Asymptotic normality of integer compositions inside a rectangle
Among all restricted integer compositions with at most $m$ parts, each of which has size at most $l$, choose one uniformly at random. Which integer does this composition represent? In the current note, we show that underlying distribution is, for large $m$ and $l$, approximately normal with mean value $\frac{ml}{2}$.

Motivated by examples of symmetrically constrained compositions, super convex partitions, and super convex compositions, we initiate the study of partitions and compositions constrained by graph Laplacian minors. We provide a complete description of the multivariate generating functions for such compositions in the case of trees. We answer a question due to Corteel, Savage, and Wilf regarding super convex compositions, which we describe as compositions constrained by Laplacian minors for cycles; we extend this solution to the study of compositions constrained by Laplacian minors of leafed cycles. Connections are established and conjectured between compositions constrained by Laplacian minors of leafed cycles of prime length and algebraic/combinatorial properties of reflexive simplices.

A k-composition of n is a sequence of length k of positive integers summing up to n. In this paper, we investigate the number of k-compositions of n satisfying two natural coprimality conditions. Namely, we first give an exact asymptotic formula for the number of k-compositions having the first summand coprime to the others. Then, we estimate the number of k-compositions whose summands are all pairwise coprime.

In this paper we study $γ$-structures filtered by topological genus. $γ$-structures are a class of RNA pseudoknot structures that plays a key role in the context of polynomial time folding of RNA pseudoknot structures. A $γ$-structure is composed by specific building blocks, that have topological genus less than or equal to $γ$, where composition means concatenation and nesting of such blocks. Our main results are the derivation of a new bivariate generating function for $γ$-structures via symbolic methods, the singularity analysis of the solutions and a central limit theorem for the distribution of topological genus in $γ$-structures of given length. In our derivation specific bivariate polynomials play a central role. Their coefficients count particular motifs of fixed topological genus and they are of relevance in the context of genus recursion and novel folding algorithms.

We study pairs and m--tuples of compositions of a positive integer n with parts restricted to a subset P of positive integers. We obtain some exact enumeration results for the number of tuples of such compositions having the same number of parts. Under the uniform probability model, we obtain the asymptotics for the probability that two or, more generally, m randomly and independently chosen compositions of n have the same number of parts. For a large class of compositions, we show how a nice interplay between complex analysis and probability theory allows to get full asymptotics for this probability. Our results extend an earlier work of Bóna and Knopfmacher. While we restrict our attention to compositions, our approach is also of interest for tuples of other combinatorial structures having the same number of parts.
Rectification of Composition Tableaux
In this paper we define an algorithm for rectifying one cell in a composition tableau. We then describe a generalization of this rectification process. The generalization is from one cell in the first column to any number of cells in the first column, provided they are bottom-justified.
New Wilf-equivalence results for dashed patterns

We give a sufficient condition for the two dashed patterns $τ^{(1)}-τ^{(2)}-\cdots-τ^{(\ell)}$ and $τ^{(\ell)}-τ^{(\ell-1)}-\cdots-τ^{(1)}$ to be (strongly) Wilf-equivalent. This permits to solve in a unified way several problems of Heubach and Mansour on Wilf-equivalences on words and compositions, as well as a conjecture of Baxter and Pudwell on Wilf-equivalences on permutations. We also give a better explanation of the equidistribution of the parameters $\MAK+\bMAJ$ and $\MAK'+\bMAJ$ on ordered set partitions. These results can be viewed as consequences of a simple proposition which states that the set valued statistics "descent set'' and "rise set'' are equidistributed over each equivalence class of the partially commutative monoid generated by a poset $(X,\leq)$.
Lifted generalized permutahedra and composition polynomials

Generalized permutahedra are the polytopes obtained from the permutahedron by changing the edge lengths while preserving the edge directions, possibly identifying vertices along the way. We introduce a "lifting" construction for these polytopes, which turns an $n$-dimensional generalized permutahedron into an $(n+1)$-dimensional one. We prove that this construction gives rise to Stasheff's multiplihedron from homotopy theory, and to the more general "nestomultiplihedra," answering two questions of Devadoss and Forcey.
We construct a subdivision of any lifted generalized permutahedron whose pieces are indexed by compositions. The volume of each piece is given by a polynomial whose combinatorial properties we investigate. We show how this "composition polynomial" arises naturally in the polynomial interpolation of an exponential function. We prove that its coefficients are positive integers, and present evidence suggesting that they may also be unimodal.
Testing Low Complexity Affine-Invariant Properties

Invariance with respect to linear or affine transformations of the domain is arguably the most common symmetry exhibited by natural algebraic properties. In this work, we show that any low complexity affine-invariant property of multivariate functions over finite fields is testable with a constant number of queries. This immediately reproves, for instance, that the Reed-Muller code over F_p of degree d < p is testable, with an argument that uses no detailed algebraic information about polynomials except that low degree is preserved by composition with affine maps.
The complexity of an affine-invariant property P refers to the maximum complexity, as defined by Green and Tao (Ann. Math. 2008), of the sets of linear forms used to characterize P. A more precise statement of our main result is that for any fixed prime p >=2 and fixed integer R >= 2, any affine-invariant property P of functions f: F_p^n -> [R] is testable, assuming the complexity of the property is less than p. Our proof involves developing analogs of graph-theoretic techniques in an algebraic setting, using tools from higher-order Fourier analysis.
Combinatorics of $γ$-structures
In this paper we study canonical $γ$-structures, a class of RNA pseudoknot structures that plays a key role in the context of polynomial time folding of RNA pseudoknot structures. A $γ$-structure is composed by specific building blocks, that have topological genus less than or equal to $γ$, where composition means concatenation and nesting of such blocks. Our main result is the derivation of the generating function of $γ$-structures via symbolic enumeration using so called irreducible shadows. We furthermore recursively compute the generating polynomials of irreducible shadows of genus $\le γ$. $γ$-structures are constructed via $γ$-matchings. For $1\le γ\le 10$, we compute Puiseux-expansions at the unique, dominant singularities, allowing us to derive simple asymptotic formulas for the number of $γ$-structures.

In this work, we give combinatorial proofs for generating functions of two problems, i.e., flushed partitions and concave compositions of even length. We also give combinatorial interpretation of one problem posed by Sylvester involving flushed partitions and then prove it. For these purposes, we first describe an involution and use it to prove core identities. Using this involution with modifications, we prove several problems of different nature, including Andrews' partition identities involving initial repetitions and partition theoretical interpretations of three mock theta functions of third order $f(q)$, $φ(q)$ and $ψ(q)$. An identity of Ramanujan is proved combinatorially. Several new identities are also established.
On a property of superposition of the generating functions ln(1/(1-F(x)))
Obtained a new property of superposition of the generating functions ln(1/(1-F(x))), where F(x) - generating function with integer coefficients, which allows the construction a primality tests. The theorem which is based on compositions of positive numbers and its corollary are proved. Examples are given. Key words: Generating functions, superposition of generating functions, composition of a natural number.
Maximal rigid objects as noncrossing bipartite graphs
Let Q be a Dynkin quiver of type A. The bounded derived category of the path algebra of Q has an autoequivalence given by the composition of the Auslander-Reiten translate and the square of the shift functor. We classify the maximal rigid objects in the corresponding orbit category C(Q), in terms of bipartite noncrossing graphs (with loops) in a circle. We also describe the endomorphism algebras of the maximal rigid objects, and we prove that a certain class of these algebras are iterated tilted algebras of type A.

We prove that the number of monomer-dimer tilings of an $n\times n$ square grid, with $m<n$ monomers in which no four tiles meet at any point is $m2^m+(m+1)2^{m+1}$, when $m$ and $n$ have the same parity. In addition, we present a new proof of the result that there are $n2^{n-1}$ such tilings with $n$ monomers, which divides the tilings into $n$ classes of size $2^{n-1}$. The sum of these tilings over all monomer counts has the closed form $2^{n-1}(3n-4)+2$ and, curiously, this is equal to the sum of the squares of all parts in all compositions of $n$. We also describe two algorithms and a Gray code ordering for generating the $n2^{n-1}$ tilings with $n$ monomers, which are both based on our new proof.
Optimal antithickenings of claw-free trigraphs
Chudnovsky and Seymour's structure theorem for claw-free graphs has led to a multitude of recent results that exploit two structural operations: {\em compositions of strips} and {\em thickenings}. In this paper we consider the latter, proving that every claw-free graph has a unique optimal {\em antithickening}, where our definition of {\em optimal} is chosen carefully to respect the structural foundation of the graph. Furthermore, we give an algorithm to find the optimal antithickening in $O(m^2)$ time. For the sake of both completeness and ease of proof, we prove stronger results in the more general setting of trigraphs.

Haglund, Luoto, Mason, and van Willigenburg introduced a basis for quasisymmetric functions called the quasisymmetric Schur function basis, generated combinatorially through fillings of composition diagrams in much the same way as Schur functions are generated through reverse column-strict tableaux. We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions called the row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function basis, generated combinatorially through fillings of composition diagrams in much the same way as Schur functions are generated through row-strict tableaux. We describe the relationship between this new basis and other known bases for quasisymmetric functions, as well as its relationship to Schur polynomials. We obtain a refinement of the omega transform operator as a result of these relationships.

N. Hamilton and J. A. Thas describe a link between maximal arcs of Mathon type and partial flocks of the quadratic cone. This link is of a rather algebraic nature. In this paper we establish a geometric connection between these two structures. We also define a composition on the flock planes and use this to work out an analogue of the synthetic version of Mathon's Theorem. Finally, we show how it is possible to construct a maximal arc of Mathon type of degree 2d, containing a Denniston arc of degree d provided that there is a solution to a certain given system of trace conditions.
Extending the Tamari lattice to some compositions of species

An extension of the Tamari lattice to the multiplihedra is discussed, along with projections to the composihedra and the Boolean lattice. The multiplihedra and composihedra are sequences of polytopes that arose in algebraic topology and category theory. Here we describe them in terms of the composition of combinatorial species. We define lattice structures on their vertices, indexed by painted trees, which are extensions of the Tamari lattice and projections of the weak order on the permutations. The projections from the weak order to the Tamari lattice and the Boolean lattice are shown to be different from the classical ones. We generalize the Tamari lattice to graph tubings--as is also described by Ronco. We review how lattice structures often interact with the Hopf algebra structures, following Aguiar and Sottile who discovered the applications of Mobius inversion on the Tamari lattice to the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra.

In this paper, we consider properties of coefficients of a generating functions composition, where the outer function is a logarithmic generating function and the inner function is an ordinary generating function with integer coefficients. Using notions of composita and composition of generating functions, we get new properties for this composition. The properties can be used for distinguishing prime numbers from composite numbers. As an application, obtained results can be used to obtain new primality criteria. We obtain primality criteria for the Mersenne numbers, the Lucas numbers, the Pell-Lucas numbers, the Jacobsthal-Lucas numbers, and the Lucas sequences. Keywords: generating function, composition of generating function, composita, primality criterion.

The action of the Bernstein operators on Schur functions was given in terms of codes in [CG] and extended to the analog in Schur Q-functions in [HJS]. We define a new combinatorial model of extended codes and show that both of these results follow from a natural combinatorial relation induced on codes. The new algebraic structure provides a natural setting for Schur functions indexed by compositions.
