Resolutions of Convex Geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
Convex geometries (Edelman and Jamison, 1985) are finite combinatorial structures dual to union-closed antimatroids or learning spaces. We define an operation of resolution for convex geometries, which replaces each element of a base convex geometry by a fiber convex geometry. Contrary to what happens for similar constructions -- compounds of hypergraphs, as in Chein, Habib and Maurer (1981), and compositions of set systems, as in Mohring and Radermacher (1984) -- , resolutions of convex geometries always yield a convex geometry. We investigate resolutions of special convex geometries: ordinal and affine. A resolution of ordinal convex geometries is again ordinal, but a resolution of affine convex geometries may fail to be affine. A notion of primitivity, which generalize the corresponding notion for posets, arises from resolutions: a convex geometry is primitive if it is not a resolution of smaller ones. We obtain a characterization of affine convex geometries that are primitive, and compute the number of primitive convex geometries on at most four elements. Several open problems are listed.

From non-unitary wheeled PROPs to smooth amplitudes and generalised convolutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the concept of TRAP (Traces and Permutations), which can roughly be viewed as a wheeled PROP (Products and Permutations) without unit. TRAPs are equipped with a horizontal concatenation and partial trace maps. Continuous morphisms on an infinite dimensional topological space and smooth kernels (resp. smoothing operators) on a closed manifold form a TRAP but not a wheeled PROP. We build the free objects in the category of TRAPs as TRAPs of graphs and show that a TRAP can be completed to a unitary TRAP (or wheeled PROP). We further show that it can be equipped with a vertical concatenation, which on the TRAP of linear homomorphisms of a vector space, amounts to the usual composition. The vertical concatenation in the TRAP of smooth kernels gives rise to generalised convolutions. Graphs whose vertices are decorated by smooth kernels (resp. smoothing operators) on a closed manifold form a TRAP. From their universal properties we build smooth amplitudes associated with the graph.

Fertilitopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce tools from discrete convexity theory and polyhedral geometry into the theory of West's stack-sorting map $s$. Associated to each permutation $π$ is a particular set $\mathcal V(π)$ of integer compositions that appears in a formula for the fertility of $π$, which is defined to be $|s^{-1}(π)|$. These compositions also feature prominently in more general formulas involving families of colored binary plane trees called troupes and in a formula that converts from free to classical cumulants in noncommutative probability theory. We show that $\mathcal V(π)$ is a transversal discrete polymatroid when it is nonempty. We define the fertilitope of $π$ to be the convex hull of $\mathcal V(π)$, and we prove a surprisingly simple characterization of fertilitopes as nestohedra arising from full binary plane trees. Using known facts about nestohedra, we provide a procedure for describing the structure of the fertilitope of $π$ directly from $π$ using Bousquet-Mélou's notion of the canonical tree of $π$. As a byproduct, we obtain a new combinatorial cumulant conversion formula in terms of generalizations of canonical trees that we call quasicanonical trees. We also apply our results on fertilitopes to study combinatorial properties of the stack-sorting map. In particular, we show that the set of fertility numbers has density $1$, and we determine all infertility numbers of size at most $126$. Finally, we reformulate the conjecture that $\sum_{σ\in s^{-1}(π)}x^{\text{des}(σ)+1}$ is always real-rooted in terms of nestohedra, and we propose natural ways in which this new version of the conjecture could be extended.

Variants of Jacobi polynomials in coding theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the complete joint Jacobi polynomial of two linear codes of length $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\mathbb{Z}_k$. We give the MacWilliams type identity for the complete joint Jacobi polynomials of codes. We also introduce the concepts of the average Jacobi polynomial and the average complete joint Jacobi polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\mathbb{Z}_k$. We give a representation of the average of the complete joint Jacobi polynomials of two linear codes of length $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\mathbb{Z}_k$ in terms of the compositions of $n$ and its distribution in the codes. Further we present a generalization of the representation for the average of the $(g+1)$-fold complete joint Jacobi polynomials of codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{k}$. Finally, we give the notion of the average Jacobi intersection number of two codes.

Majority-closed minions of Boolean functions

The 93 minions of Boolean functions stable under left composition with the clone of self-dual monotone functions are described. As an easy consequence, all $(C_1,C_2)$-stable classes of Boolean functions are determined for an arbitrary clone $C_1$ and for any clone $C_2$ containing the clone of self-dual monotone functions.

Anti-palindromic compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A palindromic composition of $n$ is a composition of $n$ which can be read the same way forwards and backwards. In this paper we define an anti-palindromic composition of $n$ to be a composition of $n$ which has no mirror symmetry amongst its parts. We then give a surprising connection between the number of anti-palindromic compositions of $n$ and the so-called tribonacci sequence, a generalization of the Fibonacci sequence. We conclude by defining a new q-analogue of the Fibonacci sequence, which is related to certain equivalence classes of anti-palindromic compositions

Compositions that are palindromic modulo $m$
In recent work, G. E. Andrews and G. Simay prove a surprising relation involving parity palindromic compositions, and ask whether a combinatorial proof can be found. We extend their results to a more general class of compositions that are palindromic modulo $m$, that includes the parity palindromic case when $m=2$. We then provide combinatorial proofs for the cases $m=2$ and $m=3$.

A note on modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ denote a prime number. In this note, we focus on the modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes defined in [3]. We define the primary module of a modular Terwilliger algebra of an association scheme and determine all its composition factors up to isomorphism. We then characterize the $p'$-valenced association schemes by some properties of their modular Terwilliger algebras. The corollaries about the modular Terwilliger algebras of association schemes are given.

Rooted tree graphs and the Butcher group: Combinatorics of elementary perturbation theory
Published in Sojourns in Probability Theory and Statistical Physics II (Vladas Sidoravicius, editor), Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics 299, Springer, Singapore, 2019, pp. 135-166 • Search Publication
The perturbation expansion of the solution of a fixed point equation or of an ordinary differential equation may be expressed as a power series in the perturbation parameter. The terms in this series are indexed by rooted trees and depend on a parameter in the equation in a way determined by the structure of the tree. Power series of this form may be considered more generally; there are two interesting and useful group structures on these series, corresponding to operations of composition and substitution. The composition operation defines the Butcher group, an infinite dimensional group that was first introduced in the context of numerical analysis. This survey discusses various ways of realizing these rooted trees: as labeled rooted trees, or increasing labeled rooted trees, or unlabeled rooted trees. It is argued that the simplest framework is to use labeled rooted trees.
The H-join of arbitrary families of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $H$-join of a family of graphs $\mathcal{G}=\{G_1, \dots, G_p\}$, also called the generalized composition, $H[G_1, \dots, G_p]$, where all graphs are undirected, simple and finite, is the graph obtained by replacing each vertex $i$ of $H$ by $G_i$ and adding to the edges of all graphs in $\mathcal{G}$ the edges of the join $G_i \vee G_j$, for every edge $ij$ of $H$. Some well known graph operations are particular cases of the $H$-join of a family of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ as it is the case of the lexicographic product (also called composition) of two graphs $H$ and $G$, $H[G]$. During long time the known expressions for the determination of the entire spectrum of the $H$-join in terms of the spectra of its components and an associated matrix were limited to families of regular graphs. In this work, we extend such a determination, as well as the determination of the characteristic polynomial, to families of arbitrary graphs. From the obtained results, the eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of the $H$-join can also be determined in terms of the adjacency matrices of the components and an associated matrix.
Palindromic and Colored Superdiagonal Compositions

A superdiagonal composition is one in which the $i$-th part or summand is of size greater than or equal to $i$. In this paper, we study the number of palindromic superdiagonal compositions and colored superdiagonal compositions. In particular, we give generating functions and explicit combinatorial formulas involving binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the first kind.

Symmetry of Narayana numbers and rowvacuation of root posets
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 9 (2021) e53 • View PublicationBIB
For a Weyl group $W$ of rank $r$, the $W$-Catalan number is the number of antichains of the poset of positive roots, and the $W$-Narayana numbers refine the $W$-Catalan number by keeping track of the cardinalities of these antichains. The $W$-Narayana numbers are symmetric, i.e., the number of antichains of cardinality $k$ is the same as the number of cardinality $r-k$. However, this symmetry is far from obvious. Panyushev posed the problem of defining an involution on root poset antichains that exhibits the symmetry of the $W$-Narayana numbers. Rowmotion and rowvacuation are two related operators, defined as compositions of "toggles," that give a dihedral action on the set of antichains of any ranked poset. Rowmotion acting on root posets has been the subject of a significant amount of research in the recent past. We prove that for the root posets of classical types, rowvacuation is Panyushev's desired involution.

The birational Lalanne-Kreweras involution
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 2, pp. 227-265 • View PublicationBIB
The Lalanne-Kreweras involution is an involution on the set of Dyck paths which combinatorially exhibits the symmetry of the number of valleys and major index statistics. We define piecewise-linear and birational extensions of the Lalanne-Kreweras involution. Actually, we show that the Lalanne-Kreweras involution is a special case of a more general operator, called rowvacuation, which acts on the antichains of any graded poset. Rowvacuation, like the closely related and more studied rowmotion operator, is a composition of toggles. We obtain the piecewise-linear and birational lifts of the Lalanne-Kreweras involution by using the piecewise-linear and birational toggles of Einstein and Propp. We show that the symmetry properties of the Lalanne-Kreweras involution extend to these piecewise-linear and birational lifts.

Automorphism groups of graphs of bounded Hadwiger number
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2025:9, 39pp • View PublicationBIB
We determine the structure of automorphism groups of finite graphs of bounded Hadwiger number. Our proof includes a structural analysis of finite edge-transitive graphs. In particular, we show that for connected, $K_{h+1}$-minor-free, edge-transitive, twin-free, finite graphs the non-abelian composition factors of the automorphism group have bounded order. We use this to show that the automorphism groups of finite graphs of bounded Hadwiger number are obtained by repeated group extensions using abelian groups, symmetric groups and groups of bounded order.

Efficient computation of the oriented chromatic number of recursively defined digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider colorings of oriented graphs, i.e. digraphs without cycles of length 2. Given some oriented graph $G=(V,E)$, an oriented $r$-coloring for $G$ is a partition of the vertex set $V$ into $r$ independent sets, such that all the arcs between two of these sets have the same direction. The oriented chromatic number of $G$ is the smallest integer $r$ such that $G$ permits an oriented $r$-coloring. In this paper we consider the Oriented Chromatic Number problem on classes of recursively defined oriented graphs. Oriented co-graphs (short for oriented complement reducible graphs) can be recursively defined defined from the single vertex graph by applying the disjoint union and order composition. This recursive structure allows to compute an optimal oriented coloring and the oriented chromatic number in linear time. We generalize this result using the concept of perfect orderable graphs. Therefore, we show that for acyclic transitive digraphs every greedy coloring along a topological ordering leads to an optimal oriented coloring. Msp-digraphs (short for minimal series-parallel digraphs) can be defined from the single vertex graph by applying the parallel composition and series composition. We prove an upper bound of $7$ for the oriented chromatic number for msp-digraphs and we give an example to show that this is bound best possible. We apply this bound and the recursive structure of msp-digraphs to obtain a linear time solution for computing the oriented chromatic number of msp-digraphs. In order to generalize the results on computing the oriented chromatic number of special graph classes, we consider the parameterized complexity of the Oriented Chromatic Number problem by so-called structural parameters, which are measuring the difficulty of decomposing a graph into a special tree-structure

Renormalization of quasisymmetric functions
As a natural basis of the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, monomial quasisymmetric functions are formal power series defined from compositions. The same definition applies to left weak compositions, while leads to divergence for other weak compositions. We adapt the method of renormalization in quantum field theory, in the framework of Connes and Kreimer, to deal with such divergency. This approach defines monomial quasisymmetric functions for any weak composition as power series while extending the quasi-shuffle (stuffle) relation satisfied by the usual quasisymmetric functions. The algebra of renormalized quasisymmetric functions thus obtained turns out to be isomorphic to the quasi-shuffle algebra of weak compositions, giving the former a natural Hopf algebra structure and the latter a power series realization. This isomorphism also gives the free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra a power series realization, in support of a suggestion of Rota that Rota-Baxter algebra should provide a broad context for generalizations of symmetric functions.
Regular sequences and synchronized sequences in abstract numeration systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of $b$-regular sequences was generalized to abstract numeration systems by Maes and Rigo in 2002. Their definition is based on a notion of $\mathcal{S}$-kernel that extends that of $b$-kernel. However, this definition does not allow us to generalize all of the many characterizations of $b$-regular sequences. In this paper, we present an alternative definition of $\mathcal{S}$-kernel, and hence an alternative definition of $\mathcal{S}$-regular sequences, which enables us to use recognizable formal series in order to generalize most (if not all) known characterizations of $b$-regular sequences to abstract numeration systems. We then give two characterizations of $\mathcal{S}$-automatic sequences as particular $\mathcal{S}$-regular sequences. Next, we present a general method to obtain various families of $\mathcal{S}$-regular sequences by enumerating $\mathcal{S}$-recognizable properties of $\mathcal{S}$-automatic sequences. As an example of the many possible applications of this method, we show that, provided that addition is $\mathcal{S}$-recognizable, the factor complexity of an $\mathcal{S}$-automatic sequence defines an $\mathcal{S}$-regular sequence. In the last part of the paper, we study $\mathcal{S}$-synchronized sequences. Along the way, we prove that the formal series obtained as the composition of a synchronized relation and a recognizable series is recognizable. As a consequence, the composition of an $\mathcal{S}$-synchronized sequence and a $\mathcal{S}$-regular sequence is shown to be $\mathcal{S}$-regular. All our results are presented in an arbitrary dimension $d$ and for an arbitrary semiring $\mathbb{K}$.

Testability of relations between permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the study of property testing problems concerning relations between permutations. In such problems, the input is a tuple $(σ_1,\dotsc,σ_d)$ of permutations on $\{1,\dotsc,n\}$, and one wishes to determine whether this tuple satisfies a certain system of relations $E$, or is far from every tuple that satisfies $E$. If this computational problem can be solved by querying only a small number of entries of the given permutations, we say that $E$ is testable. For example, when $d=2$ and $E$ consists of the single relation $\mathsf{XY=YX}$, this corresponds to testing whether $σ_1σ_2=σ_2σ_1$, where $σ_1σ_2$ and $σ_2σ_1$ denote composition of permutations. We define a collection of graphs, naturally associated with the system $E$, that encodes all the information relevant to the testability of $E$. We then prove two theorems that provide criteria for testability and non-testability in terms of expansion properties of these graphs. By virtue of a deep connection with group theory, both theorems are applicable to wide classes of systems of relations. In addition, we formulate the well-studied group-theoretic notion of stability in permutations as a special case of the testability notion above, interpret all previous works on stability as testability results, survey previous results on stability from a computational perspective, and describe many directions for future research on stability and testability.

Shadowing for families of endomorphisms of generalized group shifts
Published in Discrete Contin Dyn Syst Ser A (2022), 42 (1) : 285-299 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a countable monoid and let $A$ be an Artinian group (resp. an Artinian module). Let $Σ\subset A^G$ be a closed subshift which is also a subgroup (resp. a submodule) of $A^G$. Suppose that $Γ$ is a finitely generated monoid consisting of pairwise commuting cellular automata $Σ\to Σ$ that are also homomorphisms of groups (resp. homomorphisms of modules) with monoid binary operation given by composition of maps. We show that the valuation action of $Γ$ on $Σ$ satisfies a natural intrinsic shadowing property. Generalizations are also established for families of endomorphisms of admissible group subshifts.

Covariance within Random Integer Compositions
Fix a positive integer $N$. Select an additive composition $ξ$ of $N$ uniformly out of $2^{N-1}$ possibilities. The interplay between the number of parts in $ξ$ and the maximum part in $ξ$ is our focus. It is not surprising that correlations $ρ(N)$ between these quantities are negative; we earlier gave inconclusive evidence that $\lim_{N \to \infty} ρ(N)$ is strictly less than zero. A proof of this result would imply asymptotic dependence. We now retract our presumption in such an unforeseen outcome. Similar experimental findings apply when $ξ$ is a 1-free composition, i.e., possessing only parts $\geq 2$.
