Let G be a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals of a commutative ring. We introduce a generalized spline, which is a vertex-labeling of G by elements of the ring so that the difference between the labels of any two adjacent vertices lies in the corresponding edge ideal. Generalized splines arise naturally in combinatorics (em algebraic splines of Billera and others) and in algebraic topology (certain equivariant cohomology rings, described by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and others). The central question of this manuscript asks when an arbitrary edge-labeled graph has nontrivial generalized splines. The answer is `always', and we prove the stronger result that generalized splines contain a free submodule whose rank is the number of vertices in G. We describe all generalized splines when G is a tree, and give several ways to describe the ring of generalized splines as an intersection of generalized splines for simpler subgraphs of G. We also present a new tool which we call the GKM matrix, an analogue of the incidence matrix of a graph, and end with open questions.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $M$ be an $R$-module, and let $Z(M)$ be the set of all zero-divisors on $M$. In 2008, D.F. Anderson and A. Badawi introduced the regular graph of $R$. In this paper, we generalize the regular graph of $R$ to the \textit{$M$-regular graph} of $R$, denoted by $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$. It is the undirected graph with all $M$-regular elements of $R$ as vertices, and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x+y\in Z(M)$. The basic properties and possible structures of the $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$ are studied. We determine the girth of the $M$-regular graph of $R$. Also, we provide some lower bounds for the independence number and the clique number of the $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$. Among other results, we prove that for every Noetherian ring $R$ and every finitely generated module $M$ over $R$, if $2\notin Z(M)$ and the independence number of the $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$ is finite, then $R$ is finite.

We develop a new technique for studying monomial ideals in the standard polynomial rings $A[X_1,\ldots,X_d]$ where $A$ is a commutative ring with identity. The main idea is to consider induced ideals in the semigroup ring $R=A[\mathbb{M}^1_{\geq 0}\times\cdots\times\mathbb{M}^d_{\geq 0}]$ where $\mathbb{M}^1,\ldots,\mathbb{M}^d$ are non-zero additive subgroups of $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that the set of non-zero finitely generated monomial ideals in $R$ has the structure of a metric space, and we prove that a version of Krull dimension for this setting is lower semicontinuous with respect to this metric space structure. We also show how to use discrete techniques to study certain monomial ideals in this context.
Application of some combinatorial arrays in coloring of total graph of a commutative ring
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity and $Z(R)$ and ${\rm Reg}(R)$ be the set of zero-divisors and non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, respectively. We denote by $T(Γ(R))$, the total graph of $R$, a simple graph with the vertex set $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x+y\in Z(R)$. The induced subgraphs on $Z(R)$ and ${\rm Reg}(R)$ are denoted by $Z(Γ(R))$ and $Reg(Γ(R))$, respectively. These graphs were first introduced by D.F. Anderson and A. Badawi in 2008. In this paper, we prove the following result: let $R$ be a finite ring and one of the following conditions hold: (i) The residue field of $R$ of minimum size has even characteristic, (ii) Every residue field of $R$ has odd characteristic and $\frac{R}{J(R)}$ has no summand isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_3\times \mathbb{Z}_3$, then the chromatic number and clique number of $T(Γ(R))$ are equal to $\max\{|\mathfrak{m}|\,:\, \mathfrak{m}\in {\rm Max}(R)\}$. The same result holds for $Z(Γ(R))$. Moreover, if the residue field of $R$ of minimum size has even characteristic or every residue field of $R$ has odd characteristic, then we determine the chromatic number and clique number of $Reg(Γ(R))$ as well.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity and $R^{+}$ be $Z^*(R)$ be the additive group and the set of all non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, respectively. We denote by $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ the Cayley graph $Cay(R^+,Z^*(R))$. In this paper, we study $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$. Among other results, it is shown that for every zero-dimensional non-local ring $R$, $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ is a connected graph of diameter 2. Moreover, for a finite ring $R$, we obtain the vertex connectivity and the edge connectivity of $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$. We investigate rings $R$ with perfect $\mathbb{CAY}(R)$ as well. We also study $Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R))$ the induced subgraph on the regular elements of $R$. This graph gives a family of vertex transitive graphs. We show that if $R$ is a Noetherian ring and $Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R))$ has no infinite clique, then $R$ is finite. Furthermore, for every finite ring $R$, the clique number and the chromatic number of $Reg(\mathbb{CAY}(R))$ are determined.

We say that the sequence $g_n$, $n\ge 3$, $n \rightarrow \infty$ of polynomial transformation bijective maps of free module $K^n$ over commutative ring $K$ is a sequence of stable degree if the order of $g_n$ is growing with $n$ and the degree of each nonidentical polynomial map of kind ${g_n}^k$ is an independent constant $c$. A transformation $b=τ
{g_n}^k τ^{-1}$, where $τ$ is affine bijection, $n$ is large and $k$ is relatively small, can be used as a base of group theoretical Diffie-Hellman key exchange algorithm for the Cremona group $C(K^n)$ of all regular automorphisms of $K^n$. The specific feature of this method is that the order of the base may be unknown for the adversary because of the complexity of its computation. The exchange can be implemented by tools of Computer Algebra (symbolic computations). The adversary can not use the degree of righthandside in $b^x=d$ to evaluate unknown $x$ in this form for the discrete logarithm problem.
In the paper we introduce the explicit constructions of sequences of elements of stable degree for cases $c=3$ for each commutative ring $K$ containing at least 3 regular elements and discuss the implementation of related key exchange and public key algorithms.
Independent sets of some graphs associated to commutative rings
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A set $S\subseteq V$ is independent set of $G$, if no two vertices of $S$ are adjacent. The independence number $α(G)$ is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph. %An independent set with cardinality Let $R$ be a commutative ring with nonzero identity and $I$ an ideal of $R$. The zero-divisor graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is an undirected graph whose vertices are the nonzero zero-divisors of $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $xy = 0$. Also the ideal-based zero-divisor graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ_I(R)$, is the graph which vertices are the set ${x\in R\backslash I | xy\in I \quad for some \quad y\in R\backslash I\}$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $xy \in I$. In this paper we study the independent sets and the independence number of $Γ(R)$ and $Γ_I(R)$.
Cluster algebras: an introduction

Cluster algebras are commutative rings with a set of distinguished generators having a remarkable combinatorial structure. They were introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky in 2000 in the context of Lie theory, but have since appeared in many other contexts, from Poisson geometry to triangulations of surfaces and Teichmüller theory. In this expository paper we give an introduction to cluster algebras, and illustrate how this framework naturally arises in Teichmüller theory. We then sketch how the theory of cluster algebras led to a proof of the Zamolodchikov periodicity conjecture in mathematical physics.

We introduce the notion of a matroid M over a commutative ring R, assigning to every subset of the ground set an R-module according to some axioms. When R is a field, we recover matroids. When R=$\mathbb{Z}$, and when R is a DVR, we get (structures which contain all the data of) quasi-arithmetic matroids, and valuated matroids i.e. tropical linear spaces, respectively. More generally, whenever R is a Dedekind domain, we extend all the usual properties and operations holding for matroids (e.g., duality), and we explicitly describe the structure of the matroids over R. Furthermore, we compute the Tutte-Grothendieck ring of matroids over R. We also show that the Tutte quasi-polynomial of a matroid over $\mathbb{Z}$ can be obtained as an evaluation of the class of the matroid in the Tutte-Grothendieck ring.

Let $V$ be a left $R$-module where $R$ is a (not necessarily commutative) ring with unit. The intersection graph $\cG(V)$ of proper $R$-submodules of $V$ is an undirected graph without loops and multiple edges defined as follows: the vertex set is the set of all proper $R$-submodules of $V,$ and there is an edge between two distinct vertices $U$ and $W$ if and only if $U\cap W\neq 0.$ We study these graphs to relate the combinatorial properties of $\cG(V)$ to the algebraic properties of the $R$-module $V.$ We study connectedness, domination, finiteness, coloring, and planarity for $\cG (V).$ For instance, we find the domination number of $\cG (V).$ We also find the chromatic number of $\cG(V)$ in some cases. Furthermore, we study cycles in $\cG(V),$ and complete subgraphs in $\cG (V)$ determining the structure of $V$ for which $\cG(V)$ is planar.

Let $R$ be a finite commutative ring. The unitary Cayley graph of $R$, denoted $G_R$, is the graph with vertex set $R$ and edge set ${{a,b}:a,b\in R, a-b\in R^\times}$, where $R^\times$ is the set of units of $R$. An $r$-regular graph is Ramanujan if the absolute value of every eigenvalue of it other than $\pm r$ is at most $2\sqrt{r-1}$. In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $G_R$ to be Ramanujan, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the complement of $G_R$ to be Ramanujan. We also determine the energy of the line graph of $G_R$, and compute the spectral moments of $G_R$ and its line graph.

Two players alternate moves in the following impartial combinatorial game: Given a finitely generated abelian group $A$, a move consists of picking some nonzero element $a \in A$. The game then continues with the quotient group $A/ \langle a \rangle$. We prove that under the normal play rule, the second player has a winning strategy if and only if $A$ is a square, i.e. $A$ is isomorphic to $B \times B$ for some abelian group $B$. Under the misère play rule, only minor modifications concerning elementary abelian groups are necessary to describe the winning situations. We also compute the nimbers, i.e. Sprague-Grundy values, of $2$-generated abelian groups. An analogous game can be played with arbitrary algebraic structures. We study some examples of non-abelian groups and commutative rings such as $R[X]$, where $R$ is a principal ideal domain.

A deformation of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid M is defined as a quotient of the free associative algebra over a commutative ring R with 1. It is shown that the given generators form a Groebner basis and that after suitable homogenization the deformation and the Orlik-Solomon have the same Hilbert series as R-algebras. For supersolvable matroids, equivalently fiber type arrangements, there is a quadratic Groebner basis and hence the algebra is Koszul

Let $R$ be a ring (not necessary commutative) with non-zero identity. The unit graph of $R$, denoted by $G(R)$, is a graph with elements of $R$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $a+b$ is a unit element of $R$. It was proved that if $R$ is a commutative ring and $\fm$ is a maximal ideal of $R$ such that $|R/\fm|=2$, then $G(R)$ is a complete bipartite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring. In this paper we generalize this result by showing that if $R$ is a ring (not necessary commutative), then $G(R)$ is a complete $r$-partite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring and $r=|R/m|=2^n$, for some $n \in \N$ or $R$ is a finite field. Among other results we show that if $R$ is a left Artinian ring, $2 \in U(R)$ and the clique number of $G(R)$ is finite, then $R$ is a finite ring.

We consider a q-analogue of the standard bilinear form on the commutative ring of symmetric functions. The q=-1 case leads to a Z-graded Hopf superalgebra which we call the algebra of odd symmetric functions. In the odd setting we describe counterparts of the elementary and complete symmetric functions, power sums, Schur functions, and combinatorial interpretations of associated change of basis relations.

Primary decomposition of commutative monoid congruences is insensitive to certain features of primary decomposition in commutative rings. These features are captured by the more refined theory of mesoprimary decomposition of congruences, introduced here complete with witnesses and associated prime objects. The combinatorial theory of mesoprimary decomposition lifts to arbitrary binomial ideals in monoid algebras. The resulting binomial mesoprimary decomposition is a new type of intersection decomposition for binomial ideals that enjoys computational efficiency and independence from ground field hypotheses. Binomial primary decompositions are easily recovered from mesoprimary decomposition.
On realizing zero-divisor graphs of po-semirings
In this paper, we determine bipartite graphs and complete graphs with horns, which are realizable as zero-divisor graphs of po-semirings. As applications, we classify commutative rings $R$ whose annihilating-ideal graph $\mathbb {AG}(R)$ are either bipartite graphs or complete graphs with horns.

This paper studies the co-maximal graph $\Om(R)$, the induced subgraph $\G(R)$ of $\Om(R)$ whose vertex set is $R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))$ and a retract $\G_r(R)$ of $\G(R)$, where $R$ is a commutative ring. We show that the core of $\G(R)$ is a union of triangles and rectangles, while a vertex in $\G(R)$ is either an end vertex or a vertex in the core. For a non-local ring $R$, we prove that both the chromatic number and clique number of $\G(R)$ are identical with the number of maximal ideals of $R$. A graph $\G_r(R)$ is also introduced on the vertex set $\{Rx|\,x\in R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))\}$, and graph properties of $\G_r(R)$ are studied.
