring and $R^\times$ its set of units. Let $Q_R=\{u^2: u\in R^\times\}$ and $T_R=Q_R\cup(-Q_R)$. We define the quadratic unitary Cayley graph of $R$, denoted by $\mathcal{G}_R$, to be the Cayley graph on the additive group of $R$ with respect to $T_R$; that is, $\mathcal{G}_R$ has vertex set $R$ such that $x, y \in R$ are adjacent if and only if $x-y\in T_R$. It is well known that any finite commutative ring $R$ can be decomposed as $R=R_1\times R_2\times\cdots\times R_s$, where each $R_i$ is a local ring with maximal ideal $M_i$. Let $R_0$ be a local ring with maximal ideal $M_0$ such that $|R_0|/|M_0| \equiv 3\,(\mod\,4)$. We determine the spectra of $\mathcal{G}_R$ and $\mathcal{G}_{R_0\times R}$ under the condition that $|R_i|/|M_i|\equiv 1\,(\mod\,4)$ for $1 \le i \le s$. We compute the energies and spectral moments of such quadratic unitary Cayley graphs, and determine when such a graph is hyperenergetic or Ramanujan.

In this paper we investigate codes over finite commutative rings R, whose generator matrices are built from \$α\$-circulant matrices. For a non-trivial ideal I<R we give a method to lift such codes over R/I to codes over R, such that some isomorphic copies are avoided.
For the case where I is the minimal ideal of a finite chain ring we refine this lifting method: We impose the additional restriction that lifting preserves self-duality. It will be shown that this can be achieved by solving a linear system of equations over a finite field.
Finally we apply this technique to Z_4-linear double nega-circulant and bordered circulant self-dual codes. We determine the best minimum Lee distance of these codes up to length 64.
The coloring of the regular graph of ideals
The regular graph of ideals of the commutative ring $R$, denoted by $Γ_{reg}(R)$, is a graph whose vertex set is the set of all non-trivial ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if either $I$ contains a $J$-regular element or $J$ contains an $I$-regular element. In this paper, it is shown that for every Artinian ring $R$, the edge chromatic number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ equals its maximum degree. Then a formula for the clique number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ is given. Also, it is proved that for every reduced ring $R$ with $n(\geq3)$ minimal prime ideals, the edge chromatic number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ is $2^{n-1}-2$. Moreover, we show that both of the clique number and vertex chromatic number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ are $n-1$, for every reduced ring $R$ with $n$ minimal prime ideals.

If $X$ is a commutative ring with unity, then the unitary Cayley graph of $X$, denoted $G_X$, is defined to be the graph whose vertex set is $X$ and whose edge set is $\{\{a,b\}\colon a-b\in X^\times\}$. When $R$ is a Dedekind domain and $I$ is an ideal of $R$ such that $R/I$ is finite and nontrivial, we refer to $G_{R/I}$ as a \emph{generalized totient graph}. We study generalized totient graphs as generalizations of the graphs $G_{\mathbb{Z}/(n)}$, which have appeared recently in the literature, sometimes under the name \emph{Euler totient Cayley graphs}. We begin by generalizing to Dedekind domains the arithmetic functions known as Schemmel totient functions, and we use one of these generalizations to provide a simple formula, for any positive integer $m$, for the number of cliques of order $m$ in a generalized totient graph. In particular, we prove that the number of cliques of order $m$ in $G_{\mathbb Z/(n)}$ is \[\prod_{k=1}^m\frac{S_{k-1}(n)}{k},\] where $S_r$ is the $r^{\text{th}}$ Schemmel totient function.
We then proceed to determine many properties of generalized totient graphs such as their clique numbers, chromatic numbers, chromatic indices, clique domination numbers, and (in many, but not all cases) girths. We also determine the diameter of each component of a generalized totient graph. We correct one erroneous claim about the clique domination numbers of Euler totient Cayley graphs that has appeared in the literature and provide a counterexample to a second claim about the strong domination numbers of these graphs.
On Irreducible Divisor Graphs in Commutative Rings with Zero-Divisors

In this paper, we continue the program initiated by I. Beck's now classical paper concerning zero-divisor graphs of commutative rings. After the success of much research regarding zero-divisor graphs, many authors have turned their attention to studying divisor graphs of non-zero elements in the ring, the so called irreducible divisor graph. In this paper, we construct several different associated irreducible divisor graphs of a commutative ring with unity using various choices for the definition of irreducible and atomic in the literature. We continue pursuing the program of exploiting the interaction between algebraic structures and associated graphs to further our understanding of both objects. Factorization in rings with zero-divisors is considerably more complicated than integral domains; however, we find that many of the same techniques can be extended to rings with zero-divisors. This allows us to not only find graph theoretic characterizations of many of the finite factorization properties that commutative rings may possess, but also understand graph theoretic properties of graphs associated with certain commutative rings satisfying nice factorization properties.

In 1988, I. Beck introduced the notion of a zero-divisor graph of a commutative rings with $1$. There have been several generalizations in recent years. In particular, in 2007 J. Coykendall and J. Maney developed the irreducible divisor graph. Much work has been done on generalized factorization, especially $τ$-factorization. The goal of this paper is to synthesize the notions of $τ$-factorization and irreducible divisor graphs in domains. We will define a $τ$-irreducible divisor graph for non-zero non-unit elements of a domain. We show that by studying $τ$-irreducible divisor graphs, we find equivalent characterizations of several finite $τ$-factorization properties.

We extend the big and $p$-typical Witt vector functors from commutative rings to commutative semirings. In the case of the big Witt vectors, this is a repackaging of some standard facts about monomial and Schur positivity in the combinatorics of symmetric functions. In the $p$-typical case, it uses positivity with respect to an apparently new basis of the $p$-typical symmetric functions. We also give explicit descriptions of the big Witt vectors of the natural numbers and of the nonnegative reals, the second of which is a restatement of Edrei's theorem on totally positive power series. Finally we give some negative results on the relationship between truncated Witt vectors and $k$-Schur positivity, and we give ten open questions.
A Note on Co-Maximal Ideal Graph of Commutative Rings
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity. The co-maximal ideal graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is a graph whose vertices are the proper ideals of $R$ which are not contained in the Jacobson radical of $R$, and two vertices $I_1$ and $I_2$ are adjacent if and only if $I_1 + I_2 = R$. We classify all commutative rings whose co-maximal ideal graphs are planar. In 2012 the following question was posed: If $Γ(R)$ is an infinite star graph, can $R$ be isomorphic to the direct product of a field and a local ring? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this question.
