Generating Posets Beyond N
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce iposets---posets with interfaces---equipped with a novel gluing composition along interfaces and the standard parallel composition. We study their basic algebraic properties as well as the hierarchy of gluing-parallel posets generated from singletons by finitary applications of the two compositions. We show that not only series-parallel posets, but also interval orders, which seem more interesting for modelling concurrent and distributed systems, can be generated, but not all posets. Generating posets is also important for constructing free algebras for concurrent semirings and Kleene algebras that allow compositional reasoning about such systems.

A product of invariant random permutations has the same small cycle structure as uniform
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use moment method to understand the cycle structure of the composition of independent invariant permutations. We prove that under a good control on fixed points and cycles of length 2, the limiting joint distribution of the number of small cycles is the same as in the uniform case i.e. for any positive integer k, the number of cycles of length k converges to the Poisson distribution with parameter 1/k and is asymptotically independent of the number of cycles of length k' different from k.

Upper Bounds of Schubert Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $w$ be a permutation of $\{1,2,\ldots,n \}$, and let $D(w)$ be the Rothe diagram of $w$. The Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ can be realized as the dual character of the flagged Weyl module associated to $D(w)$. This implies a coefficient-wise inequality \[\mathrm{Min}_w(x)\leq \mathfrak{S}_w(x)\leq \mathrm{Max}_w(x),\] where both $\mathrm{Min}_w(x)$ and $\mathrm{Max}_w(x)$ are polynomials determined by $D(w)$. Fink, Mészáros and St.$\,$Dizier found that $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ equals the lower bound $\mathrm{Min}_w(x)$ if and only if $w$ avoids twelve permutation patterns. In this paper, we show that $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ reaches the upper bound $\mathrm{Max}_w(x)$ if and only if $w$ avoids two permutation patterns 1432 and 1423. Similarly, for any given composition $α\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^n$, one can define a lower bound $\mathrm{Min}_α(x)$ and an upper bound $\mathrm{Max}_α(x)$ for the key polynomial $κ_α(x)$. Hodges and Yong established that $κ_α(x)$ equals $\mathrm{Min}_α(x)$ if and only if $α$ avoids five composition patterns. We show that $κ_α(x)$ equals $\mathrm{Max}_α(x)$ if and only if $α$ avoids a single composition pattern $(0,2)$. As an application, we obtain that when $α$ avoids $(0,2)$, the key polynomial $κ_α(x)$ is Lorentzian, partially verifying a conjecture of Huh, Matherne, Mészáros and St.$\,$Dizier.
Generalized List Decoding
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper concerns itself with the question of list decoding for general adversarial channels, e.g., bit-flip ($\textsf{XOR}$) channels, erasure channels, $\textsf{AND}$ ($Z$-) channels, $\textsf{OR}$ channels, real adder channels, noisy typewriter channels, etc. We precisely characterize when exponential-sized (or positive rate) $(L-1)$-list decodable codes (where the list size $L$ is a universal constant) exist for such channels. Our criterion asserts that: "For any given general adversarial channel, it is possible to construct positive rate $(L-1)$-list decodable codes if and only if the set of completely positive tensors of order-$L$ with admissible marginals is not entirely contained in the order-$L$ confusability set associated to the channel." The sufficiency is shown via random code construction (combined with expurgation or time-sharing). The necessity is shown by 1. extracting equicoupled subcodes (generalization of equidistant code) from any large code sequence using hypergraph Ramsey's theorem, and 2. significantly extending the classic Plotkin bound in coding theory to list decoding for general channels using duality between the completely positive tensor cone and the copositive tensor cone. In the proof, we also obtain a new fact regarding asymmetry of joint distributions, which be may of independent interest. Other results include 1. List decoding capacity with asymptotically large $L$ for general adversarial channels; 2. A tight list size bound for most constant composition codes (generalization of constant weight codes); 3. Rederivation and demystification of Blinovsky's [Bli86] characterization of the list decoding Plotkin points (threshold at which large codes are impossible); 4. Evaluation of general bounds ([WBBJ]) for unique decoding in the error correction code setting.

Jordan-Hölder with uniqueness for semimodular semilattices
We present a short proof of the Jordan-Hölder theorem with uniqueness for semimodular semilattice: Given two maximal chains in a semimodular semilattice of finite height, they both have the same length. Moreover there is a unique bijection that takes the prime intervals of the first chain to the prime intervals of the second chain such that the interval and its image are up-and-down projective. The theorem generalizes the classical result that all composition series of a finite group have the same length and isomorphic factors. Moreover, it shows that the isomorphism is in some sense unique.

Real polynomials with constrained real divisors. I. Fundamental groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the late 80s, V.~Arnold and V.~Vassiliev initiated the topological study of the space of real univariate polynomials of a given degree d and with no real roots of multiplicity exceeding a given positive integer. Expanding their studies, we consider the spaces of real monic univariate polynomials of degree d whose real divisors avoid sequences of root multiplicities taken from a given poset of compositions which is closed under certain natural combinatorial operations. In this paper, we concentrate on the fundamental group of such spaces. We find explicit presentations for the fundamental groups in terms of generators and relations and show that in a number of cases they are free with rank bounded from above by a quadratic function in d. We also show that the fundamental group stabilizes for d large. We further show that the fundamental groups admit an interpretation as special bordisms of immersions of 1-manifolds into the cylinder S^1 \times R, whose images avoid the tangency patterns from the poset with respect to the generators of the cylinder.

Maximally additively reducible subsets of the integers
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, 23 (2020), Article 20.10.5 • Search Publication
Let $A, B \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be two finite sets of natural numbers. We say that $B$ is an additive divisor for $A$ if there exists some $C \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with $A = B+C$. We prove that among those subsets of $\{0, 1, \ldots, k\}$ which have $0$ as an element, the full interval $\{0, 1, \ldots,k\}$ has the most divisors. To generalize to sets which do not have $0$ as an element, we prove a correspondence between additive divisors and lunar multiplication, introduced by Appelgate, LeBrun and Sloane (2011) in their study of a kind of min/max arithmetic. The number of binary lunar divisors is related to compositions of integers which are restricted in that the first part is greater or equal to all other parts. We establish some bounds on such compositions to show that $\{1, \ldots, k\}$ has the most divisors among all subsets of $\{0, 1, \ldots, k\}$. These results resolve two conjectures of LeBrun et al. regarding the maximal number of lunar binary divisors, a special case of a more general conjecture about lunar divisors in arbitrary bases. We resolve this third conjecture by generalizing from sum-sets to sum-multisets.

Total graph of a signed graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The total graph is built by joining the graph to its line graph by means of the incidences. We introduce a similar construction for signed graphs. Under two similar definitions of the line signed graph, we define the corresponding total signed graph and we show that it is stable under switching. We consider balance, the frustration index and frustration number, and the largest eigenvalue. In the regular case we compute the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of the total graph and the spectra of certain compositions, and we determine some with exactly two main eigenvalues.

Non-Hyperoctahedral Categories of Two-Colored Partitions, Part I: New Categories
Published • View PublicationBIB
Compact quantum groups can be studied by investigating their co-representation categories in analogy to the Schur-Weyl/Tannaka-Krein approach. For the special class of (unitary) "easy" quantum groups these categories arise from a combinatorial structure: Rows of two-colored points form the objects, partitions of two such rows the morphisms; vertical/horizontal concatenation and reflection give composition, monoidal product and involution. Of the four possible classes $\mathcal{O}$, $\mathcal{B}$, $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ of such categories (inspired respectively by the classical orthogonal, bistochastic, symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups) we treat the first three -- the non-hyperoctahedral ones. We introduce many new examples of such categories. They are defined in terms of subtle combinations of block size, coloring and non-crossing conditions. This article is part of an effort to classify all non-hyperoctahedral categories of two-colored partitions. The article is purely combinatorial in nature; The quantum group aspects are left out.

By establishing relations between operators on compositions, we show that the posets of compositions arising from the right and left Pieri rules for noncommutative Schur functions can each be endowed with both the structure of dual graded graphs and dual filtered graphs when paired with the poset of compositions arising from the Pieri rules for quasisymmetric Schur functions and its deformation.

A Note on M-convex Functions on Jump Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
A jump system is defined as a set of integer points (vectors) with a certain exchange property, generalizing the concepts of matroids, delta-matroids, and base polyhedra of integral polymatroids (or submodular systems). A discrete convexity concept is defined for functions on constant-parity jump systems and it has been used in graph theory and algebra. In this paper we call it "jump M-convexity" and extend it to "jump M-natural-convexity" for functions defined on a larger class of jump systems. By definition, every jump M-convex function is a jump M-natural-convex function, and we show the equivalence of these concepts by establishing an (injective) embedding of jump M-natural-convex functions in n variables into the set of jump M-convex functions in n+1 variables. Using this equivalence we show further that jump M-natural-convex functions admit a number of natural operations such as aggregation, projection (partial minimization), convolution, composition, and transformation by a network.
Operads of (noncrossing) partitions, interacting bialgebras, and moment-cumulant relations
Published in Advances in Mathematics 369, 2020, 107170 • View PublicationBIB
We establish and explore a relationship between two approaches to moment-cumulant relations in free probability theory: on one side the main approach, due to Speicher, given in terms of Möbius inversion on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, and on the other side the more recent non-commutative shuffle-algebra approach, where the moment-cumulant relations take the form of certain exponential-logarithm relations. We achieve this by exhibiting two operad structures on (noncrossing) partitions, different in nature: one is an ordinary, non-symmetric operad whose composition law is given by insertion into gaps between elements, the other is a coloured, symmetric operad with composition law expressing refinement of blocks. We show that these operad structures interact so as to make the corresponding incidence bialgebra of the former a comodule bialgebra for the latter. Furthermore, this interaction is compatible with the shuffle structure and thus unveils how the two approaches are intertwined. Moreover, the constructions and results are general enough to extend to ordinary set partitions.

Representability of permutation representations on coalgebras and the isomorphism problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a group and let $ρ\colon G\to\operatorname{Sym}(V)$ be a permutation representation of $G$ on a set $V$. We prove that there is a faithful $G$-coalgebra $C$ such that $G$ arises as the image of the restriction of $\operatorname{Aut}(C)$ to $G(C)$, the set of grouplike elements of $C$. Furthermore, we show that $V$ can be regarded as a subset of $G(C)$ invariant through the $G$-action, and that the composition of the inclusion $G\hookrightarrow\operatorname{Aut}(C)$ with the restriction $\operatorname{Aut}(C)\to\operatorname{Sym}(V)$ is precisely $ρ$. We use these results to prove that isomorphism classes of certain families of groups can be distinguished through the coalgebras on which they act faithfully.

On Characterizations for Subclasses of Directed Co-Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Undirected co-graphs are those graphs which can be generated from the single vertex graph by disjoint union and join operations. Co-graphs are exactly the P_4-free graphs (where P_4 denotes the path on 4 vertices). Co-graphs itself and several subclasses haven been intensively studied. Among these are trivially perfect graphs, threshold graphs, weakly quasi threshold graphs, and simple co-graphs. Directed co-graphs are precisely those digraphs which can be defined from the single vertex graph by applying the disjoint union, order composition, and series composition. By omitting the series composition we obtain the subclass of oriented co-graphs which has been analyzed by Lawler in the 1970s and the restriction to linear expressions was recently studied by Boeckner. There are only a few versions of subclasses of directed co-graphs until now. By transmitting the restrictions of undirected subclasses to the directed classes, we define the corresponding subclasses for directed co-graphs. We consider directed and oriented versions of threshold graphs, simple co-graphs, co-simple co-graphs, trivially perfect graphs, co-trivially perfect graphs, weakly quasi threshold graphs and co-weakly quasi threshold graphs. For all these classes we provide characterizations by finite sets of minimal forbidden induced subdigraphs. Further we analyze relations between these graph classes.

Biembeddings of cycle systems using integer Heffter arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we will show the existence of a face $2$-colourable biembedding of the complete graph onto an orientable surface where each face is a cycle of a fixed length $k$, for infinitely many values of $k$. In particular, under certain conditions, we show that there exists at least $(n-2)[(p-2)!]^2/(e^2 kn)$ non-isomorphic face $2$-colourable biembeddings of $K_{2nk+1}$ in which all faces are cycles of length $k=4p+3$. These conditions are: $n\equiv 1\mod 4$, $k\equiv 3\mod 4$ and either $n$ is prime or $n\gg k$ and $n\equiv 0\mod 3$ implies $p\equiv 1\mod 3$. To achieve this result we begin by verifying the existence of $(n-2)[(p-2)!/e]^2$ non-equivalent Heffter arrays, $H(n;k)$, which satisfy the conditions: (1) for each row and each column the sequential partial sums determined by the natural ordering must be distinct modulo $2nk+1$; (2) the composition of the natural orderings of the rows and columns is equivalent to a single cycle permutation on the entries in the array. The existence of Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ that satisfy condition (1) was established earlier in \cite{BCDY} and in this current paper we vary this construction and show that there are at least $(n-2)[(p-2)!/e]^2$ such non-equivalent $H(n;k)$ that satisfy condition (1) and then show that each of these Heffter arrays also satisfy condition (2) under certain conditions.

Arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at the same vertex in compositions of digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A digraph $D=(V, A)$ has a good pair at a vertex $r$ if $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at $r$. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ When $T$ is arbitrary, we obtain the following result: every strong digraph composition $Q$ in which $n_i\ge 2$ for every $1\leq i\leq t$, has a good pair at every vertex of $Q.$ The condition of $n_i\ge 2$ in this result cannot be relaxed. When $T$ is semicomplete, we characterize semicomplete compositions with a good pair, which generalizes the corresponding characterization by Bang-Jensen and Huang (J. Graph Theory, 1995) for quasi-transitive digraphs. As a result, we can decide in polynomial time whether a given semicomplete composition has a good pair rooted at a given vertex.
Globally simple Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ when $k\equiv 0,3\mod 4$
Square Heffter arrays are $n\times n$ arrays such that each row and each column contains $k$ filled cells, each row and column sum is divisible by $2nk+1$ and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for each integer $1\leq x\leq nk$. Archdeacon noted that a Heffter array, satisfying two additional conditions, yields a face $2$-colourable embedding of the complete graph $K_{2nk+1}$ on an orientable surface, where for each colour, the faces give a $k$-cycle system. Moreover, a cyclic permutation on the vertices acts as an automorphism of the embedding. These necessary conditions pertain to cyclic orderings of the entries in each row and each column of the Heffter array and are: (1) for each row and each column the sequential partial sums determined by the cyclic ordering must be distinct modulo $2nk+1$; (2) the composition of the cyclic orderings of the rows and columns is equivalent to a single cycle permutation on the entries in the array. We construct Heffter arrays that satisfy condition (1) whenever (a) $k\equiv 0\mod 4$; or (b) $n\equiv 1\mod 4$ and $k\equiv 3\mod 4$; or (c) $n\equiv 0\mod 4$, $k\equiv3\mod 4$ and $n\gg k$. As corollaries to the above we obtain pairs of orthogonal $k$-cycle decompositions of $K_{2nk+1}$.

Combinatorial homotopy theory for operads
We introduce an explicit combinatorial characterization of the minimal model ${\cal O}_{\infty}$ of the coloured operad ${\cal O}$ encoding non-symmetric operads. In our description of ${\cal O}_{\infty}$, the spaces of operations are defined in terms of hypergraph polytopes and the composition structure generalizes the one of the $A_{\infty}$-operad. As further generalizations of this construction, we present a combinatorial description of the $W$-construction applied on ${\cal O}$, as well as of the minimal model of the coloured operad ${\cal C}$ encoding non-symmetric cyclic operads.

$e$-positivity of vertical strip LLT polynomials
In this article we prove the $e$-positivity of $G_{\mathbfν}[X;q+1]$ when $G_{\mathbfν}[X;q]$ is a vertical strip LLT polynomial. This property has been conjectured by Alexandersson and Panova, and by Garsia, Haglund, Qiu and Romero, and it implies several $e$-positivities conjectured by them and also by Bergeron. We make use of a result of Carlsson and Mellit that shows that a vertical strip LLT polynomial can be obtained by applying certain compositions of operators of the Dyck path algebra to the constant $1$. Our proof gives in fact an algorithm to expand these symmetric functions in the elementary basis, and it shows, as a byproduct, that these compositions of operators are actually multiplication operators.

Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.
