We prove a general inclusion-exclusion relation for the extended chromatic symmetric function of a weighted graph, which specializes to (extended) $k$-deletion, and we give two methods to obtain numerous new bases from weighted graphs for the algebra of symmetric functions.
Moreover, we classify when two weighted paths have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions by proving this is equivalent to the classification of equal ribbon Schur functions. This latter classification is dependent on the operation composition of compositions, which we generalize to composition of graphs. We then apply our generalization to obtain infinitely many families of weighted graphs whose members have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions.
Riordan Groups in higher Dimensions
The classical Riordan groups associated to a given commutative ring are groups of infinite matrices (called Riordan arrays) associated to pairs of formal power series in one variable. The Fundamental Theorem of Riordan Arrays relates matrix multiplication to two group actions on such series, namely formal (convolution) multiplication and formal composition. We define the analogous Riordan groups involving formal power series in several variables, and establish the analogue of the Fundamental Theorem in that context. We discuss related groups of Laurent series and pose some questions.
Species-theoretic foundations of perturbative quantum field theory
We develop an algebraic formalism for perturbative quantum field theory (pQFT) which is based on Joyal's combinatorial species. We show that certain basic structures of pQFT are correctly viewed as algebraic structures internal to species, constructed with respect to the Cauchy monoidal product. Aspects of this formalism have appeared in the physics literature, particularly in the work of Bogoliubov-Shirkov, Steinmann, Ruelle, and Epstein-Glaser-Stora. In this paper, we give a fully explicit account in terms of modern theory developed by Aguiar-Mahajan. We describe the central construction of causal perturbation theory as a homomorphism from the Hopf monoid of set compositions, decorated with local observables, into the Wick algebra of microcausal polynomial observables. The operator-valued distributions called (generalized) time-ordered products and (generalized) retarded products are obtained as images of fundamental elements of this Hopf monoid under the curried homomorphism. The perturbative S-matrix scheme corresponds to the so-called universal series, and the property of causal factorization is naturally expressed in terms of the action of the Hopf monoid on itself by Hopf powers, called the Tits product. Given a system of fully renormalized time-ordered products, the perturbative construction of the corresponding interacting products is via an up biderivation of the Hopf monoid, which recovers Bogoliubov's formula.
Bounds on Sweep-Covers by Raney Numbers
In this work, we introduce a vertex separator in trees known as a sweep-cover that is defined by an ancestor-descendent relationship with all nodes in the tree. We prove the recurrence relation of sweep-covers with $n$ subcovers $P_{Δ, γ}(n)$ on a class of infinite $Δ$-ary trees with constant path lengths $γ$ between the $Δ$-star internal nodes. Then, we provide recurrence relations for Raney numbers over integer compositions and show that they provide a lower-bound for sweep-covers such that $P_{Δ, γ}(n) = Ω\left( \frac{\sqrt{2 π} n^{Δn + Δ+ \frac{3}{2}}}{e^n ((Δ-1)n+Δ+1)!(n+1)!} γ\right)$.

Schubert polynomials are refined by the key polynomials of Lascoux-Schützenberger, which in turn are refined by the fundamental slide polynomials of Assaf-Searles. In this paper we determine which fundamental slide polynomial refinements of key polynomials, indexed by strong compositions, are multiplicity free. We also give a recursive algorithm to determine all terms in the fundamental slide polynomial refinement of a key polynomial indexed by a strong composition. From here, we apply our results to begin to classify which fundamental slide polynomial refinements, indexed by weak compositions, are multiplicity free. We completely resolve the cases when the weak composition has at most two nonzero parts or the sum has at most two nonzero terms.

We introduce the hydra continued fractions, as a generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fractions, and give a combinatorial interpretation in terms of shift-plethystic trees. We then show it is possible to express them as a quotient of m-distinct partition generating functions, and in its dual form as a quotient of the generating functions of compositions with contiguous rises upper bounded by m-1. We obtain new generating functions for compositions according to their local minima, for partitions with a prescribed set of rises, and for compositions with prescribed sets of contiguous differences.

Let alpha = (a,b,...) be a composition. Consider the associated poset F(alpha), called a fence, whose covering relations are x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{a+1} > x_{a+2} > ... > x_{a+b+1} < x_{a+b+2} < ... . We study the associated distributive lattice L(alpha) consisting of all lower order ideals of F(alpha). These lattices are important in the theory of cluster algebras and their rank generating functions can be used to define q-analogues of rational numbers. In particular, we make progress on a recent conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that L(alpha) is rank unimodal. We show that if one of the parts of alpha is greater than the sum of the others, then the conjecture is true. We conjecture that L(alpha) enjoys the stronger properties of having a nested chain decomposition and having a rank sequence which is either top or bottom interlacing, the latter being a recently defined property of sequences. We verify that these properties hold for compositions with at most three parts and for what we call d-divided posets, generalizing work of Claussen and simplifying a construction of Gansner.

Let $α$ be a composition of $n$ and $σ$ a permutation in $\mathfrak{S}_{\ell(α)}$. This paper concerns the projective covers of $H_n(0)$-modules $\mathcal{V}_α$, $X_α$ and $\mathbf{S}^σ_α$, which categorify the dual immaculate quasisymmetric function, the extended Schur function, and the quasisymmetric Schur function when $σ$ is the identity, respectively. First, we show that the projective cover of $\mathcal{V}_α$ is the projective indecomposable module $\mathbf{P}_α$ due to Norton, and $X_α$ and the $φ$-twist of the canonical submodule $\mathbf{S}^σ_{β,C}$ of $\mathbf{S}^σ_β$ for $(β,σ)$'s satisfying suitable conditions appear as $H_n(0)$-homomorphic images of $\mathcal{V}_α$. Second, we introduce a combinatorial model for the $φ$-twist of $\mathbf{S}^σ_α$ and derive a series of surjections starting from $\mathbf{P}_α$ to the $φ$-twist of $\mathbf{S}^{\mathrm{id}}_{α,C}$. Finally, we construct the projective cover of every indecomposable direct summand $\mathbf{S}^σ_{α, E}$ of $\mathbf{S}^σ_α$. As a byproduct, we give a characterization of triples $(σ, α, E)$ such that the projective cover of $\mathbf{S}^σ_{α, E}$ is indecomposable.

Integer compositions with certain colored parts were introduced by Andrews in 2007 to address a number-theoretic problem. Integer compositions allowing zero as some parts were introduced by Ouvry and Polychronakos in 2019. We give a bijection between these two varieties of compositions and determine various combinatorial properties of these multicompositions. In particular, we determine the count of multicompositions by number of all parts, number of positive parts, and number of zeros. Then, working from three types of compositions with restricted parts that are counted by the Fibonacci sequence, we find the sequences counting multicompositions with analogous restrictions. With these tools, we give combinatorial proofs of summation formulas for generalizations of the Jacobsthal and Pell sequences.

Two distinct projections of finite rank $m$ are adjacent if their difference is an operator of rank two or, equivalently, the intersection of their images is $(m-1)$-dimensional. We extend this adjacency relation on other conjugacy classes of finite-rank self-adjoint operators which leads to a natural generalization of Grassmann graphs. Let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class formed by finite-rank self-adjoint operators with eigenspaces of dimension greater than $1$. Under the assumption that operators from ${\mathcal C}$ have at least three eigenvalues we prove that every automorphism of the corresponding generalized Grassmann graph is the composition of an automorphism induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator and the automorphism obtained from a permutation of eigenspaces with the same dimensions. The case when the operators from ${\mathcal C}$ have two eigenvalues only is covered by classical Chow's theorem which says that there are graph automorphisms induced by semilinear automorphisms not preserving orthogonality.

In this paper, we give a representation of the average of complete joint weight enumerators of two linear codes of length $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{k}$ in terms of the compositions of $n$ and their distributions in the codes. We also obtain a generalization of the representation for the average of $g$-fold complete joint weight enumerators of codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{k}$. Finally, the average of intersection numbers of a pair of Type III (resp. Type IV) codes, and its second moment are found.
Kings and Kernels in Semicomplete Compositions
Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 2$. A $k$-king in a digraph $D$ is a vertex which can reach every other vertex by a directed path of length at most $k$ and a non-king is a vertex which is not a 3-king. A subset $K$ is $k$-independent if for every pair of vertices $x,y \in K$, we have $d_D(x, y), d_D(y, x)\geq k$; it is $\ell$-absorbent if for every $x\in V(D)\setminus K$ there exists $y\in K$ such that $d_D(x, y)\leq \ell$. A $k$-kernel of $D$ is a $k$-independent and $(k-1)$-absorbent subset of $V(D)$. A kernel is a 2-kernel. A set $K\subseteq V(D)$ is a quasi-kernel of $D$ if it is independent, and for every vertex $x\in V(D)\setminus K$, there exists $y\in K$ such that $d_D(x, y)\leq 2$. The problem {\sc $k$-Kernel} is determining whether a given digraph has a $k$-kernel.
Let $Q=T[H_1, \dots, H_t]$ be the composition of $T$ and $H_i$ ($1\leq i\leq t, t\ge 2$), where $T$ is a digraph with $t$ vertices, and $H_1, \dots, H_t$ are pairwise disjoint digraphs. The composition $Q=T[H_1, \dots, H_t]$ is a semicomplete composition if $T$ is semicomplete. In this paper, we study kings and kernels in semicomplete compositions.
For the topic of kings, we characterize digraph compositions with a $k$-king and digraph compositions all of whose vertices are $k$-kings, respectively. We also discuss the existence of 3-kings, and study the minimum number of 4-kings in a strong semicomplete composition.
For the topic of kernels, we first study the existence of a pair of disjoint quasi-kernels in semicomplete compositions. We then deduce that the problem {\sc $k$-Kernel} restricted to strong semicomplete compositions is NP-complete when $k\in \{2,3\}$, and is polynomial-time solvable when $k\geq 4$. We also prove that when $k$ is divisible by 2 or 3, the problem {\sc $k$-Kernel} restricted to non-strong semicomplete compositions is NP-complete.
A geometric characterisation of subvarieties of the standard E_6-variety related to the ternions, degenerate split quaternions and sextonions over arbitrary fields
The main achievement of this paper is a geometric characterisation of certain subvarieties of the Cartan variety (the standard projective variety associated to the split exceptional group of Lie type E_6) over an arbitrary field K. The characterised varieties arise as Veronese representations of certain ring projective planes over quadratic subalgebras of the split octonions over K (among which the sextonions, a 6-dimensional non-associative algebra). We describe how these varieties are linked to the Freudenthal-Tits magic square, and discuss how they would even fit in, when also allowing the sextonions and other "degenerate composition algebras" as the algebras used to construct the square.

We generalize the asymptotic estimates by Bubboloni, Luca and Spiga (2012) on the number of $k$-compositions of $n$ satisfying some coprimality conditions. We substantially refine the error term concerning the number of $k$-compositions of $n$ with pairwise relatively prime summands. We use a different approach, based on properties of multiplicative arithmetic functions of $k$ variables and on an asymptotic formula for the restricted partition function.

Given a binary quasigroup $G$ of order $n$, a $d$-iterated quasigroup $G[d]$ is the $(d+1)$-ary quasigroup equal to the $d$-times composition of $G$ with itself. The Cayley table of every $d$-ary quasigroup is a $d$-dimensional latin hypercube. Transversals and diagonals in multiary quasigroups are defined so as to coincide with those in the corresponding latin hypercube.
We prove that if a group $G$ of order $n$ satisfies the Hall--Paige condition, then the number of transversals in $G[d]$ is equal to $ \frac{n!}{ |G'| n^{n-1}} \cdot n!^{d} (1 + o(1))$ for large $d$, where $G'$ is the commutator subgroup of $G$. For a general quasigroup $G$, we obtain similar estimations on the numbers of transversals and near transversals in $G[d]$ and develop a method for counting diagonals of other types in iterated quasigroups.
Generalisation of the Danilov-Karzanov-Koshevoy Construction for Peak-Pit Condorcet Domains
Danilov, Karzanov and Koshevoy (2012) geometrically introduced an interesting operation of composition on tiling Condorcet domains and using it they disproved a long-standing problem of Fishburn about the maximal size of connected Condorcet domains. We give an algebraic definition of this operation and investigate its properties. We give a precise formula for the cardinality of composition of two Condorcet domains and improve the Danilov, Karzanov and Koshevoy result showing that Fishburn's alternating scheme does not always define a largest peak-pit Condorcet domain.

Let $T$ be a digraph with vertices $u_1, \dots, u_t$ ($t\ge 2$) and let $H_1, \dots, H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1, \dots, H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\, 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\colon\, u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ The composition $Q=T[H_1, \dots, H_t]$ is a semicomplete composition if $T$ is semicomplete, i.e. there is at least one arc between every pair of vertices. Digraph compositions generalize some families of digraphs, including (extended) semicomplete digraphs, quasi-transitive digraphs and lexicographic product digraphs. In particular, strong semicomplete compositions form a significant generalization of strong quasi-transitive digraphs.
In this paper, we study the structural properties of semicomplete compositions and obtain results on connectivity, paths, cycles, strong spanning subdigraphs and acyclic spanning subgraphs. Our results show that this class of digraphs shares some nice properties of quasi-transitive digraphs.
Duality of graded graphs through operads

Pairs of graded graphs, together with the Fomin property of graded graph duality, are rich combinatorial structures providing among other a framework for enumeration. The prototypical example is the one of the Young graded graph of integer partitions, allowing us to connect number of standard Young tableaux and numbers of permutations. Here, we use operads, that algebraic devices abstracting the notion of composition of combinatorial objects, to build pairs of graded graphs. For this, we first construct a pair of graded graphs where vertices are syntax trees, the elements of free nonsymmetric operads. This pair of graphs is dual for a new notion of duality called $φ$-diagonal duality, similar to the ones introduced by Fomin. We also provide a general way to build pairs of graded graphs from operads, wherein underlying posets are analogous to the Young lattice. Some examples of operads leading to new pairs of graded graphs involving integer compositions, Motzkin paths, and $m$-trees are considered.
Shift-Plethystic Trees and Rogers-Ramanujan Identitites
By studying non-commutative series in an infinite alphabet we introduce shift-plethystic trees and a class of integer compositions as new combinatorial models for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We prove that the language associated to shift-plethystic trees can be expressed as a non-commutative generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. By specializing the noncommutative series to $q$-series we obtain new combinatorial interpretations to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of signed integer compositions. We introduce the operation of shift-plethysm on non-commutative series and use this to obtain interesting enumerative identities involving compositions and partitions related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
A System of Billiard and Its Application to Information-Theoretic Entropy

In this article, we define an information-theoretic entropy based on the Ihara zeta function of a graph which is called the Ihara entropy. A dynamical system consists of a billiard ball and a set of reflectors correspond to a combinatorial graph. The reflectors are represented by the vertices of the graph. Movement of the billiard ball between two reflectors is represented by the edges. The prime cycles of this graph generate the bi-infinite sequences of the corresponding symbolic dynamical system. The number of different prime cycles of a given length can be expressed in terms of the adjacency matrix of the oriented line graph. It also constructs the formal power series expansion of Ihara zeta function. Therefore, the Ihara entropy has a deep connection with the dynamical system of billiards. As an information-theoretic entropy, it fulfils the generalized Shannon-Khinchin axioms. It is a weakly decomposable entropy whose composition law is given by the Lazard formal group law.
